U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin Visits Living Faith

In early May, Senator Tammy Baldwin spent an hour in the Living Faith building. Repre-sentative Cory Mason asked if he could hold a meeting at Living Faith so that she could visitone of our AIM Now classrooms. Following her tour, several community leaders spoke toSenator Baldwin concerning an application that had been placed with the department ofHousing and Urban Development that would designate Racine as a Promise Zone. Thatdesignation gives Racine special opportunity to receive funding to help people in poverty.

The senator was most personable and expressed the joy of having the “music of children ’s voices ” in ourmidst. Representative Mason was very appreciate of our willingness to host the meeting. Living Faith wasroundly praised for our work in the community.

Stitchers of Blessings

It is hard to believe that our prayershawl ministry is celebrating its tenthanniversary this month. When OurSavior ’s rst gathered together in2006 and Atonement in 2007, none ofus could have anticipated how far reaching ourministry would be or how much we would beblessed in return. In these ten years, we have given 1,076 shawls topeople who are experiencing life altering eventssuch as on -going medical procedures, other illness-es, surgery, loss of a loved one, loneliness. Some-times we make a shawl with a speci c person inmind; most times we don ’t know who the recipientwill be. We pray as we create. They are a gift fromthe whole congregation as stated in the card thataccompanies each shawl:‘ We hope that when you wrap this shawl around you,you will feel surrounded and warmed by the love ofGod and this congregation and the knowledge that youare not alone. ”

We also give shawls to celebrate joyous eventssuch as births, milestone birthdays and anniver-saries, weddings, and graduations.

There has been an ever widening circle of giving aswe have expanded our ministry by providing hats, mittens and scarves to HALO, Knapp School, Toysfor Tots, Women ’s’Resource Center, The Hospital-

ity Center and The Food Pantry. Wesent shawls to Virginia in the wake ofthe shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007and knitted hats, mittens and scarvesto Japan after the earthquake there in2011.

We made hats, blankets and bandages for GlobalHealth Ministries, layettes for HALO, hats for TheVeterans Home in Union Grove, lap robes andshawls for the Veteran ’s Hospital in Madison, bap-tismal blankets for Emaus and our own baptismalbaskets, hundreds of pocket prayers shawls andover 500 dishcloths for our soap dispenser projectlast year. We regularly give shawls to All Saints andAurora Hospitals.

More than thirty ve women have participated inour ministry, some working at home and otherscoming to the meetings on the rst and third Tues-

days in the Education Room. The fellowship weshare and the bond of friendship that has beenstrengthened has been a blessing to all the partici-pants.

We are grateful for yarn that has been gifted to us,for the nancial support from Our Savior ’s Founda-tion, congregation members, and two Thrivent Ac-tion grants which have allowed us to continue tobuy yarn and supplies. We look forward to manymore years of reaching out to our congregation,

community and beyond with tangible proof of ourlove, prayers and concern.

We expressed our thanks and appreciation for them and whatthey do. There were lots of goodies for them to enjoy. It went well andthe workers were happy with our visit. We were given a tour and wewere shown a little of what they do. They do a lot more than teach peo-ple how to read; things like how to manage a bank account, use money,go shopping, go to the doctor's of ce, etc.

Stay tuned for more opportunities in the future to help with other Ministries of Encouragement, where wegive our thanks and appreciation to those who serve others and usually are out of the limelight or don'tget thanks and appreciation. Our visits are short but meaningful.

Thrivent Action Teams: Apply for an Action Grant Project for 2016

So far we have had three grants for 2016; one for the community meal, the food pantry, and one for theStitchers of Blessings. Thank you!!

A new year is here and all Thrivent members are eligible fortwo Thrivent Action Grants! Since the dissolution of thechapter system for Thrivent, monies are now being seededout for service projects and fundraisers through individual

Thrivent members. This could be very helpful for manygroups and projects around Living Faith and in the community. You could use the seed money to do many things: purchase materials for the Quilters or the Stitchers ofBlessings or the Child Care Center. Or you could lead a service project to purchase and sort food for theFaithworks Food Pantry or purchase light bulbs for the sanctuary. Just think of a fundraiser or small pro- ject you might like to do yourself or with a couple other people. Or maybe you are part of something com-ing up that is already in place, such as the Cookie Walk.

