I was chatting with another mother about our little ones’ activities as school term was coming to an end. “But you’ll keep up some of her activities during the summer?” I was asked. I had to think about it, but not for long. There’s just so much to do and see in Tenerife that it would be a shame to waste the summer on scheduled ‘activities’. First off there’s the free and gratis natural offer of sea and sand, with beaches all over the islands, many of them blue flag strands. There are also public and pay-in pools from Puerto de la Cruz to Santa Cruz to many locations in South Tenerife, as well as top class water attractions such as Siam Park and Aqualand in South Tenerife. Take a day away from the beach and bring the kids to Loro Parque, Eagle Park or PuebloChico, or if you want a break from the sun altogether, Tenerife’s museums are worth a look. Picnics and barbecues – what better place to eat outdoors than the Canary Islands. There are a host of official barbecue spots all over the islands (though at certain times barbecues may be banned due to a high risk of forest fires), and lovely mountain spots that are ideal for a family picnic – but make sure you bring sun protection to the mountains as well. Those of us who live here sometimes take the fun side of the islands for granted and forget that there is so much to do and see when we allow ourselves the time. So be a tourist for a day or two, pretend you’ve just arrived for the very first time and rediscover just how delightful it can be here and what attracted us to the islands in the first place.

I editor‘s letter

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the Canary Islands are, for most of the time, a pretty good place to live.If you have spent more than a few years here and set up home, are working and raising a family, you tend to forget the pluses concentrating, as you do, on the day to day stuff, mortgages, keeping the fridge full, school runs...So now and then it makes sense to stop and smell the Canarian roses. There are very few places in the world that have the enviable climate we can pretty much rely upon here in the Canary Islands. Apart from the odd wet (ok, in recent times very wet!) day, most of the islands experience delightful climates, with a trip to the beach an all-year-around choice. The other thing that maybe we take for granted, or perhaps don’t allow ourselves to experience, is the richness of the diverse cultures around us. We live in a real salad bowl of nationalities, identities and backgrounds. Taking your child to school the likelihood is that there are parents from Spain, South America, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, England, Ireland, Belgium, Croatia, all chatting away in their differing levels of Spanish, exchanging news about their kids, who are and represent the next generation of Canarians. With just a smattering of Spanish we can delve into the rich cultural mix that we have here, and making friends with people we might never meet living our ‘old’ or other lives. It’s a huge plus, one we might not make the most of, but there to be exploited. If someone is asking about coming to live in the Canary Islands it’s hard to know what to advise – if you live here and made the move you often know instinctively who is going to make it and who won’t. But those who are almost guaranteed to get the most out of their time here are those who see the full picture and are willing to take the plunge and find out what the real Canaries, beyond the sea and sun, are all about.

during the 20th century – from simple domestic tasks to working the land and children’s games. Houses and patios open so that you can see how life really was for villagers of all ages, and so that you leave Chirche with a wonderful taste in your mouth, there are usually samples of traditional food in the plaza, which will make you want to return again and again.

Adeje Bargain FairThe IV Adeje Bargain Fair is taking place in the town on July 9th and 10th and if previous editions are anything to go by there will be no problem finding excellent prices for a huge selection of goods, clothes and shoes, toys and lots more besides. The two-day event will be on the Calles Palo Mayor and Las Jarcias, in El Galeón, Adeje, from 10am to 9pm on both days.

Fiestas del CarmenAlthough the fiestas in honour of la Virgen del Carmen, the patron of the fishermen, are celebrated in many parts of Tenerife, the best known location for this festival is Puerto de la Cruz. Each year in this holiday resort in the north

40, El MusicalThis musical consisting of Spanish pop music from the top 40 is returning to the Tenerife Auditorium Adán Martín in Santa Cruz from July 6th to 10th. 40, El Musical is based on the popular radio station, Los 40 Principales, and will use the same stage set as used in Barcelona with two former Operación

Triunfo contestants taking part: Naím Thomas from Tenerife and Gisela

from Cataluña. A wonderful show for popular music lovers. Tickets, priced at €30, €40 and €50 are available from the Auditorium box office or online at www.generaltickets,com/cajacanarias.

