Sci-fi boldly goesto be left on MarsVeteran director RidleyScott’s latest offering,The Martian, is a spacemovie that feelsgenuinely plausible and isstill a good time. Jess Laytoffers her take on thefilm.
Out of this world:Matt Damon is thelead actor in TheMartian.
SPACE movies are popular becausethey capture the imagination andoffer an answer to the great ques-
tion – what is out there? In The Martian, it’s not about what’s
out there, but who’s out there – MarkWatney.
Watney, played by the consistently bril-liant Matt Damon, is stranded alone onMars after flying debris during a stormon the planet separates him from histeam of fellow astronauts and he isbelieved dead.
But Watney is not one to sit aroundwallowing in his sorrow.
The botanist, ever the optimist, logs hisdaily movements in the surviving NASAbase on the red planet, where he plantspotatoes and creates his own watersupply.
He is, quite simply, a scientific geniusdetermined to make sure what littlesupplies he has left will last until thenext NASA mission to Mars can retrievehim in four years’ time.
The Martian is not just a man-alonemovie though, and NASA’s movementson Earth are equally as interesting asWatney’s own.
Jeff Daniels plays the head of NASAwith a concerned gravitas, determinednot to tell Watney’s crew mates, currentlyon their way back to Earth following the
mission on Mars, thattheir colleague is alive.
Sean Bean is incharge of the astro-nauts’ welfare, and isless concerned with the
publicity problems of leaving a man onMars than getting him back to Earth.
Kristen Wigg is the media adviser forthe space agency, and though she doesprovide comic relief, she is unexpectedlynot the driving comedy force – Watney is.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Donald ‘‘ChildishGambino’’ Glover and Mackenzie Davis
add to the Earth-bound cast, whileJessica Chastain, Kate Mara, SebastianStan, Michael Pena and Askel Hennieround out Watney’s crew mates.
While The Martian is, literally, out ofthis world, its characters keep it firmlygrounded.
It is far from the typical science-fictionfilm, and is exceptionally different fromRidley Scott’s previous space effortsAlien and Prometheus.
It is a survival story that isn’t at alldepressing, but uplifting.
The Martian is filmed in an African
desert and audiences won’t fail tobelieve that Watney is on Mars.
As fantastic and enjoyable as Damonis, the real scene-stealer is DonaldGlover.
As caffeine-driven astrophysicist RichPurnell, Glover all but steals the moviedespite the tininess of his role.
The Martian is a strong, fun, good-time, stylish film that even sci-fi avoidersshould enjoy.
The Martian is in Hoyts cinemas nowand is rated M.
