The DAM consists of several impressive galleries, including the Anthony and Delisa Mayer Photography Gallery, which opened three years ago. The museum began collecting photographs in 1937, when it purchased a complete set of The North American Indian, a famous project by Edward S. Curtis. For the following eight decades, various departments of the museum formed their own independent photography collections, which the museum consolidated in 2008 with the establishment of a Photography Department. Since 2010, the Photography Department has maintained a permanent gallery to display its collection.
