Welcome to the Summer Holiday Edition issue of the Post Newspaper

By the time you are reading this, we all hope to be in a food coma from a massive Christmas feast and wistfully lounging by a pool or at the beach, celebrating summer and Christmas the traditional kiwi way.

What an incredibly year 2015 was. Even though I joined over half way through the year, I can see just how busy the team has been by reviewing our past papers – it is safe to say that they all have earned a well deserved break.

A massive thank you is needed to our Franklin Com-munity and our amazing local contributors. Without you all, we wouldn’t be able to cover events and human inter-est stories, so thank you for allowing us to your first point of call for submitting your stories. Another thank you is needed for our loyal advertisers, again, without you, printing this newspaper just wouldn’t be possible.

Every single one of you has a huge part to play in mak-ing our newspaper what it is today, and we are proud to

bring you the best community newspaper that we can be.

Here at the Post, we are incredibly excited for 2016. While we will continue to create and maintain relation-ships within our community, we still want to hear from you, so please drop us a line. I cannot reiterate enough that, to you it may not be news, but for us it could be our lead story.

We hope you enjoy our Summer Holiday Edition, which is chock full of stories and news bites of destinations and activities to do in our community and wider districts.

We hope you all have had a lovely and well deserved Christmas break, and are looking forward to seeing all our readers in the New Year.

Be safe, and remember, the team will be back on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, refreshed and ready to serve our community with another year of fabulous newspapers, full with local content.

Tim Gregory is a local icon within the Franklin community. Marketing and Events Coordinator for Smart Bar, Tim’s passions include sport and not just the actual event. He enjoys finding out the back stories, the politics involved and the real life theatre it brings. Tim likes writing, and says that he is naturally very fidgety, and writing helps him slow down and focus. He was told recently that the perfect brain should be a tidy library of information, but his is more like a book shop after an earthquake! Tim is a regular contributor to the Post with coverage of local events and topical, as well as controversial, columns.

Intern Billie Douglas is 16 years old and has just completed her second to last year of high school. She has thoroughly enjoyed her experience here at the Post, writing and proof reading articles, as well as attending interviews and taking photos. Her interests include writing, anything involving an adrenaline rush, skiing and music. She plays the piano and is part of a school barbershop chorus and quartet. She hopes to possibly pursue a career in journalism or communications.

Kennedy Anderson is a vibrant and bubbly Waiuku resident who has a passion for photography. He took our stunning front cover for the Holiday edition. The 18 year old has his own photography business, www.kjaphotgraphy.com, and says that he much prefers being behind the lense than in front of it. Kennedy is looking forward to studying Design at Auckland University next year, and can be found ready to help at Gary Pyes 100%.

REVIEWSThis year we have had many

opportunities to delight our senses with delicious foods. Here are

some of the highlights

MC D’s

TEMPT YOUR TASTEBUDS AT AGAVE

It isn’t often that we steal ourselves away from our computer screens, but when Kylie Hall from Castaways Resort of-fered Lynn and Emma from the Post, the opportunity to sample their delectable new menu, they just couldn’t resist. Those who haven’t travelled to this amazing set-ting above Karioitahi Beach do not realise what they are missing out on. Agave Res-taurant is nestled on the cliff tops, over-looking the picturesque Karioitahi Beach. Any seat in the restaurant allows you to soak in the panoramic views of the stun-ning seascape. We settled on the Sticky Venison Ribs and the Crispy Skin Ora King Salmon. Both meals were flavoursome and the ribs deliciously tender. For des-sert we selected the Tiramisu Gateaux and Honey and Crème Brulee. The flavours were heavenly – so irresistibly smooth that you had to savour every bite.

New café in iconic site

Franklin local and former Head chef of Bracu and pop up restaurant Egg & Spoon, Dan Pearson, has invigorated Buckland with his fresh and exciting new coffee stop, Buckland Store Café.

Situated in the iconic and historic Buckland Store building on Buckland Road, the café shares its space with homewares store Maisy & Grace, who opened their doors recently.

