ANGRAENI, ALVONSA LINTANG CHYNDI (2019). The Influence of Four’s

Personality towards Tris’s Personality Development as Seen in Divergent

Movie. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Universitas

Sanata Dharma.

The main object of this study is a movie script entitled Divergent based on

the novel with the same title by Veronica Roth. This undergraduate thesis is

conducted to analyze the influence of Four towards the main character’s

personality. Tris, as the main character of the movie, develops her personality

throughout the story.

There are two objectives discussed throughout this research in order to

analyze Four’s character towards Tris’s personality development. The first is to

explain the personalities of Tris and Four that are described in Divergent movie

script. The second is to find out the development of Tris’s personality. The third is

to discover how Four’s influence Tris’s personality development.

The researcher uses library research as the method of the study to obtain the

theory and the data. This research uses psychological approach. The researcher uses

theories to support the evidences that needed to conduct this research. The first

theory is theory of character and characterization. The second theory applies the

theory of personality development by Elizabeth Hurlock.

There are three findings in this research. Firstly, the researcher finds out that

Tris are obedient, insecure, and inexpressive. Meanwhile, Four are straightforward,

rebellious and brave. Secondly, analyzing the movie script, the researcher finds out

that Tris becomes rebellious, courageous, and expressive. Tris’s personality

development is related to Four. By giving advices and helps, Four influences in how

Tris faces her hard time situations in Dauntless.

Objek utama dari penelitian ini adalah naskah film yang berjudul Divergent

yang diadaptasi dari novel dengan judul yang sama oleh Veronica Roth. Penelitian

ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis karakteristik Four memengaruhi perkembangan

kepribadian Tris. Tris sebagai pemeran utama dalam film, dia mengalami

perubahan kepribadian.

Terdapat dua objek yang dibahas dalam penelitian ini. Pertama adalah

menjelaskan karakteristik Tris dan Four yang dideskripsikan dalam naskah film

Divergent. Yang kedua adalah membahas tentang bagaimana sosok Four dapat

mempengaruhi perkembangan kepribadian Tris.

Peneliti menggunakan metode penelitian kepustakaan untuk memperoleh

teori dan data. Untuk pendekatannya, penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan

psikologi. Beberapa teori digunakan untuk menganalisa permasalahan dalam

penelitian ini dengan mengaplikasikan teori karakterisasi dan teori perkembangan

kepribadian oleh Elizabeth Hurlock.

Tris dideskripsikan sebagai seorang gadis yang penurut, tidak percaya diri

dan memendam perasaan. Sedangkan Four adalah seseorang yang berterus terang,

pemberontak dan pemberani. Yang kedua, dalam menganalisa naskah teks ini.

Peneliti mendeskripsikan sosok Tris menjadi pemberontak, pemberani, dan

ekspresif. Perubahan perilaku Tris dipengaruhi oleh Four. Dengan memberikan

saran dan pertolongan, Four mempengaruhi kepribadian Tris saat ia menghadapi

masa sulit di Dauntless.

Setelah Tris bertemu Four, dia menjadi gadis yang pemberontak, berterus

terang dan merasa percaya diri. Kepribadian Tris mengalami perkembangan dari

awal hingga akhir cerita. Karakteristik Four mempengaruhi kepribadian Tris.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Literature is a part of human aspects. Human and literature cannot be

separated because literature is human product and part of human life. Hudson states

that literature is representation of what human beings have been through and

experienced in life, in the other way is that a literature is a reflection of life (2006,

p. 10). Many values and knowledge can be obtained through literature. It means

that literary works must have values to be useful for the audiences.

There are many forms of literary works, such as poem, prose, novel, drama,

movie script and many more. In this era, all of them is adapted into a movie, but it

is still considered to be form of literary work. Movie is an adaptation of literature

and a popular entertainment, they also display various contents for certain groups

of age. A movie is the type of visual entertainment which is shown on a screen and

uses moving pictures to tell stories. Giannetti states that a movie script is literary

product (1987, p. 265). Movie have a close relationship with literature because

movies must have a script because a script is a written form like a literary work. In

this research, the researcher decided to use a movie script.