Each Thrivent member can apply for two projects a year. This is a win -win offer that is not to be missed. The process is very simple and can be done online. If you are tech savvy, just log on to your account withThrivent and click on ‘my Thrivent ’and then ‘action teams ’and it will tell you what to do. If you need help I

am willing to help you through the process – we can even do it in my of ce. Thank you, Pastor Denise

Diane Thygeson

Diane, the daughter of Bob and MarilynThygeson, is a lifelong member of thechurch. She was baptized and con rmedas a member of Atonement Lutheran

Church. She is the youngest of two chil-dren. Her sister Karen lives in Pennsylva-nia.

Diane has been seen and heard around the churchfor years. As a child she was a member of the Chil-dren ’s Choir and as a teen served as an acolyte. Asan adult she has sung with the Senior Choir and cur-rently sings with Selah, the Living Faith West praiseband.Diane participated in the ELCA ’s two year diakoniaprogram, and was part of the 2012 graduating class.(If you’d like more information about diakonia, please talk to her or any other diakonia graduatesfor more information.)

She has served the church as a youth team advisor/ chaperone. After spending a few years as a volun-teer and then the assistant site coordinator ofAtonement ’s Neighborhood Camp, she took over

the reins from Monica Miller, and nowserves as the Site Coordinator.Having spent many years in corporate Hu-man Resources departments, workingwith children was a huge change in direc-tion, but is one that Diane truly enjoys. Inaddition to working with the children inthe Living Faith neighborhood, she has

worked for the past ve years on the staff of EASY,the afterschool program at Emaus ELCA.

Volunteering for the last eight years as administra-tor for the Atonement, now Living Faith, Facebookpage, she became the newsletter editor in 2014,evolving with the church from the Chimes Messen- ger to The Journey . When not working, you are likely to nd Diane andher dog, Wren, out on long walks. She has found alove for walking in local 5k events. Speed doesn ’tde ne the walker, and her dedication has includedsuccessful completion of the Avon 39: The Walk toEnd Breast Cancer.Diane ’s faith has gotten her through the ups anddown in life, and she encourages everyone to “Bestill and know …” (Psalm 46:10)

Think SCRIP for Father s Day

Whether Dad likes a great steak, would appreciate some new tools, would love a family excursion to the movies, or something altogether dif-

ferent, we have Scrip for that. Order your Scrip by 9 A.M. on June 14th

,and you can still get it in time for Father ’s Day.

Graduation parties are in full swing!! You can use Scrip to get a gift for that special graduate and helpour church continue its ministries at the same time. Whether you ’re buying them a new Dell computer, getting them something fun, or stocking up on supplies for a college dorm room, there are Scrip cards forover 100 retailers available.

SCRIP TIP: A coordinator for ano ther prog ram submitted the fo llowing tip to Great Lakes Scrip: “ I re-cently encouraged our families to use scrip to purchase gas. Skimmers, which steal credit card numbers, havebeen found at many gas stations. If I use a gift card to pay for gas, I don ’ t have to worry about my credit cardnumber being stolen. ”

See Dick Langlois at the Scrip table before the 9:15 service and at coffee hour, call Karin Langlois at 672 -0635, or email Karin at [email protected] to order your SCRIP. Those of you attending our WestCampus can also get order forms from June Klingbeil. We keep a limited inventory of popular cards instock. Cards that are ordered by 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday are usually available by Thursday afternoon by ar-rangement with Karin Langlois or on the following Sunday.

Keep Saving A.I.M. Now needs your UPC sWe did it! We earned all 1,250 bonus points from the Spring bonus collectionsheet. Now we ’re busy preparing a submission that will earn double points. Please turn in your UPCs as soon as possible. Thanks again!

REMEMBER: Campbell’s has announced that, after 43 years, they are wind-ing down the Labels for Education program. Since we are a registered school with the program, we haveabout another year and a half to participate. But, the number of participating products will slowly dwindle. So, PLEASE continue to send in your UPCs & caps so we can get as much bene t from this program as wecan in the time left.

Turn in what you ’ve collected by reusing an envelope or baggie, marking it “Child Care, ” and putting it inthe offering plate. If you happen to be going to the church of ce, you can also turn them in there.
