THE J. BINFORD WALFORD SCHOLARSHIP IN ARCHITECTUREAND RELATED AREAS

BACKGROUND OF SCHOLARSHIP

Established in 1979 by the will of the late Aurelia B. Walford, these scholarships are awarded annually to majors in art history, historic preservation, or studio art who have stated career goals in architecture or related endeavors. A complete description of the this scholarship can be located in the Art and Art History Handbook available on the University of Mary Washington website.

Scholarships are available on a competitive basis to cover tuition and fee charges only as the Scholarship can be applied to the student's account. Scholarships may be used for academic year costs while enrolled in University of Mary Washington courses. Additionally, smaller scholarships are available for summer courses or programs that address architectural issues or practice.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

a) Applicants must have earned at least 60 academic credits at the time of application. b) Have declared art history, studio art or historic preservation as a major with plans for

advanced study in architecture or employment, which is architecture oriented; c) Have attended the University of Mary Washington for at least one academic year

prior to application for this scholarship; d) Have achieved a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.00 (4.00 scale) and a cumulative

G.PA. in the major program of at least 3.2 (4.00 scale).

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

a) Applicants for this scholarship must complete a cover sheet available from the Department of Art and Art History Office, Melchers 217, no later than 5pm on Friday 2 March 2012.

b) Applicants must submit (2) copies of application materials to include a written original short essay (no longer than two pages, double spaced) stating qualifications and interests relative to the scholarship criteria. In the essay, applicants must state their qualifications and interests relative to the scholarship criteria. Additionally, they must address their eligibility and the specific course/program/project that will serve their educational goals in architectural history, historic preservation, or design. Additional supporting material (bibliography, endnotes, goals, etc.) related to the scope of their intended project or studies beyond the two-page essay may be attached. The essay must be typed and presented as hard copy. Clear prose and statement of intention, accuracy of information, and good writing skills are expected and will affect reviewers' decisions. The cover sheet must be attached to the essay. One copy should be given to the Department of Art and Art History, the other copy should given to the Department of Historic Preservation.

c) The final selection of scholarship recipients is made by a Scholarship Committee that includes faculty representation from the Department of Art and Art History and the Department of Historic Preservation.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

For regular academic year: a) Applications must be submitted to Professor JeanAnn Dabb, Department of Art

and Art History, Melchers 217 no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012. Applicants must submit (2) copies of application materials and cover sheet.

b) Recipients of the scholarships will be announced by the end of the spring semester.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP

Each J. Binford Walford Scholarship was awarded in 2011-2012 in the amount of $4,000 per semester. For 2012-2013, similar awards are anticipated.

J. BINFORD WALFORD SCHOLARSHIP SUMMER SESSION STUDY GRANTS

IN ARCHITECTURE AND RELATED AREAS

INTRODUCTION

Summer session study grants are available on a limited basis to qualified, full-time University of Mary Washington majors who enroll in the Departments of Art and Art History or Historic Preservation summer session credit-awarding programs or courses that focus on architectural issues (architectural history, design, and historic preservation, including archaeology). Both study abroad courses/programs and domestic off-campus courses/programs, as well as individual studies, internships, or special studies, may qualify for grant assistance. No non-UMW course/program will qualify even if it could later result in transfer credit.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

a) An applicant must be a declared major in art, art history, or historic preservation.

b) An applicant must have achieved at least a 3.00 cumulative G.P.A. (4.00 scale) in the degree program and at least a 3.2 cumulative G.P.A. in the major program (4.00 scale).

c) An applicant must write an original informational statement of one page, double-spaced, in word-processed hard copy addressing the eligibility of the applicant and how the specific course/program will serve the applicant's educational goals in architectural history, historic preservation, and design. Clear prose will affect the reviewers' decision. Additional supporting material [bibliography, endnotes, internship goals, etc.] relating to the scope of intended projects such as individual studies, special studies or internships may be attached to the one page informational statement where appropriate.

d) Applicant must have a FASFA report on file.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

a) Applicants must request and complete a cover sheet available from the Department of Art and Art History Office, Dupont 306.

b) The coversheet must be attached to the informational statement and submitted to Professor JeanAnn Dabb, Chair, Department of Art and Art History, Dupont 306 no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012. Applicants must submit (2) copies of application materials. One

copy should be given to the Department of Art and Art History, the other copy should be given to the Department of Historic Preservation.

c) All applications are reviewed and evaluated by a faculty member from the Department of Art and Art History and from the Department of Historic Preservation.

AMOUNT OF GRANTS

Summer session study grants may vary each year according to availability of funds and number of awards to qualified applicants. The minimum scholarship amount awarded was $500. For 2012-2013, similar awards are anticipated.
