To the Class of 2020:

The spirit of commencement has always been joyous yet reflective, triumphant yet serious. This year is no different. Over the past weeks, you have demonstrated why we celebrate your graduation and why we take serious note of your achievements. You have spent years at Juilliard delving into the art of generating shared experiences, and in the last semester you have developed ways to continue to do so, despite our separation. It is in your very practice to create energy and excellence no matter the circumstance, and in this time, that ability is particularly essential and marks your success as students and, now, graduates.

Amid the uncertainty of this moment, I urge you to continue forging this path. I ask you to embrace the spirit of celebration today and take the challenges of this time as fuel for your personal ingenuity and participation because you have accomplished something extraordinary. At Juilliard, you have not only contributed to the richness of your own artistic development and lives but have devoted yourselves to the craft of togetherness—to the network of mutuality which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. termed our interdependence. Your work as artists asks us to come together, to share, and to connect. Now, more than ever, we see that work’s true importance; it is a superpower that I hope is ever magnified. Never stop exploring the breadth of your ability to unite.

As we celebrate your graduation, we also recognize those who brought you to this milestone. We thank the families, mentors, and friends, always remembering that none of us does anything alone. On behalf of our students, I want to also thank the entire Juilliard community for its flexibility, support, and dedication to excellence. In difficult times, we do well to not focus on what may be missing but to revisit and reaffirm our values with renewed commitment. Today, we have our belief in art, our community, and the inspiring accomplishments of the Class of 2020.

Let these accomplishments radiate outwards, making them the bedrock of your connection to the world. Class of 2020, I hope you feel the energy from myself and all of us at Juilliard. Congratulations! Today is yours, and tomorrow awaits your powerful voices, bright minds, and collective hope.

Onward!

The Juilliard School offers students the opportunity to pursue their studies in either degree or non-degree curriculum tracks, distinguished from one another by the proportion and distribution of studies outside the major field.

Undergraduate degree programs include a rich complement of liberal arts in addition to the focused technical and repertory studies of the major discipline. For Dance and Drama majors, the augmented track culminates in the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, and for majors in Music, the degree of Bachelor of Music. Non-degree tracks for dancers, actors, and musicians lead to the award of Diploma.

Graduate degree programs in Music include the Master of Music degree, which, in addition to focused performance studies, requires a prescribed number of seminars in historical and analytical subjects; and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree, the ultimate and most highly advanced credential awarded by Juilliard (described more fully on page 8).

The Master of Fine Arts degree in Drama includes a rigorous core curriculum in actor training as well as a sequence of graduate seminars delving into advanced topics relevant to the profession. Non-degree programs for graduate majors in Music include the Graduate Diploma and the Artist Diploma. The Graduate Diploma, a master’s-level track for composers and performing musicians, exists for those students who prefer to concentrate exclusively on advanced technical and repertory studies. For young artists at the pre-professional level, the Artist Diploma program offers studies in five different disciplines—in Music: Jazz Studies, Opera Studies, Performance, and String Quartet Studies; and in Drama: Playwriting.

C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellows Program

Candidates for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Juilliard School have completed a rigorous regimen of studies, performance projects, and examinations over a two- to five-year period of enrollment. A generous endowment grant from the C.V. Starr Foundation has made it possible for these students to pursue their resident studies on full-tuition scholarships. In addition to specified courses in history and practice, research methods, style criticism, and advanced analysis, requirements include, for performers, three public recitals; for composers, the equivalent of one full-length concert of their own works; and for all candidates, the presentation of a lecture-performance and the passing of comprehensive oral and written examinations. Candidates must also prepare and defend a doctoral dissertation displaying original research into a musical subject. Dissertation titles for year 2020 graduates are as follows:

Duanduan Hao, Piano“L’Ange du Cocasse, Monsieur Croche, and the Velvet Gentleman: The Humorous Aspects in Solo Piano Music of Emmanuel Chabrier, Claude Debussy, and Erik Satie” Patrick Kreeger, Organ“Impressions of Spirituality and Mortality in the First Set of Brahms’ Chorale Preludes, Op. 122: A Final Outlook on the Divine”

Accelerated BM/MM Program

Those who are accepted into the highly selective Accelerated Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Program complete both the bachelor’s and master’s degree requirements in five years. To be considered for the program, students are required to be ahead in the bachelor’s curriculum for their majors with excellent grades in both classroom and performance-related activities. They must also audition for the master’s program and be accepted by the departmental faculty during their third year of undergraduate studies.

Academic Honors

The Juilliard School is pleased to recognize seven students who are graduating with Academic Honors. This program is designed for exceptional undergraduate students who wish to enhance their scholarly activities. Honors courses provide students with the opportunity to develop additional skills practiced in the core curriculum, such as critical thinking, selecting sources for analysis, and learning methodologies used by scholars in various disciplines. Students who successfully complete the program receive the citation “with Academic Honors” on their transcripts and diplomas.
