Four different individuals have earned Academic All-America recognition on eight occasions for the Brown and Orange.

Kyle Royer was selected to the ISAA adidas Scholar-Athlete All-American squad three straight years (1988-89-90). Goalkeeper Greg Murphy was both an ISAA Adidas Scholar-Athlete All-America selection as well as a GTE/CoSIDA Fall-Winter At-Large Academic All-American for the 1991 season.

Joe Burch was named to the GTE/CoSIDA Fall-Winter At-Large Academic All-America squad third team in 1995 and fi rst team in 1996. Burch was also selected to the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete All-American Honorable Mention squad following the 1995 season.

Back Dave Dyminski was the fi rst Falcon booter to receive All-America recognition for play on the fi eld. He was named to the NSCAA All-America Honorable Mention squad in 1972 and moved up to the second team in 1973. Midfielder Bud Lewis increased BG’s streak to three consecutive years with his honorable mention All-America accolades in 1974. Forward Dennis Mepham received honorable mention status in 1979.

Midfi elder Neil Ridgway was a two-time First-Team All-American selection in 1982 and 1983. Back Jon Felton was named to the third team in 1987, while forward Rob Martella earned fi rst team recognition following the 1992 campaign.

Midfielder Steve Klein became the third Falcon player to receive fi rst team accolades with his selection in 1996. Goalkeeper Scott Vallow was named to the NSCAA All-America Third-Team in both 1997 and 1998.

Bowling Green men’s soccer fi rst head coach Mickey Cochrane was inducted into the NSCAA Hall of Fame in 1995. Both Cochrane (1964) and his protege, Gary Palmisano (1996), received an NSCAA Letter of Commendation, with Cochrane also selected as the winner of the 1978 NSCAA Honor Award.of the 1978 NSCAA Honor Award.

BGSU’s most recent All-Americans were Ty Fowler and Chris Doré. Fowler graduated with a 3.93 gpa in psychology and was selected to the 1999 GTE/CoSIDA Fall-Winter At-Large Acacdemic All-American First Team. Doré fi nished his career sixth in points, eighth in goals and ninth in assists and was named to NCAA All-American Third Team.

RHINOS CAREER: 2007:Recipient of the Rhinos’ 2007 Connors and Ferris Comeback Player of the Year award...named to the USL-1 Team of the Week for Weeks One & 17...recorded consecutive shutouts on Aug. 10 & 12...returned to Rhinos lineup on Aug. 10 after missing 20 games with a right elbow injury...underwent surgery on May 8... suffered a right elbow injury on Apr. 18 making a save in practice. 2006:Named to the USL-1 Team of the Week for Weeks Three, Six, 16, 20 & 21...logged his career-high 10th shutout in 1-0 win over Atlanta on Aug. 5...named to the 2006 USL-1 All-Star Team...recorded his seventh shutout in nine games in scoreless tie on Jun. 9 at Virginia Beach. 2005:Was named to the USL-1 Team of the Week for Week 12. 2002:Joined the Rhinos for the year after spending the preseason with the New England Revolution and appeared in eight games...combined for his only shutout of the season with Pat Onstad on Jul. 24 against Charlotte... 2001:Finished the season with a 10-6-2 record while recording six shutouts and a 0.97 GAA...led the Rhinos to their second consecutive A-League Championship. 2000:Signed with the Rhinos as a free agent in Feb....posted an A-League leading 0.83 GAA and a 12-6-1 record in 19 regular season games with the team...led the Rhinos to the A-League Championship...named A-League Goalkeeper of the Year...named to the All-A-League First Team.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER CAREER:2004:Spent season with the Colorado Rapids. 2003:Made MLS debut on Apr. 26 against D.C. United when he made a career-best seven saves in a 1-1 draw...appeared in and started a total of four matches for the Rapids...tallied a 1.66 goals against average and made 14 saves while allowing seven goals in four matches. 2002:Spent time with the New England Revolution prior to the start of the A-League season...joined the Rhinos for the season...was signed by Dallas Burn after the MLS All-Star Break through the end of the 2002 season. 1999:Spent part of the season with Dallas, but did not see any action...assigned to the club as a Project-40 allocation on Aug. 11.

