A week of successful arrestsLast week was a particularly successful one for our Precinct patrolmen and members of the SAPS throughout the Precinct areas, with numerous

suspects being apprehended. Several suspects in various areas were also arrested for trespassing.Well done and a very big THANK YOU to everyone involved in getting these criminals off our streets.

The following are just a few of these incidents:

On 24 January, a suspect was arrested for dealing and being in possession of drugs at Northmead Square.

On 25 January, 3 suspects were caught and arrested for stealing at a company in Jet Park.

On 24 January a suspect was arrested for breaking into a home in Wooton Avenue, Western Extension, thanks to the alertness of a

On 27 January, a man suspected of robbing schoolchildren was spotted outside Hans Moore School in Northmead. With members of the SAPS and our patrolmen giving chase, the suspect was apprehended in Warwick Street.

BCP“ C u r r e n t l y w e are experiencing problems every

time it rains. The sewage system, which currently deals with rain water and sewage) is flooded beyond capacity and we cannot flush our toilets. Raw sewerage flows out of service holes into our gardens and on occasion down the street. The contaminated water also flows into the river which is situated across the road. This is a health hazard, not only to the residents of our area, but also to all the communities who rely on the river downstream. Please find attached the GIS Imagery from Ekurhuleni which shows that there are no storm water drains located in the suburb of Pomona and surrounds. Not only is the sewage a problem, every time it rains the water floods the neighbour’s house as there are no storm water drains to carry it away. Each time this occurs the\municipality is called to come out and pump water out of the neighbour’s garden, our garden becomes flooded as there is nowhere for the water to go, other than our garden (funneled in by a ‘fake’ storm water drain).#It has been suggested, and I strongly agree, that a concrete canal built on the east boundary wall of Erf 14 would greatly increase the flow of water into the pipe which crosses under Outeniqua Avenue, as the grass currently inhibits the flow and prevents solid waste from flowing away. Also if the canal is extended along the north-facing wall, it will be able to cope with water as it comes in fromsurrounding properties. We have taken

this matter up with the relevant parties at Ekurhjuleni, but to date nothing has been done to help solve our problem. We pay our rates, taxes, sewerage including water and lights every month,

and still nothing gets done. We log service calls and get told nothing can be done.As a group, the

residents of Pomona Ext. 2 have reached a point where we cannot continue living in raw sewage on a daily basis any more, and insist that the municipality place

proper draining in our area, or at least work with us to find a solution to this ongoing issue. We would appreciate an urgent meeting between all roleplayers to discuss the way forward.

Yours faithfullyJulian Pienaar”

Pomona Flooding

Pipe flooded and overcapacity. Water does not flow if heavy rains fall.

Our Ward Councillor, Pieter Henning has received several emails regarding the recent flooding which has taken place, and which has had a detrimental effect on

residents as a result of no storm water drainage system in the area.According to Councillor Henning, he met with senior officials on Monday 30 January 2012 and took them on a site visit. It was agreed that we identify 5 residents from the area. We will be meeting again with officials on Monday 6 February 2012 in an effort to find a solution to the immediate problems.“Hi Pieter,Firstly I'd like to thank you for the personal time and devotion which you have given to

this subject - we do appreciate it.My dogs have in the past 2 years had to be treated by the VET (at some great expense) for some or other worm infestation picked up after previous and continuous flooding dueto the sewerage having been overflowing at various times during storms - I shudder to think how this is affecting us humans as well and I believe that this is a SERIOUS health issue. I would really appreciate feedback on how Ekhuruleni is going to handle this problem as there is a non working (and non-existent in some areas) storm water drainage system in the area and this is being exacerbated by Stands higher

up being utilised by Industrial Mega Parks which is now compounding the problem.Kind RegardsDianna SheehanBCP

