The Liar's Dictionary A Novel Eley Will iams "The Liar's Dictionary is the book I was longing for. So eudaemonical, so felicific and habile! A harlequinade of cachinnation! It's hilarious and smart and charming and I loved it. Read it. It's the book you're longing for." --Andrew Sean Greer, 2018 Pulitzer Prize winner for Less
An exhilarating and laugh-out-loud debut novel from a prize-winning new talent which chronicles the misadventures of a lovelorn Victorian lexicographer and the young woman put on his trail a century later to root out his misdeeds while confronting questions of her own sexuality and place in the world. Mountweaze l n. the phenomenon of false entries within dictionaries and works of reference. Often used as a safeguard against copyright infringement.
Peter Winceworth, Victorian lexicographer, is toiling away at the letter S for Swansby's multivolume Encyclopaedic Dictionary. His disaffection compels him to insert unauthorized fictitious entries into the dictionary in an attempt to assert some sense of individual purpose and artistic freedom.
In the present day, Mallory, a young intern employed by the publisher, is tasked with uncovering these mountweazels before the work is digitized. She also has to contend with threatening phone calls from an anonymous caller. Is the change in the definition of marriage really tha t upsetting? And does the caller really intend for the Swansby's staff to 'burn in hell'?
As these two narratives combine, both Winceworth and Mallory discover how they might negotiate the complexities of the often nonsensical, relentless, untrustworthy, hoax-strewn, and undefinable path we call life. An exhilarating debut novel from a formidably brill iant young writer, The Liar's Dictionary celebrates the rigidity, fragility, absurdity, and joy of language.
WORD-NERD CATNIP: The endlessly inventive wordplay is a delight on every page. LITERARY COOL KID: Williams's work has received ecstatic praise from Max Porter, Sarah Perry, and Melissa Harrison, and she also counts Sally Rooney, Olivia Laing, and Jon McGregor among her many fans. We expect fabulous blurbs and big-name review attention. UK COATTAILS: An eagerly awaited novel in the UK, on every major "Most Anticipated" list, Heinemann will publish in July 2020, with us following in Fall 2020 with their reviews and potential prize nominations to fuel our fire.

A Tip for the Hangman A Novel Allison Epstein Christopher Marlowe, a brilliant aspiring playwright, is pulled into the duplicitous world of international espionage on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I. A many-layered historical thriller combining state secrets, intrigue, and romance. England, 1585. In Kit Marlowe's last year at Cambridge, he receives an unexpected visitor: Queen Elizabeth's spymaster, who has come with an unorthodox career opportunity. Her Majesty's spies are in need of new recruits, and Kit's flexible moral compass has drawn their attention. Kit, a scholarship student without money or prospects, accepts the offer, and after his training the game is on. Kit is dispatched to the chilly manor where Mary, Queen of Scots is under house arrest, to act as a servant in her household and keep his ear to the ground for a Catholic plot to put Mary on the throne.
While observing Mary, Kit learns more than he bargained for. The ripple effects of his service to the Crown are far-reaching and leave Kit a changed man. But there are benefits as well. The salary he earns through his spywork allows him to mount his first play, and over the following years, he becomes the toast of London's raucous theater scene. But when Kit finds himself reluctantly drawn back into the uncertain world of espionage, conspiracy, and high treason, he realizes everything he's worked so hard to attain--including the trust of the man he loves--could vanish before his very eyes.
Pairing modern language with period detail, Allison Epstein brings Elizabeth's privy council, Marlowe's lovable theater troupe, and the squalor of sixteenth-century London to vivid, teeming life as Kit wends his way behind the scenes of some of Tudor history's most memorable moments. At the center of the action is Kit himself--an irrepressible, irreverent force of nature. Thrillingly written, full of poetry and danger, A Tip for the Hangman brings an unforgettable protagonist to new life, and makes a centuries-old story feel utterly contemporary.
