Deciding on the structure of the cell, a great wayto look into it could be using the revolves used

in video games heads up displays, character

selections and/or character loadout screens. These

layouts would provide an easy way observe and take

in data on the equipment and stats of an object or

    character.

This is a still from a promotional video for a

game called Planetside 2. Having explored olddesign interfaces of games such as Final

Fantasy, Super Smash Bros Kingdome Hearts,

Pokemon and the like, this proved to be the

most helpful and inspiring towards my goal.

    Right are some early

    layout designs. After

    the first image that I

    realized this was going

to be a tough job and I

    really needed to look at

    the subject matter

graphical layout and howI was going to display a

    eukaryotic cell in the

    space of a Character

Loadout screen. The second image was a

sketch of a suddenthought at how to

    suspend the cell in the

    space.

I found myself settled with geometric shapesin a 3D space when it came to layout design.

Here I experimented with other colour

possibilities, albeit a little bold to start

    with.

Settling on the idea that the final piece may

be a shade of blue I set about looking for

typefaces suiting the geometric background. Acommon feature with most loadout menus seems

to be a techy typeface, sometimes degraded

in quality, holographic, square and angular.

Here are a few of my tests.

I worked further on the layout designs using some

interesting geometric strips created in photoshop

to add a flare to the edges of the screens. Then

added in some reworked text box designs of asimilar theme. This resulted in the layout below

    Here are someconcept art work

    for the cells

    organelles,

    above are the

    designs for the

    Mitochondria.

    After completing

    the pitch I

    received a lot of

    constructive

    feedback. My

    animatic at that

    stage was a long

    regurgitation of

    facts, which is

    exactly what

    sends students tosleep. The

    turning point in

    my production

    came when a tutor

    suggested I

    turned the idea

    into an app. This

    is the idea I

    took forward to

    this storyboard.

    As can be seen in

    the storyboard, I

    kept the loadout

    inspired layout I

    had originallywanted and

    modified things

    slightly so as to

    behave more like

    a programme a

consumer was incontrol of.To imitate a

    consumer/user I

    have utilized

    white halos to

    track the finger

    movements. Thesemovements

    replicate some

    touch screen

    motions

    The result of

    turning this idea

    into an app is

    the idea of

    having complete

    control over your

    learning. As a student you

    can choose which

    organelle youwant to

    investigate first

    rather than wait

    for the video

    animation to get

    to that point and

    therefore learn

    what you need to

    when you need to.