The movie Divergent is a 2014 American science fiction action movie

directed by Neil Norman Burger. Tris or Beatrice Prior is the main character in the

story. Burger directed the science fiction action film Divergent on 2014, based on

the dystopian novel by Veronica Roth which consists of the novels Divergent,

Insurgent, and Allegiant. Dystopian is an imagined world or society in which

people lead wretched, dehumanized, fearful lives (Merriam Webster Dictionary,

2019). The Divergent’s popularity increases with the release of the movie by the

same name, Shailene Woodley as the protagonist Tris or Beatrice Prior, Theo James

as Tobias or Four, and so on.

This story tells about a city that are divided into five factions which are

Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Erudite, and Dauntless based on personality

characteristics. Factions is groups of people that divided based on their skill and

ability. Society has system to makes they live in peace.

We're lucky to be in The City. They say the war was terrible that the rest

of the world was destroyed. Our founders built the wall to keep us safe and

they divided us into five groups, factions, to keep the peace (Daugherty &

Taylor, 2014, lines 2-7).

Every teenage boy and girl, at the age of sixteen has to decide whether they

remain with their parents in the factions where they grew up, or whether they would

like to transfer to another faction. Beatrice Prior is Tris’s old name who has been

raised in the Abnegation faction which values selflessness. Aptitude test is a

mandatory test that is supposed to conclude upon a person’s ideal faction.

Normally, people have one result but Tris has three, and it is called ‘divergent’.

Tris’s personality has developed from the beginning until the end of the

story. The reason of Tris’s personality development because of her experiences

through the good and bad situations. The role of Four is very important for Tris’s

personality development. When Tris finds out a conspiracy by a faction leader of

Erudite to destroy all divergents and takes over the government, Tris must learn to

trust Four and they must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before

all divergents die. Four makes Tris’s personality change to continue her life in

dauntless. In the end, they support each other to break the rules of the factions.

After watching the movie and reading the movie script, the researcher is

interested in Tris’s personality development and how Four’s personality has

changed Tris’s personality. This literary work is interesting to discuss because the

story tells about how someone can change other person’s personality makes the

researcher want to reveal more about it. This research can be done by using the

theory of personality development by Elizabeth Hurlock. Hurlock states that

personality development is a stage in growth constantly changing and evoking

process within an individual (1974, p. 7).

B. Problem Formulation

Based on the background of the study above, there are three problems

formulated as follows:

1. How is Tris and Four’s personality described?

2. How does Four’s personality influence Tris’s personality development?

C. Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to find out the answers of the problems formulation.

Based on the problems that have been formulated, this study has two main

objectives. The first objective is to find out the personality of Tris and Four are

described in the story. By viewing the characters personality from the beginning

until the end of the story. The second objective is to find out Tris’s personality

development which is related to Four.

D. Definition of Terms

In analyzing the Divergent movie script, it is important to define the terms

to avoid misunderstanding and give clear explanation that are used for this study.

First, personality development is structural changes since childhood into maturity,

the changes in the process caused by many factors (Hall and Lindsey, 1993, p. 6).

In this study, personality development refers to the change in human’s personality

that they receive from their past or experience and make them more mature such as

their thought. Second, movie script or screenplay is a written work of a movie

(Encyclopedia Britannica, 2012). The script is usually used inside a television

program, film, and many more.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

The researcher analyzes a movie script entitled Divergent directed by Neil

Norman Burger. This chapter contains three parts namely review of related studies,

review related theories and theoretical framework. First, review of related studies

contain of some previous studies which are related to this study. Second, review of

related theories is the theories that the researcher uses to analyze the movie. Third,

theoretical framework contains information about the functions of the studies and

theories, and also the application to this study.

A. Review of Related Study

This part discusses several similar topics to this study which have been done

by some researchers. The similarity includes the theory, focus, topic and the

different parts of this study.

The first related study is written by Handoko (2016) in her undergraduate

thesis discusses class struggle as the impact of capitalism to see the class struggle

in the class society as seen in the novel Divergent. In her study, he uses the theory

of setting, theory of Marxism that includes theory of Capitalism, theory of Class

Consciousness. Theory of class, theory of class struggle. According to Handoko,

the class struggle plays an important role in the revolution of the class society to

classless society (2016, p. 15).

Idea of capitalism revealed through faction in Divergent. From the

description of the factions through social setting, there is inequality in the

distribution of wealth and power in the society. Class struggle as the impact

of capitalism that is despicted through factions in the Divergent (Handoko,

2016, p. 53).

The similarity is the title of the story Divergent but the main object of the

study is different, Handoko uses a novel while the researcher uses a movie script.

