Wth a new semeste just un-

deway a chance fo students to

polsh up on the leadeshp sklls

s avalable. NSU has an actvestudent actvty boad, whch en-

    couages students to get nvolved

on campus. To stat the yea off

ght NSU s puttng on a Leade-

shp Boot Camp to gude leades

    wth and wthout expeence.

    Leadeshp Boot Camp s a

    new pogam wth two dffeent

    optons fo leadeshp develop-

    ment, sad Kathleen Kennedy

    decto of campus nvolvement.

    Thee s new leadeshp po-

gam and an expeenced leade-shp pogam fo ndvduals who

    have patcpated n leadeshp

    oles befoe.

    The Boot Camps tmng was

    no concdent; NAB stategcally

    planned the pogam to take

place at the begnnng of the new

    semeste. Wth the abundance of

    new students now callng NSU

    home Kennedy beleves that by

    offeng leadeshp pogams and

oppotuntes ealy on n the yea

t wll help students thnk aboutthe pesonal development as

well as the development on cam-

    pus. NAB has sponsoed many

    othe leadeshp pogams n the

    past but Leadeshp Boot Camp

    has cetan leanng outcome that

sets t apat fom the othes.

    Leanng outcomes fo ths

    pogam ae that students would

    thnk about mpovng them-

    selves, sad Kennedy. We ae

    takng the holstc appoach be-

cause all ndvduals ae leades ndffeent pats of the lfe.

    NAB povdes students wth

    leadeshp all though the school

    yea. To Pocto, Tahlequah se-

no, took a tp to Coloado ths

    summe, sponsoed by NAB, that

    povded students n a leadeshp

ole on campus to patcpate n

    the tp.

The tp seemed lke a geat

    oppotunty fo the rooke Bdge

Camp colo goup leades, as well

as the dectos to lean moeabout leadeshp whle makng

    new fendshps wth people out-

    These days people ae lookng

fo ways to keep moe money n

the pocket athe than n the

gas tank. When t comes to thequeston of hgh gas pces, com-

pessed natual gas may be the

    answe.

As to the mpotance of CNG,

i can say that t s vey lkely to

play a majo pat n the countys

    enegy futue, sad Jason Nchols

    Mayo of Tahlequah. Natual

    gas s domestcally and locally

    abundant.

    CNG emts nealy 90 pecent

    less polluton than gasolne and

desel fuels and can cut fuel costs

by about 50 pecent, accodng to

    cngnow.com

On Aug. 18 the cty of

    Tahlequah opened the st

    CNG llng staton. Wth many

mpotant ndvduals pesentCongessman John Sullvan sad

t was a geat day fo the cty, the

    state and the county.

    The pont of convetng to

CNG s to save money and that

    s exactly what Tahlequah plans

    to do.

    Ths CNG staton wll actu-

ally povde many benets to the

    communty, sad Nchols. Fst,

as the cty, the unvesty, and oth-

    e oganatons n town tans-

ton to usng CNG vehcles, t wll

lead to cost savngs and moe ef-

cent use of tax dollas. Second,

thee ae also majo economc de-

    velopment benets n that com-

panes who mght be nteested n

locatng n Tahlequah wll have aelatvely nexpensve fuel souce

    eadly avalable.

    D. Matn Tadlock, NSU in-

    tem Pesdent, s chaman of

    Notheast Oklahoma Publc Fa-

    cltes Authoty. Wth such close

tes to NOPFA t would only be

natual fo NSU to have a plan

    petanng to CNG.

The tp was a geat oppo-

tunty to meet people that have

    leadeshp oles on campus that

i do not necessaly have contact

    wth, sad Pocto. it allowed

the colo goup leades and dec-

tos to have some much needed

    bondng tme.

Pocto sad that as a decto

team they wanted the colo goup

leades to have a bette unde-

standng of goals, whch they had

set fo camp. We had the tme

n Coloado to eally go n depth

wth them, as fa as the goals fothe camp, sad Pocto.

    NAB pdes themselves on all

    the oganatons they offe to

    students.