ELIZABETHAN ENGLAND: A thrilling read perfect for fans of Hilary Mantel and Philippa Gregory, featuring famous and infamous historical characters who come to life on the page. LOVABLE PROTAGONIST: Kit is a charismatic, resourceful scamp who grows up over the course of the novel, and whose wry sense of humor and sarcastic tone give A Tip for the Hangman a modern edge for the historical setting. BEFORE THERE WAS SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE, THERE WAS MARLOWE'S ROSE: Kit's friends include familiar actors, playwrights, and theater folk such as Shakespeare, Ned Alleyn, and Richard Burbage. HEARTFELT LOVE STORY: Kit's lovely romance with Tom is one of the novel's central strengths, and a key component of the action of the novel's second half. DEBUT AUTHOR: Allison Epstein is twenty-eight years old, holds an M.F.A. from Northwestern, and is a copy-writer at a Chicago ad agency, which gives us the exciting opportunity to launch her bright new career!

Khalil A Novel Yasmina Khadra From the internationally bestselling author of The Attack and The Swallows of Kabul, a gripping first-person narrative about one young man's involvement in France's worst terrorist attack. Khalil, a twenty-three-year-old Belgian of Moroccan descent, plans to detonate a suicide vest in a crowd outside the Stade de France on November 13, 2015. Explosions are rocking Paris, at cafés and the Bataclan theater, and when other bombs drive the stadium crowd to flee in his direction, near the Metro, his time has come. He presses his button, and . . . nothing. Fearing he has failed in his mission for Fraternel Solidarity (FS), an ISIS affiliate, Khalil has little choice but to blend in with his would-be victims and run. Back in Belgium, he must lie low and avoid his militant brethren and the authorities. He relies on his family and friends for places to stay, but he keeps the truth about himself secret. All the while, he contemplates what he almost did, and what he will do next--particularly when it comes to light that his vest accidently had been a harmless training unit all along, and FS has a new mission planned for him. In this daring, propulsive literary thriller, Yasmina Khadra takes readers to the margins of Europe's glittering capitals, through neighborhoods isolated by government neglect and popular apathy, if not outright racism. And he brings to life an unusual protagonist, a young man struggling with family, religion, and politics who makes fateful choices, and in doing so dramatizes powerful questions about society and human nature.
A RARE PERSPECTIVE: Reading Khalil's first-person narrative offers American readers a peek into a mind and heart we rarely ever have a chance to contemplate. He's presented as an ordinary person who's been pushed too far--not so much by religious fanaticism as by the psychological, social, political, and cultural conditions in which he lives: by racism, poverty, helplessness, societal rage, and general resentment. It's a moving and revealing portrait. KHADRA GOES WHERE OTHERS DARE NOT: Khalil is a masterly and chilling look at radicalization and violence and their effects on ordinary people. Like Khadra's previous novels, it's a powerful exploration of the depths of human nature and shows that, even in the most horrific circumstances, good can prevail. MAJOR BESTSELLER IN FRANCE: Éditions Robert Laffont quickly sold more than 100,000 copies during the fall of 2018.
About the Author/ I l lustrator Author Residence: Paris, France YASMINA KHADRA is the pen name of the former Algerian army officer Mohammed Moulessehoul. He adopted his wife's name as a pseudonym to avoid military censorship. He is the author of more than twenty books, at least six of which have been published in English, among them The Swallows of Kabul and The Attack, both short-listed for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. He has twice been honored by the Académie française, winning both the Médaille de Vermeil (2001) and Grand Prix de Littérature (2011). He lives in France. Translated by John Cullen.