Divergent is an adaptation of the novel by Veronica Roth. It was directed by

Neil Burger and was released on 2014. The focus of the study also different. In her

thesis, she focuses on class struggle as the impact of capitalism while the researcher

tries to analyze the influence of Four in changing Tris’s personality.

The second related study is written by Angganadewa (2017) in his

undergraduate thesis discusses how George and Emily deal with their own problems

will affect their development in their next stage. His thesis is similar because it

discusses the character and characterization and personality development of the

character. His thesis does not only focus on personality, but also uses psychosocial

development. It discuss about personality and physically developed through social

interaction with others to answer the problem formulation. However, the researcher

analyzes the influence of Four in changing Tris’s personality. The object of the

study also different, Angganadewa’s uses a play to discuss his undergraduate thesis.

The third related study is written by Prasgiyardi (2016) in his thesis focuses

on describing social classes and political factions. He uses Marxism criticism theory

consist of five major issues, there are Dialectical materialism, Historical

materialism, Alienation, Class Struggle, and Revolution.

Veronica Roth’s novel Divergent reflects the process of dialectical

materialism. In Divergent, thesis was represented by Natalie Prior when she

came to Dauntless and met Tris in Visiting Day. She said that there was

something wrong between Erudite and Abnegation. She wanted Tris to meet

Caleb in Erudite and find out the problem. She could not explain more about

this information (Harnanto, 2016, p. 3).

Prasgiyardi explains about the process of dialectical materialism seen when

Tris’s mother, Natalie came to dauntless and she wanted Tris to meet Caleb, her

brother to find out the problem between Erudite and Abnegation because there is

something wrong among those two factions but Natalie cannot explain more about

this information.

The differences with this study lie in the focus aspect which is being

analyzed. Prasgiyardi’s focuses on analyzing social classes and political factions by

using Marxism criticism approach while the researcher focuses on how Four give

strong influences to develop the main character’s personality. Both of the researcher

and Harnanto’s work under the same title which is “Divergent” but the researcher

analyzes the movie script.

B. Review of Related Theories

Theories are needed as the tool to analyze the work to basic thought of

analysis. There will be two main theories that will used in order to answer the

problems formulation.

1. Theory of Character and Characterization

This theory is used to explain how the main character is described in the

movie. Character is the most important character in the story but he or she needs

other characters to deliver the values of the story. It means that he or she cannot

stand on his or her own character. Abrams states that character are the persons in

the dramatic or narrative work, endowed with moral that are expressed in what they

say and what they do (2012, p. 46).

Meanwhile, Roberts and Jacobs state that character is an extended verbal

representation of human being, the inner self that determines speech, thought, and

behavior (1987, p. 199). They explain to convey information about the characters

(1987, pp. 122-124).

a. What the characters say and think

The speech can be made to analyze the characteristics of the speaker directly or

indirectly through emotional and intellectual state. Speech also capable to show

change or development of the character (Robert and Jacobs, 1987, p. 123). It means

that characteristic of a character can be describe through what he or she says.

b. What the characters do

Action of the characters signal the personality of the doer about character’s

behavior to determine what the quality that the characters have (Roberts and Jacobs,

1987, p. 123).

c. What other characters say about them

Character in literary work is determine by other characters. By giving

opinion about the characters have and it is given directly or indirectly (Roberts and

Jacobs, 1987, p. 123).

d. What the author says about the character

The author also can give direct description and comment about the character

(Robert and Jacobs, 1987, p. 123).

According to Boggs and Petrie there are some ways to analyze

characterization in the movie, first is characterization through dialogue, to know

someone’s personality can be revealed based on their thought, attitude, and emotion

through their speech, second is character through external action, the most effective

characterization is achieved not by large actions in the movie but the small actions

also can become significant, third is characterization through reactions of other

characters, it means from the conversation or dialogue between the characters, it

easier to get the information about the characters (2008, pp. 61-64).

These are the ways to make the reader not only able to identify the minds

set of the character in the story. By understanding character and characterization,

the researcher can answer the problem formulations about character and

characterization in two characters who are Tris and Four in the movie easily.

2. Theory of Personality Development

Personality is a stage in growth of changing process within an individual.