NSU offes a lot of leadeshp

oppotuntes as well as classes on

    leadeshp, sad Pocto. Most

    of these oganatons ae student

    lead, theefoe the students have

moe oom to gow and matue

    as a leade.

As a peson who has taken full

    advantage of the leadeshp that

NSU has to offe Pocto offes

some advce fo new and cuent

    unvesty students.

The advse i gve to new and

cuent students would be to tyeveythng, attend events, attend

    meetngs, voluntee fo anythng

    and eveythng, un fo ofces,

get nvolved n some way. sad

Pocto. Once you have a taste

of what all thee s to do nd out

what you love and devote moe

i have found that behnd evey

    CNG. Tm Foutch, Vce Pesdent

of Opeatons at NSU, s lookng

at busses that un on CNG that

    could povde a shuttle sevce

    fom Tahlequah to the Boken

    Aow and Muskogee campuses

    fo faculty, staff and students.

    Thee s cuently a pendng

natual gas act that, f passed,

    would ncease ncentves to natu-

al gas vehcles. Whch would begood news to Oklahoma, whch s

the thd lagest natual gas po-

    ducng state accodng to ea.gov.

    Oklahoma eseves make a

    majo contbuton to the naton-

continued from page 1 al eseve total that s expected tolast fo 120 yeas at cuent us-

age, sad Nchols. it s elatvely

    nexpensve as compaed to gaso-

lne and desel fuel, t buns clean-

e, and, n many ways, s safe to

    use than those fuels.

    CNG sounds deamy but not

eveybody needs to ush out and

get a CNG conveted vehcle, at

least not ght away. CNG com-

patble vehcles cost a lttle moe

because the technology s newand llng statons ae had to

nd beng housed by only nne

    states.

    rght now, CNG vehcles

    have lmted ange compaed to

    gas fueled vehcles. Compessed

natual gas vehcles ae pefect fo

shote tps, but mght pove n-

    convenent on longe jouneys,

sad Nchols. Also, untl thee ae

    moe publcly avalable fuelng lo-

    catons, thee aent many places

to fuel up a vehcle unnng CNG.

    But, as technology mpoves and

the nfastuctue s put n place,

CNG has a vey good chance of

beng the fuel that s buned n a

lage poton of vehcles that aeon Amecan oads n the nea

    futue.

    in 2010 the U.S. spent $24.6

    bllon on mpoted ol, accodng

    to cngnow.com. Whch s equva-

    lent to 364,000 new teaches,

    fundng fo hghway epas fo

    nealy 7 yeas, o buldng 32.407

    new elementay schools.

    Because t s a domestcally

    souced fuel, we could avod

    payng foegn countes to sup-

ply ou ol needs, Nchols sad.

Ths would allow us to keep jobs

and dollas at home and, most

    mpotantly, keep money out of

the hands of people who mght

pass t on to those who mght uset to fund teost actvtes.

fear into convenience store workers and owners.

The tem that s sweepng the

    Classes have aleady begun fo

a degee plan, thee stll mght be

openngs that can be found. Some of those classes aval-

    able ae wokshop and weekend

    couses. These couses ae just

lke egula week classes, but they

ae held on a Fday o Satuday

and even on both days dependng

on the class. A lst of these openclasses can be found on the NSU

    webste unde Schedules and

Open Classes. They ae not clas-

sed n the own lst but they can

be easly found just by lookng at

    the begnnng and end dates.

Most of them only last one o two

    days.

if money s an ssue, do not

let the cost of these classes be

dscouagng. Weekend classesdo not cost moe. Accodng to

    Lndsey Hembee, student suc-

cess specalst fo FYE, a student

s chaged fo a class by the cedt

hou. Snce these classes ae only

one o two cedt hous, they ae

    not as expensve. Speced cedt

hous fo a class can be found by

lookng at the last dgt of that

    couse numbe.

These classes ae avalable foall NSU campuses as well. Each

campus has ts own updated lst.

    Thee ae classes avalable n

    many depatments such as Eng-

    lsh, theate, at, communca-

    tons and even physcal educaton

along wth many othes. Thee s

a wde ange of classes too. Fo

    example, some of these avalable

    ae puppety, development of

    ealy chldhood, and even self-

    defense fo women.

