Cleaning Up in NY After Sandy

A Letter from SWS President - Bill Riggs

A new year means a new trade show season and Somerset Welding & Steel is making preparations to exhibit at two of the largest shows we do during the year.

First up is the NTEA Work Truck Show, the premier event for the display of vocational trucks and truck equip-ment. This is an interesting show for J&J because unlike most shows where we focus on end users, at the NTEA show, we meet with existing J&J distributors and look at expanding our network of dealers. So, if you are interested in becoming a distributor of J&J products, come visit us at the NTEA show.

The second show is the Mid America Truck Show. It is the annual forum for the heavy-duty trucking industry, providing face-to-face interaction between industry representatives and trucking professionals. J&J exhibits in a large booth space featuring new products developed for emerging or growth markets and traditional products

that serve customers and markets the company was founded upon. We invite you to come see what we are up to and “talk shop” with the J&J staff. We are always interested in hearing what you have going on.

Last December, J&J manufactured 15 steel Material Hauler (MH) Dyna-

Haulers for a customer in New York. The trucks are being used to help with clean up efforts and removal of debris caused by the tragic storm that hit the area at the end of October.

J&J worked with several distributors and government agencies after the storm as-sisting in expediting orders in an effort to provide replacement equipment that was damaged during the storm and providing new trucks to complement current fleets.

In addition to the build and ship munic-ipal units for New York, J&J also built dump bodies that are currently working in Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.

15 dump bodies were loaded on trailers and shipped to New York where they were mounted on agency trucks. The J&J build & ship program allows municipal distributors to order any size or model J&J dump body and have them shipped to their facility.

Several J&J staff members are at hand to man J&J’s booth. The Mid America Show is the largest one that J&J does during the year. We contract close to 3600 square feet of space, so that we can display our latest and most innovative new dump bodies, trailers, and other specialty equipment. It’s the event where our customers can get up close and personal with our commercial dump bodies, see the expert workmanship, and visit with our sales staff. J&J will also have J&J dump bodies displayed at OEM booths such as Western Star, Mack Trucks, Peterbilt, and Kenworth. Make plans to visit their booths as well.

There’s no substitute for a dump body or trailer built by J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers.

J&J regularly reviews customer satis-faction metrics and customer feed-

back, internal key performance indicators (KPI), and engages in strategic planning. These activities help us determine how we are doing, new product opportunities and what we can do to enhance our customer’s return on the investment in our products.

The new J&J EVO MPB (Multi-Purpose Body) is an output from these activities. The MPB is the lightest weight truck mounted center conveyor in the industry. Purpose built for higher payloads, mitigation of roll over risk, and low overhead working conditions, the Dyna-Paver is designed for “The Long Haul”. This design features J&J’s insulated high strength aluminum EVO series side conveyor panels, variable speed asphalt rated conveyor, Hardox abrasion re-sistant sub-floor, and double acting tailgate for metered or high speed unloading.

Watt’s Truck Center ordered 3 of these J&J Ultra Light (UL) steel dump bodies for their customer who is in the contracting business. Ultra Light dump bodies models are extremely popular with J&J customers.

J&F Contracting owns this truck which was mounted with a steel lightweight crossmemberless dump body. According to Frank Gagliardi, “We could not ask for a better body!” Thanks, Frank!

Tri-Boro Construction Supplies owns several J&J dump bodies. This Mack fea-tures a polished aluminum Material Hauler, one of J&J’s most popular models. The truck was featured at J&J’s booth at the Mid America Show last year.

Marshall Trucking submitted a recent photo of this J&J polished aluminum dump body which they purchased in 2002. The Western Star chassis has 835,000 miles and according to Bob Marshall, “The J&J dump body has given me the great service for 10 years and still looks great!” Thanks, Bob!

Kenworth employees donated nearly 7,500 pounds of food to North-west Harvest in Washington state. In the spirit

of the holiday season, Kenworth employees in Kirkland, WA conducted a food drive that result-ed in the nearly-four-ton donation. One of the company’s Kenworth T270 medium duty trucks was loaded and driven to make the delivery. Kenworth Truck Company is the manufacturer of The World’s Best ® heavy and medium duty trucks.

