I am delighted to introduce The Point’s autumn programme. This season The Point plays host to an exciting mix of world class premieres and cutting edge new work. I’m particularly excited to be presenting the premieres of bgroup’s The lessening of difference and the award winning RedCape Theatre’s 1 Beach Road, both exciting companies who make extraordinary work.

Add into the mix comedy, children’s work, music and our ever popular Christmas show and we hope you find something to enjoy in this autumn/winter season.

The Featherstonehaughs draw on the sketch books of Egon Schiele Wednesday 5th October 8.00pm

Lea Anderson’s all male contemporary dance company, The Featherstonehaughs, hit the road for the very last time.

This dynamic re-working of their 1998 hit show features live original music, amazing costumes by Oscar winning Sandy Powell and Anderson’s iconic choreography, as the six Featherstonehaughs inhabit the tormented vision of Austrian expressionist artist Egon Schiele.

South East Dance and The Point present

Pre:View – James Wilton and James Cousins Thursday 10th November 6.30pm

The Point and South East Dance are delighted to present the work of two London Contemporary Dance School graduates James Wilton and James Cousins prior to bgroup’s performance.

James Cousins Dance is inspired by current news headlines of loss and grief, this moving trio will look at the fragility and vulnerability of people’s situations and how we cope with the loss of someone we couldn’t imagine our world without.

James Wilton Dance features five performers pushed to their physical and mental limits using Wilton’s signature high risk contact work and challenging, athletic

movement. Cave is an exploration of our perceptions of reality drawing influence from Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.

Pre:View is a South East Dance initiative that supports early career artists and choreographers, it allows artists to test out new work and enables audiences to spot the new dance talent of tomorrow.

Tickets are free to audiences of bgroup’s The lessening of difference. Pre:View will take place in the Creation Space, therefore capacity is limited and tickets must be booked in advance via the box office.

Acclaimed choreographer Ben Wright presents the premiere of his company bgroup’s new work.

Eye to Body, Eye to Eye, Voice to Voice, Hand to Hand, Arm to Shoulder, Arm to Waist, Mouth to Mouth, Hand to Head, Hand to Body, Mouth to Breast…

Human beings have a universal need to belong and to love, requirements that are potentially fulfilled through the participation in relationships.

Following on from the critical success of bgroup’s last work about around, twice Place Prize semi-finalist and Jerwood award-winning choreographer Ben Wright creates his most ambitious work to date.

The lessening of difference marks an exciting new collaboration for Wright with the author David Charles Manners (‘In the shadow of crows’) that reflects upon the concept of intimacy.

With an electrifying sound design by Alan Stones and sumptuous lighting design by Guy Hoare, Wright and his quartet of exceptional dancers invite you to dream and join them in snowfall…

Kith/KinThursday 3rd November 7.30pm

A breathtaking double bill that explores masculinity and male identity.

Before Night Fell (created with choreographer Beth Cassani) looks at notions of friendship, camaraderie and bravery and sees the company develop concepts of physical risk, game structures, intimacy, vulnerability, power and manipulation.

Rites uses the personal and shared histories of Company Chameleon founders Anthony Missen and Kevin Turner, charting

the passage from childhood, through adolescence into adulthood. Powerful and poignant in its exploration of those events and experiences that shape us, the work combines bold athleticism with moments of touching sensitivity.

The evening will also feature a brand new work performed by FuzzyLogic Dance Company, created by Company Chameleon.

A scratch night featuring regional and national dance artists sharing new work, work in progress or just the seed of an idea.

The Point will be transformed into the intimate setting of a wine bar, the evening will feature unexpected sporadic performances allowing you to move freely through different spaces to see new works and get close to the performances.

From Scratch nights offer the chance to watch some of the most innovative work whilst it’s still in development, meaning you have the chance to offer your thoughts and feedback and maybe even influence the work in some way, whilst also supporting the region’s creative talent.

The evening will also feature a special preview of work by ZoieLogic Dance Theatre. Choreographer Zoie Golding

(founder of male youth FuzzyLogic Dance Company) is stepping into the professional arena with the aim of changing the perception of male dance; this will be the first opportunity to see a work-in-progress performance of their new show Echo which has been made under the artistic mentorship of Amit Lahav (Gecko Theatre Company).

The premiere of a new show by award winning company RedCape Theatre.

A tale of defiance, a shrinking island, synchronized swimming and trying to turn back the tide. By exploring the metaphorical connections between Alzheimer’s and Coastal Erosion the play asks, what is it like to lose everything - your home and your memories?