    Even though the negatve as-

pect s the fact that the student

wll have to gve up a weekend,

    thee ae postve outcomes to

    these couses as well.

    Most students lke that they

can go n the class and stthough a lectue. Most of the

tme thee aent any tests ethe,

    sad Hembee. The classes ae

usually pass o fal. if a student

goes to class and patcpates, they

    usually pass.

    Some have found that weekend

    classes ae actually qute conve-

nent too. A student can eceve

one o two cedt hous just by go-

ng to class fo a weekend o evenjust a nght.

    Smalle classes can make t

bette n a class they feel moe

can even help them become moe

    nvolved because they lean about

    new thngs fom new people.

    Fo anyone nteested n en-

n the lowe level of the CASE

    The Northeastern

NSU soccer teams look to leadership for upcoming seasonsJasmiNe wrightTNE WriTEr

NSU fans keep a lookout fo

    the mens and womens socce

    team ths upcomng season. New

    ecuts, ncludng some Dvson i

playes, and a new coachng staff

fo the mens team have bought

a new atttude about the game.

Ths s pobably the most tal-

ented team weve eve had n

the hstoy of ou pogam, sad Chase Wooten, head coach

    of the NSU womens socce

    team. ive got some condence

that ths s a petty salty goup.

    The NSU womens socce team

fell shot last yea nshng just

one spot out of the confeence

    tounament. Oveall they n-

shed 7-6-5. They ae lookng to

tun up the heat ths new season.

Ou bg pctue goal s that

we would lke to get n to thatlage bd to the natonal tou-

    nament, sad Coach Wooten.

Talent wse ts thee, ts just

now a matte can we put t all

togethe and play at that level.

The womens socce team has a

lot of depth ths yea wth theuppe classmen. They have seven

senos and two of them ae cap-

tans. Wth the amount of leade-

shp on the team ths season, they

have the potental to go vey fa.

My pesonal goal fo ths sea-

son s to do whateve i can do

to help the team move fowad,

    sad Melssa Mchelsen, seno

and captan of the NSU wom-

ens socce team. Beng a se-no, ths s my last yea, we only

have 18 games n egula season

play, and fo me that s too shot.

i have been playng ths game

    compettvely snce i was 6-yeas-

old and i want to pogess to

postseason play so i can extend

my last yea of compettve soc-

ce caee as long as t can go.

    The NSU mens socce po-

gam s lookng to tun thngs

aound as well. The seach fowns n the past seasons has been

    a constant stuggle, but ths s a

new yea and a tme fo change.

i would lke ou guys to play

    consstent, team oented defense

and be vey quck and agges-

sve n tanston to attack, sadrob Clonka, head coach of the

    NSU mens socce team. That

s ou geneal goal, we ae look-

ng fo a wnnng season. NSU

[mens socce] hasnt had a wn-

    nng season snce about 2004,

so we ae lookng to beak that

    and get double dgts wns.

    Mens socce nshed the sea-

    son oveall 7-10-0. They have

fou senos ths yea and alage feshman class. The team

s countng on those fou se-

nos to play the best and lead

    them n the ght decton.

i thnk we ae gong to do

    good ths yea, dentely wn

    moe games than last yea,

    sad Mchael Wlson, seno

and captan of the NSU mens

    socce team. [We ae] push-

ng fo a egonal ttle and look-

ng fo natonals but we have toevaluate ouselves as a team.

The NSU mens socce team wll

    have the home opene Fday,

Sept. 9 vesus Fot Hayes. Not only

wll t be the home opene but

they ae celebatng the 30th ann-

vesay of the pogam beng the

st state nsttuton to hold mens

socce as a vasty spot. They wll

also be dedcatng the eld to D.

Dan DeLoache, the ognal coachwth a new achway to the eld.

They have lots of celebatng to

do Sept. 9 so make sue NSU fans

ae thee to help make t pefect.

    The NSU womens socce team

wll have the home opene Sept.

    10 aganst Centenay (La.). Coach

Wooten was the pevous coach at

Centenay so he s lookng to un

the scoe up on them just a bt.

They wll need fan suppot ths

game to stat the yea off ght.
