David Karre Despite our extremely soggy summer, the Third Annual Alan Zdimal Memorial Golf Outing was a huge success! Alan must have been smiling down on us, for sunny skies and warm temperatures were in order for a record turnout! We had 48 golfers (12 teams) and a total of 75 people for our dinner and celebration. The dinner was especially moving as several tributes, especially by Barbara Zdimal, were paid to Alan. After dinner a “Silent Auction” was held for over 35 prizes donated by local merchants. Additional special thanks go to our 24 hole sponsors who, each year, contribute to the success of the event. In all, we raised a record of slightly over $6,000 which will be donated to the Shriners Hospital in Springfield, MA, in Alan’s memory. It is here where Alan served as an Associate Board member. Many thanks go to those who helped bring about the event, including Ill. Andrew Roberts and First Lady Mikki, Ill. Scott Kinne, Ill. Jerry Putman, and Scott and Kim Schwartz who acted as our “Cart boy and girl” for the event. We’re all looking forward to an even bigger and better event next year! Theron and Dawn Banker were recently acknowledged for their generous giving to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia. The Philanthropic Society at the hospital honors major living donors and deceased benefactors who give contributions or bequests to support the hospital’s patients and their medical care, regardless of the patients’ or families' ability to pay.

Both Theron and Dawn have passed away, leaving a portion of their estate to the hospital. Theron was a Shriner and a member of the Legion of Honor at Kalurah Shrine in Endicott, New York. He was also a Past Master of Blue Stone Lodge #338 in Hallstead, Pennsylvania.

Their primary residence was in Great Bend, Pa., but they also had homes and spent much of their time in Forestport, New York and Ocala, Florida. Theron served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Dawn worked at Singer Link, and Theron later worked at IBM in Endicott for 30 years. He later opened his own business, Custom Machining, Inc., in Great Bend.

Every Philanthropic Society donation or bequest at Shriners Hospitals for Children is honored by a separate wood plaque permanently placed on the donor recognition wall in the hospital. The individual plaque features a laser engraved, personalized inscription commemorating the contribution.

Shriners Hospitals for Children changes lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education. Through generous donations and bequests, such as the Bankers’ contribution, the health care system provides advanced care for children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and relies on the generosity of donors. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. For more information about their mission, the care they provide, or to make donation please visit www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/Philadelphia

Kalurah Shriners Celebrate Shriners International Awareness Day at the All Masonic Family Clambake June 6, 2021 was a beautiful day in the Southern Tier as Masons, Nobles, families, and friends all came together for our annual family clambake. This year’s clambake fell on the same day as Shriners International Awareness Day. The food was never ending and it was delicious! Many Nobles, and their friends donated to our basket raffles and bought many 50/50 tickets. We had many visiting Shriners from some of our neighboring Shrine Centers including two current Potentate’s who came to celebrate with our Potentate, Ill. Andrew Roberts. On June 6, 1876, the Imperial Council, the original governing body of the Shriners Fraternity as founded. To commemorate this important event, Shriners International has declared June 6th as Shriners International Awareness Day.

Rewriting Their Stories By Shriners Hospital for Children – Springfield Mike adopted his son, Nick, when Nick was 16. Nick has severe dystonia, a form of cerebral palsy marked by involuntary muscle contractions and movements that affect his entire body. He uses a wheelchair and is nonverbal. “But he can understand what you’re saying,” Mike said. Nick receives physical therapy, occupational therapy and orthotics (for hip dislocation), and bracing for scoliosis at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Springfield.

The next great adventure After his adoption, Nick joined BFit, the hospital’s summer biking program for patients with neuromuscular conditions. “He was really tuned in with what he was doing,” said Mike. From there, a thrill-seeker was born “BFit is what started it all.” Mike looked for other adaptive activities that Nick could take part in to live life without limitations. So far, Mike and Nick’s physical therapist have found ways for Nick to go horseback riding, ziplining, rock climbing and water skiing. “There’s nothing we’ve tried that he doesn’t like. I think you’re just limited by your own imagination,” said Mike. Mike said skydiving might be next on the list. “I’m always looking for our next great adventure.” This article was also featured in the Summer 2021 Issue of Leaders in Care Magazine (our system-wide publication). https://pub.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/rewriting-their-stories/

Noble Ken Nixon passed away at the age of 91. He was raised a Master Mason on January 28, 1965 and created a Noble of the Shrine on May 5, 1971 – a 50-year Shriner! A true brother, a true Noble, and a true gentleman. Please keep Ken’s family in your thoughts and prayers. In Memoriam Ill. Charles Henneman

Illustrious Sir Charles R. Henneman died at sunrise, June 20, 2021. He was a Life Permanent Contributing Member, created May 15, 1971, a 50-year Shriner. A 60-year Master Mason with Round Hill Lodge, he was raised March 13, 1961. Chuck was proudly a Mason, sponsored by his father Earl and cousin Russ Henneman in 1961. He then moved on to the Kalurah Shrine, working his way up the chairs to become Illustrious Potentate 2000, our centennial year. Chuck loved being involved in every part of being a Shriner especially events that brought a smile to the children's' faces, the Shrine Circus and Easter and Christmas parties. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Joyce. Please keep the Henneman family in your thoughts and prayers during this time of loss.

Hospital Transportation Driver coordinator, High Priest and Prophet, Noble Joe Peters is looking for more drivers. All patient transport vehicles have been supplied with cleaning kits from Shriner’s Hospital Springfield. Please reach out the Noble Joe Peters or the Recorder, Ill.
