LENT PRAYER
THEME: Bear Fruit Worthy of Repentance
Weekdays @ 7:30 P.M
Saturdays @ 6:00 P.M
Beginning of Lent…………………. February 11
Palm Sunday……………………….. March 25
Good Friday………………………... March 30
Easter……………………………… April 1
From the desk of the Vicar
Dearly beloved in Christ Jesus,
The Great Lent (Valiya Nombu) starts with Pethurtha (Feb
11) which is a feast, on seven Sundays before Easter. Till 40th
Friday we observe the 40 days fast of Jesus in the wilderness.
After the 40th Friday, we join Jesus on His road to the cross,
and then at His glorious resurrection at Easter.
As we are preparing to observe Lent, let us read and meditate
Isaiah 58: 1-12. Here Yahweh calls the Prophet to address the
problem of religious observance. The root problem is people
who observe spiritual discipline for selfish reasons (to gain
God’s blessings) while ignoring the needy people.
1. God’s people ask “why do our prayers go unanswered?”(V: 1-3a)
2. God exposes the shallow worship of His people (V 3a- 5) 3. The Kind of worship and fasting most acceptable to God.( V 6, 7)
4. The blessings God promises for the true worshipper (V 8-11)
If God’s people couple their fasting (Nombu) with lives of
righteousness and love, then they would see their prayers an-
swered. They will have a life full of light, full of healing, full of
righteousness, full of glory to the Lord. I request all my parish-
ioners to observe the Great Lent and attend Lent prayer meet-
ings. This year our theme for Lenten season is “Bear Fruit Wor-
thy of Repentance” Hope our Lenten worship is a season for
personal and corporate spiritual renewal.
Let us uphold 123rd Maramon Convention in our prayers as it
begins on Feb 11.
Let me appreciate all the office bearers and committee mem-
bers of our parish and all the organizations for their valuable
contributions and dedication in all the activities of 2017. May
God bless and guide all our members to work for the expansion
of His Kingdom.
In service to Christ and His Church

THE MAR THOMA CHURCH STATEN ISLAND
Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night. (Psalms 1:1-2)
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be ac-
ceptable to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. (Psalms 19:14)
Meditation is more than just reading with the eyes. The word
meditation in the Bible means reading with “intention.” It is con-
cerned with personal application. When we meditate on God’s
word, we assimilate it and make it a part of our own life.
Even in the Old Testament, we see that God is concerned with
our thoughts. Being a Christian is more than just doing and saying
the right thing. It is also thinking the right things. God holds us
accountable for our thoughts and wants them to be in accordance
with His will.
Mahatma Gandhi said:
Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your
words,
Your words become your actions, Your actions become your hab-
its,
Your habits become your values, Your values become your des-
tiny.
If we truly believe in God, then we need to make our thoughts
be in accordance with His thoughts. Then our words, actions, hab-
its, and values will also become in accordance to God’s will. This
will enable us to have the destiny that God intends for us. A des-
tiny where we have fellowship with God in this world and in the
world to come.
