Executive Director Focus

What a wonderful way to begin our summer! On July 14, after 10 months of construction, SafeHaven Humane Society officially opened the doors to our new home at 32220 Old Hwy 34 in Tangent, Ore. The new 33,000

square foot pet adoption and education center completed Phase 1 of our three phase “Imagine the Possibilities” capital campaign. A history making day for the animals, the community, and for everyone who worked so hard to see this dream become a reality.

The little shelter that could, as SafeHaven had been called by many, has taken its first steps into becoming a leader not only in animal welfare but as a partner to others in our community. Within two weeks of opening our doors, SafeHaven was able to assist the Albany Police Department in housing, caring for, and adoption services for over 145 rabbits and 58 guinea pigs from a hoarding case within Albany City limits. Another day for the history books! Shortly after that, SafeHaven assisted with a life- saving transport of 56 dogs out of over- crowded shelters in California. Within four days, all the dogs had new families and loving homes; 56 lives saved in four days!

As we move forward into 2015, you will hear SafeHaven talk about Phase 2 of our “Imagine the Possibilities” capital campaign. Phase 2 will consist of the Medical and Isolation side of our new facility. Once complete, SafeHaven will have the ability to spay and neuter animals in-house, have a part time veterinarian on staff, and adequate space to house sick, injured or young animals while they wait for adoption.

But for today, I hope you celebrate with me! I cannot thank each and every one of you enough for your support of SafeHaven. I am so proud to be part of this amazing organization and I encourage each of you (if you haven’t already) to come out, take a look around, adopt a new friend, or simply stop by and say “Hi” because through your compassion and kindness you helped make history!

On behalf of the animals,

Chris Storm Executive Director

Hundreds of people came out in August to celebrate the grand opening of our new pet adoption & education center in Tangent. The event featured half off adoption fees, door prizes, food, activities for kids and training demonstrations by our behavioral team. Three of our rescue partners, Senior Dog Rescue, Kitty Angel Team, and Pet Adoption Network, were also on hand with adoptable animals. More than 35 dogs, cats and bunnies were adopted at the event.

“It was a wonderful day for not just the humane society but the community as well,” said Chris Storm, executive direc-tor. “This new pet adoption and education center will help so many animals and people in our region, and the event was a great way for us to celebrate with the community we serve each day.”

The new humane society opened its

doors in July, and is the culmination of four years of fundraising as part of the organization’s capital campaign. The first phase of the project has been completed and includes pet adoption areas, fenced exercise yards, a behavioral and training center, bathing and grooming facilities, laundry facilities, storage, pet food bank storage and distribution, isolation and quarantine areas, administrative space, a community education room, infrastruc-ture (mechanical, plumbing and electri-cal), and structural and energy efficiency improvements.

According Storm, “We are so excited to move all of the animals and our day-to-day operations to this new space. It will greatly expand what we are able to do for homeless animals and for people in our community.” Storm noted that the humane society is

still in the process of raising an additional $2.4 million needed to implement phase 2 of the campaign, which includes complet-ing the medical side of services, including the veterinary care center, including exam rooms, a surgical room, quarantine areas for both dogs and cats, and a reception/intake area for owner-released animals.

When complete, the new SafeHaven facility will more than double the current capacity in numbers of dogs and cats the humane society is able to serve. The out-reach and educational program areas will also increase providing SafeHaven the opportunity to better serve the community with expanded family activities, adult and youth humane education programs, canine behavioral training and more.

SafeHaven is working with architect, Architectural Werks, and contractor, R.L. Reimers Company, on the project.

Happy Tails

Bear Back in October of 2013 I adopted Bear from SafeHav-en. Right from the begin-ning he was a sweetheart. A well-behaved, gentle, polite velcro-dog. He’s taken a little while to settle in, but I knew the process was truly complete when he “liberated” some cooling slices of pizza from the kitchen counter. He’s such an intelligent dog and he’s fit himself into our family seamlessly. He enjoys trail-riding with the horses and adores herding seagulls at the beach. I’m happy to see him showing his complete personality, the good and the not-so-good. I am so thankful that I will have Bear with me for the rest of his days, my little shadow who shares my love of pizza. Emma

Harmony / Valkrie We adopted her into our home and life. At first we did not think we would like her size, however we love the fact that she can load up in the car with the kids for adventures. She is learning how to be a great trail dog when we ride our bikes or hike. She loves to camp with us and stays in the tent with us. She also loves to go to the dog park to play with the other doggies. Her only hitch is chasing our other fur babies, but we are work-ing hard on that.

