MONTOUR GOES UNDEFEATEDIn a repeat of the Northwest Women's Pool Association (NWPA) season finale last November, Jana Montour and Liz Cole locked up in a finals battle in the opening event of the 2012 season on the weekend of March 3-4. Same opponents, different result. This time, Montour took a more direct route to the finals than the one she'd taken last November, when she had to win eight on the loss side to meet Cole, and this time, she defeated Cole twice to win it. The $1,000-added event drew 34 entrants to The Golden Fleece, in Kenmore, WA.

It was a four-match trip to the winners' side final four for Montour and a three-match journey for Cole, who drew a bye in the opening round. Montour got by Stephanie Goens, Shelby Locati, Eve Stockstill, and Kim Jones to meet up with Shari Ross. Cole defeated Suwanna Kroll, Talya Makus, and Mary Hopkin to meet up with Cindy Sliva. Montour sent Ross west 7-1and turned to the hot seat battle against Cole, who'd sent Sliva over 7-3. Montour took their first of two 7-3, and waited in the hot seat for Cole to come back.

Meanwhile, on the loss-side, Ross met up with Mary Hopkin, who'd been sent west by Cole and defeated Kris Robbins 6-4 and Suzanne Smith 6-3. Sliva drew Kim Jones, who'd been sent west by Montour and defeated Mona Stickley, double hill, and Deby Welfringer 6-2. Sliva and Jones fought to double hill before Sliva prevailed, advancing to the quarterfinals versus Ross, who'd defeated Hopkin, also double hill. Ross chalked up a second straight double hill win in the quarterfinal battle against Sliva and advanced to meet Cole in the semifinals. Cole got her second crack at Montour with a 6-3 victory over Ross.

November's season finale, though won by Cole, left Montour at the top of the 2011 tour rankings; each had won three stops. The single, race-to-9 finals went double hill before Montour prevailed to open the NWPA season the way she'd finished the previous year; at the top of the tour rankings.

players helped the Arizona Women's Billiards Tour kick off their 2012

season at Bullshooters in Phoenix, Az.The event was a qualifier for the WPBA's US Open and as would be expected for a qualifier, the event drew a fair share of players from out of state looking for that coveted WPBA invite. The field included the usual Vegas contingent as well as players from Minnesota, Illinois and California.

To most everyone's surprise, the Vegas contingent who dominated the tour in 2011, did not fare as well in this event. Stacy Allsup went "two and out" with losses to Kristen Haney and Susan Wilbur. Rebecca Wagner fared better, but bowed out in 5th place after back to back losses to Angel Paglia and Nina Tagley on Sunday.

After the 7-6 win over Wagner, Paglia then scored a 7-5 win over California's Stacy Novack to the take the hot-seat.

Novack bounced back with a 7-5 win of her own, over Arizona's Kristen Haney and the rematch with Paglia was on for the finals.

Paglia took control of the extended final match early and held a 7-4 lead in the race to nine match. Novack dug down and made a run to get within one rack at 8-7 before Paglia finally ended the match with a 9-7 victory.

Paglia earned $315 for first place, in addition to the paid entry into the WPBA US Open. Novack settled for $215 in prize money.

While the event was originally billed as a $300 added event, it turned out that a

total of $700 was added by the end of the weekend. The host location added $400 and another $300 was added by Jose

Gonzalez and two anonymous contributors.

The former United States National Snooker Champion, Ajeya Prabhakar, has won his first United States Snooker Association (USSA) Tour title of the 2011-12 season, sponsored by Aramith Billiard Balls, with victory in Event 9 at Ace Snooker Club in San Mateo, California. Prabhakar was the defending champion for this Tour event played a year ago, and it was also good to see a number of new players to the Tour in the full-field of entrants this past weekend. Also competing was the welcome return of Jeff Szafransky, a former San Francisco Snooker Champion and quarterfinalist in the United States National Snooker Championship, who won the first ever USSA Tour event played back in 2009 but has not competed for three years. Prabhakar, who also serves as the President of the USSA, was in fine form over the weekend as he won Group C without dropping a single frame, to set up a quarterfinal meeting with one of the co-owners of the Ace Snooker Club, Eric Ng, who finished up runner-up in Group D. The winner of Group D was newcomer to the Tour Graham Perry, originally from England where he learned his snooker, as he went undefeated to take his place in the quarterfinals where he would face Lai Ho Ng, the runner-up of Group A. The winner of Group A was Zhi Ming after winning all of his matches to secure his quarterfinal spot, where he would come up against Szafransky who sealed the runner's-up place in Group B. The remaining quarterfinal was to be contested between Andrew Lam, who won Group B, and the runner-up of of group C, Chris Zhou.