Red Line The Unraveling of Syria and America's Race to Destroy the Most Dangerous Arsenal in the World Joby Warrick From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Black Flags, the harrowing story of America's mission in Syria: to find and destroy Syria's chemical weapons and defeat ISIS--only to lose control of both In August 2012, Syrian president Bashar al-Assad was clinging to power in a vicious civil war. Concerned that Assad might resort to chemical weapons, President Obama warned that any such use would cross "a red line," warranting an American military response. When a year later Assad bombed the Damascus suburb of Ghouta with sarin gas, killing hundreds, Obama was torn between living up to America's word and becoming mired in another unpopular Middle Eastern war. So when Russia offered to store Syria's chemical weapons, Obama leaped at the out. So begins a race to find, remove, and destroy 1,300 tons of chemical weapons in the middle of Syria's civil war. Told in harrowing detail, the effort is a tactical triumph for the Americans, but soon Russia's long game becomes clear: it has UN cover to assist a close ally, Assad. As the Russians block attempts to check for chemical weapons that might have been missed, American realizes that ISIS seeks to secure them for itself. Red Line is a classic Joby Warrick true-life thriller: a character-driven narrative with a cast of heroes and villains, including weapons hunters, politicians, commandos, diplomats, and spies. Through original reporting and eyewitness accounts from direct participants, Joby Warrick reveals how a well-intentioned effort to save Syrian lives touched off a chain of events that would rescue a dictator, sustain a terrorist movement, unleash torrents of refugees, humiliate two U.S. presidents, and empower Russia and Iran.
THE ISIS STORY CONTINUES: Red Line picks up in time where Black Flags left off, showing the defeat of ISIS's caliphate. But the group remains a threat to the West, with $400 million in the bank and a new interest in chemical weapons. UP TO THE MINUTE: Joby writes right up to the headlines in which Trump pulls U.S. forces out of the region, emboldening Putin and Assad and freeing ISIS prisoners to regroup. PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING REPORTER: Warrick is a first-rate journalist with extensive media contacts. He won a Pulitzer Prize for Black Flags and another Pulitzer for his journalism. He has appeared on CNN, Fox, and PBS to discuss the CIA and terrorism. RIVETING NARRATIVE: Once again, Warrick draws on multiple points of view to create a fast-paced page-turner in the style of Mark Bowden's Black Hawk Down, while his sources and insight into terrorism recall The Looming Tower.
About the Author/ I l lustrator Author Residence: Centreville, VA JOBY WARRICK has been a reporter for The Washington Post since 1996. He has twice won the Pulitzer Prize, for journalism and for his book Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS. He is also the author of The Triple Agent.

Mine! How the Hidden Rules of Ownership Control Our Lives Michael A. Heller and James Salzman A hidden set of rules governs who owns what--explaining everything from whether you can recline your airplane seat to why HBO lets you borrow a password illegally--and in this lively and entertaining guide, two acclaimed law professors reveal how things become "mine." "Mine" is one of the first words babies learn. By the time we grow up, the idea of ownership seems natural, whether buying a cup of coffee or a house. But who controls the space behind your airplane seat: you reclining or the squished laptop user behind? Why is plagiarism wrong, but it's okay to knock-off a recipe or a dress design? And after a snowstorm, why does a chair in the street hold your parking space in Chicago, but in New York you lose the space and the chair?
Mine! explains these puzzles and many more. Surprisingly, there are just six simple stories that everyone uses to claim everything. Owners choose the story that steers us to do what they want. But we can always pick a different story. This is true not just for airplane seats, but also for battles over digital privacy, climate change, and wealth inequality. As Michael Heller and James Salzman show--in the spirited style of Freakonomics, Nudge, and Predictably Irrational--ownership is always up for grabs.
With stories that are eye-opening, mind-bending, and sometimes infuriating, Mine! reveals the rules of ownership that secretly control our lives.
A BIG IDEA BOOK: Mine! does for ownership what The Signal and the Noise did for statistics and Predictably Irrational did for psychology--it reveals an invisible set of rules that guide everyday life. FUN TAKEAWAYS: By the end of Mine! you'll know that you can sell your blood but not your kidney, that someone can trespass on your land to pick mushrooms but not apples, and whether HBO can arrest you for borrowing a password. (Trick question! They want you to!) LIVELY STORYTELLING: Drawing on dozens of cases and examples, the authors dramatize their principles with fascinating stories of how ownership is less transparent than we assume. PROMOTABLE AUTHORS: Heller and Salzman have experience promoting and have been voted favorite professor for making learning clear and fun.
