WelcomeI’m delighted to introduce my first season as the new Director of The Point. You’ll see that we have redesigned our brochure, to make it easier to find what you may be interested in. We have also integrated our Creative Learning programme - so now you can not only see the best Dance and Theatre at The Point, you can take part in it too!

To celebrate my first season I have programmed a number of firsts - premieres, previews and companies who haven’t been seen by Point audiences before. To guide you, look out for Point 1st, wherever you see the stamp you know you can catch it at The Point before it goes on a national or sometimes international tour. There are some fantastic shows opening with us; make sure you see the mind blowing production of Macbeth by the internationally acclaimed Song of the Goat Theatre and Gregory Maqoma’s Southern Bound Comfort before they both tour nationally.

We know exciting and innovative work can be created when artists connect and respond to their audiences so we’ve programmed post show discussions, open rehearsals and a new series of scratch nights where artists can show work that is in development and gain feedback from the most important people in theatre – the audience.

Also in the coming months we will be re-launching our new website. Watch out for a host of interactive features including artists blogs and behind the scenes info. There’s a new addition to the foyer too as The Point Café bar re-launches with tasty light lunches and the best coffee by local company Mozzo.

I hope you enjoy my first season and I look forward to welcoming you to The Point.

“Unconventionality is a hallmark of Anderson’s choreography” – The Times

The Featherstonehaughs presents

Edits Wednesday 22nd & Thursday 23rd September 7.30pm

The premiere of the highly anticipated new work by Lea Anderson for her six strong, all-male dance company The Featherstonehaughs.

Using a drastic and compelling new way of creating movement material, Lea Anderson takes to extremes her translation of the conventions of film, photography, and painting into dance.

Edits draws on the peculiar elasticity of filmic time, the dramatic rhythm of film editing, the ability to heighten effect through extreme close up and while revealing the hidden rhythm achieved in film with the use of zooms, pans and tilts, creating a totally original live world of its own.

Featuring costumes by three-time Oscar winner Sandy Powell and an original score played live, Edits is the perfect continuation of The Featherstonehaughs’ venture into new dance territory.

Created by Subathra Subramaniam, former co-director of Angika Dance Company, with text by the South Bank’s internationally acclaimed poet-in-residence Lemn Sissay.

A chance to creatively support artists

Expect music, theatre, dance and all the things in between.

Sometimes the artists may stop in the middle for advice, sometimes they ask you to leave a comment on a card but always they will meet in the bar afterwards where

you can offer feedback over a drink or two.

Artists from across the region are invited to present excerpts of a new piece or work they have in

development. The performance will take place in our Studio Theatre or in any nook and cranny

of the building! Audiences are invited to watch these short snippets and offer their feedback

to help the artists develop it further.

“So beautifully spoken …The performance is charged with a tragic energy, played in an extraordinary way by the whole group” – Gazeta Wyborcza

The Point presents

Song of the Goat Theatre’s MacbethWednesday 6th – Friday 8th October 7.30pm

Shakespeare’s tragedy is retold in this powerful new production by the award winning company Song of the Goat Theatre (Teatr Pieśń Kozła).

Beginning its life during the RSC’s complete works season in Stratford upon Avon, this ground-breaking production of Macbeth re-imagines Shakespeare’s tale of murder and madness.

Presented by an international ensemble of eight extraordinary performers, the production explores the musicality and muscularity of Shakespeare’s poetry and the colours and sounds of his extraordinary language. The story is there, the characters are there, but in witnessing the drama realised through a uniquely imaginative physical and vocal language, we understand the story anew.

Macbeth is at once beautiful and chilling, shifting seamlessly from dramatic scene, to visceral movement and soaring song, astounding its audience with the power of its performers.

The tour of Macbeth has been supported by The Point, ACE and the Instytut Adama Mickiewicza.

In the Studio Theatre

William Shakespeare’sThe Rape of Lucrece

Wednesday 13th October 7.30pm

RSC actor and Olivier award nominee Gerard Logan vividly brings to life Shakespeare’s brilliant and brutal narrative

poem with a powerful one-man performance in the intimate Studio Theatre at The Point.

The Rape of Lucrece, dedicated by Shakespeare to his patron the 3rd Earl of Southampton, gives an account of the legendary Roman

figure Lucretia, and how the terrible crime of rape and its dreadful consequences are thought to have brought about the

establishment of the Roman Republic. But Shakespeare goes beyond the obvious, following the ramifications of the crime

wherever they take him, shining a light on a band of behaviour encompassing the bestial and the beautiful.

“This book is not about heroes. English poetry is not yet fit to speak of them” – Wilfred Owen

Theatre Unlimited presents

Not About Heroes Thursday 11th November 7.30pm

A special Remembrance Day performance of Stephen Macdonald’s award-winning play that tells the story of the fascinating friendship of First World War poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen.

Set in a Scottish war hospital during WW1, this is the story of the meeting and developing friendship of celebrated writer Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. It was this profoundly creative and liberating friendship that finally unlocked Owen’s poetic genius to express the horror and pity of war, a war which claimed his life exactly one week before the Armistice.

“There is something about the simplicity of this show that is unbearably moving” – The Guardian on Full Review

Reckless Sleepers presents

It’s going to be a long long time Thursday 21st & Friday 22nd October 7.30pm

I wanted to say something here that wasn’t structured, that wasn’t learnt or staged. It’s at the beginning because I wanted to say something before we started. Before we set the countdown. Before I started to perform.

In summer 2010 whilst working in The Point’s Creation Space, Reckless Sleepers realised that they were interested in the idea of time. The Company started to think about time and travelling and rehearsals for the lunar landings. They started to think about what happens when performers become moon rock, or re-enact a zero-gravity moonwalk or leave footprints that will never disappear. Displaying Reckless Sleepers’ trademark organised chaos It’s going to be a long long time has been developed through a unique system of layering ideas and fragments, experiments and successes to form a final performance with an identity of its own.

Proteus presents

HoudiniSunday 31st October 7.30pm

Escapologist, magician, secret agent, lover, husband, devoted son, enemy of the establishment, Harry Houdini was all and none of these things. His life remains a mystery, and his greatest trick remains his ability to escape interpretation, until now...

Using Proteus’ distinctive style of fusing physical performance, circus, magic and music, Houdini will be resurrected to tell his remarkable story.

An irreversible and chaotic shift in the world’s climate system is already under way. A shadowy cabal of the global elite conspires to bring about a drastic solution. An eminent

primatologist demonstrates the remarkable abilities of a newly discovered species - the Giant Mountain Bonobo.

Told through physical theatre, delicate puppetry and striking video effects, at the heart of this darkly comic show

is a profound and urgent message.