In the quarterfinals Prabhakar defeated Ng and Zhi overcame Szafransky both by 3-0 scorelines, and they would play each other in the semifnals. Zhou got past Lam 3-0 while Perry beat Lai 3-1 to set up the other semifinal. Prabhakar had few problems in booking his place in the final with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Zhi, and although the first two frames of the other semifinal between Perry and Zhou were shared, the Englishman then ran away to a 3-1 success. Prabhakar took the first frame of the race-to-four frames final, but Perry showed he would put up a challenge to the favorite for the title as he took the second frame on the final colored balls. Last year's runner-up in the United States National Snooker Championship then managed to pick off the following three closely fought frames to claim a 4-1 victory. Prabhakar was happy with what was his fourth USSA Tour event victory, but commented afterwards that he was more pleased about the great weekend of competition they had and to meet the new players to the Tour. The USSA would like to offer its thanks to Alan Kam and Eric Ng, the co-owners of the ACE Snooker Club, for hosting their second event on the 2011-12 USSA Tour and for their invaluable continued support. The 2011-12 USSA Tour next moves onto the 4 Kaz Snooker Club & Bar in Las Vegas for Event 10 over the weekend of March 31 & April 1.

The 2011-2012 Lucasi Hybrid Cues All American Tour – presented by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – conducted its twenty-sixth (26) stop at Dale’s Weston Lanes in Wausau, WI, March 10. Thirty-one (31) players sparred at the host site in a $500-added scratch 8-ball tournament. The A-side semifinals highlighted Sheboygan WI road partners John Kotnik and Terry “Ziggy” Zagar stamping their ticket to the A-side finals via respective wins over Jim Abt (Wausau, WI) 5-1 and Chris Jefferson (Crandon, WI) 5-2 in the semifinals. In the A-side finals, Kotnik clipped Zagar for the hot seat, 5-4.

On the B-side Rodney Coad (Stevens Point, WI) and Jim Abt (Wausau, WI) respectively relegated John Lewis (Suamico, WI) 5-4 and Jim Morris (Marathon, WI) 5-2 to 7th place. In the next round in turn, Coad and Abt tied for 5th place, falling to the respective hands of Chris Jefferson 5-2 and Duncan Kaufman (Sauk City, WI) 5-2. Kaufman then dispatched Jefferson to 4th place via a forfeit. In the B-side finals Kaufman fell to Terry Zagar by a 5-3 margin, setting up a rematch for the title between Kotnik and Zagar. Kotnik took the first set by a 5-4 margin for the tourney win!

Kotnik & Zagar Face Off

The 2011-2012 Lucasi Hybrid Cues All American Tour – presented by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – came to Legends Sports Bar in Clinton, IA, Saturday, March 10, with stop #25. The $500-added 8-ball handicapped tourney on 7-foot Valley bar boxes drew 29 players. Matt VanKampen (Clinton, IA) [rated a “5” on a regional handicap system used] took control of the A-side with an undefeated run to the semifinals. In the semifinals, VanKampen took down Keith Helfrich [6] (Sterling, IL) 5-2, while Ryan Short [4] (Moline, IL) outdistanced Rory Smith [4] (Galesburg, IL) 4-3. VanKampen then took down the hot seat by a 5-2 margin over Short.

