The old saying goes it takes a village to raise a child, but I also believe that it takes a community to make the world a better place for homeless, abused, neglected, and unwanted animals. It takes each of us to spread love and awareness within the community and to work together on behalf of animals, in order to save as many lives as possible. Animals are a wonderful part of many of our lives. They bring us comfort, companionship, and joy. They make us laugh, instill hope, and give us unconditional love. They bring us sorrow when they leave us, but leave us with cherished memories and an understanding of what true friendship is. An estimated 7.6 million companion animals are relinquished to shelters nationwide each year. For many first time pet owners, there can often be a stigma attached to dogs and cats that come from shelters (such as SafeHaven) that these pets were given up because they didnt make good pets.THIS IS FAR FROM THE TRUTH

The four main reasons many animals are given up to shelters across the nation are:

    1. Owners are moving2. Landlord doesnt allow pets3. Cost of care for the animal4. Too many animals in the household

I will leave you with a quote that I just recently found that ties all of this together so well.Rescue animals arent broken, theyve simply experienced more life than other animals. If they were human, we would call them wise. They would be the ones with the tales to tell and the stories to write, the ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage. Dont pity them. Help the rescue. Donate. Foster. Adopt. But most of all be proud you have their greatness by your side. -Author Unknown

    Foster Care

This Pet Press is all about Community Service, and its with our communitys help that SafeHaven is able to save thousands of lives every year. Nowhere is this more evident than our foster care program, where community members shelter, care for and love our dogs and cats that are too young, frightened or fragile to be in the shelter environment.

Wayne Graham, a resident of Sweet Home and one of our many life-changing foster parents, saved nine lives when he took in the pregnant blue Pit Bull, Wiggles. Wiggles arrived at SafeHaven on May 15th, 2015, balding, terrified, and pregnant. Christine Gibson, a SafeHaven employee and Grahams stepdaughter, was worried for the puppies health. Wiggles was in such bad shape, she said, and I couldnt feel any movement in her belly. I thought the puppies might be stillborn.

Two weeks later, though, Christine was happily proven wrong. Despite their attempts to convince her to use the whelping box set up in their laundry room, Wiggles gave birth to eight healthy puppies in the fresh, open air in Grahams backyard. It took her three or four

puppies to figure out what to do with them, laughed Christie. It was a good thing Wayne was keeping an eye on her. She forgot about one, but he revived him and we named him Lucky. She figured it out, though, and now Wiggles is a great mama!

Thanks to Graham and Gibson, Lucky and his seven siblings are plump, happy puppies who will find wonderful homes soon. Wiggles, whose skin issues are improving, is healthy, but suffers from separation anxiety. She will be put into SafeHavens foster-to-adopt program and will stay with Graham until she finds her forever home.

Without caring foster parents like Graham, dedicated staff like Gibson, and the support of community members like you, SafeHaven would not be able to provide the much needed care and support to hundreds of animals just like Wiggles and her puppies. If youd like to join our community of foster parents or donate to the program, please contact our foster care coordinator today at [email protected]. Together, through community service, we are changing lives.

Marilyn Peterson and Kaysha Rogers are the leaders of SafeHavens Behavior and Training Department. Native Oregonians, the pair have years of experience behind them and developed a love of animals at an early age. Ive always been passionate about animals, says Marilyn. I grew up doing 4H, showing large animals and horses. I volunteered at SafeHaven for about a year before I was hired on an animal care technician, and spent a while working at various positions within the shelter before I realized my dream of working in the training department. I love working with the shelter dogs, and am extremely motivated in helping our dogs succeed and become great, adoptable pets!

Kaysha has a similar background. I grew up showing dogs and horses in 4H, and focused on agility, confirmation and obedience. I loved it, and decided I wanted to continue doing it for a career. I graduated from Oregon State University in Animal Science, with the Animal Behavior option. I saw SafeHaven as an opportunity to work with the community. I love the facility and couldnt wait to become a part of the organization!

When theyre not busy at the shelter, both Marilyn and Kaysha have rescue dogs of their own at home, along with lots of other pets. The duo loves to see pet owners be able to correct problematic behaviors through positive reinforcement and training, and to see both community members and their pets learn new things and reach goals they never thought possible.

