Air is drawn from the atmosphere and is compressed by the COMPRESSOR (1). Moisture and carbon dioxide normally present in the air are removed in the PURIFICATION UNIT (2). This unit comprises two adsorption coloumns,one of which treats the air while the other is being regenerated. The compressed air,now dry and free from impurity,enters the HEAT EXCHANGER (3) and divides into two streams.stream A passes through the EXPANDER (4) where it loses energy and is cooled. It returns through the other pass of the heat exchanger to cool and liquefy air stream B. The liquid air,on leaving the heat exchenger,is expanded through a valve into the COLUMN (5) where it is fractionated.Nitrogen vapour is purified.This nitrogen is then liquefied in the CONDENSER (6),the refrigeration for this being provided by enriched liquid air taken from the column base.
