As on Maundy Thursday, we

celebrate the Body of Christ –

but this time without the sense of

impending doom of knowing what would

come on Good Friday.

The Feast of Corpus Christi -- which

is always on the Thursday following Trinity

Sunday -- has an interesting history. Its

inspiration is due to two things: the first is

the Miracle of Bolsena, which happened in

AD 1263. Peter of Prague, a German priest,

during a pilgrimage to Rome, stopped at

the Church of St. Christina there to offer Mass. While he was a holy

and devout man, he harboured doubts about the Real Presence --

doubts which were completely resolved when the Host he

consecrated during that Mass began to bleed. He rushed to meet

Pope Urban IV in Orvieto, bringing the Host with him. The miracle

was declared, and the Host is still on display at the Cathedral of

Orvieto today.

The second source of inspiration was an Augustinian nun, a

Belgian named St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon (AD 1193-1258). She

had a vision of the Moon that was full and beautiful, but marked by

a black spot that signified that there was no joyous celebration of the

Eucharist in the entire Church calendar. In response to both of the

above, Pope Urban IV eventually published a Bull, Transiturus, in

AD 1264, which made this Feast a part of the calendar. The Mass

includes the Lauda Sion Sequence by St. Thomas Aquinas, and

typically, a procession followed by the greatest Eucharistic hymns

of the Church, also written by St. Thomas especially for this Feast.

These include Sacris Solemnis, Ave Verum, Adoro Te, and Verbum

Supernum. Eucharistic Processions were traditionally held today,

and in still relatively Catholic countries, those who live along the

procession route decorate their homes with greenery, floral wreaths,

and banners, and put candles in the windows. Rose petals are strewn

in the path of the Sacrament. ~Fisheaters

PLENARY INDULGENCE! Under the usual conditions, Catholics may

gain a plenary indulgence when they begin today on the Feast of Corpus

Christi, the Nine-Day Novena to the Sacred Heart in preparation for and

to conclude on the Feast of the Sacred Heart, the following Friday.

Feast Day: Thu, 24 June

Elizabeth brought forth a son, and her neighbours rejoiced with her. The birth of Saints brings joy to very many, since it is a benefit to all; for justice is a virtue for all. And so, in the birth of a just man, a token of his future life is foreshown, and the grace of the virtue to come is expressed by the prophetic joy of the neighbours. It is fitting that there should be mention of the time when the Prophet was in the womb, lest the presence of Mary should not be remembered; but nothing is told of the time of his childhood, for he did not know the disabilities of childhood. And so we read nothing of him in the Gospel, except his birth, and his announcement, the leaping in the womb, the voice in the wilderness.

For he did not experience the helplessness of childhood, he who supernaturally, outstripping his age, began from the measure of the age of the fulness of Christ, when still tying in his mother's womb. It is strange how the holy Evangelist thought it necessary to tell us that many considered that the child should be called by his father's name of Zachary; in order that you might notice that the mother would not have the name of any relative, but only that given by the Holy Ghost, which the Angel had previously announced to Zachary. And indeed, the latter, still mute, could not tell his wife the name of their son; but Elizabeth learned by prophecy what she had not learned from her husband.

John, he says, is his name; that is, it is not for us to give a name to the one who has already received a name from God. He has his name, which we know, but we did not choose it. To receive a name from God is one of the rewards of the Saints. So Jacob was called Israel, because he saw God. So our Lord Jesus was named before He was born; not an Angel, however, but His Father gave Him His Name. You see that Angels announce what they have heard, not what they take upon themselves. Do not wonder, that the woman pronounced a name she had not heard; when the Holy Ghost, who had commanded the Angel, revealed it to her.

Saint John the Baptist, whom I have chosen as my special patron, pray for me that I, too, may one day glorify the Blessed Trinity in heaven.

Obtain for me your lively faith, that I may consider all persons, things, and events in the light of Almighty God. Pray, that I may be generous

in making sacrifices of temporal things to promote my eternal interests, as you so wisely did.

Set me on fire with a love for Jesus, that I may thirst for His Sacraments and burn with zeal for the spread of His Kingdom. By your powerful intercession, help me in the performance of my duties to God,

myself and all the world.

Win for me the virtue of purity and a great confidence in the Blessed Virgin. Protect me this day, and every day of my life. Keep me from

mortal sin. Obtain for me the grace of a happy death. Amen.

I (N.), give and consecrate to the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ, my person, my life, my actions, my pains and sufferings, so that I may be unwilling to make use of any part of my being save to honour, love, and glorify the Sacred Heart. It is my unchanging intention to be all His and to do all for love of Him. I renounce at the same time with all my heart whatever can displease Him.

I, therefore, take You, O Sacred Heart, for the only object of my love, the protector of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my weakness and inconstancy, the atonement for the faults of my life, and the secure refuge at the hour of my death.

Be then, O Heart of goodness, my justification before God the Father, and turn away from me the punishment of His Just Anger. O Heart of Love, I put my confidence in Thee, because I fear everything from my own sinfulness and weakness. I hope for all things from Thy mercy and generosity.

Destroy in me all that can displease or resist Thy Holy Will. Let Thy Pure Love impress so deeply upon my heart that I may never forget Thee or be separated from Thee. May my name, by Thy loving kindness, be imprinted upon Thy Sacred Heart, because in Thee I desire to place all my happiness and all my glory in living and dying in very bondage to you. Amen.