About the Author/ I l lustrator Author Residence: New York, NY and Santa Barbara, CA MICHAEL HELLER and JAMES SALZMAN are among the world's leading authorities on ownership. HELLER is the Lawrence A. Wien Professor of Real Estate Law at Columbia Law School. He is the author of The Gridlock Economy: How Too Much Ownership Wrecks Markets, Stops Innovation, and Costs Lives. Brood A Novel Jackie Polzin An exquisite new literary voice--wryly funny, nakedly honest, beautifully observational, in the vein of Jenny Offill and Elizabeth Strout--depicts one woman's attempt to keep her four chickens alive while reflecting on a recent loss Over the course of a single year, our nameless narrator heroically tries to keep her small brood of four chickens alive despite the seemingly endless challenges that caring for another creature entails. From the forty-below nights of a brutal Minnesota winter to a sweltering summer which brings a surprise tornado, she battles predators, bad luck, and the uncertainty of a future that may not look anything like the one she always imagined.
Intimate and startlingly original, this slender novel is filled with wisdom, sorrow and joy. As the year unfolds, we come to know the small band of loved ones who comprise the narrator's circumscribed life at this moment. Her mother, a flinty former home-ec teacher who may have to take over the chickens; her best friend, a real estate agent with a burgeoning family of her own; and her husband whose own coping mechanisms for dealing with the miscarriage that haunts his wife are more than a little unfathomable to her.
A stunning and brilliantly insightful meditation on life and longing that will stand beside such modern classics as H is for Hawk and Gilead, Brood rewards its readers with the richness of reflection and unrelenting hope.
VOICE: She brings the economy of Jenny Offill, the sharpness of Miranda July, and the narrative drive drawn from everyday life of Elizabeth Strout. MIDWESTERN SETTING: Set in Minnesota, this novel is packed with the kind of unusual, unforgettable details (a rooster frozen to a barn roof?!) that make for a stand-out read. CONVERSATION STARTER: Polzin tackles a very difficult and deeply personal subject, one that affects a staggering number of women yet remains shrouded in silence. Brood is a profoundly affecting read, one that prompts conversations and shared stories. SLIM BOOK/BROAD READERSHIP: Short enough to be read in a single sitting, Brood will be as easily embraced by book clubs as literary tastemakers. BUZZ: We won this in an eight-way auction, and the subsequent auction in the U.K. lasted nearly a week.

Ageless The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old Andrew Steele A startling chronicle by a brilliant young scientist takes us onto the frontiers of the science of aging, and reveals how close we are to an astonishing extension of our life spans and a vastly improved quality of life in our later years. Aging--not cancer, not heart disease--is the true underlying cause of most human death and suffering. We accept as inevitable that as we advance in years our bodies and minds begin to deteriorate and that we are ever more likely to be felled by dementia or disease. But we never really ask--is aging necessary? Biologists, on the other hand, have been investigating that question for years. After all, there are tortoises and salamanders whose risk of dying is the same no matter how old they are. With the help of science, could humans find a way to become old without getting frail, a phenomenon known as "biological immortality"?
In Ageless, Andrew Steele, a computational biologist and science writer, takes us on a journey through the laboratories where scientists are studying every bodily system that declines with age--DNA, mitochondria, stem cells, our immune systems--and developing therapies to reverse the trend. With bell-clear writing and intellectual passion, Steele shines a spotlight on a little-known revolution already underway.
A BIG IDEA THAT REFRAMES MOST DISEASES AS ILLNESSES OF AGING: We tend to think of heart disease, dementia, and cancers as different diseases to be separately researched, prevented, or cured. Steele shows us that most diseases are diseases of aging and can be solved in one swoop with this approach. FASCINATING REVELATIONS: We learn that every year our life expectancy increases by three months, and about an epigenetic clock that can tell you when you are going to die. ACTION ITEMS: The first antiaging therapies are coming to market in a few short years. But Steele also reveals what we should do now. Avoid sugar, yes. Take vitamins, no. And absolutely do wear sunscreen. PROMOTABLE AUTHOR: In the UK, Steele is both a serious scientist and a public figure, seen on television and radio, at festivals, and even doing stand-up comedy.
