EDITOR’S LETTER

THE INNOVATION |SPRING 2014 2

I am excited to finally complete this

project. I started this almost 5 years ago,

and did not understand what I really had

stumbled upon. This magazine

represents a new generation of

creativity. I have always been passionate

about art, and when I got into

photography I felt it should be more

organized, this idea gave way to the

creation of “The Innovation Magazine”

My vision for this magazine is to give our

generation and others a chance to

express themselves. Our culture is

formed around “connections &

creativity” with social media allowing

people to start businesses, become

entertainers, and pursue their dreams

without so many obstacles.

This Magazine is just another outlet for people to show

their creativity. I especially want to thank all the

individuals who helped me put the magazine together.

Jade Elliot (Editor and Chief) who’s niece Alora Buird is

featured, along with Valencia Boyd, DeAndrea

Dickerson, Jasmine Analyse, & Jennifer Thomas. All of

these Ladies are very unique in the on way. So I

encourage you to read their stories and if you have your

own story you want to tell of your pursuit for happiness,

dream, and/or goals; follow us. I look forward to

working with many more creative & unique individuals

in the future.

God Bless,

Darrin Carter

New generation

The Millennials have changed the way we approach the job industry. Most graduates are leaving College not to find opportunity with a major Corporation, but startups. Stanford just had recently had its less than 300 job fair. Students got an in-depth look at startups with less than 300 employees. Some would say this isn’t the best route to take, but consider working for a startup such as Instagram with only 10 employees. Yahoo purchased them for close to 40 million and each employee got a 6 figure by out. Now with social networks leading the charge in the way people conduct business and even start businesses.

Steve jobs

Most people today carry some type of Apple product. Well for those that don’t know who Steve Jobs is, he is the late creator and innovator of the Apple Inc. He revolutionized the tech world with the release of the IPhone, App store, & IPad. 2006 was a great year for many tech enthusiast, and tech companies. The iPhone changed the way companies approached the cell phone industry. The app store opened doors for developers to create apps that to this day are making many people very wealthy. Now almost a decade later communication has also grown with app development making it easier to connect with people all over the world. Jobs later

died October 5, 2011 from complications of cancer. His Legacy will

Forever live on through apple, connecting bridges and building new ones every day.

Oprah winfrey

One of the most profound women in today’s society came from a very humble beginning. Born in rural town Kosciuska,Mississippi. She would eventually move to Baltimore to host a hit chat show, People Are Talking. She then was recruited by Chicago TV Station to host a morning show. This is when the world renowned Oprah Winfrey Show was formed, it aired for 25 seasons from 1986 to 2011. She later would launch OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). She has become the world’s first self-made female billionaire, and has empowered so many women to follow their dreams.

Yael Cohen

Founder of the Fuck Cancer movement, in 2009 Yael Cohen’s mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She read every piece of material she could get her hands on. Watching her mom suffer and seeing her father cry for the first time sparked a fire inside her. She created her mom a shirt that said, “Fuck Cancer” meaning (yes I have cancer but no, I won’ go down without one hell of a fight.” Saying, “I am not a patient, I am a survivor” Yael said her mom wasn’t the type to where the word, “Fuck “around but so many people embraced her when they saw the shirt. Their reactions were: People hugged her, high fived

her, wanted to hear her story and share theirs. She did not choose to form a relief fund charity do to her lack of knowledge in cancer research & raising billions of dollars needed to find the cure. So she formed her brand around early detection. This is what saved her mom’s life, and this is where she felt she could make a real impact. Yael said, “ Everything we build is for our community, it’s what they’ve told us they need and what we anticipate they will need and what we anticipate they will need. Beyond education, I wanted community. I wanted to create a space for people to say what they actually felt, not what society told them they should be.