“Our little space at the back seats just eight, but we will be offering a large selection of breakfast and lunch options, great coffee, sweet treats and more. We’ll be launching a gour-met takeaway night once a week, too,” says Pearson.

While Pearson has a fine dining background, his approach to food is relaxed and informal, with a focus on locally sourced produce, including Po-keno Bacon and Mercer Cheese toast-ies, Glenbrook Cheese tossed through salads and locally produced fruit juic-es, as well as coffee from Drury-based roaster, Roma.

NICK’S CAFE

Nick’s cafe the Peoples Choice. It has been described as a roller-

coaster ride for Waiuku’s Nick King, as his cafe has just won the overall People’s Choice Award at the Cafe of the Year competition.

Nick’s Cafe was selected from over 800 cafes, a result that has

Nick astounded. He said fresh, high quali-

ty ingredients, premium cof-fee and excellent customer service was why his cafe col-

lected so many votes, with the award being a validation that his

mantra is working.Nick purchased the cafe in 2011,

which is located at 26/38 Constable Road, Waiuku, and he currently has nine staff.

Nick hoped the accolade would encourage more customers to trav-el to Waiuku and enjoy what his ca-fe has to offer.

Because of your votes,

you chose Nick’s Cafe

Available between 10.30am and 10pm at participating restaurants. Dine-in or take-away (excl Drive-Thru). Drink not served as shown.

The Bossman, Steve, and our Calen-dar Girl, Lynn, were given the opportu-nity to take time out of their busy sched-ules to sample the new gourmet offer-ings at the deliciousness that we like to call McDonalds.

Being technology impaired, both found the new kiosks at Pukekohe Mc-Donalds very user friendly. The wait for their burgers wasn’t very long, and both were pleasantly surprised at the presen-tation, which gave a rustic feel with the wooden board and a cute wire basket for the chips – but did the taste exceed their expectations?

It sure did. Steve ordered a beastly burg-er that contained the extra

options of grilled onion, cheddar cheese, guaca-

mole, aioli, crispy bacon and mushrooms, while Lynn went for a light-er option, which in-cluded red onion, to-mato, beetroot and Swiss cheese. Steve described the experi-ence as a game chang-

er for McDonalds and that the stereotyped per-

ception has been removed – you don’t have to go just

for fast food. Instead, it could be described as a fine dining ex-

perience.

Anchor on the hunt for NZ’s Best MilkshakeA summer’s day at the beach is only complete

with an ice-cold slurp of a classic milkshake, and An-chor is now on the hunt to find the best in the land with NZ’s Best Milkshake Competition!

Now in its second year, the competition encour-ages all Anchor customers to enter their most cre-ative blend.

With official consumer voting having been kicked off on Tuesday, December 1, and running until Monday, February 29 2016, Kiwis are now encour-aged to go out and try these creations, vote for their favourite online and be in to win great consumer prizes. Each of the four finalists will receive $1000 worth of Anchor Milk, with an additional $1000 worth of Anchor Milk awarded to the national win-ner, who will also claim the title of NZ’s Best Milk-shake. New Year

We find strength and truth in His Word, His Word Alone...

Here we are now, just a very few days out from the end of 2015 and the dawning of 2016 and a Brand New Year, one almost like none other ever in the history past. How we got this far through 2015 from January just past so quickly is just a mystery and a blur, but here we are now, all of us standing at the very door as it were, doorstep in front of us ready to step over the threshold into 2016. There are some very big plans afoot for this next year by those in power, and the new technology that is about to be launched is going to totally change the way we live and the way we do things. There is a grand new day dawning in front of us jam packed with wonders and new experiences, some great, and some; well not so great.

There are some grand ole New Year’s Poems that get dusted off and re-posted, so your Facebook, Twitter and social media account will most likely show some of them, but your best and safest way into 2016 is to glue yourself to Jesus Christ, weld yourself to God and to hang on, strap yourself in as we rollercoaster off into and through this New Year; as God is the only guarantee and surety that ever has been in the past, in the present, or ever will be in the future.

