Best Wishes to our Dear Friend Rick Knapp Long-Time Page-Walker Staff Member & Educator Retires

By Kris Carmichael

Rick Knapp, who has worked for the past 6½ years as a part-time center aide, school outreach docent and Spanish teacher at the Page-Walker, retired on March 31, 2012. Rick is moving

to Florida to spend more time with his family, especially his new grandson, Trevor.

During Rick’s tenure at the Page-Walker, he has performed a variety of duties in addition to his center aide responsibilities. He wrote a substantial eighth-grade lesson plan with Cindi Baker and taught portions of that lesson plan to middle school students in Cary and Apex. Rick independently developed and presented costumed outreach school programs for Cary’s first and third grade students. He also organized a successful format for school group visits to the Page-Walker, served as liaison to the Friends of the Page-Walker (along with other center staff), and has taken part in Honor-a-Teacher interviews for several years. From time to time Rick has assisted in museum functions such as writing and editing exhibit copy and other materials, evaluating artifacts, and giving tours.

Finally, Rick performed “above and beyond” as interim administrator and programmer at the Page-Walker in 2008 during the four months

prior to Kris’s arrival, ensuring continuity of contracted structural repairs and public programs, such as classes and concerts, at the center.

We will all miss Rick and all his great work at the Page-Walker and wish him all the best in the years ahead.

With appreciation and Best Wishes

Thank You Rick Knapp!

Oral History By Peggy Van Scoyoc

The Town of Cary is currently completing the Cary Historic Resources Survey and Inventory project. The Town has hired Ellen Turco of Circa, Inc. to conduct research and survey local citizens to fill in and update the inventory of historic structures in Cary. As part of that project, Ellen and I interviewed Bob Heater on October 24, 2011. This is the third time that the Friends have interviewed Mr. Heater. Once again, he shared a treasure trove of valuable information with us. Mr. Heater’s father, R.O. Heater, was the first housing developer in Cary. Bob had many maps and plots to show us, encompassing the downtown area and Hillcrest Cemetery. He explained how this part of town was developed, how streets and parks were plotted and named and gave us details about how the cemetery evolved over time. Our two-hour interview with him was fascinating and has added numerous details to the Town’s inventory and survey. On January 25, 2012, I made our sixth submission of interviews to the Wilson Library at UNC-Chapel Hill. With only five interviews included, this was the smallest submission we have made, but all five interviews are our first ones to be digitally recorded. So, instead of taking in five cassette tapes, plus paper copies of all the transcripts

and other related forms, I handed over a flash drive that was immediately downloaded into their computer and the drive was then returned to me. Because the recordings and transcripts are already in a digital format, they can be put on the Internet immediately. UNC has recently received a large grant to digitize all of their oral history interviews and they are making progress to complete this task. With more than 5,000 interviews in their collection, it will take time, but much has already been completed. The Cary collection, which now includes 65 interviews and their transcripts, will all soon be on-line. How exciting is that!

A Feast for the Senses:

The Page Educational

Garden By Anne Kratzer

As in most gardens this spring, plant growth is ahead of schedule due to the mild winter, and the possibilities are exciting, despite the pollen! Thanks so much to the volunteers who maintained the garden over the winter months: Lynn McKenzie, Lois Nixon, Pat Fish, Barb Wetmore, Bev Samuelson, Jimi Lagattuta and Kay Struffolino. Thanks also to the Town’s Public Works Department, Carolyn Lewis and Kay Struffolino who continue to work in partnership on behalf of the Page Educational Garden and volunteers.

A humorous perspective of maintaining the garden over the winter months was provided by Barb, Bev and Jimi who were given the honor to cut down the hollyhock stems in February. Because of the mild winter, blooms kept appearing until late January, and all gardeners deemed that it was finally time for our special garden “sculpture” to be removed. It was referred to as “sculpture” because of its resemblance, as noted by Kay, to the sculpture on the grounds of the Page-Walker entitled Ecclesiastes (War Wagon) by Phil Alan Simpson. As you can see in the preceding photos, Barb and Bev demonstrated their creativity as they pretended they were jousting knights from the Middle Ages!

Speaking of creativity, Lois Nixon has shared her exquisite photo taken last November of pollinators on Mrs. Dunham’s Ginger plant that grows in the garden. It recently won an award in a photography contest!

Ginger plant in Page Educational Garden. Award-winning photo by, and courtesy of, Lois Nixon

We also want to thank Carolyn Lewis of the Town for volunteering to take photos of the herbs three times during the growing season so that we can document the growing conditions. Speaking of growing conditions, look for the large hyacinth bean “teepee” to be in a new location because of the infestation problems we experienced last year.

Planting Day for the gardens is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, 9:00 a.m. – Noon. We’ll be performing the normal maintenance tasks and adding new plants and mulch. Campbell Road Nursery and our plant consultant volunteer Layne Snelling are wonderful supporters of our gardens and we thank them for years of support. Thanks to our volunteers, we’ll have the gardens in tip-top shape for the third annual Herbfest on Saturday May 5 (see story p. 1). The Page Educational Garden will be one of the focal points of this exciting festival. (continued)

Lynn McKenzie, Kay Struffolino, Susan Hawthorne, and Barb Wetmore will join me at the garden to welcome the community and share knowledge of herbs. Assisting us in the professional look of the gardens is volunteer John Duncan who makes our labels.