Caterpillar recently unveiled the first model in its new line of hybrid excavator, the Cat ® 336EH at the trade show, “The Next Generation is

Here.” The new 336EH will be sold and serviced exclusively through the global Cat dealer network following the machine’s official launch in Munich, Germany. The order board opens in February of this year, with factory shipments starting in

March.

Freightliner announced that it is now offering a customer demon-strator program for its all-new Freightliner Cas-

cadia ® 113 natural gas day cab. Five customer demonstrator tractors will be available in the United States and Canada to provide customers direct experience with Freightliner’s newest alter-native fuel product. “Natural gas products can result in significant fuel cost savings, making it a smart choice for increasing profitability while ben-efitting the environment,” says TJ Reed, Director of Product Strategy for Freightliner.

Hino Trucks deployed the Road to Recov-ery Assistance Program for cus-tomers impacted by Hurricane Sandy in Novem-

ber, 2012. Hino dealers in the New York Metro and Northeast regions were introduced to this initiative. Hino provided $1,000 in assistance for every truck being bought to replace a damaged or lost truck as a result of Hurricane Sandy and set aside inventory for immediate delivery to help customers recover as quickly as possible.

Isuzu Com-mercial Truck of America announced the debut of food trucks to their line. Nine Isuzu NRR diesel cab

chassis were outfitted as food trucks by Mobi Munch, Inc. and placed into service on college campuses throughout the United States. Due to the success of this launch, additional trucks will be servicing other campuses in early 2013. These trucks provide latin, Asian, and hot dogs vendor-style.

Navistar De-fense Canada highlighted its lat-est in International ® brand military vehicles recently at the Expodefen-sa expo in Bogo-

ta, Columbia. As part of the display, the company featured its new Special Operations Tactical Vehicle. This is the company’s vehicle entry for the US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) Ground Mobility Vehicle (GMV) 1.1 program. The vehicle’s highly-mobile, mission-ready platform is engineered specifically to carry large payloads while handling the roughest terrain.

Peterbilt Mo-tors Company displayed at the Great American Truck Show in Dallas, Texas, where they had the opportuni-

ty to attend business strategy meetings and participate in educational seminars. This was a great venue for their new Model 579 and other Peterbilt models. Peterbilt combines a global reputation for industry leading design, innovative engineering and fuel efficiency solutions, with superior quality to engineer a truck that stands as the “Class” of the industry.

Western Star rolled out a new website dedi-cated to its fans. Through www.StarNation.com, Western Star owners, opera-

tors, and enthusiasts can browse news, forums, and photo galleries. Managed by Western Star owners and fans, Star Nation joins the wide-spread Western Star community together to exchange maintenance tips, locate hard-to-find parts for older trucks, and share experiences. Online registration is free and members can per-sonalize their profiles with a picture and brief bio.

Volvo Trucks recently announced that the US Environmen-tal Protection Agency (EPA) and National highway Traffic Safety Adminis-tration (NHTSA) have awarded

all model year 2014 Volvo vehicles certificates of conformance under the first-ever greenhouse gas regulations for heavy trucks. According to Goran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North American Sales and Marketing, “Environmental care is a longstanding Volvo core value, and we will continue to work with EPA and NHTSA to deliver on the important goals of these regula-tions.”

1. The flat bed stake body truck was mounted on a Ford truck provided by PBS Coals. It measures 11 feet, 2 inches long and is 96 inches wide. Solid aluminum drop-in removable sides were installed along with an Auto Crane 3,200 lb. capacity crane.

2. J&J Truck Equipment has been busy installing several winch systems on tractors provided by our customers. 4x4 Unlimited provided the Peterbilt and J&J installed a Wildcat 80 LB winch which can be controlled from inside or outside the cab.

3. Pocono Peterbilt provided the chassis and J&J installed a custom aluminum flat bed that measures 26 feet long and 102 inches wide. It was later outfitted with a sideboard kit by the end user, Robinson Trucking.