The process become more complex, in the patterning of one’s self concept, attitude,

habits, emotional states, etc (Hurlock, 1974, p. 7). In the stories, there are some

ways to know that the character may develop. According to Perrine, character

divides into flat and round character, a flat character mentions as a static character

and a round character called as a developing character (1974, p. 71). Someone

becomes over motivated to change his or her traits to achieve some goals in his or

her life.

Personality is the dynamic organization within the individual of those

psychological systems that determine his or her characteristic behavior and thought

(1974, p. 7). It is also necessary to discuss and explain the factors affecting the

changes in the main character that may influence her personality.

According to Hurlock, there are three major factors that may influence the

development of the personality. The first is individual’s hereditary endowment. The

second is his or her experiences within the family. The third is the important events

that happen later in life outside of the home environment (1974, p. 19). It means

that every person has different reason of personality changes.

Every person has their own personality and it may have a different

personality to the others. The personality of a person can determine the

characteristic behavior and thought. The influence of environment can shaped in

the individual lives. It means that people outside the home enable a change in

personality. According to Hurlock, there are some conditions changes in someone’s

personality:

a. Changes in Significant People

Someone’s personality changes depend on how much the significant

person’s value are influenced by the change of significant people to their life. The

person could be family, lover, friends, and children. When someone is different

from his or her important people, he or she tries to adapt his/her pattern of behavior,

attitude, beliefs, values, and aspirations (Hurlock, 1974, p. 126). It depends on how

often he/she spends time together.

b. Changes in Social Pressure

A change happens when an individual has desire to be accepted by those

who are significant to him/her, he/she tries to changes any personality traits that

will militate against his being accepted (Hurlock, 1974, p. 126). It means society

has a great impact in deciding in personality changes to be accepted in the social

group.

C. Theoretical Framework

This part explains the contribution of the theories and review to answer the

questions which have been formulated in the first chapter. The first theory is theory

of character and characterization. This theory is used to reveal the descriptions of

the characters in the story. The second theory is personality development, this

theory is to analyze the personality of the character that would help the researcher

to prove the personality development of Tris that is influenced by Four in the

Divergent movie. In the third question, the researcher uses the theory of personality

development to describe the process of the influence of another character to prove

that there are some influences in personality development.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter consist of three major points. The first point is object of the

study that describes the work analysis. The second is approach of the study, it

explains of the approach to be used in this researcher. The third is method of the

study that describes the process of analyzing the work.

A. Object of the Study

The object of the study is a movie script entitled Divergent. Divergent is the

movie adaptation of the novel on 2011 by Veronica Roth. It is filmed by Summit

Entertainment under the same title. The unauthorized script is downloaded from

subscene.com. It takes duration about 139 minutes. The movie is directed by Neil

Burger and released on 2014. The movie gets a financial success as it reached on

the 1 spot at the box office during its opening weekend. The movie has won some

awards such as Teen Choice Awards, People Choice Awards, MTV Movie Awards,

Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards and many more.

The story takes place in Chicago. The story tells about a society are divided

into five factions based on human virtues which are Abnegation as a faction that

values selflessness, Amity as a faction that dislikes war and live in peace, Candor

is a faction that value honesty or truthful, Erudite is a faction that values knowledge

or the intelligent and Dauntless represents strength and bravery, based on their

personalities. All factions have different roles and contributions to the society.

Beside the five factions, there are factionless and divergent. Divergent is a person

who belong to more than one faction. In the beginning of the story, Tris as a main

character who is an abnegation but she chooses to transfer to Dauntless faction. She

meets four who is an instructor in dauntless. The conflict occurs when Tris has to

face her hard time in the dauntless initiates. The other conflict occurs when Erudite

faction wants to takes control the government and kill divergents. Tris who is one

of a divergent, does not agree with Erudite’s actions to kill divergents. Tris’s

personality has changed from the beginning until the end of the story. The story

shows how Four’s personality influences towards Tris’s personality development.

Tris changes her personalities when she met Four.

B. Approach of the Study

Since this undergraduate thesis is focused on personality development, the

researcher mainly uses psychological approach to analyze the topic. The

psychological approach is applied to analyze the character.

The researcher uses this approach because psychology is suitable for this

research to analyze the character in the movie because it deals with human behavior.

Human life consist of two aspects, which are individual and social aspect.

Individual aspect concern why physical changes and human personality

development. Human personality development is influenced by two factors

which are human’s experience within family and environment (Hurlock,

1974, p. 234).

