Why do we need a Navy?

Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, our first Prime Minister, had rightly said, "To be

Secure on Land, we must be Supreme at Sea". This famous quote

always remind us that we are primarily a Maritime Nation. A strong Navy is

an important element of every maritime nation.

• India has a coastline about 7500 km and an Exclusive Economic Zone

(EEZ) of over 2 million sq. kms. In addition, we are endowed with

abundant oceanic wealth comprising a large number of island

territories and vast sea bed area, over 97% of our national trade is

carried by sea routes ! We must protect our natural wealth and keep

our trade routes open in order to progress and prosper. It's therefore,

imperative that India maintains a strong Navy which is always in a

high state of preparedness.

• In times of distress and natural disaster such as floods, droughts,

cyclones, earthquakes etc. the Navy is always called upon for rescue

and relief operations. Little wonder then, the Indian Navy is so relevant

to us all ! And that also explains why the public hold a great deal of

affections for the Navy & its sailors.

• Of all the diverse elements that go into the making of a strong and

effective Navy, no single factor is as important as its men. For the

Navy to be world class, it requires top-rate men. And you could just be

the one the Navy is looking for. Putting it simply, the nation needs the

Navy and the Navy needs the best of yo.

INDIAN NAVY

All extra - ordinary jobs.

What do Sailors do?

• In good old days, a sailor only sailed; the job involved tying of knots,

swabbing the decks and polishing the brass. But today's sailor can be

specialist operator, firing guided missiles and homing torpedoes, a

sonar technician sounding ocean depths from a hi-tech submarine, a

data processing technician at a modern supply centre, a boiler

technician overseeing the operation of the ship's power plant or a

member of an aviation crew soaring high above the clouds. Today,

Navy's adventure is not only on the sea but also in the skies above and

the depth below. And for this reason, the Indian Navy has been called

the "three dimensional service".

• The Navy has a wide variety of skilled personnel, specially trained for

their respective jobs. These skills could be valuable in many walks of

life too. The work is divided among different terms that do different

kinds of jobs. It could be operations of various equipment such as

radars, sonars or communications or firing of weapons such as

missiles, guns or rockets. Not to mentions cooks, stewards, medical

assistants and the people who work with weapons or maintain the

aircrafts and other machinery. In short, the sailors literally run the

Navy.

It' different.

How is Naval Life?

• It's a way of life. Apart from work, life in the Navy is full of travel,

adventure, variety, education and good friendship right from the very

start. And you can add to that a lot of good times too ! Sport is very

important - it keeps you physically & mentally fit and is good for your

morale. In fact, most activities in the Navy is based on team work and

every one is an important part of the team. It is this system which

keeps the ship battle worthy and fighting fit.

• It's unique responsibility. When you join the Indian Navy, you

become part of a highly technical organisation. As a sailor, you could

serve in powerful, modern ships of various classes such as Aircraft

Carriers, Guided Missile Destroyers and Frigates, Replenishment

Ships and highly technical and fascination Submarines.

INDIAN NAVY

It's the ultimate challenge

Life at Sea

• Life at Sea - a far cry from duty ashore. For one thing, while at sea,

you'll be putting all your skills and determination to the actual test.

You'll be given all the responsibility you can handle and will be doing

an important job for which you have been uniquely trained.

• Of course, sea duty does not mean you will spend all your time at sea.

Your ship will have its own 'home-port' and you will spend quite a bit

of your time in or close to that port. And when you do head out to sea,

you will find excitement in visiting far flung places in India and abroad

which you had only read or heard about. To put it in few words, "Life

at sea is full of Challenges and immense Satisfaction". While you

are at sea, the Navy looks after the welfare of your family like its

own.

The Indian Navy is a well balanced and cohesive three dimensional force, capable of operating above, on and under the surface of

the oceans effectively safeguarding our national interests.

The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) exercises operational and administrative control of the Indian Navy from Integrated Headquarters

of MOD (Navy), New Delhi. He is assisted by the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) and three other Principal Staff Officers, namely,

the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS), the Chief of Personnel (COP) and the Chief of Material (COM).

The Navy has the following three commands, each under the control of a Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief :-

a). The Wester Naval Command (Headquarters at Mumbai)

b). The Easter Naval Command (Headquarters at Visakhapatnam)

c). The Southern Naval Command (Headquarters at Kochi)

The Western and the Eastern Naval Commands are operational commands and exercise control over operations in the Arabian Sea

and the Bay of Bengal respectively. The Southern Command is designed as the Training Command.

The cutting edge of the Indian Navy are its two fleets, namely the Western Fleet based at Mumbai and the Eastern Fleet based at

Visakhapatnam. Besides the fleets, there is a flotilla based at Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Port Blair (A & N Islands) that provides

Local Naval Defence in the respective region. Naval ships are also based at other ports along the east and west coasts of India and

the island territories thus ensuring continued naval presence in the areas of national interest. Further, there are various Naval

Officers-in-Charge (NOIC), under each command, responsible for the Local Naval Defence of ports under their respective

jurisdictions.

The defence of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is a joint responsibility of all the three services and is coordinated by the

Headquarters, Andaman & Nicobar Command, located at Port Blair. This is the only unified Command in our defence forces and is

headed by a Commander-in-Chief, as appointment on rotation among three services. The Local Naval Defence of the Lakshadweep

group of islands is the responsibility of the Naval Officer-in-Charge, Lakshadweep.

The Flag Officer Naval Aviation (FONA) based at Goa is responsible overseeing all matters pertaining to aviation while the Flag

Officer Submarines (FOSM), who is also the Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Submarines) based at Integrated Headquarters of

MOD (Navy), New Delhi is responsible for overseeing all the submarine related issues.

For repair and maintenance of ships and submarines, the Indian Navy has two major Naval dockyards located at Mumbai and

Visakhapatnam. Besides these, smaller Naval Ship Repair Yards function at Kochi and Port Blair. Major aircraft repair and

maintenance organisations exist at Kochi and Goa.

Logistics support is provided by a well established, network of Weapon Equipment Depots (WEDs), Naval

Armament Depots (NADs) and Naval Store Depots (NSDs) located at various places. All base support

facilities are largely manned by civilian personnel.

Base Depot ship INS Kadamba, commissioned on 31 May 05 is located at Karwar. The

commissioning of this base marks the successful culmination of the first phase of developing a

state-of-the-art Naval Base for the Indian Navy. The base is capable of berthing, sustain and

maintain a substantial part of our blue water maritime forces on the Western seaboard.

Of all the diverse elements that go into the making of an effective Navy, no single factor is as

important as its Men and Women. It is for this reason that training in the service assumes a

special significance. The Southern Naval Command headquarter at Kochi is the Navy's training

command. There are currently 33 training establishments spread over the length and breadth

of the country.
