PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Neighbors,The New York City Department of Education has proposed to co-locate another school at Martin
Van Buren High School. The high school recently was assigned a new principal, who has been workingto restore the school's reputation and has been reaching out to the local community for their assistance.Elected officials and community leaders are against this plan. Under the proposed plan, the newschool, which will be under different management, will partner with Queens Borough CommunityCollege. A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, October 23 at 6p.m. at the Martin Van BurenHigh School. Please make sure you attend and share your opinion.
On October 1, NYS launched the state health care insurance exchange, which is required underthe new federal Affordable Care Act. According New York State Department of Health, the exchangewill offer plans in four tiers: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. They all differ in what is included, butevery level must offer coverage in 10 basic areas including doctor visits, ambulatory and emergencyvisits, preventative care and pediatric services. Queens Village residents hoping to purchase a plan canvisit the website, nystateofhealth.ny.Qov, where information about signing up by phone or receivingassistance in person is available.
Election Day is Tuesday November 5. Please make sure you exercise your right and go out tovote for your candidates of choice. This year we wi!! be electing a new Mayor, Comptroller, PublicAdvocate and a Borough President.
I would like to wish our Muslim neighbors a happy Eid Al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice that willbe celebrated on October 15. Also to our Hindu neighbors, a happy Diwall, the festival of lights,celebrated on November 3. To all of those celebrating Halloween, have fun and enjoy the goodies, butmake sure the kids do so safely.

If you receive a telephone call telling you thatNationalQrid needs to inspect your furnace , don'tbelieve if They will tell you that they have the rightto inspect your heating system. Nationalqrid has nosuch policy and has not authorized the call. Thesecrooks are trying to get into your home to rob you. Ifyou receive such a call, immediately call 911.
105TH PRECINCT COUNCIL, MEETING
The next meeting of the 1051h Precinct CommunityCouncil will be held on Wednesday, October 30, at8:00 P. M., in the precinct located at 92-08 222ndStreet, in Queens Village. Our local police will bethere to give reports and statistics on crime in ourcommunity. They will answer your questions andconcerns about safety, and you will be given theopportunity to make complaints. The Council meetson the last Wednesday of the month, except if itfalls on a holiday.

FUN FOR ALL AT FARMHOUSE fESTIVAL
The Queens County Farm Museum, located at 73-50 Little Neck Parkway, in Floral Park, will hold itsannual Children"s Fall Festival on Sunday, October27, from 11:00 A. M. to 4:00 P. M. Celebrateautumn with Halloween fun. Youngsters are invitedto wear their Halloween costumes and visit thehaunted house. Kids will love the bouncy housesand cartoon character look-a-likes and pie=eatingcontests. There will be live country music anddancing. Enjoy hay rides, petting zoo, pony rides.,and tours of the historic farmhouse. Admission tothe festival is $5.00 for all ages. Free parking isavailable. The Amazing Maize Maze, a three acreinteractive corn maze, will be open.
October is Pumpkin Month at the Farmhouse. Pickyour own pumpkin on Saturdays and Sundays onOctober 5 -27 from 11:00 A. M. to 4:00 P. M. Enjoysearching the pumpkin patch to find your favorite.
STOP-&-TEXT ZONES
In addition to highway rest stops, drivers in NewYork State will now have text stops. Ninety-one reststops and other parking areas on the highways arebeing dubbed "texting zones" in an effort to stopmotorists from texting while driving. Th state isposting nearly 300 signs directing motorists to thezones. The texting zones are part of a year-longcrackdown on distracted driving. State police thissummer wrote 21,580 distracted driving tickets, upfrom 5.208 last summer. Governor Cuomo hassigned a law boosting fines for texting while drivingto $150, plus five driving license points. Distracteddriving is a serious problem, causing one of everyfive accidents in New York.