Shawn (Jay-Z) Carter

Hip-hop artist & mogul from Brooklyn, Jay-Z has made his mark on the industry with hit albums and high prized business deals. Coming from a single parent home he knew he had a gift to tell a story through his words. Jay-Z has paved the way for so many artists in the hip-hop world. Creating genres of music for people to enjoy and explore. Shawn Carter grew up in Marcy Projects. Filled with violence and drugs, it was rare for most male’s to get out alive or without being incarcerated. His mother new he was special recalling, “He was the only one who didn’t give me any pain when I gave birth to him, and that is how I knew he was a special child.” His father left him and his mother when he was 11. Knowing he had a mission to accomplish he turned to rap to express his pain. He later teamed up with two friends, Damon Dash and Kareem Burke to found Roc-A-Fella Records. Preparing

for wealth

Only days away from

graduating DeAndrea

(DeDe) Dickerson

celebrates yet another

milestone in her long list

of accomplishments…

Driven from birth by a

very positive family, she

has always believed in

doing whatever she put her

mind too.

While pursuing multiple

business opportunities, she

managed to become very

successful at a young age.

Jewelry selling was her

first venture, which led to

marketing/promoting for

local events while in high

school & college. She

managed to sell over

10,000 plus tickets for

different events and night

clubs in the area.

She Cleary has a

knack for making

things happen, and

happen fast. She is

now taking her

talents to the fitness

world with the

explosion for many gyms

and programs in 2013 she

plans to make her impact

with a company called

Body By Vi, while

maintaining a full time job

with Interim Healthcare.

She has already been

selected as one of the

company’s top promoters

in her region.

She was rewarded with an

all expense trip to Orlando,

FL to meet with other

promoters in the company

from other regions.

Dedication for what you

goes a long way. Ms.

Dickerson is a prime

example of what an

innovative Entrepreneur is.

She continues to raise the

bar for a lot of women. She

has tunnel vision for

greatness and success on

the brain.

The innovation |SPRING 2014 8

1. My most significant

accomplishment thus far

has been graduating from

the University of Alabama

with honors. I've been able

to maintain higher than a

3.3 grade point average

throughout college and I'm

very proud about that.

Being able to multitask has

been one of the greatest

skills that I possess that

allows me to be successful

in all of my endeavors. I

was able to have a social

life and still get all of my

work done.

2. I'm most satisfied when

my family and friends are

happy. I try to be positive

all of the time and bring

happiness to the people

that I love. When they are

happy, I am happy.

3. I actually started

marketing when I was

about 12. My first business

was a jewelry business. I

made jewelry pieces and

brought them to school to

sell. Once I started making

a profit, I invested in

business cards to expand

my business. This mindset

grew into

promoting/marketing

different events around

Birmingham in my teens. I

promoted for parties and

clubs. I probably sold

about $10,000+ in tickets

alone, not to mention VIP

booths and tables that I've

sold. All of this was a

result of marketing via

social media: Twitter and

Facebook to be exact. My

newest venture is selling

Body By Vi. This product

helps people tone up, lose

weight, and be healthy

overall.

This is very rewarding

because I can see my

customer’s results and how

it changes their lives. It

also has changed the lives

of many who are

promoters because of the

financial incentives. My

website for this is

dmdickerson.bodybyvi.com

4. In 5 years I hope to have

obtained my Master's

degree, hold a top

management position in

some company or have

already designed my own

business plan. I want to be

married or at least know

who I'm going to marry by

then. I want to design a

business that will enhance

people's lives, not just help

Page 9: The innovation magazine (glamorous issue)

Success is versatile

The innovation |SPRING 2014 9

in making me financially stable.

5. My first goal is to always put 100% effort

in anything I start out to do. Therefore, I am

likely to succeed and will have no regrets

because I gave it my all. My second goal is

to always think about how my decisions

affect others. Planning and doing a cause

and effect analysis can prevent issues and

delays. Doing these things, and

foreshadowing consequences will ensure

that my plans and strategies coincide with

my goals.

6. One person who I would love to meet is

Tupac Shakur. Tupac inspired me to write

poetry and songs when I was little. Even

though I was young, I learned a lot about

seeing the world through other people's eyes

and understanding their truth. Once you

understand other people, you become open

minded to different ideas, thoughts and

opinions. Staying open minded will allow

you to never think your dreams are too

farfetched. If I would have stayed boxed in,

I would have never had the dreams of

graduating from college, and now being a

successful entrepreneur one day. Even when

these things seemed like they would never

happen, I never let go of my dreams. I know

that through God anything is possible, all

you have to do is believe in yourself and

then others will have no choice but to

believe in you.