How is your relationship with him? Is it strong and vibrant, or does it need a whole lot more time, effort and commitment? Time is flying by and things are pressing in on all fronts, maybe we need a major shift in our priorities, and that which we claim to be most important, somehow actually gets to be dragged up from the bottom of the heap and dusted off and then put back where it actually belongs, at the very top.

Now that you have put God back at the top of your list, (where he should always ever be) why not now link family up there next, then put your active support group next, and then how about you put there those who support you next and then return the favour and actively support those who are reaching out to support you. Give a little back for the grateful efforts that they pour into you. Make sure that each person knows that they are special in your life, and that you treasure their input and involvement, and that you want it to continue.

Are there some things that really need to be removed from your list as “I do not do that anymore” and a few things added as “This is the new Me, I now do these sorts of things.” The old “Written Lists” are very helpful method in focussing the mind, so that one can evaluate where one is heading and where one is not going back to; a that was “once upon a time in a land far far away” and is no longer a current behaviour or activity, ever.

There may be a “cap in hand” and apologies to be sought, to have to go and to hold out “The Olive Branch,” time to build some new, or to repair some old bridges, and there will also most definitely be some bad bridges to a nasty place that really need a “Demolition Crew” or a “Burn that old Bridge Down.” You are certainly done and through with that; be it a bad and destructive relationships, bad diet and eating, bad living, or whatever may be on your list, now is the time to change course, to go on a different path, to forge a new pathway or to trail blaze.

You just might be pleasantly surprised at those who join you in your “New Quest” as they also have come to the same conclusion and you now have some likeminded “Travelling Companions” who just need your vision and desire as “I just want to be part of that.” Sometimes all people need is a “Leader” or a “Concept” to have them to commit to a new path, and to then say, I wish I had thought of that ages ago as that is just what I want, so step out with your hand firmly in God’s hand, and advance into a new tomorrow.

We have this pertinent verse in 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” We have a “New You” and a “New Year” with a load of fresh new plans and aspirations. As Paul put it, “Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature,” we can have a new life, a new slate, and the old things are no more, so the Jesus Christ portion is the most critical. If we get that one right, then everything else will smoothly fall into its right place behind that one, it is called right priorities.

Jesus Christ, First, Last and Best in everything. Quote; “Jesus Christ is everything to us--the first, the last, the best in everything. Jesus Christ, His Spirit, His character, colours everything; it is the warp and the woof, the very texture of our entire being. The words of Christ are spirit and life. We cannot, then, centre our thoughts upon self; it is no more we that live, but Christ that liveth in us, and He is the hope of glory. Self is dead, but Christ is a living Saviour.” {FLB 150} How can we ever fail if we adopt this principle for 2016?

Dear Reader; I resolve to make “Jesus Christ, First, Last and Best in everything,” to walk in his ways and to be led by his word, the Bible; so will you also commit to this stand and make 2016 the Year of Jesus Christ, King of our lives and ruler and director of our every step and pathway? God will bless you abundantly in this New Year, please just let him.

The Gem of Waikaretu

Sculptures at the lighthouse

St Bride’s and the Awhitu Peninsula

see & do

St Bride’s Church in Mauku was built at the time of the Waikato War in the 1860s. It is a fortified church and was the last hope of safety for settlers caught up in the conflict - there is also a pioneer cemetery at the church. The Manukau Heads Lighthouse on the Awhitu Peninsula is one of few visitor-accessible lighthouses in New Zealand. Inside are displays telling the story of the HMS Orpheus, which ran aground in 1863 as it approached Manukau Harbour, tragically killing 189 people. From the balcony at the top, there are beautiful views of the harbour.

ExperienceNature’s own Christmas Lights

Leave behind the frustration of untangling the Christmas lights this year and head to New Zealand’s

natural fairy light display – the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.

Glide silently through the starry wonderland of this very special glowworm grotto and enjoy a magical galaxy of tiny living lights. Found exclusively in New Zealand, these glowworms (Arachnocampa luminosa) are thousands of tiny creatures radiating beautiful, twinkling luminescent light.