From the quotation above, personality development of a person influenced

by two factors which are human’s experience and environment factor. Human’s

experience concern of human life about individuality. On the other hand,

environment factor is a place of a person lives, people around him/her can take a

part in a person’s personality development. It means that personality development

can be shaped when the person experiences thing through the important event in

later life outside home environment.

This approach is chosen to analyze Divergent movie script to analyze the

development of personality influenced by another person. The psychological

approach refers the psychological aspect through the character in the literary works

such as novel, movie or film, it deals with human behavior which connected to

psychological theories.

Psychological approach is applied to analyze Tris’s personality

development from psychological point of view of human being because this study

is dealing with human behavior. Hurlock states that the changes of individual’s

personality can be affected by some factors such as significant person and social

pressure (Hurlock, 1974, p. 124). By using psychological approach, the researcher

can analyze the changing systematically. Psychological implies that what a person

is how he thinks and feels, and what included in his total psychological makeup will

be revealed through his speech and behavior (Hurlock, 1974, p. 6). In conclusion,

the researcher will analyze the main character personality development as one of

the concern of this research by using psychological approach to analyze the

development of personality influenced by another person.

C. Method of the Study

The researcher used library research to collect the data that were needed

from the books, websites, movie script, and the other written books that were related

with the study to support the discussion of the problem formulation. Besides, the

data was also compiled from the internet. The primary sources of this research was

used script to analyze the movie. The secondary sources used such as a book to

support this research.

There were several steps to analyze this thesis. First, the researcher watched

the Divergent movie and paid attention to the movie script carefully to get a better

understanding. The script was taken from subscene.com. This particular version

was chosen because it was more detailed that contain of actions, dialogues of the

character are also narrated. Second, the researcher found theory and approaches

related to the analysis that helped to answer the questions. Third, the researcher paid

attention to Tris’s as the main characters and examined the development of Tris’s

personality by using theory of character and characterization. The goal of the study

is to describe Tris’s personality and the influence of Four’s character towards Tris's

personality development. Having observed them through the movie script, the

researcher is able to know the characteristic. In order to know how Four influences

Tris’s, the researcher analyzed Four’s personality. Then, the researcher analyzed

the influence of Four’s character towards Tris’s personality development by using

theory of personality development. Fourth, the researcher drew the conclusion of

this study based on the analysis.

CHAPTER IV

ANALYSIS

In this chapter, there are two problems that need to be analyzed based on the

questions in the problem formulations. The first part describes Tris and Four

personality. The second part explains analyzes how Four influences towards Tris’s

personality development. Tris’s personality development which is influenced by

Four will be revealed. The researcher uses the dialogue in the movie script to

analyze this research.

A. The Description of Tris and Four’s Personality

There are only two characters that is need to be analyzed in this research

which are Tris and Four. These two characters are interesting to discuss because

they play the important roles in the story. The researcher employs Roberts and

Jacobs’s concept that the character can be described as an extended verbal

representation of human being, the inner self that determines speech, thought, and

behavior. The researcher tries to see the characteristic of Tris and Four by finding

information within the movie script to get deeper understanding by using the theory

character and characterizations. Characterization is the concept of creating the

characters for a narrative (Harrison, 1998, p. 55). After that, the researcher can

figure out Tris’s personality and how it is changed that seen through the conflict by

using Hurlock’s theory about personality development. Hurlock states that there are

two aspects that influence process of development which are individual and social.

Human’s personality development is influenced by human experience and

important events in later life outside the home (Hurlock, 1974, p. 19).

B. The Description of Tris’s Personality

Beatrice Prior or known as Tris is the main character in the story as a

protagonist and narrator. Since the story is narrated by the first person point of view.

Tris is raised in Abnegation family which value of selflessness. Her father is a

leader of Abnegation. Her character is developed from a young age by her

surroundings. In order explain Tris’s character, the researcher uses the theory of

character and characterization by Robert and Jacob. The descriptions of Tris can be

described through her conversation which can be found in the movie script.

Beatrice is raised in the Abnegation faction, but chooses to transfer to

Dauntless because she feels it is who she truly is. However, her aptitude test is

inconclusive, and she is "Divergent. Beatrice Prior begins her new life in Dauntless

under a new name “Tris”.

a. Obedient

When Tris lives in abnegation, she is portrayed as an obedient person. She

always tries to do what her parents tell to her. She is raised in Abnegation faction

and lives with her parents and also her brother named Caleb Prior. Tris describes as

an obedient girl who always follow the rules of abnegation.