7. I want people to believe in themselves. It

irks me when I encounter people that feel as

if they are stuck and can't do anything to

change their destiny. I want people to know

that their future is in their hands and the

only thing that is stopping them from

achieving their goals is THEM. It's

important to never stop dreaming, setting

goals, and growing. Even if it feels like you

have everything, you must never stop

wanting to better yourself.

8. I think I've lived in my whole fantasy-

dream my whole life. No one could tell me

nothing. If I wanted to do something, I did

it. I never let any negative people or

obstacles get in my way. I feel that I'm

living my dream each day because I live life

to the fullest and I never stop striving to be a

better person and helping people. Once I

achieve something, I make another goal to

achieve. It's a process that never stops. My

short term and long term goals are my

dreams. I live life one day at a time trying to

accomplish things that I intuitively feel will

somehow benefit others and myself.

9. My parents are 100% supportive of all of

the things that I want to do. Even if it's not

the best idea, they let me learn from my

mistakes. I appreciate that they raised me to

be independent, loving and caring. I will

surely pass all the wisdom and things that

they've taught me to my children.

Motivated beauty

The Innovation | SPRING 2014 11

The beginning

For most women today, being a mother is a full-

time job. For this mom it’s more than a job, it’s

a way of life. Driven for her passion to succeed

against all odds, Valencia Boyd has truly

defined the meaning of “Motivated Beauty”.

She grew up in the small

town of Montevallo,

Alabama, very well

known around town

for her radiant smile

and involvement in

the community. While in

school, volleyball was her sport of choice, and

she was very dedicated to being the best at it.

Shortly after graduating high school she gave

birth to two beautiful girls. Valencia said, “I

didn’t expect to be a mother at such an early

age”, yet she would not change it for anything.

Overcoming a recent divorce, she has found a

new way to channel her energy and faith.

Now that she has stepped into a new light, she is

one of the top accounting clerks at her job,

starting out as a teller and working her way up at

a very rapid pace. Never having stepped foot in

college, she now holds one of the top positions

at the company. She says, “Anything is possible

when you work hard and give 100%”. Very well

spoken, she encourages many women to stay

humble no matter how hard things may get. A

firm believer in a higher power, Valencia

commands her life with a passion for greatness.

Truly a leader amongst few, she continues to

strive toward her goals of seeing her family

grow and prosper.

Valencia’s interview

1. My most significant accomplishment has to

be having and raising my two beautiful girls. I

had them at the age of 21 and 22. I was young

and didn't know much about being a mother

even though I have such a wonderful mom as a

role model, I just wasn't ready. I honestly didn't

want to have kids until I was 27. Now, I couldn't

imagine my life without them.

2. I became most satisfied in life when I

started wake up every day to my beautiful,

smart, intelligent daughters. Kids are an example

of you, it's all about how you raise them and

teach them and by their actions, I can say I'm

doing a pretty darn good job!

3. I got started being an Accounting Clerk at my

recent job by working hard. PERIOD!! I started

as a teller and when it was time for my

promotion I got options (who gets options

during their promotions?), either to be a Head

Teller or Accounting Clerk. I've never been to

college and I'm proud where I am in my career.

Anything is possible when you work hard and

give 100%. A degree is GREAT but if you can't

put forth hard work and effort, that piece of

paper is NOTHING!!

Page 13: The innovation magazine (glamorous issue)

Motivated beauty

The Innovation | SPRING 2014 13

4. In 5 years, I see myself succeeding

and progressing well in my career and Settled.

5. I have set many PERSONAL goals. I

honestly, Thank God for waking me up and

allowing me to see each day and take my life

day by day. One goal I have is to raise and teach

my girls how to be powerful and strong women.

Don't let anyone tell them they can't do anything

and ALWAYS be treated like a Queen no matter

what.

6. One person I would LOVE to meet is Maya

Angelou. She's what I call a Powerful and

Strong women. She has so much wisdom and is

so humble despite everything she has been

through.