11th Traditions Day in ChircheOnce a year since the beginning of the 21st century, the charming olde-worlde village of Chirche in the district of Guía de Isora becomes a living museum for a day, and this year it all takes place on July 10th. The village residents, all dressed appropriately, celebrate this fiesta by faithfully recreating the customs and everyday activities of this rural area

of the island, the statue of the Virgin, together with that of San Telmo, are taken by the local people from their hermitages down to the small beach at the fishing port. This procession has become extremely popular as the residents share their excitement with holidaymakers. On arrival at the beach, and after the setting free of several doves, the fishermen take charge of the statues to place them on decorated fishing boats for a trip around the harbour, to the sound of much music and horns. The fiesta ends with a grand firework display before the statues are returned to the sanctity of their hermitage.

Santa Cruz celebrates Nelson battleBetween the 23rd and 25th July, Tenerife’s capital remembers one of the most significant battles of its history, against Admiral Horatio Nelson’s troops as they attacked the City. The spectacular recreation of this battle, which took place on July 25th 1797 creates lots of smoke and canonfire, both on land and at sea, and the fantastic costumes complete the picture, which attracts thousands of visitors to Santa Cruz.

The place to be for windsurfers and those who love watching this exhilarating sport is El Médano, between July 14th and 20th.

The PWA Windsurfing Championship is returning to Tenerife after 15 years with a new name and this year’s event will not only be a sporting one where you can see the best windsurfers in the world, but more of a festival with entertainment both night and day, lots of shops and brands participating, beach stands with

food and clothing, a party tent and lots more. There will also be a car exhibition and the highlight (and a big attraction) will be the raffle organised by the local businesses association in which you could win a Renault Clio Authentic.48 men and 16 women from all over the world will be competing, including several Canarians. Others are coming from Brazil, the US, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Ireland, Japan, Venezuela and more. One of the organisers of the event, Daniel Bruch, currently fifth in the PWA ranking,

is competing ‘at home’ and hoping to get the best result this year. Daniel would like to thank all the authorities for their generous support, and of course his own personal sponsors: Starboard, Severne, O’neill, OTC, Flying Objects, AL360, MB-Fins, and CINDE tenerife.com. El Médano is one of the best locations on the planet for windsurfing with strong winds and waves of up to four metres. It also has everything the visitor could possibly want: hotels, restaurants, bars, beautiful scenery and more.

There will be five tests for the waves classification. Also collaborating are Ashotel, Viajes Zipango, Fuente Alta, CocaCola, Multieducacional, Amarilla Golf and Island Connections. With the main sponsor now signed up, the event itself will now be called the ‘PWA World Cup-PlanetWin365 El Médano-Tenerife

2011’. PlanetWin365 is a significant online betting company with over 3,000 branches worldwide, and they have clearly placed their bets on the windsurfing industry!Everyone is invited to attend. It’s free, entertaining, fun for all the family, and it all happens at Playa de El Cabezo, El Médano with events for both men and women commencing at 10am every day. This will be a great promotion for all of Tenerife as the whole surfing world’s interest will be focused on the island during that week.Additionally, on the following weekend, from July 22nd to 24th there will be a National Waveriding Contest with even more entertainment in store and lots for everyone to do. Be there and be part of it!

Exhibition by José Arturo Martín and Javier Sicilia, both from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The pair has worked together since their first joint exhibition in 1995.Together they develop a series of themes in various fine art forms; traditional (paintings, drawings, photographs, etc), which use pictorial narrative as a reference point as well as diverting into theatrical representations, the language of the cinema, and other media. In this way the artists themselves become protagonists in their own works. Black Friday takes the twilight as its running theme explored

in many ways, using technology and masculinity as key paradigms of a value system for a world in crisis. The works

depict imminent catastrophe. More information, 922 849057 /www.teatenerife.es

What’s on Tenerife Island Authority Cultural and Leisure Activities JULY

Page 12: The Magazine 66

one of the many advantages of living on these beautiful islands is that we can exhibit our sandal collection pretty much year-round.

