THE INTERNATIONAL SUNDAY SCHOOLCONVENTION

The first international convention since the official adoption ofgraded lessons for the Sunday School met at San Francisco last June. Some persons expected that there would be a reversal of action or achange of attitude in regard to graded lessons and interest centeredabout the question of extra-Biblical material for the school. As tothe general endorsement of graded lessons there could not be theslightest doubt, and no action was taken looking toward retrogressionhere. The Executive Committee took action on certain questionsplaced before them regarding the work of the Lesson Committee byadopting the answers given below to the questions presented.

QUESTION 1. la the Lesson Committee to confine Itself, hereafter, to the Bible eg theonly.source of all lessons put forth with the sanction and approval of the Lesson Committee?ANSWER. "Yes: it being understood that the words "hereafter * • • put forth" refer tolessons!not yet prepared for promulgation, or the title of which have not yet been announced.',

QUESTION 2. If the Committee is to limit Itself to the Bible In the sense Indicated above. Is the Committee to discontinue in the remaining courses of Graded Lessons now In preparationthe use of all extra-Biblical leBsons as alternative or parallel lessons, in some instances, withthose drawn from the Bible? ANSWER. In the Graded Lesson Courses the suggestion by theLesson Committee (in connection with the lesBon titles based on Biblical test) of the. study of anysuitable character, incident, or other material, is pennlssable; lessons which have been issued orthe subjects of which have been announced by the Lesson Committee shall not be dlsturbeduring the ensuing triennlum, provided that revisions of the same, it made shall be In harmonywith the foregoing."

While this action fails to endorse the principle of the lessondetermination by the pupil's need, it, even with its indefinite terms, leaves the committee much latitude, and publishers more, to preparecourses including extra-Biblical material and calculated to meet allthe needs of the developing Christian life.
