Editor’s Notes Hello Chapter Members and Friends, Riding “season” is in full swing. We have a lot of events and rides on our calendar. The chapter officers would like to hear from our members about rides they want. Our Assistant Director put together an AWESOME survey for you to voice your wants and needs. Hopefully you had a chance to respond. This is also the first issue that someone’s HOG number has been listed somewhere in the HOGwash. If you’re the lucky one to find your number you need to print of the page where it is located or mention it at the monthly meeting. You must at-tend the meeting in order to claim your prize. Good hunting and hope to see the lucky person at the June meeting.

I look forward to seeing a massive Yavapai Chapter representation at the Rally!

Our Road Warrior program is continuing to evolve, and the points are mounting! With a goal of 1500

points to earn your patch, there are already eight members that are well beyond the halfway point of

getting there! Remember, to earn points, all you have to do is participate in chapter activities…just make

sure your getting your name on the sign-in sheets, and you’ll get the points. Contact me if you’d like to

learn more about it or if you’d like to know where you stand with points.

Let’s ride and have fun!

For those members that would like to be-

come a Road Captain, you will have to wait un-

til I move so I can find the packet guidelines

and then we can find the time to get togeth-

er and go over them to get you started on be-

ing a Road Captain.

Thanks

In recent news it was reported that motorcycle accidents are up 10% over last year.

You have to be a defensive rider to be safe.

An article in Sound Rider. By David Hough.

Six secrets to riding at night

Once in a while you choose to ride a night. Maybe you’re still a few hundred miles short of

your destination when the sun sets, or you want to make a night-time transit to get to a rally in

the next state tomorrow morning. Obviously, the big problem is not being to see what’s hap-

pening. It’s important to keep your lights working correctly to be prepared. And it won’t hurt

to have extra reflectors and lights on the back of the bike, and large reflective panels on your

riding gear. It’s important to stay hydrated, and insulated from the colder night air.

1. Use clear eye protection to maximize your low-light vision. If you normally use a tinted

face shield in the daytime, carry a clear shield with you, so that you can switch for night

riding. If your face shield has an anti-fog insert, remove it, to avoid extraneous reflec-

tions. Clean your eye protection at every rest break, using warm, soapy water, to re-

move bug splatter without scratching the surface. If your face shield is scratched, it

would be wise to replace it before riding at night.

2. Take frequent rest breaks to help stay alert. Your brain is programmed to fall asleep

when it gets dark. If you start to nod off while riding, take a break as soon as possible

for a short “power nap”. A cup of coffee is fine, but drink the coffee just before your

nap, to help you wake up. Continued on page 7

Page 7: The Official publication of the - Yavapai HOGyavapaihog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/June_2016... · The Official publication of the Yavapai AZ H.O.G. Chapter 1271 May, 2016 Volume15,

Continued from page 6 7

If a rest area appears safe, lie down on a picnic ta- ble

wearing your full gear, and nap for 15 or 20 minutes. Endurance riders often

take a snooze sitting in the saddle with bike on the center stand (the “iron butt

motel”). If a short nap doesn’t refresh you, that’s a clue you should scrub the

ride, find lodging and get a good night’s sleep.

3. Learn to shift your focus from an oncoming vehicle to the white fog line at the

right edge of the road. If you focus on the lights of the oncoming vehicle, the

chemical change in your central vision will leave you blind for several seconds af-

ter the vehicle passes. Focused on the fog line, you will still be able to see the

situation in your peripheral vision, and when you refocus your central vision on

the road your eyes will be adjusted for the darkness.

4. Separate yourself from commercial trucks. It’s very difficult for a truck driver

to keep track of a motorcycle in the mirrors. Change speed as necessary to

avoid riding alongside or immediately behind a truck. If a truck passes you, drop

back to give the driver room to pull back into line. Avoid riding in the center of

the lane, to avoid oil and fuel dribbles and loose debris. Be aware that truck tire

treads (“rubble alligators”) are known to separate and fly off into traffic. A

steel-belted truck tread can do serious damage and injury.

5. Watch for drunk drivers between 11pm and 2am, especially on weekends. Your

risks double during those hours. If your travel plans allow, avoid riding through

big cities at night. Separate yourself from any vehicle that is wandering in the

lane or changing speed erratically. And never, ever consider drinking alcoholic

beverage yourself before or during a ride. Alcohol degrades judgment, vision

and hearing. About half of motorcycle fatalities are linked to alcohol.

6. Be aware of the situation, to avoid confrontations with crooks, weirdoes and fun-

sters. Never allow another vehicle to pace you. While you are pulling into a gas

station, rest area, or café parking lot, scrutinize the people and vehicles

already there.

Dawg Run Highlights

Last months Dawg Run was to Ted’s Hot Dogs down in Tempe. With six riders voting Ted’s scored an 4.4 on the weenie scale taking second to Portillo’s. We also incorporated in the ride a BUG RUN in which Logan was the winner. Our next Dawg Run will be to Senior BoB’s in Sedona on Sunday June 12th. Meeting at the dealership at 10:30 with KSU at 11:00. I have a new way to get there that I know you will like. We can have another BUG RUN if you wish. See you there and RIDE SAFE!