With this privilege comes the responsibility, however, to keep our feet in tip top condition: massaged, pedicured and painted so that they can be proudly shown off rather than hidden away – those lovely red wedges just don’t look the same with cracked heels and chipped nail polish (even if they are Prada). Feet are the unsung heroes of our bodies – often forgotten and frequently neglected, they carry us around, day in, day out, sometimes under truly distressing circumstances (think eight hours, 30 degree heat and 4 inch heels..) suffering unspeakable envy as they watch their upper body counterparts: hair, face and hands receive the TLC they not only crave but deserve the most. We wash, condition, cleanse and

moisturise to within an inch of our lives and our poor feet get nothing! Foot care is not complicated, and by following just a few golden rules and investing a small amount of time each day you’ll see and feel the benefits almost immediately.

n Wash your feet dailyn Dry your feet properly – moisture

leads to fungal infectionsn Cut your nails regularly – straight

across, never too shortn Exfoliate – removing dead skin cells

also stimulates circulation n Moisturise well. If your heels are

cracked or your feet very dry apply cream before going to bed and wear socks overnight

n Above all, choose your footwear carefully.

That was the name of the event which took place in los Cristianos over six days in early June. There were several aspects to the initiative, designed to increase trade for town centre businesses.

54 of these establishments were offering star products at discounted prices, a dozen bars, cafés and restaurants were offering a tapa and a drink for €3, and 33 fashion shops displayed their goods on the catwalk at the fashion shows, which took place over two evenings on the seafront promenade. This was the chance to see that high quality casual, sports or formal clothing, jewellery and accessories can be found without leaving Los Cristianos, for children and adults of all sizes and ages.

Madrid was the chosen city to inaugurate a tribute to the celebrated Spanish designer Cristóbal balenciaga, entitled Cristobál balenciaga: Creador Único. often referred to as the “Master of haute Couture” by today’s fashion elite, the exclusive event will travel around Spain, taking place in a total of 12 destinations – Tenerife and Gran Canaria among them.

The glamorous event acts as a magnet for a host of well-known faces in the worlds of entertainment and design, and includes a fashion show of some of the top designers within the Balenciaga brand today as well as a documentary on the personal life of the Master himself and a look at the lasting impact he has made in the world of fashion. Don’t miss the August issue for all the details from the event in Tenerife, which will be held at Magma, Costa Adeje.

The municipal and regional elections on May 22nd saw political upheavals in many parts of Spain and here in the Canary islands.

While electorates in some boroughs voted to return ruling parties with absolute majorities, such as in the case of Adeje, Guía de Isora and Arona, in other parts of the islands pacts were the order of the day. In many cases those pacts saw familiar faces return to positions of power. In Santiago del Teide for instance, and in the Tenerife Cabildo, where the very popular Ricardo Melchior of the Coalición Canarias has been re-elected as president, this time with the help of the PSOE socialist party.

The Centro hípico del Sur near buzanada in the district of Arona provides the perfect environment for horses and their riders, with staff who are totally in love with these beautiful animals.

On the weekend of June 11th and 12th, visiting riders and their horses came from afar, including the other Canary Islands, to take part in the Concurso Doma Clásica Nacional (national dressage contest) with events for teams and individuals, for infants, juveniles and adults. It was a particularly elegant event which benefitted from beautiful weather. Some of the winners are pictured here.

Additionally on June 12th, riders were competing for the 1st Janet Whitehouse Memorial Trophy.

A member of the British Horse Society, Jan, who passed away in February 2009, acted as a consultant trainer in dressage during her time in the Canaries and helped so many to achieve their goals. She trained some riders at Buzanada on a personal level, including Charlie Karlsen (Operación Triunfo) on the horse Opus 2000. Ken and Kate Matthews sponsored the cash prizes for the winners, and the trophy itself consists of the spurs which Jan wore as a rider for about 40 years. An independent outside jury chose Opus 2000 and his rider Paris as the winning combination out of 20 horses. Second came Paula on Jalouzie and third was Ailsa on Emiel. At an emotional presentation, Charlie Karlsen made a short speech and awarded the trophy and prizes to the winners.

The all-new range rover Evoque is the smallest, lightest, most fuel efficient range rover ever produced. The coupé and five-door models highlight the Evoque’s vast array of personalisation options.