Set in the high-stakes world of the financial industry, Margin Call is an entangling thriller involving the key players at an investment firm during one perilous 24-hour period in the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis. Despite e-tolling on Gauteng’s freeways having been delayed last week, Sanral has continued encouraging motorists to register for e-tags, which could be illegal. The SA National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral) not only wants your money – it also wants access to all your bank details and financial accounts. The Department of Transport postponed e-tolling on Gauteng’s freeways on Friday, weeks before the system was due to go live next month. This is the second time the department has suspended the multibillion-rand project. Despite this, Sanral has continued its advertising campaign, encouraging motorists to register for e-tags. But the registration of the e-tags may be illegal in terms of the Consumer Protection Act.This is according to various organisations who have analysed the terms and conditions of e-tag accounts. At the centre of their concerns is clause 33 of Sanral’s terms and conditions, which states that: “The user hereby irrevocably authorises the Agency or its duly authorised agent to obtain from any institution where the user may have an account, or from any credit bureau, any information concerning the user. This clause constitutes consent and an instruction to each such institution to disclose such information to the Agency or its agent.” Dr Cliff Johnston, from the SA National Consumer Union (Sancu), said this goes

against the Financial Services Act, which states that an institution may not request more information than is needed. “So they may see if you have been blacklisted. But what if you have? Will that mean you won’t be able to register? Will you not be able to use the road then? How will Sanral deal with those cases?” Johnston asked. Sancu intended to complain about the terms and conditions to the National Consumer Tribunal before the suspension. It is now planning to approach Sanral’s new board to point out the illegalities in the conditions. Another contentious term, said Johnston, was that “Sanral’s information is correct unless you can prove otherwise. So if someone fraudulently copies your licence plate, Sanral will remove money from your account. How are you going to prove it wasn’t your car? This is illegal in terms of the Consumer Protection Act.” Another controversial term was that you must supply Sanral with your bank account details, giving it access to debit money from the account “once the user’s e-toll account balance goes below the user’s predefined top-up threshold level”. Johnston said Sancu was initially encouraging people to register for an e-toll account, but only on the prepaid option, without giving banking details. “But we soon realised Sanral would not register you without your bank details. “What if you are poor and don’t have a bank

account? Does that mean you won’t be allowed to drive on the roads?” For road users who do not register for an e-tag, Sanral’s terms are that motorists must pay for the toll within seven days or they will be punished. But Johnston said this was impossible as it would take far longer for the notice to be posted to you and payment made. The DA has taken its concerns one step further by sending a complaint of infringements by Sanral to the National Consumer Tribunal in terms of the Consumer Protection Act : that users have to give access to their bank accounts for unknown amounts; there is a high possibility of fraud as 10 percent of all licence plates are cloned or fraudulent; there is no clarity on how disputed amounts will be refunded; there are undisclosed administration fees (R5 for posted statements and 20c for each sms); identification by e-tag as opposed

to number plate is unclear; and certain road users (minibus taxis and buses) are exempted, leading to unfair discrimination. Sanral had not responded to queries at the time of going to print. What they don’t tell you * Users have to give access to their bank accounts for unknown amounts; * There is a high possibility of fraud as 10 percent of all licence plates are cloned or fraudulent; * There is no clarity on how disputed amounts will be refunded; * There are undisclosed administration fees (R5 for post statements and 20c for each sms); * Identification by e-tag as opposed to number plate is unclear; and * Certain road users (minibus taxis and buses) are exempted, leading to unfair discrimination. - The Star

On an ongoing basis, the ladies from Benoni Aurora Rotary Anns collect donations of food at shopping centres

to distribute to various organisations. The food collected is then packed into boxes and distributed to places such as Farrarmere Village Crèche, St Vincent de Paul, Home Start, John Wesley School, Norah’s Crèche, Thembela Crèche, families at Muriel Brand School to name but a few.On average, 28 boxes of food are distributed per month, thanks to the generosity of members of the community. In addition to the above, Gwyn Westcott and her team also collect food which is utilised in soup kitchens. Cecilia Matthews

was instrumental in starting a soup kitchen 12 years ago, which has now expanded to three soup kitchens. Approx 650 people are fed twice a week. These soup kitchens, located at St Albans in Daveyton, Etwatwa Church and Mary Magdalene in Wattville, are possible thanks to the Mothers Union at St Dunstans Cathedral and Benoni Aurora Rotary Anns. These dedicated ladies can be seen collecting food outside Pick ‘n Pay, Farrarmere Shopping Centre in Sheridan Road on the first Saturday after the 25th of the month. Next time you see these ladies there, please try and donate an item of food, no matter how small, it really will go to good use.
