Jess Layt offers her take on the film. Out of this world: Matt Damon is the lead actor in The Martian. S PACE movies are popular because they capture the imagination and offer an answer to the great ques- tion – what is out there? In The Martian, it’s not about what’s out there, but who’s out there – Mark Watney. Watney, played by the consistently bril- liant Matt Damon, is stranded alone on Mars after flying debris during a storm on the planet separates him from his team of fellow astronauts and he is believed dead. But Watney is not one to sit around wallowing in his sorrow. The botanist, ever the optimist, logs his daily movements in the surviving NASA base on the red planet, where he plants potatoes and creates his own water supply. He is, quite simply, a scientific genius determined to make sure what little supplies he has left will last until the next NASA mission to Mars can retrieve him in four years’ time. The Martian is not just a man-alone movie though, and NASA’s movements on Earth are equally as interesting as Watney’s own. Jeff Daniels plays the head of NASA with a concerned gravitas, determined not to tell Watney’s crew mates, currently on their way back to Earth following the mission on Mars, that their colleague is alive. Sean Bean is in charge of the astro- nauts’ welfare, and is less concerned with the publicity problems of leaving a man on Mars than getting him back to Earth. Kristen Wigg is the media adviser for the space agency, and though she does provide comic relief, she is unexpectedly not the driving comedy force – Watney is. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Donald ‘‘Childish Gambino’’ Glover and Mackenzie Davis add to the Earth-bound cast, while Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Michael Pena and Askel Hennie round out Watney’s crew mates. While The Martian is, literally, out of this world, its characters keep it firmly grounded. It is far from the typical science-fiction film, and is exceptionally different from Ridley Scott’s previous space efforts Alien and Prometheus. It is a survival story that isn’t at all depressing, but uplifting. The Martian is filmed in an African desert and audiences won’t fail to believe that Watney is on Mars. As fantastic and enjoyable as Damon is, the real scene-stealer is Donald Glover. As caffeine-driven astrophysicist Rich Purnell, Glover all but steals the movie despite the tininess of his role. The Martian is a strong, fun, good- time, stylish film that even sci-fi avoiders should enjoy. The Martian is in Hoyts cinemas now and is rated M.
