CONDITIONS OF SALE

The highest bidder shall be the buyer. In the event of any dispute as to the bidding in respect of any lot, that lot may be offered again at the discretion of the auctioneer whose decision shall be absolute and final.

The auctioneer has the right -(i) to refuse any bid;(ii) to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion;(iii) to place a reserve on any lot;(iv) to place a bid or bids on behalf of the seller;(v) to withdraw any lot from sale;(vi) to require a successful bidder to pay forthwith the whole or any part of the purchase price. The auctioneer acts as the agent of the seller and neither he nor the seller shall be responsible for any defects or faults in any lot or for any errors of description or for genuineness or authenticity of any lot and no compensation shall be paid in respect of same.

From the time of lot being sold, such lot will be the responsibility of the buyer.

Successful bidders are required to pay for purchases immediately on completion of sale unless otherwise arranged.

All intending buyers are required to register for a bidding number prior to auction commencing. Subscribers can use their permanent bidding number. We reserve the right to ask for identification if you are a first time client of International Art Centre.

Each lot shall be paid for and removed at the buyers expense by no later than 4pm Friday 1st March 2013 unless otherwise arranged failing which the auctioneer and/or the seller shall have the right to forfeit any deposit paid by the buyer and to resell the lot either by public or private sale and any deficiency on costs of resale shall be borne by the defaulting buyer.

No lot may be collected or paid for whilst auction is in progress.

SUBJECT BIDSWhen the auctioneer declares a lot ‘subject’ this means the bid is below the set reserve and is subject to vendor accepting, rejecting or negotiating the bid. International Art Centre will endeavour to make contact with the vendor immediately after sale or the following day. If the bid is accepted, the highest bidder is obligated to make purchase.

ESTIMATESEstimates are provided for each entry and act as a guide only. They are prepared well in advance of sale and are subject to revision at any time. Estimates are based on hammer price and do not include our buyers premium.

Allan Swinton gained sole ownership in 1959. In 1963 the gallery moved to Lorne Street where Swinton created a specialist framing division and exhibition gallery. Under Allan Swinton's committed management the firm prospered. Another move, this time to Albert Street took place in 1973. The original building was demolished to make way for Lorne Towers.

In 1974 Allan Swinton sold his gallery to a collector of maps and three years later it was purchased by Bev and Murray Gow and Bill Hart. In 1980 Murray Gow purchased the Dunham Gallery, Remuera re-naming it John Leech Gallery, Remuera. The city branch of John Leech Gallery operated until 1986 when the building was purchased by Chase Corporation. The gallery relocated to expanded Remuera premises.

In 2002, under the highly successful partnership of John Gow and Gary Langsford, John Leech Gallery returned to Auckland City and its well-known Kitchener Street location, directly opposite Auckland Art Gallery. Over a decade later, having served as the venue for many of this country's most important exhibitions, John Leech Gallery has been renamed Gow Langsford Gallery, and now occupies two central Auckland sites.

A Director's decision to re brand and focus on International and Contemporary New Zealand art, affords a unique opportunity to acquire works from the collection of Auckland's historic John Leech Gallery.

John Leech Gallery Collection - 27 February 2013

The opening of John Leech Gallery in 1855 was heralded by the following announcement in Auckland’s Southern Cross newspaper:

John Leech respectfully announces to the inhabitants of Auckland, that he has commenced business in High Street, opposite the Wesleyan Chapel as carver, gilder, picture framer and looking glass manufacturer. Having had considerable experience in the above-named branches, he is quite confident of giving the most perfect satisfaction to those who might favour him with an order.

John Leech had emigrated to Auckland from Manchester via Sydney. In 1866 he moved his business to Shortland Street, then considered to be the finest of locations. It was here that artists such as Charles Goldie, Gustavus von Tempsky, Alfred Sharpe and J.B.C. Hoyte met and displayed their work. John Leech Gallery operated from these premises until 1963.

Following its founder's death in 1879, the venture continued to flourish under the management of John’s son Harold. It was during his lifetime that the honour of using a royal crest was granted. Harold Leech died in 1945 and the following year Allan Swinton, Gilbert Meadows and Howard Newcomb purchased the gallery.