A heartfelt thanks to those who have volunteered to assist during the upcoming growing season: Kay Struffolino, Lynn McKenzie, Lois Nixon, Mercedes Auger, Cheryl McLean, Paul & Lynn Wasylkevych, Jerod Kratzer, Lea & Lou Hovis, Pat Fish, Marla Dorrel, Barbara Wetmore, Bev Samuelson, Jimi Lagattuta, Renate Thompson, Susan Hawthorne, Laura Dorton, Marilyn Butler, Kerry Mead, Alice Delahanty, Michele Brandow, Sharon Wood and Susan Quint. And we couldn’t maintain the gardens without the Town’s invaluable support, notably Lyman Collins, Kris Carmichael, Carolyn Lewis, Rob Garner, Kevin O’Shea, Jeff Privette, Christian Carfano, Cody Ooten, Kevin Johnson and the Public Works staff. Anyone who wishes to join the Page Educational Garden volunteers and work in a place of peace and beauty, please contact me at [email protected].

Historic Resources Survey: for an update

on this important component of the

Town’s Historic Preservation Master

Plan, see the excellent recent Cary News article

by Andrew Kenney

Preserving the Past By Bob Myers and Brent Miller

The Friends’ historic preservation speaker series continues to grow in popularity. On May 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Page-Walker, we will present the seventh annual installment of What Have We Got to Lose? This popular program is updated for 2012 with lost and changed properties, town-acquired properties and a special focus on properties identified as priorities in the historic resources survey that is underway by the Town of Cary (see sidebar). On March 27, we hosted the 25th program of the series that began in 2006 – a panel discussion, Where Did I Come From? A Genealogy Primer. Moderated by Friends board member Marilyn Butler, the panel included Judy Ryson, a preservation professional; Bren Witchger, a writer; Carla Michaels, who specializes in identifying photographs; and Susan Wolf Neilson from the Olivia Raney Local History Library – and it was the third consecutive standing-room-only program! Earlier in the year, on January 24, local artist Val Fox led the program Who is that Guy? The Story Behind the Cary Mural. In an entertaining, educational manner, Ms. Fox explained her life, research, methods, events and anecdotes associated with painting the mural on the store at the corner of South Harrison and West Chatham streets.

The Town of Cary has recently purchased several historic properties in and around the Town Center Historic District. The Friends believe that public ownership can be positive and we hope and expect that these historic structures will be preserved and put to uses that benefit the public.

Among the properties Cary has purchased are the historic Jones-Foy House, a contributing structure in the Town Center

Historic District, and the Ivey-Ellington-Waddell House, which is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are two of the Friends’ informally designated “LDIFOB” (Lie Down In Front Of Bulldozers) properties (the others are the Page-Walker, Nancy Jones House and Lane-Bennett House). The Friends intend to work closely with the Town to assist in any way we can as plans move forward for these and other properties.

We are rejuvenating our historic plaque program, through which we have facilitated the installation of National Register plaques on 13 of the 37 remaining contributing structures in the Town Center Historic District. We soon will begin a new drive to install additional plaques, not only downtown but also in Green Level and Carpenter historic districts. In particular, we are working with the Town of Cary to recognize the Cary Arts Center with a plaque. In a related effort, the Friends are working with the Town on signage to identify the Town Center District boundaries.

In our community beyond Cary, we are working with the Wake County Historic Preservation Commission to support their efforts to designate a landmark cemetery in Wake County. We believe that Cary has candidate cemeteries for this designation. We also have named historic preservation committee chair Bob Myers as a liaison to the Pugh House preservation team at the request of Morrisville Mayor Jackie Holcombe. We also have supported the development of information about Cary’s historic properties on the new Triangle Wiki and we encourage all Friends to contribute.

White Plains Cemetery:

A Beautiful Piece

of Cary’s Heritage By Anne Kratzer

After 35 years of effort and determination by Maynard Oaks and Friends volunteers in partnership with the Town of Cary, White Plains is a beautiful site to recall the contributions of Nathaniel Jones and his family to the early history of western Wake County. We’ve received many complements for the interpretative sign that places the cemetery in its appropriate historical context. In addition, the Town’s gifts to the site of redbuds and dogwoods to celebrate the completion of the restoration of the Cemetery last October have become established and are sharing their beauty. The wood hyacinths that the Friends planted in the fall are peeking through the violet blossoms of periwinkle. What a beautiful setting!

We continue to schedule quarterly maintenance days, although some of the neighbors, Kay Hawkins, Elaine & John Loyack and Matt Leitzke, assist with maintenance on a more frequent basis. Thanks to Matt Leitzke, Marilyn Butler, Lisa Englert, Pat Fish, Barb Wetmore, John Loyack and Kay Hawkins for joining me in sprucing up the cemetery in December and/or March. Our remaining 2012 maintenance days are June 2, September 1 and December 1 at 10:00 a.m. We usually finish within an hour. If you would like to join us, please contact me at [email protected]. The cemetery is located next to 102 Tolliver Court in Cary. The November 2011 Innkeeper (available on our website) contains an historical overview of the White Plains Cemetery and Nathaniel Jones.

We are very excited that an additional honor may be given to Nathaniel Jones of White Plains. Cindy Foster, president of the Yates Mill Chapter NSDAR, has applied to the national DAR organization for an historical

marker recognizing the service of Nathaniel Jones during the American Revolution. It would be quite an honor for Cary to have national recognition for one of its earliest settlers. Thanks to Cindy and the Yates Mill DAR for pursuing this recognition, and to Kris Carmichael for assisting in preparing the application.

Stop by the White Plains Cemetery during these beautiful spring days and take a step back in history.