From December 26 to January 31 there are additional Twilight tours at 6pm and 7pm and you can even visit the Caves on Christmas Day (last tour at 4pm). Adults from $49, children from $22 and $121 for a family pass, tours depart every half hour from 9am-5pm daily (allow 45 minutes).

Who needs to plug in fairy lights when you have Mother Nature’s very own light display to enjoy the true magic of Christmas! For more information, visit www.waitomo.com

Nikau Cave is one of the most beautiful glowworm caves in New Zealand, with thousands of glow-worms and amazing formations. The one and a half hour tour through Nikau Cave is personal and unhur-ried. It is great for family and the beauti-ful café is the perfect place for a relaxing day trip or refreshing getaway. They will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday. Visit www.nikaucave.co.nz for more information.

Delight the senses

The Franklin Fuchsia group would like to encourage the public to attend the show, which is sure to be a wonderful celebration of such a beautiful flower.

“It’s well worth going to. It’s colourful, the perfume is not too overwhelming, and it is sure to brighten up your day!”

For more information, contact Mary Hull, president of the Franklin Fuchsia Group.

Show & Display

The Franklin Fuchsia Group’s annual show, to be held on Thursday, January 15 and Friday, January 16 will be a delightful social event embodying a colourful display of flowers that “couldn’t be found anywhere else.”Judged by Burt and Jill Kennerley, with Burt as the chief Judge, this will be the group’s 17th show. Group contact Elaine Baldwin believes that it is sure to be a success. “We sell hun-dreds of plants; in the past we have sold 500 over the two days.”Attributing to the appeal of the show is the unique and rare nature of the flowers that will be showcased. “We have a huge variety of flow-ers that cannot be found through commercially viable businesses. You wouldn’t find them any-where else.” The event is likely to include, as well as competitions and displays, several raffles with a variety of fuchsias and gardening equipment up for grabs.

If you need a break, Onefield Farm is an older homestead on the outskirts of Waiuku overlooking the Pokurua Lake. The unit has its own private garden and sun drenched patio.Great for a quick escape.

The Manukau Heads Lighthouse is re-nowned for its breath-taking views, but now there is another reason to visit it out in Awhitu. This sum-mer local artists have provided sculptures and other items for you to see, and buy if you wish.Three local artists are displaying five large sculptures which are for sale. With these new artistic editions, the Manukau Heads Lighthouse is definitely a destination to visit over the sum-mer. The lighthouse is run entirely on a volunteer basis, and donations are very gratefully accepted. Visit: www.manukau-headslighthouse.co.nz

Splash around safely this summer

Summer is a great time for splashing around and cooling off in the pool, but the Auckland Council urges families to remember that owning a pool does come with responsibilities. Unsupervised access via faulty gates and fences is a leading cause of children drowning and accidents in domestic pools. To keep your pool safe, maintain your pool fence, ensure your gate self closes and latches shut behind you, and register your pool with the council.

HOLIDAY SAFETYwaikato police

holiday tipSafe check your homeBefore you head off on holi-

day the Police ask you take a few simple steps to keep your

home safe. Have someone check your home, clear the

mail and consider getting time regulated lights. Don’t leave

boxes or expensive items out on the street and avoid social media posts that you’re going

away.

NZ VeteRiNaRy aSSociatioN tipS

think again before gifting a petIf considering giving an animal as a gift, think

twice and make sure the recipient has the time and commitment to give the pet the love and affection it deserves. And adopt your pet from a rescue organisation to discourage un-

necessary breeding and save a life.

caNceR Society SuNbuRN tipS be sun smart this summer

Slip on some protective clothing, such as long sleeves, trousers or skirts, slop

on sunscreen, SPF30 or higher and apply to all areas that haven’t been

covered up, slap on a wide brim hat, wrap on a pair of sunglasses to protect

your eyes and stay in the shade and out of the sun, especially when the sun

is strongest.