A tempting array of colour and feature combinations are available, meaning that each car can match its customer’s own taste and lifestyle – from designer exterior packs, contrasting colours on the roof and spoilers and immaculately-trimmed designer interiors, to a host of desirable technologies to maximise comfort and enjoyment.

Uniquely in the compact SUV segment, Range Rover Evoque customers can specify a lavishly appointed cabin, with soft, premium leather and beautifully tailored, twin-needle stitching providing a luxurious finish to almost every surface of the instrument panel, doors and seats.Rather than using a traditional trim hierarchy, the Evoque gives customers the choice of three design themes: the cool and contemporary ‘Pure’, the luxurious ‘Prestige’, and the bold and sporting ‘Dynamic’. The options include 12 exterior colours, three contrasting roof colours, seven alloy wheel designs from 18-inch to 20-inch, 16 tailored designer

interiors, four metal finishers and two contemporary wood veneers, three interior headliner colours, illuminated aluminium and chrome tread plates, full-sized fixed panoramic glass roof and black or chrome roof rails. Complementing these is a vast range of comfort and convenience technologies to choose from, such as the sensational 825W Meridian surround sound system, the innovative Dual-View touchscreen display, TV, rear seat entertainment, an advanced Park Assist automated parking system and powered tailgate.Owners can also choose from a very broad selection of official Range Rover

accessories, which includes exterior and interior styling, together with a comprehensive choice of practical loading and towing items. Most of these were developed specially for the Evoque, from bright side protection sill tubes and sports pedals, to roof-mounted carrier systems and a full towing kit, including tow hitch mounted bicycle carriers. Carefully designed stowage areas under the load floor add extra capacity, while versatile luggage stowage systems are made possible with the addition of loadspace stowage rails. A strap with an Inertia locking reel, which works in a similar way to a seat belt, prevents

movement of items in the luggage area. The clever design of the interior adds further space and versatility to the luxurious cabin. Family users will find the car provides the flexibility and luggage space of a compact station wagon. The five-door offers 60/40 folding rear seat squabs which allows the luggage capacity to be expanded to 1,445 litres. A full-sized fixed glass panoramic roof enhances the sensation of space and comfort in both the coupé and five-door, providing a superb uninterrupted view for all occupants and flooding the interior with natural light. The Range Rover Evoque has been

designed to provide customers with a polished driving experience that combines dynamic and sporty handling with responsive, effortless performance and refinement. The car can be specified with the sophisticated Adaptive Dynamics system which uses advanced MagneRide™ dampers to provide a particularly good balance of confident, nimble handling and supple, controlled ride.As a true Range Rover, the Evoque delivers the all-weather, all-surface capability, which is a hallmark of Land Rover, enhanced by the latest version of the company’s signature Terrain

ResponseTM system.Off-road, drivers will be reassured to know that in addition to generous ground clearance, the car has a significantly better breakover angle, approach angle and departure angle than other premium compact SUVs.The Evoque will be the first Range Rover to offer customers a choice between the standard, full-time, intelligent, four-wheel-drive system, which delivers outstanding performance and traction on all surfaces, and a low-carbon, front-wheel-drive option for further enhanced fuel economy. With its compact footprint and advanced technologies, the Range Rover Evoque reinforces Land Rover’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The Evoque offers a smooth and responsive turbocharged powertrain line-up with the choice of state of the art diesel or petrol engines. The comprehensively updated 2.2-litre turbodiesel has 190PS

or 150PS derivatives. The front wheel drive coupé version combined with the 150PS 2.2-litre engine achieves CO2 emissions of less than 130g/km.The new 240PS, 2.0-litre Si4 petrol engine combines direct fuel injection, turbocharging and twin variable valve timing for exceptional driveability and fuel efficiency, delivering 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds.Lightweight construction techniques and the addition of a front-wheel drive variant ensure optimum efficiency is achieved. The diesel manual version comes with direct injection and stop start. The Evoque also adopts low CO2 systems such as Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) and is built to maximise end of life recyclability. The Range Rover Evoque is available with xenon headlamps. First to catch the eye is the powerful signature graphic in the front running lights, created by innovative LED light-blade technology.

