Situation Brief – Part 1The Peninsula Conflict… In 2008, Redland split into two countries based on the religious differences between the North and South. In the past 5 years the South, now known as Greenland, has made progress towards a democratic government, and most recently, efforts towards joining NATO. On the other hand, Redland has turned into a military state where religious laws govern the country and its people.

Before 2008, most of the financial centers were located in below the 39th parallel, which is now part of Greenland. As a result of losing those cities that connected Redland to the rest of the world’s economy and the implementation of strict religious rule, Redland’s economy has suffered significantly.

Due to their suffering economy and the concerns over security risks of having Greenland join NATO and NATO bases being located on their border, Redland launched a coordinated invasion against Greenland on October 1st, 2013. Greenland does not have its own military as all of the military bases were located in Redland prior to 2008, and as a result, put up little resistance against Redland’s massive army. Redland claims it to be a civil war in an effort to avoid other nations from entering the conflict.

2008 Split

Situation Brief – Part 2

XXX

NATO has been monitoring the situation closely over the past month, particularly because a NATO ally, Orangeland, is located right in the middle of the conflict. Prior to the 2008 split Redland and Orangeland have gotten into 3 different wars since the 1960s. Redland does not recognize Orangeland as a country, and tensions were at a all time high as intelligence reported the build up of Redland’s army.

Orangeland feared that Redland would use this as an opportunity to try and capture the entire peninsula and recent actions appear to confirm those fears. On October 15th, Redland armor battalions landed on the Eastern beaches of Brownland and have started attacking military installations as they travel West to join up with their forces attacking the Southern half of Greenland. On November 1st, Orangeland spoke at the UN showing satellite images of Redland forces amassing on Orangeland’s Northern border.

It appears Redland will capture all of Greenland within the next 30 days, and Brownland not much longer thereafter. If Redland succeeds, their forces will completely surround the small country of Orangeland and it will only be a matter of time before they are invaded as well. As a result, NATO air forces are being called in to protect Orangeland and prevent an invasion.

Invasion

Page 5: “The Peninsula” OPERATION: LIGHTNING STRIKE

Situation Brief – Part 3

Protecting Greenland is currently not part of the mission, however, the situation may change if the UN or NATO determine that Redland is committing war crimes and allow NATO forces to intervene.

Blueland is an island to the south of the AOR peninsula with their own fears of a Redland invasion, and as a result they will allow NATO forces to operate out of their Fukuoka AFB. The 1st VFW is one of the first NATO air wings to arrive and will be working closely with the Truman Carrier Air Wing to establish a no fly zone over Orangeland and Blueland, as well as protect NATO supplies and forces entering the theater.

AO Update – Enemy Troop Movements

The Peninsula as of

10NOV2013

The Redland Navy has continued to escort supply ships south to the southern ports of the former Greenland, including all the way around the peninsula to the eastern shores of Brownland

Orangeland’s Central Security Administration (CSA – their intelligence services) are reporting large groupings of Redland armor and artillery near their Northern border, with more en route from the West. Their spies say Redland’s army plans to surround Orangeland and attack from all sides, including the sea and air, as soon as they get a foot hold from inside Greenland.

Brownland, which has a small air force, has chosen not to enter the fight. NATO intel reports show they may even be allying with Redland as not a single Brownland fighter has taken off since they were invaded.

Greenland has almost no military and has resorted to insurgent tactics. NATO special forces units are currently in Greenland training the insurgents.

High Level Strategy

The Peninsula as of

10NOV2013

Step 2 - Disrupt and destroy enemy shipping routes through naval and air blockades. Redland’s army is stretched thin and cannot sustain a war on the southern front without a steady flow of supplies. Step 1 – Clear the area

near NATO Command and destroy airfields within 150 miles of the Truman.

Step 3 – Destroy bridges and routes in Greenland to prevent additional forces from entering and cut off existing forces from their Command.

Step 4 – Clear a 50 mile land demilitarized zone surrounding Orangeland and continue to enforce the No Fly Zone

Step 5 – Cut off the leadership from their forces by targeting key Command & Control Centers and senior military leadership

Order of Battle – Redland ADA

The Redland Air Defense Network is compromised primarily of Russian hardware: SA-2 SA-3 SA-4 SA-5 SA-6 SA-10 SA-11Most of their long range SAMs are far north, however they do have one SA-10 they shipped to the south into Kunsan. In the south most of the SAMs are mobile SA-4, SA-6, and SA-11, with a few SA-2s and SA-3s. Closer to the front lines bordering Greenland and Orange and the majority of SAMs are aging SA-2s and SA-3s with a lot of hidden mobile SAMs, especially the lethal SA-11.

SAM Assessment SAM locations are based on latest satellite images or intelligence reports. Detailed review of threats should still be completed during flight briefing.

SA-10 at Kunsan is a critical target that has to go down on Day 1

SA-10 near capitol will be a factor, but mission planners can decide if it needs to go down.

Pair of SA-2s on the Southern Brownland islands are critical targets that will be targeted on the first strike of the operation due to their proximity to Fukuoka.

Mobile SA-6/SA-4 and SA-2s will play a factor in enforcing No Fly Zone and may need to be disabled.

Mobile SA-11s could pose a threat to aircraft enforcing the shipping blockade.