Figures with Umbrella, London c.1915 is a quintessential Mclntyre streetscape. While the brush work is fluid, the composition is refined and stylised, and a delicate precision lends Figures with Umbrella, London a quiet confidence.

Like many successful painters of his age, Raymond Mclntyre left New Zealand as a young adult and made Europe his home. From 1909 to his death in 1933 he lived in London, where he was actively engaged with the contemporary trends in European Art which he had found inaccessible from New Zealand. In London he began a period of intensive study and painting and exhibited frequently over the next decade, particularly at the Goupil Gallery Salon, London’s leading international gallery at the time. His work was accepted into the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in 1924 and he ceased to exhibit his work publicly in 1926.

The two figures in the foreground are constructed in careful greys and although they are the subject of this work, McIntyre’s primary concern is in the design and formal relationship within the image. Subtle tonal contrasts and exquisite brushwork create a deeply elegant work.

Reference:Arrangement of Jugs (1938) is a lively and buoyant still life by renowned painter Frances Hodgkins. The edition of lithographs is Hodgkins’ only surviving print and was commissioned in 1936 by the London-based publisher Contemporary Lithographs Ltd as part of a venture to supply a wider audience with quality and affordable original works of art. Arrangement of Jugs is from the suite of fifteen prints by different artists launched in 1938, one of which was purchased by the British Museum.

Although she had not worked with lithography before Hodgkins was praised at the time for her fresh and innovative use of the medium and she herself ‘found it interesting and remunerative as a sideline to other works’. (Kapiti Treasures, Janet Bayley (Edt.l, Mahara Gallery, 2010, p. 36)

Moving increasingly away from traditional modes of representation in her works, some objects in Arrangement of Jugs are pared back to their most essential formal elements or depicted through abstract bodies of colour. Essentially disregarding any hierarchy within the objects Hodgkins has employed several perspectives within a single composition giving the effect that some objects appear to float freely in space. The ethereal quality of the abstract forms combined with the objects depicted more literally adds dynamism and vivacity to the work.

The simplified outlines of objects and bold areas of colour in Arrangement of Jugs are typical of Hodgkins’ approach to colour and form in the mid to late 1930s and relate strongly to two known watercolours of almost identical titles, Still Life (c.1937) and Arrangement of Jugs (c.1937) suggesting that they may have been working drawings for the lithographs.

Recent research suggests this is Alfred Sharpe’s interpretation of the dramatic scene in Antarctic waters on 6 February 1838. The two ships depicted are the French corvettes l’Astrolabe et la Zélée. The Astrolabe is shown packed in by ice but the Zélée is also trapped. Zélée is shown about mid-right. The expedition was under the command of Dumont d’Urville a talented French mariner who had visited New Zealand twice before and he was about to make his third visit. He was a daring commander and is known for his skill in taking the Astrolabe through French Pass, NZ, in an earlier Pacific voyage. Very briefly the background to the voyage was that in 1836 Dumont d’Urville presented a proposal to the French authorities suggesting an expedition to the Pacific. King (or Emperor) Louis-Philippe was very interested in the idea and suggested the addition of a probe into Antarctic waters.

After a long voyage, on February 2, 1838, the ships were sailing southwards in search of Antarctica. Within 48 hours they came upon an ice field. D’Urville followed it westwards and entered an inlet in the ice with Jacquinot, on the Zélée close behind. It was an unwise plan as during the night the ice cracked and crunched and by morning the channel had closed behind the ships. Men climbed down onto the ice to tie ropes to the floes; those who remained on board hauled on them to move painfully forward, while others tried to push the ice aside with picks, pincers and pickaxes. It took five days to break free from the ice. During the process a number of the crew suffered from frostbite, including all three surgeons. Eventually they landed on Weddell Island.

Dumont d’Urville spent eight more months exploring southern waters. He then headed for Hobart and then sailed on to New Zealand; after anchoring for a few days at the Auckland Islands, he sailed north off the east coast of New Zealand. November 6, 1840, the two ships entered the harbour at Toulon. They had been away three years and two months. A decade later an official account of the voyage was published showing two similar works.