A similar graphic is repeated in the LED rear lights, with their jewel-like 3D petal design. Approach the car at night and you will also see a bold Range Rover graphic alongside the front doors, illuminated by the ‘puddle lights’ which shine from the mirrors.More special touches greet you when you enter the car. The interior displays come to life with a choreographed animated start-up sequence, while the rotary auto shifter completes the ‘greeting’ as it rises silently into the driver’s hand. LED ambient lighting provides sophisticated and precise illumination within the cabin; select Dynamic mode, and a sporting red colour scheme fills the interior as well as the instrument dials and cluster display. The Evoque benefits from the same comprehensive selection of the latest technologies as the larger Range Rovers, in terms of controls, connectivity, comfort and convenience for all occupants. At the heart of the control system is Range Rover’s much-acclaimed, 8-inch, high-definition touch-screen display with its crisp graphics and simple, intuitive menu. The display is available with the innovative dual-view technology, so that driver and passenger can view completely independent content. The comprehensive package includes Bluetooth hands-free mobile phone use

and audio streaming, plus a range of USB and auxiliary inputs for iPods and other portable devices. The Evoque is the first Range Rover to offer breathtaking new sound systems developed in partnership with the high-end audio specialist Meridian. The premium Meridian offering is an 825W, 17-speaker system, which delivers the ultimate in surround-sound performance.Other features available to Evoque customers include Park Assist for automated parallel parking, Blind Spot Monitoring system, Surround Camera System with five digital cameras

including a reversing system, full dual-zone automatic climate control featuring a Park Heater timer facility, hard-drive navigation system, DAB/FM/AM/Sirius tuners, with hard-drive virtual 10xCD multiplayer, digital and satellite TV, and DVD playback, rear-seat entertainment package with 8-inch video screens, digital wireless headphones and touch-screen remote control, keyless entry system and powered tailgate, Adaptive headlamps with Automatic High Beam Assist, heated windscreen, front seats and steering wheel.Unlike any previous Range Rover, the

Evoque adopts a very dynamic profile with its dramatic exterior appearance. The design of the five-door was closely derived from the coupé model, and the two versions have identical overall length and width. To provide additional interior space, the angle of the rear roofline has been subtly revised, and the five-door is 30mm higher than the coupé. Sitting slightly lower than in one of the larger Range Rovers, the driver adopts a Sports Command Driving Position, offering a more sporting feel but retaining the important sensation of control and command.

The Evoque is dramatic and sporty on the outside, spacious and practical on the inside

After hearing several glowing reports on the food served in Taverna El Greco, it was with more than a little anticipation that i headed to the after-dark Mecca of Centro Comercial Safari in las Américas to check it out for myself.

Should the name El Greco leave any doubt as to the type of food offered, the whopping Greek flag on the wall inside makes it clear, and the Zorba-esque music seals the deal -minus the hourly break for the musical fountain extravaganza, a nice companion in itself to outdoor dining. The extensive menu has something to suit everyone, but stands out mainly for its simplicity. Good quality ingredients, packed with flavour, cooked simply but to perfection with an abundance of herbs and spices. Every plate that passed on its way to hungry customers was colourful, neatly presented and generously portioned. To start with you have a range of options, such as hummous with flat bread straight from the oven and stuffed vine leaves. But if

you’re uncertain what to go for and want to sample a range of Greek delicacies, opt for Pikilia El Greco (€9,95) – a selection of eight delicious dishes including tzatziki, hummous, marinated olives, beetroot, butter beans in tomato sauce, green-lipped mussels and a divine creamy feta spread with chilli. Watch the bread intake though, it is incredibly easy to wolf your way through two baskets almost without registering (especially as they bring a new one when they see you have none left) and suddenly find you are almost full. This would be a tragedy indeed, as the main courses are out of this world.Meat lovers are spoilt for choice: the quintessentially Greek kebab, Souvlaki, be it chicken, pork, beef or a mixture of all three, is a winner every time. You can also choose from prime cuts of steak, chicken or the traditional favourite, Mousaka. There are also plenty of fish dishes to choose from, the best of which just take the fresh fish of the day or tiger prawns and cook them to perfection on the barbecue. The Biftiki Gemisto (€12,95) is the hidden