About the Author/ I l lustrator Author Residence: London, UK After obtaining a PhD in physics from the University of Oxford, ANDREW STEELE decided that ageing was the most important scientific challenge of our time, and switched fields to computational biology. He worked at the Francis Crick Institute, using machine learning to decode our DNA and predict heart attacks using patients' medical records. He is now a ful-time science writer and presenter based in London. He has appeared on Discovery and the BBC.

The Bedside Book of Birds An Avian Miscellany Graeme Gibson In this lushly illustrated volume, novelist and lifelong birdwatcher Graeme Gibson presents an extraordinary tribute to the eternal relationship between humans and birds, featuring a new introduction by Margaret Atwood. Birds have always been the symbols of humankind's highest aspirations. As divine messengers, signifiers of our reach toward enlightenment, or avatars of glorious song and color, they have stirred our imaginations for generations. Whether the Christian dove, the Aztec Plumed Serpent, or Plato's vision of the human soul growing wings and feathers, religion and philosophy have selected birds as representatives of our better, spiritual selves.
With the passion of a birdwatcher and lover of words, Gibson collects the literary and artistic forms our affinity for birds have taken over the centuries. Birds appear again and again in mythology and folk tales, and in literature by writers as disparate as Ovid, Thomas Hardy, Kafka, Thoreau and T.S. Eliot. They've been omens, allegories, disguises and guides; they've been worshipped, eaten, feared and loved. Birds figure charmingly and tellingly in the work of such nature writers as Gilbert White, Peter Matthiessen, Farley Mowat and Barry Lopez, and feature in many of science's most famous case studies, notably the Galapagos finches who cemented Darwin's reputation. Birds are inextricable throughout our scholarly and creative pursuits.
Gorgeously illustrated, woven from centuries of human response to the delights of feathered fowl, The Bedside Book of Birds is for anyone who has a curiosity about birds, and for everyone who is intrigued by the artistic forms that humanity has created to represent its soul in flight.
ATWOOD INTRODUCTION: Featuring a new introduction from Margaret Atwood. GORGEOUS GIFT BOOK: The perfect paper-over-board gift book for the birder market and a lovely introduction for armchair naturalists. WRITER'S WRITER: Gibson was heavily involved in the Canadian literary world, and this delightful collection of words and images highlights his thoughtful, forward-thinking style. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: Gibson's beautiful prose and creative pairing of subjects ranging from literature, science, art, religion, and mythology means that there's something here for every reader with an interest in birds. PACKED WITH EXCITING MATERIAL: Gibson lovingly incorporates over 140 selections from writers all over the world and through centuries, which pair perfectly with 4-color art throughout.
Praise for The Bedside Book of Birds: "Gibson's book is a stunner. The wealth of imagery and the range of intelligence are grand, the kinds of relationships with birds he sets out nearly bewildering." - -Barry Lopez

When I Ran Away A Novel I lona Bannister A rich, bighearted debut that takes us from working-class Staten Island in the wake of the September 11th attacks to moneyed London a decade later, revealing a story of loss, motherhood, and love. As the Twin Towers collapse, Gigi Stanislawski flees her office building and escapes lower Manhattan on the Staten Island Ferry. Among the crying, ash-covered, and shoeless passengers, Gigi, unbelievably, finds someone she recognizes--Harry Harrison, a British man and a regular at her favorite coffee shop. Gigi brings Harry to her parents' house, where they watch the television replay the planes crashing for hours, and she waits for the phone call that will never come: the call from Frankie, her younger brother.
Ten years later, Gigi, now a single mother consumed with bills and unfulfilled ambitions, meets Harry, again by chance, and they fall deeply, headlong in love. But their move to London and their new baby--which Gigi hoped would finally release her from the past--leave her feeling isolated, raw, and alone with her grief. As Gigi comes face-to-face with the anguish of her brother's death and her rage at the unspoken pain of motherhood, she must somehow find the light amid all the darkness. Startlingly honest and shot through with unexpected humor, When I Ran Away is an unforgettable first novel about love--for our partners, our children, our mothers, and ourselves--pushed to its outer limits.