Are you interested in joining Marilyn and Kaysha for a class, one-on-one consultation or seminar? Stop by the Training Center today, or view our complete schedule at SafeHavenHumane.com. We cant wait to see you!

Odie My aunt, Joan, adopted Moby for me when he was 2 months old from your shelter and I wanted to update you on how he is doing. He is now known as Odie and he is doing wonderful! I was going through a rough patch post college when my aunt brought him home, and he has been such a ray of light for me. I cant believe he has been with me for a full year already. Odie is full of energy, he loves to run and fetch, especially squeaky toys. When playtime is over he loves to crawl under covers and nap. He is such a sweet dog, when I feel down, or things arent going well, he is right there laying his head on my lap. When I look at his little face, it keeps me going. He does have a mischievous side. He loves candy and tries to get it at any cost. I cant thank your shelter enough for bringing this little guy in to my life. He has helped me through some tough times this year and I love him more than anything.

Serving the Community Through Adoption Theres nothing we love more at SafeHaven than hearing about how our furry alumni are settling in with their new pet parents. Entropy & HoneyMaid In 2010, my husband came to SafeHaven in search of a feline companion. A funny little black kitten called Shorty climbed up his arm the minute he opened her cage, perched on his shoulder, and claimed her place in his heart. He renamed her Entropy because like the thermodynamics term, his new kitten had a knack for increasing the amount of chaos in a room by trying to occupy as many spaces as possible. Entropy still enjoys exploring and trying to figure out just how many places she can occupy. Her other favorite things include tuna, her kitty tower, which I bought especially for her when my husband and I got married, cat naps, and hanging out with people in the bathroom -- you can always count on her to be by your side while brushing your teeth or taking a bath. The latest addition to our family, Honey-Maid the puppy, was adopted from SafeHaven in the summer of 2014. She was part of a litter of three Chihuahua mixes that were all named after different parts of a smore; we never changed her name because we thought it suited her sweet, sunny personality perfectly. Honey-Maids favorite things include cheese, playing fetch (tirelessly!), going on walks, taking car trips of any kind -- her presence has a way of making any journey more pleasant, and making new friends everywhere she goes with her enthusiastic energy and ability to dance on her hind legs whenever she wants something. Unfortunately, she also enjoys pestering Entropy. Luckily, Entropy has a certain way of establishing her seniority by letting Honey-Maid know just whats what. The two animals have learned to live in relative harmony and even seem to find each other entertaining. And there is nothing like seeing the two of them resting on the couch together after a long day. Both of these animals bring so much color and joy to our family. Much thanks to SafeHaven for bringing them into our lives! And for giving so many animals a chance to find happy homes.

    Alex

Maisie Just a note to let you know that Maisie is doing very well here with us. She is very sweet and loving and has really attached herself to me. She has met several of our friends and been friendly and cooperative. We are really happy with her. Today is even better. She spent a couple of hours outdoors with me (on a long line) while I worked in the yard. She loved rolling in the grass and being outdoors! I cant imagine anyone giving up such a sweet dog.

Zoe Ten months ago I was scrolling through my news feed and saw a photo of a Rottweiler that had been rescued and was in need of a lot of medical care and love on SafeHavens Facebook page. They were looking for a foster home to help get her healthy. The moment I saw Zoey, I knew she was meant to be my dog. Fortunately, SafeHaven gave me the opportunity to foster her. Today, after lots of vet visits, medicine, special food, and lots and lots of love and cuddles, Zoey is healthy and I was able to adopt her. Because of SafeHaven, Zoey got another chance. I appreciate all of the SafeHaven staff so much! Also, thank you to everyone who donates to SafeHaven. You helped make it possible for Zoey to get a second chance and be healthy. You all saw a before photo from when she was rescued. Heres an after photo, taken today when I got to officially adopt Zoey! I am so happy that I get to give her a forever home with never ending love!