gem of the whole menu. Its translation of beefburger doesn’t do it justice at all. Think less ‘slab of average meat in a bun with a slice of tomato’ and more ‘two-inch-thick burger of top-quality beef, bursting with herbs, served with a lip-smackingly thick provençale sauce and feta cheese oozing from its core’. Divine. There is a selection of salads available, but you can’t go wrong with the classic Horiatiki (€6,95) – peppers, red onion, olives, cucumber, tomato and the best feta you’re ever likely to eat (not too salty, not too crumbly), dressed to impress with olive oil, vinegar and fresh herbs. If you have room for dessert (and I take my

hat off if you do), there are a few house-prepared options that will not disappoint. Baklava, the tooth-achingly sweet filo pastry bites, covered with pistachios and other nuts and lashings of honey go down very nicely with an after-dinner coffee. Chocoholics needn’t worry, either – the warm brownie, served with vanilla ice cream is very tasty and surprisingly light. The service is warm, friendly and efficient, the atmosphere is spot on and the food first class. Prices for starters average around €6, mains around €13 and desserts around €4.Taverna El Greco is open daily from 5pm to 11pm. For reservations or further information call 922 793 227.

I profile

Speaking to Maria del Carmen bonfante about Ámate, the Tenerife association for women with breast cancer, is to speak to a woman fired with enthusiasm and 100 per cent convinced she is on the right track.

A breast cancer survivor herself, Mari Carmen is President of the association that she and a group of fellow patients formed some five years ago. “We were like a self help group, we used to get together in the café after our appointments and discuss everything that was needed and not at that time available, a social worker, psychiatrist, lymphatic drainage massage. There was only one psychologist for the whole hospital, there were no resources for women to help them get a wig if they didn’t have any money, there were no workshops and no physiotherapists available when your arm hurt. So we came up with the idea of the association as a long-term project.“We started with the psychologist, to be able to offer help to the patients and their families”, they were involved in the creation of books, for example, which help the parents explain to young children what is happening and help them to accept it. The next step was a social worker. Often women who are affected by breast cancer lose their jobs. If they are working in the service industry and they have to have lymph nodes removed, the resulting swelling means that it is just too painful to

move beds or carry trays. The financial results for the families can be crippling: “of the women who are in treatment for a year, nearly all end up out of work.” So the association organises training for them in other fields, help with curriculums and preparation for interviews.“There was a waiting list at the hospital of a minimum of two years for physiotherapy, and we had to do something about that, by whatever means. We managed that three years ago and now have two physios. When they remove your breast your body is left lopsided, which leads to problems with your back and shoulder as well as the swelling in the arm. Plus which the scar has to be drained to stop it accumulating fat.” The physio is now working with patients all over the island: in the south, in Icod de los Vinos, in La Orotava. Mari Carmen underlines the necessity of going to a properly trained physio for the lymphatic drainage. “This is not a beauty treatment, lymphatic drainage massage after breast cancer treatment is a specialised treatment that requires a two-year training course.”The team has recently also visited El Hierro to help patients there and is planning a trip to La Palma and La Gomera. Wherever they travel to, they need a local council or association to offer them premises for a couple of days and accommodation. Transport is already taken care of as the Fred Olsen ferry company

kindly gives them free tickets. As breast cancer survivors, the group members themselves have kept an eye on what is needed and the association has grown bit by bit. For women who can’t afford prostheses or wigs, they can get them from Ámate. To keep the patients mentally and physically fit, they offer various workshops and keep fit classes, such as Pilates, belly dancing, finger pressure acupuncture, Reiki, Bach flower remedies, excursions, dance therapy and laughter therapy. Courses available now include computer studies and handicrafts with recycled items. More information is available on their blog at http://amatetenerife.blogspot.com/ in Spanish, but they do have volunteers of various nationalities and can attend to patients in many languages. All events staged to raise money get support from the volunteers at Ámate, but perhaps Mari Carmen’s favourite is the fashion catwalk they organise, in lingerie, swimwear and evening dress. To see women who could have been psychologically destroyed by this disease strutting their stuff, kissing friends and family and waving to the crowd as they display the clothes is a joy. “It’s a message of hope to say that you can live after this and that you can look gorgeous... This year we had a woman who was treated six years ago and she was seven months pregnant. On the catwalk with her big belly. It’s like the great triumph over