On the B-side Doric Smith [4] (Galesburg, IL) combined with Chad Vilmont [8] (Clinton, IA) to respectively oust at 7th place Alan Birkett [6] (Clinton, IA) 4-3 and John Sprague [5] (Albany, IL) 8-2. In the next round Vilmont continued on by eliminating Rory Smith at 5th place by a 8-3 margin, while Doric Smith’s run ended, losing to Keith Helfrich 6-3. In the B-side semifinals, Chad Vilmont, who suffered a 2nd-round loss, got further in stroke by ousting Keith Helfrich at 4th place, 8-2. Vilmont then took a place in the finals by capturing the B-side finals over Ryan Short 8-2. Vilmont had to defeat Matt VanKampen twice for the crown, and he succeeded, but it was not easy. Vilmont [8] won set #1 8-3 over VanKampen [5], and the deciding set went to the hill, where Vilmont prevailed again 8-4 for the title!

Though challenged by Jared McGee, who won five straight on the loss side and then, the opening set of a true double elimination final, Wendell Thompkins came back to win the second set, and for the first time, take home top honors at a stop on the Great Southern Billiard Tour. The $1,500-added event drew 60 entrants to Shore Thing Bar & Billiards in Myrtle Beach, SC, on the weekend of March 10-11.

From among the winners' side final four, Thompkins met up with Phillip Britt, who'd just sent McGee to the loss side. Joining them in the winners' side semifinals were Larry Jackson and Bobby Hicks. Thompkins defeated Britt 9-6, and faced Jackson, who'd downed Hicks 9-3. Thompkins got into the hot seat with a 9-4 win over Jackson and waited for McGee.

campaign with victories over William Foster 10-5 and Clint Clark 10-8. Britt picked up Chase Gilbert, who'd gotten by Nick Van Allen, double hill, and Brian Capps 7-7 (Capps, a double-A, had to reach 10). Hicks and Britt both fell in their first loss-side match; Hicks to McGee 10-1 and Britt to Gilbert 7-5, thus denying McGee a re-match opportunity versus Britt. McGee took the

quarterfinal match that followed against Gilbert 10-5.

McGee ended Jackson's semifinal bid for a re-match against Thompkins, defeating him 10-8. McGee then took the opening set of the true double elimination finals 10-6. Thompkins, though, came back to take the second set 9-8 to chalk up his first event win on the Great Southern Billiard Tour.

Tour directors Shannon and Marge Daulton thanked Brent and Ann Hudgins for hosting the event, as well as

sponsors Andy Gilbert Custom Cues, Nick Varner Cues and Cases, Mike Davis Exterminating, Tiger Products and Delta-13 racks. Next stop on the GSBT is a $1,500-added, bar table tournament scheduled for March 17-18 at Raisin' Cain's in Inman, SC.

STEVIE MOORE vsShane Van Boening has won the Players Championship at the Super Billiards Expo and has sent yet another strong message that he is the cream of the American crop of pro pool players. When Shane gets close to the finals there is just no stopping him. Even a long trip throughout the one-loss side (Shane lost early to Brian Brekke) cannot cause his game to weaken or his heart to lose spirit.

On Sunday Van Boening swept aside the rest of the best as if they were mere mortals trying to exist in the realm of the gods. Raj Hundal got the message first when he just sat and watched as Van Boening picked the meat off of his bones and tossed him to the scrap heap 10-1. Hundal was no more a participant in that match than was the kid in the third row of the stands. Darren Appleton would fare little better. The two-time US Open champion was dismantled and destroyed by the rack-running ability of the South Dakota Kid. Obviously dismayed by Van Boening's ability to control the table and deny an opponent any opportunity to rally, Appleton found himself a 10-2 loser against Van Boening who only appeared to get stronger with each stroke.

Van Boening had one more hill to climb. An undefeated and confident Stevie Moore was waiting for him. That confidence would take an early beat-down as Van Boeing wasted no time in establishing a 7-0 lead in the final race to 13 games. Moore stayed cool and fought well enough to bring the score to 12-6, but Van Boening on the hill is a tough task and when Moore fouled early in the final rack to give ball in hand to Van Boening it was the end. Shane Van Boening won his third Players Championship with a 13-6 victory against Moore.

