HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT?“The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

~ Vince Lombardi

I ‘ve met many Agents throughout the years with numerous gifts, talents, and capabilities to offer. Some have had fantastic people skills; others have displayed an ability to lead; while others just seemed to have that certain something that made sales come easily to them. But regardless of any ingrained talent these individuals possessed, the longer I worked in this industry, the more I witnessed that these talents alone didn’t matter … at all. Alone, these talents might have made certain aspects of the job a little easier, but without dedication, without drive, and without time, effort, and hard work, talent falls flat. I noticed early on those who found success – myself included – were the ones who busted their butts to accomplish their goals. The ones who were willing to go the extra

mile that seemed too difficult for their peers to trek were the ones who ended up at the top of their Agencies, and once they got there, knew their efforts had been worth it.

A good and timely example of the rewards of hard work is being broadcast every weekend this fall. As another season of football is upon us, I hope while we cheer on our chosen teams we’re reminded of the devotion and hard work of players on the field. Whether you’re a fan of the college or professional level, these athletes represent the best of the best in their sport, and it took more than a good arm to get them where they are.

You owe it to yourself to make your goals a reality, especially when LNL’s Opportunity of a Lifetime is ready and waiting for you to push yourself toward a better, brighter future.

Among these athletes are those with incredible stories of beating the odds to achieve their dreams through their own hard work and dedication. I’m sure many of you are familiar with the story of NFL offensive tackle Michael Oher (whose life story has been depicted on the big screen). Oher’s childhood was comprised of a drug-addicted mother, an absentee father, and numerous stretches of homelessness … but with the help of a generous family and, more importantly, his strong will to succeed, he overcame his troubled past by working hard on the football field and with a private tutor to find success. Oher’s devotion to making a better life for himself paid off, as he went on to play football for the University of Mississippi and then for the Baltimore Ravens and now the Tennessee Titans1.

Going from homelessness to the NFL doesn’t just happen. Oher didn’t find a golden ticket or win the lottery. He made it happen. He made certain he would attain amazing success by working tirelessly toward his goals. And I’m guessing the promise of a better life than one of poverty and hardship was a big motivation to get him there.

So ask yourself, what motivates you? For many of the football stars we watch every week, I’m sure the glory of the game and victory on the field drives them, but we can use similar motivators to excel in our own careers. Qualifying for Convention, being featured in Torch, or gaining the respect of your Agency is some of the glory and victory one finds at LNL. And beyond that – working hard to make a better life for your family, buying a home, sending your children to a good school – there are so many reasons to excel in your career that any reason to take it easy pales in comparison. You owe it to yourself to make your goals a reality, especially when LNL’s Opportunity of a Lifetime is ready and waiting for you to push yourself toward a better, brighter future.

Finding success in your career and your life doesn’t come easily, but it’s absolutely worth the journey, even if parts of it may seem perilous. So make sure you keep your reason for success in mind (whether it’s for your family, your future, or just a dream of a better life) – it will motivate you to press on, even if taking the easy road becomes the appealing option. I know you have the capability, so make sure you have the will.

It’s first and goal … what’s your strategy?

Roger SmithPresident and Chief Executive Officer

IT’S FOURTH AND GOAL!

HOW BAD Do You Want It?Football season is upon us! Athletes have

prepared all off season to accomplish

one goal. The sport relates so much to

our business, as it’s a challenge of X’s and

O’s (playbook), yards and inches (activity

model), blocking and tackling (facing

obstacles), and scoring (AP).

Whether you’re in the worksite or

individual market, your success depends

on the amount of knowledge you possess

and your understanding of systems that

can take your career and income to the

next level. The applied activity knowledge

comes from the proper execution of your

training and repetitive application. You

can become a master of the systems and

a more effective player on the field.

As a coach in a leadership role, the

continued success of your team is directly

tied to your application of systems and

adherence to the playbooks. Playbooks

help you train your top level recruits

effectively to make an immediate impact

on your team.

Football is a game of yards and inches.