Thank you! Whiteis Family

Shadow As I am typing, Shadow is snoring beside me on the couch. He’s done a lot of sleeping and relaxing over the last five days. We have him gated off in our living room for now. He and the cats are still wary of each other. In fact, he is downright scared of them. Twice while he was looking into the house through our glass doors, one of our cats swatted at him from the other side of the door (obviously making no contact because there is a pane of glass between them) which made Shadow yelp and jump back farther in one leap than I have ever seen a dog jump. I never saw him wag his tail at the shelter and now he does it so much. He is showing more and more of his goofy side every day. And it is very goofy. He’s enjoying his very own backyard and getting to know our neighborhood through the walks we take with him. His kisses are very delicate and he gives them often. We love him dearly. He listens very well with some of the basic ‘commands’ we’ve started with him. And he is an absolute dream in the car. I can’t wait for all the road trips we will be taking him on.

Best, Beth and Henry

Bella I adopted Bella last Wed evening and I want to report that we are madly in love and she is doing great! At first she slunk around my house, scared, not eating, not drink-ing, not peeing, not poop-ing... it was scary. I googled the problem and I thought I would try canned food. I ran out to the store, and when I offered it to her she slurped it up with evident hunger! So I am mixing it with her dry food, which she still prefers to ignore, and she is peeing and pooping. YEAH!She also walks out the drive-way with me every morning. I tell her to stay both verbally and with my hand signal and she waits while I go get the paper out by the road! She eagerly wants to go into her dog run each day, but once there does not seem to like it unless I stay with her. She is very attached to me. She gets along with my renter’s dog downstairs, and has not chased my chickens or sheep. But she does give the wild rabbits a run for their money...for which she gets lots of praise! She is a very special creature and I am so glad to be shar-ing my space, my time, my affection with her. Thanks to Marilyn especially for intro-ducing us!

A pet is lost every TWO SECONDS, and the Tagg GPS tracking system is designed to help you track your pet’s location 24/7 from your computer or mobile device. You can see where your dog is or monitor his activity levels. The lightweight pet tracker attaches to your dog’s existing collar, and is designed to be worn at all times, even while swimming. It turns your existing collar into a gps collar for your dog!

Tagg Location Tracking puts you in control of finding your pet. Unlike a microchip, which won’t alert you if your pet is lost, Tagg is a GPS pet tracker that sends you a text and email when your pet gets out so you can find him NOW.

With Activity Tracking, you can monitor your pet’s activity levels and spot long-term trends. Did you know that veterinarians recommend that dogs get 30-60 minutes of daily exercise? Tagg allows you to find out if your dog is getting enough, so you can be proactive about his health.

Enter promo code TIF1083 to get 10% off your Tagg Tracker, and a $25 donation will be made by Tagg to us! Get more info at www.tagg.com.

On July 23, less than two weeks after

opening the new facil-ity, SafeHaven Humane Society assisted the Albany Police Depart-ment with an animal hoarding case, resulting in the humane society taking in over 145 rab-bits and 58 guinea pigs. “While we have assist-ed police with hoarding cases in the past, this was the most animals we’ve ever taken in at one time,” said Chris Storm, executive direc-

tor. “Luckily, timing was on our side; we wouldn’t have been able to assist with this case had we not been in our new location.

After medical check ups, the guinea pigs and rabbits went up for adoption the following day, and more than 100 were adopted in just the first few days.

“I would like to thank everyone in the com-munity who helped us through donations,

adoptions and just vol-unteering time to help us care for the animals while we worked to get them adopted,” said Storm. “We truly could not have given them the care, attention and homes they deserved had the community not rallied and supported us.”

At press time, Safe-Haven is happy to announce that all of the rabbits and guinea pigs have been adpoted.

Humane society launches reading program for kids It’s important for kids to brush up on their reading skills, and it’s important for shelter animals to socialize with visitors; so we’ve combined both as part of our new Happy Tales Reading Program.

The program is open to kids in Kindergarten through middle school year-round during regular hours. Kids are invited to

come with a parent or guardian and read to a dog or cat. Kids may bring a book from home or use one from our library. As kids accumulate reading time with the animals they be-come eligible for prizes. For more information, contact Katie at 541.926.2924 or

[email protected].

Adopt-A-Book for SafeHavenYou’ve always been able to adopt a furry friend from SafeHaven, and now you can adopt a book for our new library. How does it work? Head to your favorite bookstore in person or online and find a book, or several books, about animals. Books can be shipped to us or dropped off at the front office. Books should be for kids both young and not so young, and can be new or used. A name plate listing you as the donor will be placed inside the front cover of the book or books you donate. Questions? Have you thought about what your wishes are for your estate – your cash savings, property, and personal belongings? Did you know that if your wishes are not clearly stated in a will or living trust that you may lose control over your belongings after your death?

Death is not something many enjoy thinking about, but for purposes of stating your wishes, it is something we all need to think about so that our loved ones are cared for in the event you are no longer with them. In addition to caring for those we love, we can also care for the causes we love by leaving a portion of our estate to a charitable organization like SafeHaven. We invite you to share your love of animals with future generations. Your planned gift, regardless of size, to SafeHaven Humane Society will make a lasting difference by providing a brighter future for the dogs and cats in our care.