cancer,” alive and enjoying it and bringing a new life. They’ve come a long way from those seven friends who met in the café, nowadays there are approximately 350 associates who pay the €36 annual fee, and a group of volunteers who come in for specific events. But there is still a lot to do. They would like a permanent place for physio instead of sharing space with another association and constantly asking for permission for the room. Ideally they’d like staffed premises in Santa Cruz, Los Cristianos or Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz and accommodation near the hospitals for those who have to travel a long distance for chemo. “We’ll get there, we’ve grown a lot” Mari Carmen states optimistically. Long-term aims? To have a recovery centre for women who have just finished chemo, like the one in Extremadura, with all their treatments and support available. El Médano is being investigated as a possible site for the centre, but it would take a lot more cash than they have available at the moment. “We continue to move forward with a lot of energy and have many dreams and objectives to fulfill, but I’m very happy, we’ve done a lot and come a long way.”Any and all fund-raising activities are very welcome, from all sectors of the public,

especially now that many of the big supporters, administrators, banks etc. are cutting back on their charity contributions. Ámate have various items made up for sale to raise funds from t-shirts and car stickers to bracelets and also sell the special scarves which give 100 per cent protection from the sun. Golf events, charity lunches, sponsored walks, sponsored slims, sponsored no-uniform days, tapas and wine tastings, catwalk fashion shows and the Walk for Life have all played their part in raising cash in the past. See what you can organise in your own community, your help is needed more than ever.

Many fund-raising activities are organised throughout the year which help Ámate to fulfil current and long-term projects

Aperol, one of Europe’s most popular summer drinks, was the subject of a very successful tasting session and demonstration at the Spanish Style head office in los olivos, Adeje.

Some of the most significant guests from the food and beverage industry enjoyed Aperol and Aperol Spritz. They all loved it! Aperol is the perfect aperitif. Bright orange in colour, it has a unique taste, thanks to a secret recipe, which has never been changed, with infusions of selected ingredients including bitter and sweet oranges and many other herbs and roots in perfect proportions. Aperol’s strength is in its low-alcohol content of only 11 per cent.

A glance at the Canarian state flag is enough to show the importance of the Dogo Canario in the islands.

Modern in zoo-technical aspects, the Dogo Canario, formally known as the Presa Canario is ancient in its form and origin. The first reference to these animals is in the papers of the Tenerife island council from 1516, shortly after the Spanish conquest. There are numerous references to these canines in the 16th and 17th centuries in official paperwork, mainly referring to their work as guardians and cow herders, which leads one to believe they were strong, robust, but at the same time agile. It’s undoubtedly the prototype of the Presa Español introduced by the conquerors and derived from the Dogo de Burgos, the Perro de Toro de Salamanca and the Alanos. At the end of the 17th century and into the beginning of the 18th century, the English began to settle in the Canaries, mainly in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, for commercial reasons. They brought with them their culture, customs and their dogs, amongst which the most outstanding were the Mastiff, the Bulldog and the Bull Terrier – at that time all fighting dogs. It was a period

when dog fighting was at its peak in popularity in the UK and they introduced the ‘sport’ into the Canaries. So much so that breeders here began to cross the Presa Español and the Bardino or Pastor Majorero with the more temperamental English breeds, resulting in a dog that was perfectly capable of guarding, herding cows and fighting.

This was the golden age of the Presa Canario until the middle of the 20th century when in 1936, at the end of the Civil War, dog fighting was abolished. Over the years breeding was reduced to such an extent that they almost became extinct, but interest was revived in the 70s, and breeding started again, mainly from small breeding groups in Tenerife and Gran

Canaria. In 1987 the Spanish commission for dog breeds gathered data to publish the official racial pattern of the breed which was standardised and approved in 1989. In 2001, the breed was accepted by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), an international federation of kennel clubs, but in exchange they lost their

name and became known as the Dogo Canario. The Magazine would like to thank Tierra de Volcanes for the information and photographs supplied for this article. Tierra de Volcanes have been breeding, watching, teaching, and enjoying this magnificent breed for over two decades.

lovingly restored from its original 200-year-old shell, this fabulous Canarian-style house is nestled in a secluded area of Arona town, a quaint rural village approximately 10 kilometres from los Cristianos and is a sanctuary from the hurly-burly pace of life on the coast. if it’s character and originality you’re looking for, then this property has it in spades!