NATO FORCES

Orangeland has a dense formidable AD Network. Consequently, over flight of Orangeland is not permitted unless clearance is provided by MC to avoid a blue-on-blue situation.

CVN-75 Truman Carrier Group

The Truman has SAM support and can be used as a Customs House.

There are some Patriot, HAWK, NIKE, and AAA battalions within Blueland.

//TOP SECRET//0600 / 10NOV2013 / PAVING THE WAY:

Redland forces captured the Southern Brownland islands on October 15th and have been building up air defense and reconnaissance forces every since on the islands. This is a violation of the International Waters Agreement Act of 1982, which states no country can create new military installations on islands more than 100 miles from the mainland of that country. Since Brownland did not have any military installations on this island, NATO, with support from the UN, has been approved to strike all military targets on the islands.

Following your strikes on the islands and the air defenses being destroyed, special operations units will approach the island via the USS Los Angeles Nuclear submarine and take control of the islands. Also, NATO air assets will be tasked with enforcing a no shipping zone from the 127 th line east. The Truman will handle any ships attempting to approach from the East, the 1st VFW will prevent ships from entering from the West.

This will be the opening salvo in Operation: Lighting Strike, so ROE needs to be followed to the letter and losses or mistakes are unacceptable. //TOP SECRET//

• At 0630 EA-6B Prowlers from the Truman will be on station providing ECM support blocking the SA-2 FANSONG B radars on the two larger islands. The Prowlers have two Super Hornets providing HAVCAP, however they are not permitted to leave the Prowlers at any time and will not be available for support should you get into a bind.

• At the same time, you will join up with two F/A-18C flights at the push point. ECM will be up and you will press to target at 0635. Both SA-2 SAM sites must go down by 0635 so the Hornets can complete their TASMO mission. Once you have disabled the SAM sites, proceed to STPT6 and search for the two cargo ships approaching the western island.

M0 – Land & Air Threats

SA2AAA

SACHON AFB: NATO AWACS aircraft and satellites have not identified any activity with the 1027th J-11 Flanker squadron. Intel teams believe those aircraft are meant to be a deterrent for NATO aircraft to strike the islands but not risked by flying CAP missions with limited maintenance supplies. However, the F-5 squadron has been flying CAP missions daily North of the islands.

POHANG AFB: A-4 and MiG-19 squadrons have been flying ground support missions over Brownland and since the invasion on the eastern front. There is a small probability that they will use those aircraft for CAP missions near the islands.SA2

Page 23: “The Peninsula” OPERATION: LIGHTNING STRIKE

M0 – Rules of Engagement

DO NOT FLY NORTH OF THE ISLANDS.

The Hornets will be North of the islands doing their TASMO mission but will not cross the KOREA ADIZ line. Intel suggests the ADIZ line is the limit of the ground radar at SACHON and if any incoming aircraft are picked up, it will trigger a large scramble. Stay south of the north side of the islands.

//TOP SECRET//0600 / 10NOV2013 / PAVING THE WAY:

COMMAND ROE:Clearance to Engage: Air-to-Surface• Avenger Flight Lead has final weapons release authority and does not need prior clearance to engage.

Clearance to Engage: Air-to-Air• Prior to engagements, all aircraft must be ID’d either by AWACS, with a specific airframe call back, or visually

through your TGP or eyes.• A declare call ball of “HOSTILE” is not enough to engage. It must be a fighter or attack aircraft that

poses a threat to the package, and therefore the declare must include the ID of aircraft or VID is required.

• There is still heavy civilian aircraft traffic near and approaching Brownland, and therefore no non-fighter/attack aircraft are permitted to be engaged.

• If fired upon, you may return fire immediately. Hard spikes to do permit clearance to fire without a VID or AWACS declare confirming the aircraft type.

Mission Command• Avenger11 will be Mission Commander (MC) and will approve any deviations from the briefed plan.

Departure/Approach• Tune to UHF 15 for Fukuoka Ground and switch to UHF 6 for Tower during departure or approach• ALL departures must follow the documented templates provided for Fukuoka – NO EXCEPTIONS• Inclement weather, <1 mile visibility, or a cloud base below 3,000ft AGL require the Toyota ILS approach.

//TOP SECRET//0745 / 10NOV2013 / CUBAN CIGAR

As the 1st VFW is returning from the opening air strikes on the Southern Brownland islands, a second group of fighters from the 294th will depart from Fukuoka to establish a No Fly zone and enforce the shipping blockade on the 127th blockade line. The F-16s will first head to the Alpha kill box, with the TASMO flights searching for Redland cargo or tanker ships, and the Escort flights searching for any Non-NATO aircraft entering the airspace. Once the Alpha kill box is clear, the package will continue to the Bravo kill box searching for additional ships or aircraft.

The Truman Air Wings will be enforcing the Eastern blockade in kill boxes Charlie and Delta. A KC-10 will be deployed near the southern sections of Alpha and Bravo. Expect to air refuel before transitioning from Alpha to Bravo. Only one flight is permitted to join with the KC-10, and while any flight in the package is air refueling, the other flights must be dedicated HAVCAPs (no flights are permitted to continue their TASMO mission while air refueling operations are underway.

Redland military forces will be scrambling as they get reports of the prior strike on their military installations on the islands. This will be the first real run in with Redland pilots. Be on special alert for the J-11 Flankers out of XXXX. //TOP SECRET//
