The process of the development of the Latgalian literature has always been hindered by disagreements in several

fundamental questions:

What is the Latgalian literature and which authors belong to it?

Where should the Latgalian books be published?

Who is the target audience of the Latgalian literature?

What is the Latgalian literature and which authors belong to it?

Authors writing in Latgalian literary language: L. Rundāne, I. Tārauda, V. Lukaševičs, O. Seiksts, J. Ryučāns

Authors writing in the two languages is considerably greater: A. Rancāne, O. Kūkojs, O. Slišāns and others.

Authors who write on Latgale or looking for the Latgalian identity mainly in the Latvian literary language: L. Muktupāvela, I. Atpile-Jugane, L. Liepdruviete and others.

Recently the new men of letters - E. Dervinieks, I. Ratinīka, J. Čevere, L. Ivanova and others - write in two and three languages, namely alongside with the Latvian literary language or the Latgalian literary language texts in Russian or English appear.

Where should the Latgalian books be published?

Since 1990 books written in the Latgalian literary language are published mainly by the Publishing House of the Culture Centre of Latgale run by J. Elksnis (Rēzekne).

Who is the target audience of the Latgalian literature?

Those who choose to read the texts written in the old orthography, mainly it is the older generation

This orthography is supported by the Catholic church

Predominantly literary works of realism, romanticism and positivism are created in it

From the point of view of genre recollections and biographical works prevail: poetry and stories

Those who prefer the texts written in the new ortho-graphy, mainly they are representatives of the intellectuals of the middle and the young generation (hu-manitarian sciences)

The linguists try to lay the foundation of it

Literary works of modernism and postmodernism are written in it and it allows the Latgalian literature to become part of the common processes of the development of the Latvian literature and the European one

Conclusions

In Latgale the students have become more active and a lot of educational activities are organized to the effect of emphasizing the Latgalian identity

The two orthography traditions co-exist (the old one and the new one) meaning the splitting both between those who write and those who publish and read

Eistu latgali, Pōvulu Mīzi, īsauc obligatajā kara dī nastē.Latvijas armijā 1934.godā. Seržants jau pyrmajā reitājaunkareivus nūstota īryndā un kotram prosa, kai jō sauc.Myusu Pōvuls skali sauc:

- Mīzis.- Es naprosu, kū tu darēji, bet kai tevi sauc! – skaņ

Eistu latgali, Puovulu Mīzi, īsauc obligatajā kara dīnastē Latvejis armejā 1934.godā. Seržants jau pyrmajā reitā jaunkareivus nūstota īryndā i kotram prosa, kai juo sauc. Myusu Puovuls skali sauc:

- Mīzis. Es naprosu, kū tu dareji, a kai tevi sauc! – skaņ

borga seržanta pamuoceiba.