Shane is now on track for what could become a record year. Prior to this victory he nabbed both the Derby City 9-Ball and One-Pocket events, taking Master of the Table honors with those wins. The Kid also commands the short track stuff. He won the US Bar Box Championship Open 10-Ball division held by CSI in Reno. All of this comes on the heels of a final quarter of 2011 that presented Van Boening with victories at the Steve Mizerak Championship, Turning Stone XVIII and at the Ocho Open.

The Champion of Champions event opened Thursday morning with 11 of the best players in America, each a former national champion or second place winner, anxious to prove who would lay claim to this year's title. Following a short practice schedule on the three Gabriels Kronos tables, the first round began. Last year's trophy holder, Pedro Piedrabuena beat Bill Smith 35-18 in 30 innungs on table 1. Miguel Torres, after driving 3 hours from New York and testing the table for a few minutes, won the lag and soon was in the midst of a run of 10. A 35 to 20 victory over Frank Torres in 19 innings quickly followed. Not to be outdone, Hugh Patino had a run of 13 in his opening round victory over George Ashby (35-20 in 28 innings).

Good play continued during the second round. In a mild upset, Michael Kang bested Jae Cho 35 to 19 in 21 innings. Hugo Patino won his second of the day by a score of 35 to 14 over Frank Torres in just 24 innings. Sonny Cho topped Mercedes Gonzales in 25 innings, holding his opponent to 17 innings. Mercedes played well but missed several close billiards and could not keep pace.

The struggles began in the third round. Mazin Shooni averaged 1.000 in beating Mercedes, who scored but 20. Again, Mercedes missed half a dozen close ones, and it was clear that both she and Mazin had trouble adjusting to the slippery and long tables. Pedro won his second of the day but also had trouble, needing 31 innings to defeat George Ashby, who managed 29 in the same number of frames. But the real story—and the first surprise of the event—happened on table 3 in round 3. Bill Smith and Jae Cho traded billiards for the first dozen innings, but Mr. Three Cushion started to pull away after the score was knotted at 10. By playing careful defense, Smith left his opponent without any good leaves inning after inning. Gradually, Smith pulled away, finally securing a 35 to 24 victory in 31 innings.

At the end of two rounds, Pedro Piedrabuena had two victories and was averaging 1.148. Hugo Patino also had two victories but a better grand average, at 1.346. Mercedes Gonzales, Frank Torres, Jae Cho and George Ashby were winless, each 0-2. Bill Smith was 1 and 1, and Michael Kang, Miguel Torres and Mazin Shooni were each 1-0. The tournament average was at 1.064.

DAY 2: The second day of the Champion of Champions extravaganza started Friday morning with the crowd still buzzing about the night before, when Mazin Shooni and Sonny Cho added another classic match to their storied rivalry. The two old foes traded billiards for twenty innings, each averaging over 1.000. Mazin slowly pulled ahead, 32 to 28. He made a reverse spin shot for 33, and a 7 rail back-up for 34. The balls rolled favorably, and he was left with a short-angle shot, which he played with confidence and a little spin. As Mazin's cue ball came off the second rail, Sonny got out of his chair to offer his hand in congratulations, but to his and Mazin's surprise, the cue ball flattened out off the third rail. It missed by less than nothing Mazin would later say. Mazin sat down, and Sonny used the reprieve by running 7 and out for the victory.

In other action Thursday evening, George Ashby jumped to a 10 to 0 lead in 3 innings but Miguel Torres stormed back with runs of 10 and 11, notching a 35 to 20 win in 19 innings. Pedro Piedrabuena posted the best game, closing out Mercedes Gonzales in 18 innings. As play ended Thursday, Piedrabuena, Hugo Patino, Sonny Cho and Miguel Torres remained undefeated.

In first round action Friday morning, Hugo Patino put his undefeated record on the line as he lagged for the break against Mercedes Gonzales. She won the right to open the game, and she started with a 3, then followed it up with another 3, then a 4. She raced to a 20 to 4 lead, and then built it to 25 to 8. A long time out called by Hugo cooled Mercedes off, and he started making billiards in twos and threes. The audience wondered whether she could finish without being caught. She couldn't. Hugo caught her at 31, notched another in the next inning and closed with a run of 3 for a 35 to 31 victory.