While Christmas is meant to be one of the most joyous times of the year, it can also lead to being under pressure. The Police advise that Christmas is also a time where budgets are under a lot of strain with kids on holiday wanting to do things. More money is spent on entertainment and the dreaded credit card bills come rolling in. If it all gets too much Police urge people to take time out from one another and to ask someone for help. Also, any person being subject to or living in fear of domestic violence should contact Police. Alternatively they can also call Women’s Refuge: (07) 855 1569 or 0800 REFUGE (733 843) or the Are You OK Information Line: 0800 456 450.

iving back to the community is something that Osborne’s Realty pride themselves on. They are incredibly proud to be able to give back to the community in the form of sponsorship and donations. Over the past couple of years, Osborne Realty has supported many Waiuku clubs and nonprofit organisations, including the bowling club, Rotary and the football club. They have also been involved in many fundraising initiatives. Brian Barrett, the owner of Osborne’s,

says that it is important to look after and support the smaller clubs, charities and non-profit organisations because of the fundamental roles they play in our communities. “These groups go on to help so many others, and if we don’t support them, they won’t survive. We have such a fantastic community and we need to nurture it.”

Osborne Realty gives back a percentage of its profits every year in sponsorship and donations, with this year sitting at just over $15,500 invested back into the community. The Franklin Parents Centre were fortunate to be one of the recipients of the Osborne Realty Community Funding scheme. The money was put to very good use through their annual clothing drive. Osborne Realty’s support did not stop at monetary sponsorship. They acted as a local drop off point for the donated items, which made it easier for local people to donate and gave the Parents Centre a huge boost in the number of items donated. Another group that benefited from their generosity was The Hamilton Estate community garden, which has been a staple part of the Waiuku area for the last seven years, providing food for the neighbourhood. The Garden is currently bursting at the seams with fresh produce after being given a helping hand by Osborne Realty.

THE CHARITY SAVING LIVES AT SEA

WEAR A LIFEJACKET

IT NEVER RUINED A DAY ON THE WATER

The signature red and yellow patrol flags are iconic to the Kiwi

summer and Surf Lifeguards are calling on the public to help

keep them there.

Karioitahi and Sunset

Beach Patrol dates

Karioitahi and Sunset Beach both started their patrols over Labour Weekend and lifeguards will be patrolling weekends through to March 28.

Karioitahi’s Regional Life-guard patrols are from December 14, through to February 5, while Sunset’s patrols are December 14, through to January 29.

Drowning factors preventable

With a number of kiwis planning to spend their summer holidays on the beach, Surf Life Saving New Zealand fears a repeat of last year’s high drowning record.According to Allan Mundy, Surf Life Saving New Zealand National Life Saving and Education Manager, it has been estimated that most drownings are in fact pre-ventable. “A large number of beachgoers put themselves into unnecessary danger last summer, and a large number of rescues took place outside of the traditional flagged patrol area and outside of standard patrol hours.” Mr Mundy says that there are a number of overarching factors that can lead to swimmers getting into trouble. They include ignorance or underestimation of their

own ability, misunderstanding or disregard of hazards such as rips, the inability to cope when exposed to these hazards and lack of surveillance or failure to keep an eye on one another. “Each beach is dangerous in its own right due to envi-ronmental factors. Even waist deep water can be life threatening if you step in a hole or get hit by a large wave.”Those choosing a beach destination for their Christmas holidays should take water safety into consideration and visit www.findabeach.co.nz to find the nearest pa-trolled beach to their home or holiday location. Surf Life Saving New Zealand encourages beach goers to adhere to a few simple rules. Be prepared, watch out for yourself and others, be aware of the dangers and know your limits. Visit www.surflifesaving.org.nz to find out more.

Before you go

KNOW THE BOATING SAFETY

Before you go boating on our seas, lakes and rivers, get familiar with New Zealand’s Boating Safety Code.

CODE5 simple rules

to help you stay safe:

Life JacketsTake them – Wear them. Boats, especially ones under 6m in length, can sink very quickly. Wearing a life jacket increases your survival time in the water.

