LINEAR FEATURES

Summary

A number of roughly parallel linear ditch-fe

atures were

observed during geophysical investigations and in aerial

photographs, to

the north

of th

e Perch Pond on th

e Plain in

Wanstead Park.

Descrip

tion

A number of broadly parallel features, aligned roughly

north

west – southeast, were observed during geophysical

investigations, on aerial photographs, and following the

LiDAR survey.

They were originally observed during the 2005 GSB

Prospection Ltd m

agnetic survey (fe

atures ‘F

’ and ‘G

’), and

in th

e 2005 G

SB Prospection Ltd re

sistivity survey (fe

atures

‘N’, ‘O’, and ‘P’),

(WPEv021) (2). The 2007 West Essex

Archaeological G

roup m

agnetic survey and re

sistivity survey

also picked up these fe

atures (W

PEv023) (3

).

These lin

ear fe

atures are also visible on aerial p

hotographs

(4), a

s well a

s on the LiDAR survey (5

).

These fe

atures have not b

een in

vestigated archaeologically,

such th

at it is

diffic

ult to

accurately determ

ine th

eir a

ge or

character.

Their possible association with two ring ditches

(WPM009, WPM010),

in that they are tangential to them,

suggests that they may be prehistoric in date. They do,

however,

appear characteristic of earlie

r field systems,

probably pre-dating the 18th century landscaped park, and

so could equally be Roman or m

edieval.