Mercedes had played well, averaging .796, but had nothing to show for it except five losses. After a bad first day, Jae Cho staged a comeback with a morning victory over George Ashby. In the next session, he ran 4 and out to best Mazin Shooni 35 to 30. He closed the day with a 35 to 20 victory over Mercedes, sealing the W with a run of 7 and out.

After a fine victory over Jae Cho during the first day, Bill Smith was not able to continue the success, with losses to Hugo and Mazin. He rebounded with a victory over Frank Torres, who had shown great skills at times but had been inconsistent. Ashby finally found his aim in his last game of the day, defeating Sonny Cho in 20 innings.

As Friday ended, Pedro, Hugo and Miguel had still not tasted defeat. They would clash on Saturday. Sonny Cho had just one loss. Mazin Shooni and Michael Kang had three losses each. All the other players had at least four losses. The overall grand average at the close of the last session on Friday was 1.096, with Pedro's 1.423 and Hugo's 1.411 setting the standard for all others.

DAY 3:At the start of the third day of play at the Champion of Champions, tournament director Charles Brown awarded Pedro Piedrabuena a victory by forfeit when Mazin Shooni did not arrive on time for their 11:00 a.m. match. After waiting 40 minutes, Brown declared the forfeit. Mazin arrived a few minutes later, but Brown's decision stood despite Mazin's protest. With the forfeit in hand, Pedro remained undefeated, but not for long.

Also victorious in the first round was Hugo Patino. Sonny Cho rebounded after his Friday night loss with a 35 to 24 victory over Jae Cho, whose struggles continued. With Mazin still fuming over his forfeit, he found it hard to concentrate, and Miguel Torres rolled over him to a 35 to 21 victory. Mercedes Gonzales edged Frank Torres by 1, and in one of the highlight matches between two veterans, George Ashby bested Bill Smith 35 to 23. According to Smith, that was the 39th time the two had played in a tournament. Their rivalry actually goes back to when they were youngsters.

PIEDRABUENA Retains His Crown

A mutual friend, Bill Johnson from Michigan, clapped his hands as Ashby made the final billiard. “They started playing when they were 12 years old,” Johnson explained. “They've made a lot of billiards against each other in their careers.”

Miguel Torres could not keep pace with Pedro or Hugo, losing to Sonny Cho 35 to 24 in 18 innings. With the score 28 to 25 in favor of Torres, Cho broke open the game with a run of 7, then closed it out two innings later. On the adjacent table, Pedro put on a display of control and position, crushing Jae Cho in 18 innings.

And then, the plot thickened. Jae Cho dispensed Patino with a marvelous display of cue wizardry. Twenty minutes later, Pedro stepped to the table for his last match of the day. A win over Miguel Torres would all but seal the tournament trophy, but Torres proved a wily foe, squeaking out a 35 to 34 victory and tossing the tournament into chaos.

After Saturday's last session, the overall grand average was 1.070. Pedro and Hugo have posted the highest grand averages, both over 1.400. With Pedro, Hugo and Miguel sitting with one loss each, the grand averages were critical, as the highest average would be the tie-breaker for anyone with identical win-loss records.

DAY 4:The final match of the day came down to Pedro Piedrabuena and Hugo Patino. With Hugo comfortably in the lead early on, Pedro decided to run a 16, the tournament high run, taking over the lead. Talk about timing. Hugo took a time out and rightfully so.As it neared the end of the 35 point match, Pedro was winning 34-31, but Hugo was at the table. He quickly ran a 2 and then had what seemed to be a fairly easy shot but missed it a hair long. Pedro was left with a very difficult position where it seemed like he might have a 5 or 7 rail around the table shot, but potential kisses were everywhere. Instead he played a very difficult, precision up and down shot which looked as if he may have had a little reverse english on it. The last ball was right in the middle of the table so it was a very small target. Pedro made the fantastic out shot and sealed his 2nd consecutive victory as the Champion of Champions!