VOICE: This is voice-driven book club fiction for readers who loved Eleanor Oliphant. Gigi is a marvelous creation, bighearted and profane, self-deprecating with a tough-girl exterior that belies a tender and intense love.
SUBJECT: Gigi is suffering from acute postpartum depression and Ilona Bannister brilliantly shows how even the strongest women can be felled by the potent brew of work pressure, parenthood, inadequate mental-health resources, and stigma. It's an ultimately uplifting portrait of a woman falling apart and pulling it back together.
AUTHOR: Ilona Bannister grew up in New York and has family here, but lives in London and is that rare writer who will be an asset on both sides of the pond. She's a passionate advocate for women and mental health and speaks eloquently on her inspiration for the novel.
About the Author/ I l lustrator Author Residence: London Author Hometown: Staten Island, New York ILONA BANNISTER grew up on Staten Island and lived in New York City until she married a Brit and moved to London. Ilona Bannister, a dual qualified U.S. attorney and UK solicitor, practiced immigration law in the UK before taking a career break to raise her two young sons and unexpectedly found herself writing fiction. When I Ran Away is Ilona Bannister's first novel.

The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity Carlo M. Cipolla
"A masterly book" --Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of The Black Swan "A classic" --Simon Kuper, Financial Times
In the spirit of On Bullshit and Assholes: A Theory, an economist explores the five laws that confirm our worst fears: stupid people can and do rule the world Throughout history, a powerful force has hindered the growth of human welfare and happiness. It is more powerful than the Mafia or the military. It has global catastrophic effects and can be found anywhere from the world's most powerful boardrooms to your local bar.
It is human stupidity.
Carlo M. Cipolla, noted professor of economic history at the UC Berkeley, created this vitally important book in order to detect and neutralize its threat. Both hilarious and dead serious, it will leave you better equipped to confront political realities, unreasonable colleagues, or your next dinner with your in-laws.
The Laws:
1. Everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals among us.
2. The probability that a certain person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person while deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses themselves.
4. Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals.
5. A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person. AN INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER: 350,000 copies have been sold in Italy since 1988 and 50,000 copies in France since 2011. It has also been translated into German, Spanish, Galician, Catalan, Turkish, Portuguese, Hungarian, Czech, Romanian, Japanese, and Korean. FIRST US PUBLICATION: Although it was originally written in English, in the US, this marks the first time it's being released for American readers. POWERFUL ENDORSEMENTS: Carlo Rovelli and Simon Kuper have both called Cippola's book "a classic" and Nassim Nicholas Taleb wrote a foreword for the English-language edition in which he praises it as "a masterly book." A PROVOCATIVE ARGUMENT IN A SMALL PACKAGE: Like On Bullshit and Assholes: A Theory, this is a timeless treatise that will become a lively talking point. A PERFECT IMPULSE-BUY: Also like those titles, this is a short, giftable book. It offers great sales opportunities during the holidays, with great potential for white elephant gift-exchanges.

His classic treatise The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity was first published in 1988 and has been published in more than ten languages. The God Equation The Quest for a Theory of Everything Michio Kaku Michio Kaku, renowned theoretical physicist and New York Times bestselling author of Hyperspace and The Future of Humanity, tells the story of the greatest quest in all of science. When Newton discovered the laws of motion and gravity, he unified the rules of heaven and earth. From then on, physicists have been discovering new forces and incorporating them into ever-greater theories. But the major breakthroughs of the twentieth century--relativity and quantum mechanics--are incompatible, and so since then, physicists have been endeavoring to combine these two theories. This would ultimately tie all the forces in the universe together into one beautiful equation that can unlock the deepest mysteries of space and time. That epic journey is the story of this book.