7. I don't want to make in impact on people. I

want to make a Positive impact on my girls and

an impact on myself, so therefore when people

see my girls and I they have nothing but positive

things to say about us!! I just want the people to

know that ANYTHING is possible and if you

have just even a TINY bit of faith or belief in

God, the devil is going to try to take every bit of

that away. You have to keep God first in

everything you do and he will never lead you

down the wrong path.

8. My parents Antonio and LaTresa Kelley and

my sister's Amber and Mikayla stands by me no

matter what I decide in life. They never look

down on me. They will give me their opinions,

but for the most part, anything I want to pursue

or accomplish I have a support team No Matter

What!

Big dreams

When you think of a business

personality, most envision a

person coming from a big

city or very wealthy family.

In this case Jennifer Thomas

is the complete opposite. She

grew up in the small town of

Ohatchee, Alabama. She is

the youngest of three

siblings, with a very

determined personality. Her

attitude propelled her to new

heights, when she graduated

high school in 2005. She

immediately enrolled at

Jacksonville State University.

She majored in Business

management, with her sights

set on graduating in a four

year time span. JSU is ranked

amongst the top 10 business

schools in the nation. Her

classes would start around

8am & end at 3pm. Then she

went to work from 4pm to

10m. Jennifer battled a tough

schedule, but this never

stopped her from achieving

her goals. She says, “I was so

blessed to have a wonderful

job with wonderful people

during my college years!”

The only thing she would

change is the time she didn’t

spend on having fun and

socializing more.

1. My most significant

accomplishment is graduating

from Jacksonville State

University in four years,

while maintaining a high

GPA and being appointed to

the College of Business and

Commerce Deans list. I

earned a Bachelor’s of

Science degree in Business

Management in December

2009.

2. Now is the time that I have

been the most satisfied in my

life.(so far) I just began a

new journey in my life. In the

past year, I have moved to

Birmingham Alabama and

started a new job with a great

company. I am loving the city

life and my new job.

3. Working in Medical Sales.

My new job is as a sales

representative for a lucrative

Medical Publishing

Company. I am looking

forward to accomplishing my

sales goals and beyond. Since

i have started with the

company, I have maintained

high sales and have placed in

the top three sales reps for

each month since I started

with the company.

4.In five years, I would like

to see myself as the top sales

rep in my division and Would

like to see myself

representing my company at

all of our top conferences

with medical doctors from

across the world. I would also

like to return to school and

earn my Maters Degree in

Business Administration.

5. I have set many goals for

myself to achieve that.

1. Networking with my

customers

2. Maintaining high sales

goals monthly

3. Traveling and Working

with my company at our live

conferences

4. Preparing to apply to

Grad School

6. I would love to meet Frist

Lady Michelle Obama. She is

a wonderful first lady and a

great role model for young

women to look up to. She

carries herself with dignity

and confidence. She is a well-

educated woman and strives

to help in communities in

charities and many other

foundations.

7. I would like to have a

positive impact on others. I

want for people to look at me

and say, "She is a woman that

knows where she came from

and knows where she is

going. I want to be that

woman that young girls can

look up too and say, not only

do I want to be like Jennifer

Thomas; I want to be better

than Jennifer Thomas.

8. I was 17 when I decided to

pursue my dream. I left for

college at 17 and I never

looked back. I knew that I

always wanted to study

business at Jacksonville State

University.

9. My parents were very

proud. They have always

encouraged their children to

succeed in every possible

way. They taught me to pray,

have faith, tithe my earnings,

and trust God and know that

he will always provide away

and make all things possible.

*Star power*

From the time she could walk and talk this young

lady, Alora Buird has been a star. Born for greatness

with a voice of an angel, she started using her vocal

cords at the age of 3 years old. She would sing the

Aristocrats, “Everybody wants to be a cat,” until her

Moms head almost fell off. By the age of 5 Avril

Lavigne became her first idol.

As a

fourteen year

old she has

managed to

overcome

some rough

things in her

life and it's

made her a

better person

in the long

run.

"The things

I've been through have helped me learn from other

Peoples’ mistakes instead of making them myself."

This young lady has more strength and

encouragement then most girls her age and is willing

to do anything to help others with their issues.