The current owners bought the house in a derelict state and have done an outstanding job in transforming it into the splendid property it is today. Their extensive experience as interior designers has influenced the finishing touches, adding a unique perspective to the property. Wherever possible, however, in an effort to be faithful to the character of the building, original materials have been used and features retained. The entrance is via a pretty, cobbled courtyard; perfect for lounging in a hammock with your favourite read by day and spacious enough for outdoor dining or entertaining on balmy evenings. The accommodation comprises four bedrooms andur bedrooms and two bathrooms, with the living area split across two levels – perfect if you are looking for a separate bolt hole for the ‘in-laws’ or independent teenagers. The owners have successfully combined a sense of the traditional with the modern conveniencesences of day to day living. On the ground floor you will

which has a full size bath as well as a separate shower. A splendid staircase leads to the first floor, and what many consider to be this property’s most impressive feature; a stunning galleried living area, with views down to the ground floor. This is a magnificent room that really does need to be seen to be appreciated. Also on the first floor are three further double bedrooms, a large bathroom and a well-proportioned second kitchen, leading out to a small terrace with views down to the coast. Adjacent to the property is a small outhouse,

complete with running water and electricity. This offers great possibilities for conversion into a further living area, guest bedroom, playroom, office etc. A rare property with a sense that time has stood still within its walls, offering a haven of peace and tranquillity on the doorstep of Los Cristianos. becky brewerton fired a four under par 68 in the strokeplay format at the Tenerife ladies Match Play on Sunday 12th June, earning a one shot victory at Golf las Américas.

The 28-year-old from Abergele in North Wales played superb golf to hold off the challenge of Australian Nikki Garrett and Spain’s rising star Carlota Ciganda, who shared second on her professional debut. It was Brewerton’s third victory as a professional following wins at the 2007 English Open and the 2009 Spanish Open. She had previously finished second three times in Tenerife, including once on the same golf course as an amateur in 2003.

She had secured the most comprehensive victory of the opening day on Friday 10th, when she defeated Australian Kristie Smith 8 and 6 in the matchplay format. She then ousted 79-time tournament champion Laura Davies in the second round of matchplay on Saturday 11th with a birdie on the 19th hole.As one of the last eight players in the event, Brewerton went into the final round full of confidence and earned the early advantage with birdies on the second, fifth and seventh holes. At the seventh, she hit a rescue club from 210 yards to set up an eagle chance, but just missed from 12 feet. At the par-five ninth, she dropped a shot after missing the green with her second shot, but hit the turn one ahead at two under par. She holed a bunker shot for birdie from the right side of the 10th green, then, after finding sand again on 11, she dropped a shot but quickly recovered, sinking a seven-footer on the par-three 13th.There was a ‘hairy moment’ on 14 when her tee shot came to rest behind some palm trees resulting in a second shot which flew the green, but she played an excellent chip to five feet and holed the putt for par. She dropped a shot at the 15th, but two-putted for birdie from 35 feet at the next. After signing off with a birdie on 18,

there was a tense wait by the clubhouse with both Ciganda and Garrett able to tie with a birdie. However Ciganda’s second shot found water and Garrett missed a 15 foot birdie putt, allowing Brewerton to claim the €40,000 first prize.Brewerton hopes that the win will kick-start her season, as she has recently recovered from a foot injury, which started in Portugal. She said: “This is the main start of the season coming up with some massive tournaments. I’m absolutely desperate to make The Solheim team so I’ve just got to try and make as many points as possible.”Although Solheim Cup points were not awarded, her performance will certainly have caught the eye of European Captain Alison Nicholas, who will be making notes for her team selection ahead of the big matchplay event at Killeen Castle in Ireland from September 23rd-25th.More information is available at www.tenerifematchplay.com