Skipper ResponsibilityThe skipper is responsible for the safety of everyone on board and for the safe operation of the boat. Stay within the limits of your vessel and your experience.

CommunicationsTake two separate waterproof ways of communicating so we can help you if you get into difficulties.

Marine Weather New Zealand’s weather can be highly unpredictable. Check the local marine weather forecast before you go and expect both weather and sea state changes.

Avoid Alcohol Safe boating and alcohol do not mix. Things can change quickly on the water. You need to stay alert and aware.

Before you go boating on our seas, lakes and rivers, get familiar with New Zealand’s Boating Safety Code. Five simple rules will help you to stay safe, no matter what kind of boat you use.

Make sure your boat is properly and regularly maintained, has the right safety gear on board and if it has a motor, that it has sufficient fuel.

You should not expect good mobile phone coverage in remote areas. For emergency communications a marine VHF radio is recommended. Use channel 16 for emergencies.

406MHz distress beacons can be hired or bought. Visit www.beacons.org.nz

For more information about safe boating education

and how to prepare for your boating experience,

visit: www.adventuresmart.org.nz

Keep Safe on the waterWhether you’re into fishing, sailing, diving, cruising or just having fun, boating safety awareness is essential. Many boating tragedies are caused by an error in judgement relating to equipment, the weather or behaviour. Make sure you keep out of trouble by knowing the environment, having the right equipment on board and acting responsible at all times. All boats should carry a minimum amount of appropriate safety equipment, whether THE BOAT IS A SIT ON KAYAK OR A 20M LAUNCH.

In an emergency, dial 111 and ask for Police. If you’re on the water and have a VHF radio, call Channel 16, the international channel for maritime distress, and issue a Mayday call: Say ‘mayday, mayday, mayday’ and state your vessel name and location, then repeat three times. Keep calling until you get a response and follow any instructions given.

The Water Safety Code consists of four simple rules to remember each time you venture

near the water. It serves as a great starting point for planning a safe aquatic adventure.

The minimum safety equipment required for a small trailer powerboat includes: PFDs (life

jackets) for everyone on board, anchor and chain/warp, signalling/communication devices

(at least two), secondary propulsion (spare motor, oars, or paddles), bailer and fire extin-

guisher. There are many other items that may be useful such as a torch, first aid kit, spare

food and clothing, tools etc. What you carry will depend on the type of boat and where

you plan to go.

1. Be prepared - Learn to swim and survive • Set rules for safe play in the water • Always use safe and correct equipment and know the weather and water conditions before you get in.

2. Watch out for yourself & others - Always pay close attention to children you are supervising when in or near water • Swim with others and in areas where lifeguards are present.

3. Be aware of the dangers - Enter shallow and unknown water feet first and obey all safety signs and warning flags • DO NOT enter the water after drinking alcohol.

4. Know your limits - Challenge yourself within your physical limits and experience • Learn safe ways of rescu-ing others without putting yourself in danger.

The Water Safety Code

Join the team at the Post in supporting Coastguard Waiuku this summer. River and harbour bars can be extremely dangerous, with unpredictable, steep waves that can catch you unawares and swamp a small boat. You should learn how to handle the boat correctly and safely. A practical Boat-ing Education course will accelerate this process and help you learn practi-cal skills quickly. Go to www.coastguard.org.nz for more information on their Bar Crossing Education Day’s, Raising the Bar.

Fish n Chicks TournamentThat’s right ladies, a fishing tournament especially dedicated to you! Organised by the Counties Sport Fishing Club, it is described as a highlight of the fishing calendar, with many teams decorating themselves to themes or fancy dress, and having a good time out on the water. The annual event will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016 for more information and registration forms go to: www.csfc.co.nz

Children and boats are a great combination, out in the fresh air, learning about the world around them and having fun.As the Skipper, you are re-sponsible for all those on your boat, but children need extra care when aboard the boat and around water. Remember that children look to adults for examples of appropriate be-haviour. Wear your life jacket and they will wear theirs.
