SUMMER TIME IN INDIAIt tends to make people to be very short tempered and

stress. This setting is used to show how the major character

deals with the weather in this novel.In this story, We can see how Priya adapted herself to

the weather in India which was very hot compared to in US.

- Evidence: pg 12“ I was sweating as if I had never been through an Indian Summers before….I was having trouble acclimating to my homeland.”Priya (pg. 8)This shows how Priya, the major character is adapting

herself to the weather in India.

SILICON VALLEY,UNITED STATESThis setting is used to shows the

characteristics of the major character.In this setting, Priya studied and worked there

in Silicon Valley.Evidence : “…by coming to the United States

to do a master’s in Computer Science at Texas A&M, by conveniently finding a job in Silicon Valley..” (prologue)

This extract shows the characteristics of the major character, Priya is a very independent and educated person to work and study in foreign country alone. So, this setting explains the background of the major character, Priya.

MONDA MARKETThis is the center of attention of the people in

Hyderabad to buy their groceries.This setting is used to show the true

characteristics of the major character in the beginning of the story.

In this setting, we can see that Ma was very fussy to choose the mango that she liked.

Evidence : “Ma ignored the mangoes he chose and pull out one at random from the basket” (pg 11)

The extract shows that Ma is very choosy at picking the best mango and this truly shows the characteristics of Ma.

KITCHENAlmost all the arguments and nagging

took place in the kitchen.This setting is used to show women’s

expression of their feelings and emotions.In this setting, we can see that Priya tells

about her boyfriend to Sowmya at the kitchen.

-Evidence : “ I have a boyfriend… a fiancé, I blurted out.”(pg 11o)

The extract shows that Priya confessed her feelings and the truth of her relationship with Nick in the kitchen. Hence, kitchen is an important setting to show the development of the major character’s feelings and emotions.

DINING ROOMA neutral place for everyone to talk.All the wedding plan talks took place in the

dining hall.- “everyone was very excited for the remainder of the dinner, making wedding plans and discussing how everything would have to be done fast-fast” (pg 154) All the important event took place in

dining table.-Anand stand up for Neelima at the dining table while eating.-Priya confess about her engagement at the dining table.

DINING ROOMThis setting is used to show the conflict of the

major characters.In this setting, we can see that the conflict

that Priya had which was confessing about her engagement at the dining table.

- Evidence: “ I love Nick. I’m going to marry him.”(pg 182)

The extract shows how Priya, the major character deals with the conflict in this setting. Hence, this setting plays an important role to show the conflict of the major character.
