Beyond Excellence, Dare to Know and Know

Leisure Inbound passes the ISO Audit with Zero Non

Conformities

Always striving to achieve high quality standards and

adopt environmentally sustainable practices, Walkers

Tours and Whittalls Travels faced a successful ISO 9001

and 140001 audit. This successful completion of the

audit proves the high quality standard of service we

render our clients and the reliability as a Destination

Management Company.

Walkers Tours

Official Transport

Sponsor for Miss

France 2014

Walkers Tours the official

transport partner provided luxury

coaches and superior micro vans for

the entire contingent from the time

of arrival and throughout their

journey from Habarana, Sigiriya,

Polonnaruwa throughout to

Beruwala whilst experiencing Sri

Lankan hospitality.

Page 3: The Pulse - December 2013

The editorial team of the pulse

decided to bring to you the other side

of well known Ryan Gray. Most of us

know him as the head of the Transport

division who is most certainly a cat on

hot bricks as he is always on the move

between Colombo 2 and 15. With 15

minutes on the clock we managed to

take a look into this exciting

personality despite having his phone

ringing constantly throughout the

interview.

Hailing from St. Anthony’s College,

Kandy, Ryan was rather a silent

character back in his school days.

With his Father and Grandfather both

been Antonian’s the decision was

made about his school well before he

was born. Up until his ordinary level

examinations Ryan admits that he was

the target of all the bullies in school.

This silent character spent most of his

school life dedicating to sports of his

choice. Athletics, Swimming,

Badminton were among the favoruites.

Long jump, Triple jump and 200

meters were his main events during

the school sports meet. Post O/L

examinations Ryan became an active

member of the school interact club and

the Shakespeare Drama club which

brought him out of his silent shell and

went onto becoming the deputy head

prefect of his school. He then went

onto become the ladies man and well

known for his good looks in the whole

of Kandy. He was also the first in the

list to be called to compeer at any

school event..

Unlike most of his friends or even

most of the 16 year olds now a day,

Ryan knew exactly what career he

wanted. Whilst studying for his

Advance Level examinations he

started a part time course in

Mechanical Engineering at the

German Technical Training Institute

Having completed his Advance level

examinations in the Arts stream, Ryan

went onto complete his course in

Mechanical engineering. He

subsequently started a diploma in

Automobile Technology at City and

Guildes, Colombo. Six months after

leaving school he joined Swedish

Training Company as a mechanic

(Trainee) since he needed experience

to complete his higher studies and then

began his career in his chosen field as

a Mechanic

Looking back he says the “Best day of

his life, thus far” is the day he passed

out from the German Technical

training institute as a fully qualified

automobile engineer, only because he

managed his higher education whilst

studying for his Advance Level

examinations which gave him the

added advantage of passing out as a

automobile engineer at a very young

age. Having bagged the qualification

he needed, Ryan went onto climbing

the career ladder at Swedish Training.

After a stint of seven years Ryan

decided to switch jobs. He was the

After sales and Customer Service

Manager at the point of leaving

Swedish Training.

“The opportunity I got to join JKH

was unexpected but today I’m happy

that I made the move simply because

it’s more than just a work place”

His main career goal as he explains is

to be the best motor mechanic and to

have his own business and to be better

than his dad whom he considers his

role model, advisor and mentor.

Born to a family in Kandy Ryan is the

eldest of two. His younger sister,

Stephanie, whom he adores much,

runs her own salon in Australia. With

both children out of home his mother

has adopted two daughters to fill in the

shoes of her dear children. Her pride

and joy Fluffy and Sesame are two

lion Sheppards who get to travel the

country as they cannot be out of the

mother’s sight.

Since he was small there were two

main things he wanted to try out in

life. To join the Navy and to be a

motor racer. Having grown up around

uncles and his Father who were motor

racing fanatics Ryan was more

inclined towards walking the same

walk. Working his way up to achieve

his dreams he studied the specifics of

motor racing and today is a committee

member of the motor racing

association of Sri Lanka and the

Ceylon Motor sports Club. He is also

the Head of the technical committee

for Sri Lanka automobile sports which

directly reports to the sports minister.

Appointing of a chief scrutineer for all

prominent motor racing events that

run under the national sporting code of

Sri Lanka is his duty. There are many

instances that Ryan himself has been

the chief scrutineer for many events.

Three years ago two Sri Lankans were

selected to be FIA approved

scrutineers. One of them was Ryan,

who passed a three year training with

flying colours which gave him the

opportunity to represent Sri Lanka as a

scrutineer at the Singapore formula 01

motor races.

The Other Side

Page 4: The Pulse - December 2013

“This was a dream come true as I was

the only Sri Lankan who has

represented the country as a scrutineer

at the most prominent event in motor

racing in the world”

Ryan himself is a racing driver who

started with go carting. He is a fanatic of

speed rallying “I love the drama and the

action that takes place, that’s what

drives me to take part”

Ryan is also engaged in training junior

sruitineers as a part time programme

for Sri Lanka automobile sports.

Any message for the readers?

“Apart from sending your TRs on time

I believe all of you should face every

situation as it comes since life is

unpredictable. Balance out the good

and

the bad in life and I believe that the

bad experiences in life would drive

you to achieve something great in life

We ran for their lives A team of 10 from Walkers and Whittalls teamed up to run for the lives of cancer patients on the 08

th of December 2013.

The members managed to successfully complete the 5km distance which was meant to be a charity run with a bit of

jogging and plenty of walking. This was a project organized by the Rotaract Club of Colombo Uptown for the fourth

consecutive year.

Page 5: The Pulse - December 2013

They Say that “A child's smile is one

of life's greatest blessings”. Twenty

employees from Whittall’s

experienced this first hand on 30th of

November, when they visited a school

in Ratnapura.

The annual charity project done by

Whittall Boustead (Travel) Limited,

which is a project partly funded by

Kuoni UK, donated stationary for 220

children in a rural school in

Ratnapura.This project was launched

in the year 2000, when the idea

originated at the staff meeting.

This school was selected after it was

suggested by an employee’s father who

was living in Ratnapura. With the main

scarcity being stationary, we decided to

provide the school with stationary for

145 children. The donation was

followed by a fellowship with the kids

where the team performed an act which

entertained the children thoroughly.

This year upon request from the school,

we also took some cricket bats and

tennis balls so that the children could

play some cricket during their recess

time.

With there being a surplus of funds in

the year 2012, when we were

contacted by a school in Maharagama,

we decided to provide them with

vouchers for school shoes. This year

too we provided the 175 children of

the school with vouchers with the

hope that this too becomes an annual

project.