With God on her side he has given her the gift to

make a huge difference in young teen lives.

Becoming a performer has always been her dream.

Singing and modeling is what she was born to do.

"I've always wanted to do something big with my

life; I've always wanted to be known!

Page 20: The innovation magazine (glamorous issue)

alora’s interview

The innovation |SPRING 2014 20

1.

Probably my most significant

accomplishment as a fourteen

year old would just have to

be overcoming rough things

in my life and letting it make

me a better person in the long

run. Things that I've been

through has helped me in that

I can learn from other

peoples mistakes instead of

making them myself, also I

can relate to people and help

them with their issues. I

know that might not be a

"huge accomplishment" but I

am young and am planning

on accomplishing so much

more and making something

out of my life.

2. Honestly, I'm really happy

right now. I'm just getting

into high school and love it

so far! I'm just really cool

with how everything is

playing out. I'm just

extremely blessed with the

people I have in my life! My

family, my church family,

and my friends keep me in

line and I couldn't be more

thankful for them.

3. I've always wanted to do

something big with my life,

always wanted to be known!

Ever since I could remember

I've always dreamed of being

that person that people look

at and just say "wow",

because of all that was

accomplished in my life

under the circumstances. I've

always loved the idea of

performing for people; I have

so much fun doing it. Also,

modeling is something I

Page 21: The innovation magazine (glamorous issue)

alora’s interview

The innovation |SPRING 2014 21

enjoy more than anything! I

like to say I'm bit of a

goofball so everything I do I

just like to mess around and

laugh, maybe too much

sometimes!

4. In five years I picture

myself in a College

University, I'm not quite sure

which one yet but it's

something that I am requiring

myself to do!

5. This isn't one of those

things that you can just wake

up one day and get done with

it just like that. There is so

much to it and so many steps

that take dedication, time,

and hard work! In this

industry you are going to

need people to be there and

help you through every step

guiding you! I have a goal

that's pretty cliché, but it's to

always be myself and remain

humble, because a bad

attitude can ruin anything and

everything.

6. There are so many people I

would like to meet, but if I

had to pick one it would have

to be Justin Bieber, of course.

Now before you just assume

I'm just a normal teenage

Bieber fanatic I'll explain

why! I don't want to meet

him because he is "so totally

hot", not even the fact that he

sings like an angel, but

because I think he would just

be really cool to hang out

with and he just has an

amazing life story that

inspires me so much.

7. All I ever want to do is

make an impact on people,

through everything I do. I just

want people to know that

they aren't the only ones; I

want them to know they have

someone to relate to. People

need to realize that their

future depends on them, and

what you have been through

can either affect you in a

positive way or negative, but

that's your decision.

8. All I've really done is sing,

It's to the point where I get in

trouble from my teachers

constantly telling me to be

quiet.. I don't even realize

when I'm doing it and it's

quite embarrassing at points...

But I guess you can say I've

always been trying to pursue

this dream I've always had,

but I've never really had an

opportunity to do something

about it until now!

9. My parents really do

support me through things

like this, they look at it as a

good opportunity for me.

Even though my mom lives

12 hours away she still gets

involved and is supports me

which means the world to

me! My daddy who I love

more than anything is very

careful about the music and

modeling industry, I mean I

am his little girl so I don't

blame him! He wants the

best for me and just wants to

make sure I will always be

save and protected. My mom

really encourages me to be

who I am and to always be

comfortable with myself and

to respect myself in

everything I do.

10. I can be contacted

through Facebook, Email,

Instagram, & of course by

phone& text!

NEXT TOP MODEL

The innovation |SPRING 2014 22

The journey

She could easily pass for an exotic

island girl. Her slanted eyes and

defined facial structure suggest a

Jamaican dissent. Growing up

Jasmine Analyse always envisioned

herself becoming Americas Next

Top Model. This thought would

take her so many different routes in

life to accomplish her long-time

goal.

I got a chance to meet Jasmine my

second year of college. She always

has the same vibrant smile on her

face. She definitely had a knack for

bringing people closer together.

Modeling may have been her

primary objective, but she also has

plenty more great qualities.