Smores It doesnt seem like its been nearly a year since I got a text message from my mom: SafeHaven has a bunch of rabbits. My son and I visited the newly opened facility and it was overwhelming; there were rabbits in hutches, rabbits in cages, rabbits in x-pens, rabbits in water troughs, there were rabbits everywhere. Our house bunny Cocoa was missing his best bun friend who had recently passed so we adopted a very sweet and curious mini-Rex that we named Smores. She took to being a house rabbit right away, using a litter box, hopping up and down the hallway, and doing bunny flops and binkies. Unfortunately Cocoa and Smores havent bonded, but they do peacefully co-exist in our Rabbit Room in their x-pens.During play time Smores likes to hang out with our cats or jump up on the couch and snuggle with us.Im so glad SafeHavens new facility was open and willing to take on the huge task of finding homes for these bunnies and guinea pigs.

The Southside Church of Lebanon was quiet on Saturday, July 25th, as mourners filed in to remember proud SafeHaven volunteer, foster parent and supporter, Jan Kummer, who was killed in a car accident on July 19th. Jan touched the hearts of many at SafeHaven with her infectious smile, her dedication to helping the animals and her willingness to do any job asked of her. She started volunteering in dog care in 2013, where her love for canine companionship quickly carried her into foster parenthood. She frequently opened up her home and heart to shy, nervous dogs that were unable to cope with the shelter environment, and worked hard to find them caring, loving homes. In the case of Tucker, a shy, 6-year-old German Short Hair Pointer featured in the last issue of the Pet Press, that home was with Jan. After months of helping him overcome severe anxiety, Jan adopted Tucker and had begun training him as a therapy dog for her diabetic grandson.

When she wasnt fostering or working with her dogs, Jan could often be found volunteering in the shelter. She used her many years of professional office experience to assist in the community outreach department, and was a go-to volunteer for all of SafeHavens many events. Whether it was in SafeHavens dog kennels or at an information booth out in the community, people were naturally drawn to Jans outgoing personality. She could always be found sharing stories of her adventures at SafeHaven with others, who, if they were previously a stranger, would walk away a new friend (and always much better informed of the many programs offered at SafeHaven).

SafeHaven offers its deepest condolences to all of Jans family and friends. She will be sorely missed.

    In Fond Memory

Jan helped at several SafeHaven events, including this years Linn County Fair Booth.

Kathy Sonderman is one of SafeHavens most dedicated volunteersand has been helping out around the shelter since 2010. She enjoyscoming to the shelter and helping the animals, whether it is throughsocialization, cleaning, or participating in the training program. Itsan awesome feeling to know the little I do has helped an animal finda home with loving and caring people. The staff and volunteers arewonderful to be with, too. I have met a lot of great people and made

friends with many volunteers and staff, said Kathy. When notvolunteering, she loves to golf and read, and recently began takingballet classes. She also spends a lot of time with Stella, a very shy,

timid Chihuahua mix she adopted from SafeHaven last fall after herbeloved Pomeranian, Nikki, passed. She and Stella have taken scent

classes here and are planning to do agility next.Thank you, Kathy, for all of your hard work!

According to Hawaiian tradition, the word Aloha can be used both in greeting and when saying goodbye. SafeHaven Humane did exactly that with their Splash into Summer Anniversary Event, which celebrated their first complete year in their Tangent location on Saturday, July 11th. The festive, Hawaiian themed event was marked with 50% off all adoption fees, visiting local vendors and rescue groups, a low cost vaccination clinic, low coast microchipping, raffles, a hot dog BBQ and of course, birthday cake to celebrate a huge first year in their new location.

SafeHaven may have said goodbye to 33 dogs and cats who found their furever homes during the event, but theyve spent the past year saying hello to hundreds more animals, services, and community members than ever before. Since moving into the new, 33,000 square foot facility last year, animal adoptions have increased by 63%, visitor and volunteer numbers have doubled, and the shelter has been able to reach out to more than

2,500 youth through their Humane Education program. This huge increase in both animals and community support has put SafeHaven well on its way to becoming the third largest non-profit organization in Linn County, and helped them find homes for over 1,900 animals in 2014 (many of whom would have been euthanized in other shelters were it not for SafeHavens Rescue Me transports).

And while SafeHaven enjoyed the celebration, they wont be relaxing on the beach for long. Fundraising will soon be underway for their new medical and intake area, which will boast a state of the art medical center, quarantine area and the required staffing and equipment to complete in-house spays and neuters. Until then, theyll be continuing to say Aloha to the thousands of animals that find a little piece of paradise within their walls as they wait for their long term homes.