The 2007 season marked Pepe Aragon’s 10th year as head coach for the Herkimer County Community College men’s soccer program. Aragon has led the Generals to 10 consecutive Region III championships, three National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championships and three second place and three third place national fi nishes. As a Falcon, Aragon was a two-time All-MAC pick. His squad also made a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

SOCCER ALUMNIIn addition to playing professional soccer, Scott Vallow also serves as an assistant coach on the Niagara University women’s soccer staff. Last season he helped the Purple Eagles to a 10-7-2 overall record; fi ve of those games results in shutouts by the keeping corps. Bud Lewis begins his 33rd season at the helm of one of the nation’s most successful and respected programs at Wilmington College. With 426 career victories, Lewis is the seventh-winningest coach in NCAA Division III history, and only the 18th coach among all NCAA soccer coaches to reach the 400-victory plateau.A perennial top-20 team, Lewis’ Quakers have captured 11 conference championships and made 10 national tournament appearances, including a berth in the NAIA Final Four in 1986. Lewis, a former All-American at BGSU in the mid-1970’s, also serves as the Director Greek Life & Wellness.

COCHRANE SOCCER STADIUM

One of the many resources available to the Falcon men’s soccer team is the ability to play on one of the Midwest’s fi nest fi elds.

Mickey Cochrane Field, known nationally as one of the country’s outstanding soccer facilities, has become even better over the last few years thanks in part to a three-phase project designed to enhance the current complex.

The most recent upgrade to the fi eld was the construction of permanent seats on the west side of the main playing area. The stadium renovation project, fi nanced entirely with private funds, was offi cially dedicated on Sept. 10, 1995, prior to the men’s soccer home opener. A spacious press box was fi nished a month later. With the addition of portable bleachers from the old grandstand, the complex can seat up to 1,500 spectators.

Phase I of the plan, which was finished in 1993, consisted of the main playing fi eld being completely enclosed with fencing, landscaped with shrubbery, and decorated with signage. New fl ag staffs and team benches were also added over the course of the season.

Phase II began in 1994 with the installation of a new scoreboard and additional signage.

The entire Cochrane Field Project calls for the addition of more permanent seating to the west side and the installation of lights for night contests

in the coming years (phase III).

The field renovation project was originally conceived in 1988 by former Falcon men’s head coach Gary Palmisano who passed away in December, 1994. Under his guidance, hard work, and patience, his vision became a reality with the initiation of Phase I.

“Gary wanted the Falcons to have the finest soccer facility available, one that would make each game an event to be enjoyed not only by the players, but also by all those who support BG soccer,” said Jean-Marie Wolf Palmisano, wife of the late Gary Palmisano. “He envisioned a stadium to enclose Cochrane Field, a stadium to celebrate the great game of soccer.”

Cochrane Field, dedicated Oct. 11, 1980, in honor of BGSU’s first men’s varsity soccer coach, has been the home of the Falcon men since 1966 and has also been the site of the United States Youth Soccer Association’s Olympic Development Program Region II camps over the

past decade-plus. The fi eld has also served as the home of the Ohio-North ODP Camp.

The Falcons defi nitely have an ideal situation for their players to improve their skills with the use of two full-size fi elds and a small-sided training practice area. The soccer programs also utilize the Field House and its 90-yard indoor turf room and 200-meter track wing for winter conditioning.

The brand-new Sebo Athletic Center, located in the north end zone of Doyt L. Perry Stadium, provides all BGSU student-athletes, including the soccer teams, a place to reach their potential. The new building features an expanded sports medicine and rehabilitation facility as well as a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning area for student-athletes in all 18 varsity sports.