Jasmine just recently became a

licensed massage therapist. She

originally wanted to become a

nurse, but realized it was more

Jasmine’s INTERVIEW

The innovation |SPRING 2014 23

1.My most significant accomplishment would have to be

realizing something that what I first went to school for

(nursing) was not something that I really wanted to do, and

making a decision to change schools to pursue my license

for massage therapy. I am now doing something that I love

doing!

2. I can't say that satisfied with life. I'm not where I want to

be in life, but I'm getting there. When I get there then I'll be

most satisfied in life.

3. What made me want to start modeling would have to of

been taking pictures all the time. I loved taking pictures and

watching America's Next Top Model for so many years.

4. I see myself in a few magazines, and being a successful

business woman!

5. I've set many goals, but just to name a few my first goal

is to move out of my little country hometown (I love my

town), second get signed, and third do as much work as I

can to put my name and face out there within 2014.

6. One person I would love to meet would be Kimora Lee

Simmons because she has done everything I've wanted to

do from modeling to acting to being a successful business

woman.

7. I would like to show people that with patience, prayer,

and hard work you can make your dreams come true.

8. I was 17 when I decided to pursue my dream. I went to

this seminar but they wanted money so I didn't do it. After I

graduated from high school my best friend and I went to

another one we paid money to get our pictures taken, and

they wanted more money after that to give us exposure. I

didn't do that instead I got on model mayhem and went

from there. I've auditioned for ANTM 4 times since then.

I'm 23 now and it's really all about putting yourself out

there and networking.

9. My parents support everything that I do. They are my

backbone, especially my mom.

The plan

The innovation |SPRING 2014 31

Today Businesses are popping up in many different places

from small startups to online mega companies. Starting a

business has probably been the easiest its every been in

years. To really maximize the opportunity of starting a

business is best to have a solid business plan. This detailed

layout will give you step by step information on how to

create a solid business plan.

Business plan

1. Identify the need your business fulfills

Define the need ( or problem) that your business satisfies

2. Cleary describe how it fulfills this need

This is the place for your mission statement

List the objectives for the actions your business takes to address holes in the

market

(Chances are, other businesses are working to fulfill the same niche, but how

does your business do it better than they do)

3. Recognize how your business is unique

Outline a business model that details the advantages of your organizations, in

order to ascertain how your business will survive

Scrutinize the strengths and weaknesses of your competition as well

Distinguish yourself from the crowd to boost your shot at investment

(36% of surveyed business owners with a business plan obtained investment

capital, only 18% of those without business plans secured it.)

4. Name Your Key Stakeholders

Identify your management team, board, and advisers

Include the details of their-value

5. Know the size of your Market

Analyze the market conditions: how big it is, how much is it growing, how fast is

it growing and what is its profit potential?

6. Know who makes up your Target Market

Your marketing strategies should be clearly aimed at your target market

(if not you are wasting time, effort, and money)

7. Devise ideal Promotional Strategies

Page 32: The innovation magazine (glamorous issue)

The plan

The innovation |SPRING 2014 32

How do you reach that target market?

(Your strategy should include the ideal mediums that speak most to your clients and where they

gather their information.)

8. Breakdown Your Revenue Streams

This Should Include:

i. Pricing

ii. Costs

iii. Margins

iv. Expenses

Page 33: The innovation magazine (glamorous issue)

The plan

The innovation |SPRING 2014 33

Revenue prediction in real terms can actually be detrimental to your plan (as it

often doesn’t meet expectations) but knowing what makes up revenue is

valuable.

9. Budget How Much Money You Need to Get Started and Keep Going

Funding to move your idea to a proof of concept, will typically come from

friends, family, and personal funds.

SBA loans and bank financing are options for modest growth businesses.

Angel investors and venture capitalists will fund rapid growth opportunities

(Whoever is providing your funding will want to see a solid business plan. If you

apply for a SBA loan you’ll need 30% of the funding plus a solid business plan)

(If approved, SBA will loan you up to 70% of what you need to start

10. Create A Plan For Breaking Even

Yes revenue can be tough to predict but create a few different scenarios and

establish the sales required to pay for your expenses and subsequently turn a

profit

If possible, break it down month-by-month for your business “ first two years”

(Create contingencies for positive and negative scenarios)

i. If you hit a rough patch and you don’t have a plan, your business could

slump or even fail

ii. If you see unexpected success your goals may be pushed up significantly

and suddenly you need a new plan.