A forever gift will leave a legacy of compassion and kindness for the animals.

In recent years, SafeHaven has been the recipient of two planned giving bequests from long-time donors, which made it possible for us to purchase the building and property that serve as our new pet adoption and education center and to complete phase one of the construction.

The simplest planned gift is a bequest to SafeHaven Humane Society in your will which can be in the form of cash, securities, real estate or other types of property.

Gifts of Life Insurance, Retirement Plan Assets, Charitable Remainder Trusts, Retained Life Interest, Charitable Lead Trusts and Charitable Gift Annuities are other options available to you the donor. It is important that you spend time with your attorney or CPA to determine which option works best for you.

We would be pleased to discuss planned giving with you in greater detail and work with you and your advisors to establish a workable plan.

For more information or to request a copy of our new “A Forever Gift” brochure contact Ron Thiesen, Development Director at 541-926-2924 or [email protected]

A bout of parvo affected Tippy’s legs when she

was just a puppy. The im-pact was so severe that her back legs turned sideways and she was unable to walk. After initially being cared for by the team at Albany

Animal Hospital, SafeHaven placed her in foster care with Denise Manning and her fam-ily in July 2013.

“When we brought Tippy home, it was clear she needed a lot of attention to get her back on the path to good health,” said Manning. “We did physical therapy with her three times ev-ery day for months, and worked with her to help her learn how to use her back legs.”

Over time and with Manning’s help, Tippy’s back legs straightened out and she began to walk. But then as she grew, her front legs be-gan to give out. They would bow out and her toes curled under; she stumbled frequently. It seemed that Tippy just couldn’t catch a break. Veterinarians Glaze and Gustafson recom-mended that braces be placed on her front

legs. They also recommended that her tendons be exercised several times daily.

“Tippy spent a year in braces and, during that time, we also did the exercises the vets recom-mended,” said Manning.

But for a dog who needed daily therapy and extra attention, Tippy’s spirit never wavered. “Tippy is very happy and outgoing. She loves to lick, especially ankles,” said Manning. “Physically, she can’t walk or run for very long distances. When she runs, she is a little “off” so it’s pretty hysterical watching her. But it doesn’t seem to bother her. She’s a happy dog, to say the least.” “It was a great day when she finally stabilized and no longer had to wear braces,” said Man-ning.

According to SafeHaven executive director Chris Storm, “So many of our animals, like Tippy, get their start in our foster care pro-gram. If it weren’t for Denise and her family opening their home and providing her with all of the care and therapy she needed, Tippy wouldn’t be where she is today.”

“Sometimes it’s a momma dog or cat and her babies, sometimes an injured animal, like Tip-py, that we need to place in foster care. And if it weren’t for caring families in our commu-nity like the Mannings, we would not be able to rescue and find home for 1,600 animals each and every year,” said Storm. “We are so grateful to all of our foster care providers for their commitment to us and the animals.” Think you have what it takes to be a foster family? Therapy and TLC Give a Dog Named Tippy a New Lease on LifeFoster Animal Focus

When six-year-old

Bella first came to SafeHaven, she had been found alone and starving; left to fend for herself. After a little TLC and many,

many months at SafeHaven, this lovely girl finally found a PURR-fect match. And Bella got a bonus, another longtime SafeHaven resident, Baby, was adopted with her. “My wife and I lost our old orange male tabby Oly this summer and decided it was time to adopt,” said Bella and Baby’s adopter, Greg Roe. “Our anniversary is coming up, so we thought there was not better gift than that of a cat… or two.” “We have adopted eight dogs and cats through the years and have enjoyed each and every one of them. We always adopt older animals that need some luck

and have never regretted an adoption. Older animals seem to appreciate being adopted more and let you know how much they appreciate your willingness to

give them a chance,” said Roe.

Because they are often overlooked at shelters, Roe is committed to adopt-ing older pets, so it’s no wonder he was drawn to Bella (8) and Baby (6). According to a recent survey by Petfinder.com, the sad truth is that senior pets often wait much longer for new homes than their younger counterparts. While typical pet spends about 12 weeks on the adop-tion website before finding a new home, senior pets’ profiles remain there nearly four times as long.

While this statistic was also true for Bella

and Baby, Roe is happy to report they are settling in to their new home wonderfully. They spend time at the windows watch-ing the birds and enjoying the sun. Roe reports that Baby has not stopped purring since arriving at her new home and Bella is all about the cuddles. “SafeHaven is also great at letting you know the personality of each animal and their habits and traits. That way you can find a pet that fits well with your family and lifestyle,” said Roe. “Both cats are very affectionate and very happy. We’re glad they’re part of our family.”

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month. All month long adoption fees on cats over the age of 6 will be half off at SafeHaven. Are you looking for your purr-fect match? Visit safehavenhumane.org and select the Adopt tab to view all of our adoptable animals.