COMMERCIAL APPEAL: Like Astrophysics for People in a Hurry and Seven Brief Lessons on Physics, The God Equation is a short, accessible, and lively account of fundamental ideas in modern physics that provides perfect fodder for armchair scientists. Kaku is an enthusiastic guide as he tells the story of science's greatest luminaries, from Newton to Einstein to those of today, and shows how their breakthroughs not only changed the world but were also steps on the path to a theory of everything. This is poised to be Kaku's most successful title to date. BESTSELLING TRACK: Michio Kaku's two previous books have been national bestsellers. His most recent, The Future of Humanity (2018) debuted at #7 on the New York Times bestseller list and spent 4 weeks on the list, and The Future of the Mind (2014), debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and spent six weeks on the list. All in, we've sold more than 1.5 million copies of his books, and they continue to sell tens of thousands of copies annually. AUTHOR PLATFORM: Dr. Kaku is one of the most charismatic and visible figures in science today and is utterly beloved by his extensive fan base. He is a phenomenal speaker who is often tapped as a keynote speaker at a variety of events and whose appearances at museums and universities nearly always sell out. He also interacts regularly with his 3 million Facebook fans (1.4 million in the United States) and 700,000 Twitter followers. MEDIA: Dr. Kaku is a media mainstay. He is the national science contributor for the CBS This Morning, and has appeared on Good Morning America, Today, 60 Minutes, Nightline, and all the major networks. He has hosted several television specials on the Science Channel and Discovery Science. He also hosts the radio programs Science Fantastic and Exploration, and his articles have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Time, Discover Magazine, Wired, Newsweek, Popular Mechanics, and others. TITLE: The ultimate goal of modern physics is to discover what some scientists call the God Equation, a single short formula that can unify general relativity with quantum mechanics. Otherwise known as the "Theory of Everything," it is the holy grail of physics: a single mathematical formula that explains every physical phenomenon in the cosmos. It is "godly" in its power to explain the creation of the universe and its workings throughout time, and in its unparalleled beauty and simplicity.
About the Author/ I l lustrator Author Residence: New York MICHIO KAKU is a professor of physics at the City University of New York, cofounder of string field theory, and the author of several widely acclaimed science books, including Beyond Einstein, The Future of Humanity, The Future of the Mind, Hyperspace, Physics of the Future, and Physics of the Impossible. He is the science correspondent for CBS This Morning and host of the radio programs Science Fantastic and Exploration.

Stampede Gold Fever and Disaster in the Klondike Brian Castner A gripping and wholly original account of the epic human tragedy that was the great Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-98. One hundred thousand men and women rushed heedlessly north to make their fortunes; very few did, but many thousands of them died in the attempt. In 1897, the United States was mired in the worst economic depression that the country had yet endured. So when all the newspapers announced gold was to be found in wildly enriching quantities at the Klondike River region of the Yukon, a mob of economically desperate Americans swarmed north. Within weeks tens of thousands of them were embarking from western ports to throw themselves at some of the harshest terrain on the planet--in winter yet--woefully unprepared, with no experience at all in mining or mountaineering. It was a mass delusion that quickly proved deadly: avalanches, shipwrecks, starvation, murder.
Upon this stage, author Brian Castner tells a relentlessly driving story of the gold rush through the individual experiences of the iconic characters who endured it. A young Jack London, who would make his fortune but not in gold. Colonel Samuel Steele, who tried to save the stampeders from themselves. The notorious gangster Soapy Smith, goodtime girls and desperate miners, Skookum Jim, and the hotel entrepreneur Belinda Mulrooney. The unvarnished tale of this mass migration is always striking, revealing the amazing truth of what people will do for a chance to be rich.
NARRATIVE NONFICTION AS A DISASTER MOVIE--WITH ALL THE CAN'T-LOOK-AWAY POWER OF THE GENRE: Avalanches, shipwrecks, scurvy, gunfights, starvation, drowning, freezing to death, robberies, lethal swindles; so many ways to expire in the Yukon--and that is just for starters. YES, TRULY UNFORGETTABLE CHARACTERS: The names alone tell the tale. The miner Lying George Carmack; the Indian Skookum Jim; Dudley Do-Rightish Canadian Mountie Samuel Steele; maximum boss of Dawson gangster Soapy Smith; mistress of every sort of diversion a miner might crave Belinda Mulrooney; master conman John Healy; angel of mercy Mother Anna DeGraf; Jack London, who decided that writing beat cold, isolation and scurvy as a way to earn a living. AND WOMEN GET THEIR DUE IN THIS TALE: While some of it is far from pretty (see showgirls and prostitution), many women traveled with the men and made their exertions possible; others (Belinda Mulrooney for one) made a pile for themselves.