Obedience is social influence in which a person yields to instructions or

orders from an authority figure. Obedience also a behavior or an act that is

respectful of rules or laws (Merriam Webster Dictionary, 2019).

TRIS

My faction is Abnegation. The others all call us "stiffs”. We lead a simple

life, selfless, dedicated to helping others. We even feed the Factionless, the

ones who don't fit in anywhere. Because we're public servants, we're trusted

to run the government. My father works alongside our leader, Marcus. It all

works. Everyone knows where they belong. (Daugherty & Taylor, 2014,

lines 24-34).

In the quotation, Tris is a teenage girl from abnegation who lives in a simple

life. Tris explains in her narration that she tries to follow her parents and the rules

in abnegation, where she lives. The rule is important and all members in the faction

that should be obeyed by the followers of Abnegation. Abnegation is a faction that

values selflessness. She should follow the rules of abnegation society. Her parents

always force her to put the needs of other people before her own. Further, Tris’s

society is structured such as dresses in drab colors, eat simply and are only allowed

to steal a quick glance in the mirror once every three months when it is time for a

haircut. Her mom always teach her to never think of herself and always help others

first.

TRIS

My mother says there's an art to losing yourself. But I haven't figured it out

yet. I'm supposed to never think of myself, to always help others. To never

look too long in the mirror (Daugherty & Taylor, 2014, lines 36-40).

Tris’s statement implies that she does not enjoy her life for being an

abnegation because she thinks that she is not really into the faction, but she keeps

it to herself. Her mother says that it is an art of losing yourself, but she does not

agree with it. It is hard to be herself and enjoy the situation, but she does not have

any choices.

In this situation, Tris looks at herself in the mirror and her mom cut her hair.

Being an Abnegation, it means that she has to follow the Abnegation rules or

selfless society to be a part of them such as never think of herself, always help

others and never look too long in the mirror and eat dinner by the light of one bare

light bulb. Tris’s parents control almost everything that their children do. In

Abnegation, she lives with her brother, Caleb and her parents. As she loves her

family, this is not easy to make the decision to leave them.

b. Insecure

The researcher finds that Tris is an insecure person. This can be seen when

Eric mentions Tris to fight in combat training with her match named Molly who is

bigger than Tris. Molly is a dauntless born which means that her skill in protecting

herself is well than Tris.

ERIC

First jumper, in the ring. Last jumper, time to fight

(Daugherty & Taylor, 2014, lines 439-442).

Tris as a first jumper has to fight with Molly as the last jumper then, Molly

and Tris walk onto the ring and face each other. Molly easily beats Tris, after getting

beaten, Tris sits in the ring with an ice pack on her face, Eric leads the rest of the

initiates to see the ranking board Tris. Tris looks at the board and sees her name in

red at the bottom of the board with a score of 32. Tris seems insecure to fight

because she has never tried to do this before.

ERIC

All right, guys, over here. Listen up. Know what this board is? It's your life.

We grade you every day. If you're still in the red by the end of the first stage,

you're out (Daugherty & Taylor, 2014, lines 459-465).

The statement above shows when Eric tells the initiates that they will be

ranked and that only the top ten initiates will be allowed into the Dauntless faction.

The initiates or all new dauntless members set to begin training to prove that they

are worthy to stay in Dauntless faction. Eric warns them that if they fail to reach the

top ranks and still in red they will be kicked out of Dauntless and stay factionless,

unable to return to their old homes. Tris looks at the board and sees her name in red

at the bottom of the board with a score of 32. After leaving Abnegation, her old

faction, Tris must perform well in Dauntless training. Tris might be occasionally

insecure about where she belongs because dauntless training is so hard. Dauntless

training is not easy as it seems and she worries that she cannot passes dauntless

trainee well and becomes a faction less. Tris admits that she is the weakest and

insecure about her ability to stay in Dauntless.

TORI

You made a mistake, choosing Dauntless. They'll find out about you.

TRIS

Who? Who will?

TORI

The people you're a threat to.

TRIS

What people? Who, Dauntless?

TORI

No, society. If you don't fit into a category, they can't control you.

TRIS

I don't get it. I'm Dauntless. I'm going to be Dauntless. I chose Dauntless.