Overall having a solid Business Plan will give you a chance to open up doors that can propel you to levels

you never thought possible. Take a chance on learning things for yourself and the right things will show

up to help you vision come to life.

Crowd-funding

The innovation |SPRING 2014 34

“Crowd funding is the pooling of funds from passionate people to help make something special happen”

Kickstarter.com

Fundraise.com

Fundly.com

Indiegogo.com

Smaller Goals are More Attainable

Average successful crowd funding campaign is around $7000.00

Average campaign lasts around 9 weeks

Campaigns that can gain 30% of their goal with the first week are more likely to succeed.

Marketing Drives Campaigns

There is a direct correlation between the number of outside links to a crowd-funding campaign

and the success of the campaign.

Social Media is a critical factor in crowd-funding success: for every order of magnitude increase

in Facebook friends the probability of success increases drastically from 9% - 20% - 40%

Demographics of the Crowd

Age – Individuals ages 24-35 are much more likely to participate in crowd-funding campaigns.

Those over 45 are significantly less likely to back campaigns

Gender – Men are much more likely to take a risk on an unknown startup

Income – Those earning over $100,000 per year are the most likely to invest in startups through

crowd funding.

Benefits of Crowd Funding

Less overhead in staff time, processing

Potential reach. Social Media, Email, Peer-to-Peer.

24/7 access via online donation platforms

Opportunity to share a compelling story of impact through multimedia, videos, photos

Crowd-funding

The innovation |SPRING 2014 35

Challenges of Crowd Funding

Planning is more important

than implementation

Tools can be confusing

( If you build it they will come.

Not true) It only works with an

investment of time and

concerted effort

It will not work if you do not

have a compelling story to tell

So How to Do It

Three main Steps

o Planning

o Marketing

o Followup

Campaigns with day-to-day

marketing plans raise 80%

more

o Day10: Update on

Facebook

o Day11: Add a new

reward

o Day12: Post a Thankyou

Campaign Update

Planning

Get Legal

o Just as with other types

of fundraising, online

solicitations must be

registered with the

appropriate officials.

o Check with your state

attorney’s office or secretary or secretary of the state office to find out the

requirements in your state.

o Also if you do online fundraising in states other than your own you may need to register

there as well.

Page 36: The innovation magazine (glamorous issue)

Crowd-funding

The innovation |SPRING 2014 36

Pick a Project

o Specific projects work best

o Crowd Funding does not work for general asks

o Why this project?

o Why now?

o Why are you asking?

o What will happen if it’s not funded?

Choose a Goal

o Specific goal – we want to raise $5,000 to build a playground in 3months

o We need to raise $60,000 or the theater will close

o KickStarter is an all or nothing platform (1-60days)

o Make sure to budget for the fees that all the platforms collect – whether or not you

reach your goal

Select Rewards

o What will motivate people to back your project?

o For nonprofits, it’s impact-change to society, people helped, animals saved

o For businesses, it’s something tangible tshirts, tickets, exclusives access, signed books

o Must be “products and experiences” not cash

Instill Urgency

o The most successful campaigns in terms of % funded last between 20 to 40 days This

creates urgency while still providing fundraisers with enough time to spread the word.

Be Brief

o Projects with an average word of between 300 to 500 words to raise the most money.

Explain who, what, and why

o In 300-500 be able to describe

The Problem

The Why Now

The How (how money will be spent)

The (WIIFM) what’s in it for me

Use Video

Campaigns that have a personal video raise 105% more than those that don’t. If a picture is

worth a thousand words than a video is worth a million.

Be Responsive

Who will respond to inquiries and questions?

How will you acknowledge donations?

How will you record donations?

Page 37: The innovation magazine (glamorous issue)

Crowd-funding

The innovation |SPRING 2014 37

How will you cultivate these donors?

Do you have a database

Will there be a special group for these donors?