Hour of the Witch A Novel Chris Bohjalian A young Puritan woman--faithful, resourceful, but afraid of the demons that dog her soul--plots her escape from a violent marriage in this riveting and propulsive historical thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Flight Attendant. Boston, 1662. Mary Deerfield is twenty-four-years-old. Her skin is porcelain, her eyes delft blue, and in England she might have had many suitors. But here in the New World, amid this community of saints, Mary is the second wife of Thomas Deerfield, a man as cruel as he is powerful. When Thomas, prone to drunken rage, drives a three-tined fork into the back of Mary's hand, she resolves that she must divorce him to save her life. But in a world where every neighbor is watching for signs of the devil, a woman like Mary--a woman who harbors secret desires and finds it difficult to tolerate the brazen hypocrisy of so many men in the colony--soon finds herself the object of suspicion and rumor. When tainted objects are discovered buried in Mary's garden, when a boy she has treated with herbs and simples dies, and when their servant girl runs screaming in fright from her home, Mary must fight to not only escape her marriage, but also the gallows. A twisting, tightly plotted thriller from one of our greatest storytellers, Hour of the Witch is a timely and terrifying novel of socially sanctioned brutality and the original American witch hunt.

FILM AND TV: The Flight Attendant will land on small screens as a series from HBO Max starring Kaley Cuoco, bringing major attention to this author. The Red Lotus has been optioned as well and is in development.

China The Novel Edward Rutherfurd The internationally bestselling author of Paris and New York portrays the great clash of East and West with his trademark epic style in China: The Novel Edward Rutherfurd has enthralled millions of people with his grand, sweeping historical sagas that tell the history of an iconic place over multiple generations. Now, in China: The Novel, Rutherfurd takes readers into the rich and fascinating milieu of the Middle Kingdom, dramatizing the epoch when the colonial greed of Western powers shattered the stability of the two thousand year-old empire, and the Chinese learned to fight back in ways that echo down to this day. The story begins in 1839, at the dawn of the First Opium War. An English merchant arrives in the restricted port of Canton (Guangzhou), seeking to make his fortune trading opium. But the tide of addiction is decimating the Chinese population -- a young scholar accompanies his Mandarin master on a mission from the Emperor to shut down the trade. Thus begins an epic tale chronicling China's struggle to regain their ancient land and culture from the domination of the Western powers, from the Opium Wars through the Taiping Revolt, the British burning of the Summer Palace, the Boxer Rebellion, the long rule of the Dragon Empress, culminating in the revolution of 1911, when modern China began to form.
We meet a young village wife struggling with the rigid traditions of her people, Manchu empresses and warriors, the powerful eunuchs of the Forbidden City, rapacious English soldiers and earnest missionaries, savvy Chinese pirates and sage philosophers, artists, concubines, scoundrels and heroes.
Rutherfurd chronicles the rising and falling fortunes of members of Chinese, British, and American families, as they negotiate the tides of history. Along the way, in his signature style, Rutherfurd provides a deeply researched portrait of Chinese history and society, its ancient traditions and great upheavals, and China's emergence as a rising global power. We are treated to romance and adventure, battles and intrigues, grinding struggle and incredible fortune. China: The Novel brings to life the rich terrain of this vast and constantly evolving country. From Hong Kong to Beijing to the Great Wall, from the mighty Yellow River to the ancient capital of Nanjing, from the West Lake beloved of poets to the mysterious caves of Guilin, Rutherfurd chronicles the turbulent rise and fall of empires as the colonial West meets the opulent and complex East in a dramatic struggle between cultures and people. Extraordinarily researched and majestically told, Edward Rutherfurd paints a thrilling portrait of one of the most singular and remarkable countries in the world.
