    Fancy FootworkFitness (or “power”) walking burns calories and delivers many of the same benefits of jogging, with less impact on your joints. Here are the dos and don’ts for walking the walk.Do think tall. Keep your eyes forward, shoulders relaxed and back straight. Avoid slouching – imagine there’s an invisible cord at the top of your head pulling you up.

    • Don’t over-stride. Instead, opt for short quick steps. An increased stride will actually slow you down and cause you to tire faster.

    • Do bend your arms at a 90- degree angle and swing them in sync with your legs. If you want to increase your speed, pump your arms and your legs will keep up.

    • Don’t walk flat-footed. Walk heel to toe, making contact with the ground, and push off with your toes to amp up your speed.• Do rotate your hips. It may look funny, but it’s important

    to keep your hips loose and twist your waist forward and backward while you walk to keep a steady pace.

    How we did it: Sliced pears sneak in a partial serving of fruit. Baking instead of frying keeps things lighter by avoiding the need for butter or oil. Toasted almonds are a source of iron. Multigrain bread provides fiber.

    Madeover French Toast with Spiced Pears

    Baking this better-for-you French toast – instead of frying it in butter – keeps it low in saturated fat. Pair it with yogurt and fresh fruit for a complete breakfast. PREP TIME: 10 min. Total time: 30 min. Serves: 4

    1/4 cup (60 mL) Compliments Liquid Honey, divided

    1 tbsp. (15 mL) lemon juice

    1/2 tsp. (2 mL) each ground cinnamon and ginger, divided

    1 large ripe pear, cored and thinly sliced

    2 large eggs

    1/4 cup (60 mL) milk

    4 slices Compliments Balance Multi Whole Grain Bread

    1/4 cup (60 mL) toasted Compliments Sliced Natural Almonds

    1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Stir 3 tbsp. (45 mL) of the honey with lemon juice and 1/4 tsp. (1 mL) each of cinnamon and ginger. Spread evenly in a greased 8-inch (2 L) square-baking dish. Arrange the pears in two rows.

    2. Beat the eggs in a shallow dish with milk, remaining honey, cinnamon and ginger. Soak each piece of bread in egg mixture and arrange over the pears. Pour any remaining egg mixture evenly over the bread.

    3. Bake for 20 min. or until set and golden. To serve, cut into squares and use a thin flat spatula to lift each portion out of the pan and turn pear-side up. Sprinkle with almonds and drizzle with any syrup left in the baking dish.

    Nutrition tips from Sobeys Registered Dietitian Jennifer FergusonQ: I tend to lose energy during my workout. Are there any energy boosting snacks I should eat beforehand?

    A: Your body uses mostly carbohydrates for fuel when you exercise. Having a small snack before you work out, like half a peanut butter sandwich, yogurt, a granola bar, a small piece of fruit or 1/4 cup (60 mL) of nuts, will give your body carbohydrates and small amounts of protein that should keep energy levels up. But keep in mind that good nutrition all day, every day, is what really gives you energy for activity; healthy snacks before exercise will not make up for poor choices made during the rest of your day.

    Q: There’s lots of talk about reducing sodium. How much is too much, and how do I cut back?

    A: Too much sodium is linked to high blood pressure, so it’s good to decrease your intake. Aim to have 1,500 mg per day and no more than 2,300 mg. At home, most of our sodium intake – besides what we have add ourselves comes from processed and packaged foods and condiments. The best way to reduce your intake is to read nutrition labels and look for products with a

    lower sodium value (140 mg or less per serving), and ones that indicate lower or reduced sodium than their original versions. For cooking, cut back slowly so you develop a taste for less, and try herbs, spices or lemon juice for added flavours. Look for canned vegetables and fish with no salt added. Buy lower-sodium cheese such as Swiss or bocconcini. Limit packaged noodle or rice mixes. Lastly, eat restaurant food less often; it’s easier to control salt in food you prepare.