Every team knows the objective is to

move the ball down the field, putting

teammates in the best possible position

to score. There’s a definitive number

directly tied to each objective as the ball

advances. At Liberty National, our yards

and inches are measured by the activity

model. Whether you work in the worksite

or individual market, your activity model

is measured by the number of walk and

talks, to presentations or appointments

needed to reach your Wildly Important

Number (WIN) from your Minimum

Realistic Optimistic number (MRO).

There’s a fine line between winning and

losing. Ask any coach or athlete, and

they’ll tell you football isn’t just about

talent. Talent can only take you so far. It’s

not about how well you understand the

plays. It’s not just about preparation. It’s

about how badly you want it. How badly

do you want to succeed? When the will to

win becomes stronger than obstacles in

front of you, failure will not overcome you.

In our business, we face obstacles and

encounter roadblocks, but we strengthen

ourselves by setting strong goals that are

stated with no alternatives in mind. Make

certain your goals are clearly defined

and measurable. Consider that some

goals may require help from others to

accomplish. Solicit help from the right

coaches who can encourage you and

help you accomplish what you want.

No doubt, scoring (AP) is the fun part of

our business! It’s fun to put points up on

the board, and do it often. Give yourself

a target each and every week so you’ll

light up the scoreboard! Hold inner office

challenges, or challenge your best week,

month, quarter, or year.

As we enter the fourth quarter of 2014,

now is the time to push forward. Set your

sights on finishing strong and taking your

momentum into 2015. We’ll raise our

glasses and celebrate a championship

banner year. Remember proper execution

of plays along with maximum effort

and a desire to win creates victories.

Victories create champions. Champions

become legends.

It’s fourth and goal. How bad do you

want it?

Steve DiChiaroExecutive Vice President and Chief Agency Officer

HOW COMMITTED ARE YOU? Remember when you were a teenager and there was something you desperately wanted? Maybe it was a new sound system for your car, or a TV or computer for your bedroom. You were probably willing to do anything and everything you could to earn money to buy it. The stakes are different for you today, but the idea of working hard to get what you want is the same.

You’ve heard the expression, “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” (except at Leadership Academy). It’s true, at least for most of us. If you want something, you have to work for it and do what is required to get it. That often means moving outside your comfort zone. But getting outside your comfort zone is generally what you must do to get to the next level of success. Agency Owners like Tim Aderholt, Ricky Beard, and Sellors-Sellors didn’t become top producers overnight. They had to learn the processes, make a few mistakes along the way, and meet the same challenges that all successful Agency Owners meet. Doing what it takes to get what you want is not always easy. Anything worth doing and anything worth having generally comes with some sacrifices along the way. But the sense of personal and professional satisfaction you feel makes everything you do worthwhile.

Are you committed? Are you willing to do what it takes to become the best you can be … whether that’s Agent, Supervising Agent, Agency Director, or Agency Owner? If you’re content being an Agent for your entire career, determine to be the best Agent on the planet! But if you have the desire to move up the career ladder, then don’t let anything stop you. Determine right now you will become the very best of whatever you choose to be. And share your goals with others; they can help you to get there, and, in the process, fulfill their own goals.

How do you become the best you can be? Proper training is obviously important. You must know our products to help your customers make the right selections. You must learn Liberty’s systems and practices. You must prospect to create adequate sales opportunities. But the single, most important characteristic of a successful individual — in any industry — is attitude. If you want to create success, you have to think success! It doesn’t matter where you come from. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a college degree. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have previous sales experience. The only thing that truly matters is that you have the right attitude. If you’re willing to work hard and are trainable, YOU WILL SUCCEED!!

When you truly believe in yourself, everything else can fall into place. How do you achieve the right attitude? BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! Believe you are the best insurance Agent at Liberty National. Believe in your abilities to create the kind of life you want and deserve and be willing to put in the time and effort to achieve it. When you truly believe in yourself, everything else falls into place.

You have the Opportunity of a Lifetime to become the best you can be for yourself, your family, and for Liberty National. You can have it all! So what are you waiting for?