With the inexorable encroachment of the shoreline, the sea swallows the row of bungalows, the road, the garage, and eats its way to the back door of ‘1 Beach Road’ while the inhabitants refuse to budge. Victoria and Jane are left standing at the edge of a precipice.

Like The Idiot Colony the starting point is true stories, drawing from interviews with residents of coastal towns that are disappearing into the sea and ongoing research into the experiences of Alzheimer’s patients and their carers.

RedCape Theatre is committed to telling true stories that matter, move and entertain, with ordinary people in extraordinary situations. Audiences and critics have acclaimed their unique visual, physical storytelling, sense of humour and original writing.

All in the words of Christopher Marlowe (but not necessarily in the right order)

Some of the most popular dramatic verse ever written and some splendid comedy to go with it. Dance, song, the dulcet tones of the ukulele: a touch of ventriloquism; smoke, mirrors and cheap tricks.

To keep themselves amused, Lucifer and Mephistopheles enjoy a picnic and do a few

cabaret turns while Faustus, in exchange for his soul, gets a very poor deal indeed. Dr. Faustus is a fast-paced, highly theatrical, highly entertaining evening, full of surprises and fun.

Reckless Sleepers presents

SchrödingerWednesday 30th November 7.30pm

Reckless Sleepers go back and forward in time recreating one of its most celebrated performances, Schrödinger.

In 1933 Erwin Schrödinger won the Nobel Prize for his contribution to Quantum Mechanics. He theorised a box in which a cat exists as living and dead at the same time. In 1998 Reckless Sleepers built that box – and now over a decade later, they are climbing back inside....

Schrödinger is about thought experiments, cats, René Magritte, love, time, mathematics, observations, truth lies and alcohol.

In one of the company’s most celebrated performance pieces the impossible is probable; truth and illusion are inseparable.

Laws are made bent then broken. It’s a visually mesmerising performance that sways between question and answer, chaos and order, what we can measure and what we can’t.

The Propaganda Company presents

Following a residency at The Point, The Propaganda Company will open the doors on their artistic process to allow audiences unique access to a work in progress performance of their latest production of King Lear followed by a short discussion.

Blending digital technology, political commentary and powerful imagery to retell Shakespeare’s classic tale, this production will present the text as an exploration of state, power and control in the 21st Century.

Created in association with The Point, Eastleigh with funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Friday 16th - Wednesday 21st December The Point Youth Theatre is delighted to present JM Barrie’s timeless story that has captured the imagination of children and adults alike for more than a hundred years.

This enchanting production follows Wendy, John and Michael Darling as they are led on a magical adventure through Neverland by the mischievous Peter, meeting a gang of Lost Boys, a tribe of pirates, mermaids, crocodiles, Tinker Bell and of course the vicious Captain Hook along the way.

Following the success of last year’s Christmas production of A Christmas Carol, The Point Youth Theatre teams up with The Point Youth Dance Company to make this year’s production bigger than ever. Roddy Woomble + Rachel Sermanni Tuesday 11th October 7.30pm

“Tender and epic, enormous yet touching” – BBC Music on My Secret is My Silence

Familiar to music fans as the front man of indie-rock band Idlewild and now as an acclaimed solo folk artist in his own right, Roddy Woomble showcases his softer, acoustic solo sound.

Roddy Woomble released his first solo album ‘My secret is My silence’ in 2006 to critical acclaim from both folk and rock press. the album featured celebrated folk musicians Andy Cutting, Kate Rusby and ian Carr. Roddy has since continued to work with some of the most notable musicians in folk including Kris Drever and John McCusker.

His performance at the Point sees Roddy present songs from his new solo album ‘the impossible song and other songs’ and of course from his notable back catalogue including a few idlewild numbers for good measure.

Lea Anderson & The Featherstonehaughs Choreographer Lea Anderson has led her two dance companies, the Cholmondeleys and Featherstonehaughs for nearly 25 years, creating highly distinctive and visually striking dance. Lea invites dance and/or theatre practitioners, performers, teachers and choreographers to a full day of exploration. Working together through the use of choreographic devices which Lea often draws upon in the creation of her own

work, participants will be invited to discover new approaches to making work.

In Conversation with Anna Zubrzycki, Song of the Goat Theatre If you saw this wonderful Polish company during its visit to The Point last October you will remember Anna Zubrzycki’s extraordinary performance as Lady Macbeth. Anna returns to The Point this autumn to lead a five-day workshop for professional performers, at the end of which she will be in conversation with Point director Sarah Brigham, discussing and showing some

recorded excerpts of the company’s work in preparation for its new production inspired by Shakespeare’s King Lear.
