The Kinard Leader March 2013 Habit 5: Synergize
Principal’s Corner PASS Writing Tests
Our third, fourth, and fifth graders will take the Palmetto Assessment of State
Standards (PASS) writing tests on March 19th and 20th. It is very important that students attend
school on these two days and arrive to school on time. Students also need to get a good night’s
sleep and eat a good breakfast. Students should not bring any electronic devices to school on
these days to include items such as cell phones, pagers, beepers, headphones, stop watches,
hand-held devices, or photographic devices. Our teachers and students have been working hard
all year to prepare for these tests and we know they are going to do well.
The PASS language arts, math, science, and social studies tests will be given on
May 7, 8, 9, and 10. More information will be forthcoming concerning these tests at a later date.
Please call Kinard Elementary School at (803) 810-8700
or email [email protected].
Dates to Remember
Title I News
Thursday, February 21st was 1st grade's Title One night (Lovin on Some Read-ing). We invited parents in to our classrooms to learn about the 8 reading strategies we use with our students during guided reading. We use these strate-gies to help our students when they get "stuck" on a word while reading. We re-viewed with parents and students by playing a bingo game based on these strate-gies. First grade students received a book from scholastic and a bookmark to take home. Refreshments were also available to the parents and students!
Eagle Eye- Look at the picture for clues
Lips the Fish- say the first sounds and read & say it again
Stretchy Snake- stretch the word out and put sounds together
Chunky Monkey- Look for word chunks or word parts
Skippy the Frog- skip the word, read to the end, hop back and read it
Tryin Lion- try to re-read and try a new word
Helpul Kangaroo- ask for help after you have tried all the other strategies
Flippy the Dolphin- try the other vowel sound

Dear Parents,
The month of February was truly “lovely”. Our spotlight on character emphasized cooperation,
which is working with others for everyone’s benefit. Relative to the Leader in Me, students were able to see
that cooperation and synergizing are synonymous. Synergizing means valuing other people’s strength and
learning from them; getting along well with others including those who are different from us; working well
in groups; and, seeking out other people’s ideas because by teaming with others we can create better solu-
tions as opposed to what we can do individually. All grades levels viewed a video clip from United Stream-
ing entitled, “Let’s Get Along: Nice things Kids Can Do.” The video shared strategies students can use to
make and sustain friendships, which include taking turns when playing with others and problem solving
techniques. Grades Pre-K through second played a game called “Scratch My Back.” In this game, children
played bears in Honey Hollow. These bears have an itch represented by a piece of masking tape right in the
center of their backs. Students tried removing the tape themselves, however unsuccessfully. Synergizing
with a partner, the Honey Bears’ itch was scratched.
The upper grades participated in three teamwork challenges: airplane challenge, escape challenge,
and the puzzle challenge. In the airplane challenge, students were to use five sheets of paper to create one
great paper airplane. The team whose airplane flew the farthest won the challenge. Secondly, the puzzle
challenge consisted of students synergizing to complete a puzzle. The team with most of the puzzle com-
pleted after a set time won this challenge. Finally, the escape challenge involved the students getting two
sheets of chart tablet paper. All teams were to stand on one side of the room. By standing on only the chart
paper and not touching any chairs, flooring, desks, or tables, students were to get their team to the other side
of the room with the first team to arrive on the other side winning the challenge. I must say, we had a mag-
nificent time!
In closing and according to John Donne, no man is an island. With that being said, parents please
continue to emphasize with your children the importance of synergizing with others because the benefits of
doing such are limitless!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Y. Coakley,
Guidance Counselor
Mrs. Hall’s Math Classes
Mrs. Hall’s 4th graders are working hard to meet the “Ruler Challenge” which requires them to place
tabs on a ruler matching the value on the tab. This may sound simple, however they go much deeper than
just finding 4 ¾ . Some tabs have decimal values, and the tough ones have improper fractions, such as 34/8,
that have to be converted before the location can be determined. They a sure they can meet the challenge
before the end of February.
The 5th graders have created triangle and quadrilateral hierarchy trees based on the attributes of the
shapes. They enjoyed playing “Secret Shape” and “I Have, Who Has” to practice their understanding. Af-
ter much discussion, it was decided that a square is a picky shape that can go by many names.

our class. He always put first things first in everything he does! He has worked really hard on his handwrit-
ing this year and it looks great. He also has been taking AR tests and earning lots of points for the Roaring
Readers Café. Keep up the great work Lance. We are so very proud of you.

friend to others. She sharpens the saw often by looking for opportunities to be involved in school clubs and
activities. Ali is a true Leader of the Pack and a role model for other students.

strives to do well in all areas of his academics. He participates in class and always listens to others
ideas. He was voted president of Student Council by his 4th and 5th grade peers, he is on Safety Patrol, part
of Juggling Club, and he sings in the Choir. Markus often goes above and beyond to be sure all students feel
listened to and liked. He is a friend to many. Markus is not a follower, but a leader!

Our Pre-K students and Kindergarten students con-
tinue to practice their typing skills and using Tux-
Paint drawing tools and stamps to make math prob-
lems and inserting pictures into their work. Our Pre-
K students have been introduced to Jumpstart Pre-K
and have been exploring the activities in this software
application.
Grade one students continue to use MS
Word to practice their typing skills. They will con-
tinue to work on their upper and lowercase letter typ-
ing, inserting clipart and move existing clipart around
MS Word. Grade two has started a long-term project
using MS Publisher. They will be producing a bro-
chure about the Mid-West which ties in with their
Science and Social Studies curriculum. Grade 3 are
working on a timeline in PowerPoint about the
American Revolution. Grade 4 was introduced to
MS Excel and the value of graphing data.
Our fifth graders completed their African
American Glogster posters and they were stunningly
creative. Many of them have been using the interac-
tive online poster creation application at home.
Grade 5 has also started using MS Excel to explore
the use of computation and graphing in electronic
spreadsheets. We actively use our core subject cur-
riculum as topics to learn about Technology.

100 Days of School with Area and Perimeter!
Math
We enjoyed celebrating the 100th day of school! Creating rectangles and squares with a perimeter and area of 100 was awesome, and Mrs. Hall helped us find all the solutions! We are also beginning our fraction investigations and learning
about the parts of a whole. Where do you see or use fractions at home? Encourage your child to bring in
examples.
Language Arts Our amazing third graders are finishing up their fabulous fables. Next, we will be pre-paring for our PASS writing test. We will continue to work on baggie books for home-work. We are practicing being a close reader, which means really looking deep into a piece of writing to examine it. This will help us be successful writers! After the test in March, we will begin our favorite unit on poetry and figurative language.
Social Studies
We have just finished studying the American Revolution. Please ask your child how the war ended! In March we will begin studying the state and national government. Did you know that they moved the state capital from Charleston to Columbia in 1786.? They thought it would be easier for everyone to get to it. We will also be studying about our local govern-ment and learning what it means to be a good citizen. Near the end of the month we will begin our study of the Civil War.
Science Third graders recently studied fossils. We went on a fossil dig in the Science Lab and then created our own gummy
bear fossils. We are now learning about how slow and rapid processes that
change the surface of the Earth. Next up in Science is land and water
