We have some famous historical examples of this problem to keep us on our toes! Five years ago, adoption of the internet was not pervasiveenough to have justified this technique. Today it is. Clearly there are masters rowers who do not have access to the inter-net, but this percentage is now very low for those countries with strong masters rowing participation (England, Germany, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia). We are confident that the data presented here are representative for masters rowers in general. One masters group that may be under-respresented here is Eastern Europe, due to language barriers and lower internet access.

Sample Characteristics1021 responses70% males, 30% femalesMales = 47+11 years (range =27-83)Females = 43+ 9 years (range =27-68)

Geographic distribution of sample

Diagram2

0.4

1.1

46.1

31.3

20.1

1.1

Percentt

Diagram1

0.4

1.1

46.1

31.3

20.1

1.1

Percent of Sample

Demo&History

Gender

MaleFemale

7030

Where do you live?

AfricaAsiaEuropeNorth AmericaOceaniaSouth America

0.41.146.131.320.11.1

Types of competitions participated in

FISA RegattaOther International Comps.National Mast.Local/Reg. racesTour/distance eventsCoastal racesSprintsIndoor Comps.

462563.3862763641

Nat/international competitions

MalesFemales

7073

Age

MalesFemales

Mean47.443.1

SD10.79.3

Past Performance Level in Rowing

Int. finalistNational MedalistNational top 10Regional FinalsitLocal MedalistLocal CompetitorMasters Only

Males1324.817.112.59.5814.7

Females10.514.59.97.99.26.941.1

Is Rowing Your Primary Sport?

Yes, only RowingYes, but also othersNo, primarily other sports

Males62.632.74.8

Females59.735.74.6

What other sports have you competed in?

Team SportsRunningCyclingSwimmingXC skiingKayakNone

Males594319219317.2

Females494016276.6425.3

Regional Differences in Rowing Performance History

MALES

Int.
