4 11TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF COPTIC STUDIES - 2016

Welcome from Robert W. Schult, President of Claremont Graduate University We are honored to welcome you to the 11th International Congress of Coptic Studies. Our university’s connection to Coptic scholarship and what it teaches us about Christianity dates to the important work of the university’s Dr. James Robinson. Robinson led the crucial effort to finally gather, translate, and edit the manuscripts discovered at Nag Hammadi in the 1940s. With his work and the opening of the university’s Institute for Antiquity and Christianity in 1967, CGU became an important center of Coptic study. Ever since, our university’s relationship to Coptic scholarship has flourished, and with this year’s congress, that relationship grows even stronger. In the pages that follow, you will find a detailed guide to the sessions of this year’s congress, as well as information about local venues of potential interest, and a map to assist you in navigating our campus. Finally, we are thrilled to co-host this major event with the St. Shenouda the Archimandrite Coptic Society under the auspices of the International Association for Coptic Studies. It is a privilege for CGU to enjoy a strong partnership with the IACS and the vital work that this organization oversees. We hope you will enjoy your time here in Claremont. Have a wonderful congress.

Robert W. Schult