The conversation above happens when Tris meets Tori again, she tries to

talk with Tori but Tori seems cold and keeps quiet about their conversations before

about aptitude test. Tris seems insecure about her identity and Tori’s explanation.

According to Tori’s statement above, it is a mistake to choose dauntless because it

will bring Tris in danger. Tris does not get it about what Tori’s talking about and

curious what is that mean. For this reason, the faction leaders and society are

terrified of divergents ability and see them as threats who will always cause trouble

for them.

Tris seems unconfident when Four wants to know how Tris passes the

simulation training in the simulation room easily. Simulation room where all

dauntless will be tested on the control of their fears.

FOUR

What were your test results? Your aptitude test?

TRIS

Abnegation.

FOUR

I don’t think so.

TRIS

What?

FOUR

I think you’re lying to me.

TRIS

Why would I lie to you?

FOUR

I’m going to ask you one more time. What were your test results?

TRIS

Abnegation.

FOUR

Fine, you’re free to go. Tris? Just so you know, Dauntless don’t break the

glass like that.


This scene happens when Tris is at the simulation room, Four injects Tris

with a serum that simulates the part of Tris’s brain then, transmitters in the serum

allow Four to see the images in Tris’s mind. It means Four can see inside Tris’s

mind.

When Tris is in her second simulation, she finds herself trapped in a tank

filling up with water then she touches the glass with her finger which starts to crack,

as she taps it a couple of times the glass suddenly breaks and Tris suddenly snaps

out of the simulation. Four finds out something wrong with Tris then, he asks Tris

how did she broke the glass because he knows Dauntless do not break the glass like

that. Four asks about Tris’s aptitude test result but, Tris seems unconfident to

answer and says her result test is Abnegation. Four does not believe and knows Tris

lies to him. Tris seems insecure when Four asking about her test result because her

test result was inconclusive or divergent. According to Tori inconclusive test result

means divergent (Daugherty & Taylor, 2014, lines 136-140). Tori warns Tris to

keep it on herself. Natalie also warns Tris do not tell anyone because people have

always been so threatened by Divergents and Erudite is looking for them

everywhere. When Four asks about Tris’s result test, Tris does not want to tell the

truth that she is a divergent.

c. Inexpressive

In Abnegation, Tris is shown as an inexpressive person who is Tris is not

allowed to express herself. Inexpressive is not expressive or failing to convey the

feeling or meaning intended (Merriam Webster Dictionary, 2019).

PETER

Hey, so all the food that we’re not getting, you guys are giving away to the

factionless? Right? Yeah?

ABNEGATION BOY

Yeah.

PETER

You’re a liar. Why are you lying to me? Everybody knows you keep it for

yourselves, so why don’t you just admit it? Huh? I’m talking to you. Are

The conversation above shows that Tris cannot express herself to help

Abnegation kids when she lines up to enter the station. Tris reluctantly backs down

when Caleb stops Tris. Caleb is afraid to see Tris helps Abnegation kids when they

are get bullied by Peter, one of the Candor member. In her old faction, she cannot

express herself to become what she wants to.

1. The Descriptions of Four’s Personality

Tobias Eaton or known as Four who works as the instructor for Dauntless

transfers initiates. He begins under a new name “Four”.

FOUR

I want to be brave and I want to be selfless... Intelligent and honest and

kind although I'm still working on "kind."


From the statement above happens when Tris curious about Four’s tattoo,

Four shows it to Tris. Four’s tattoo represents himself, Four admits that he is a

divergent and he does not want to choose any factions because he is part of those

factions. He does not want to be just one thing, he cannot. He wants to be brave,

selfless, intelligent, honest and kind. He chooses to transfer to dauntless to escape

the abusive of his father, he suffers from psychological trauma of his father. Tris

helps Tobias overcome some of his fears and anxieties. He is a dauntless instructor.

Four is another character that will be analyzed by the researcher.

a. Straightforward

Four is described as a straightforward person. The researcher finds it

through his conversations with the other characters. The way Four talks is blunt to

express his own feeling to other characters.

FOUR

Most of the time I work in intelligence, but during your training I’ll be

your instructor. My name’s Four.

CHRISTINA

Four like the number?

FOUR

Exactly like the number.

CHRISTINA

What happened? One two three were taken?

FOUR

What’s your name?

CHRISTINA

Christina.

FOUR

Well, Christina, the first lesson you learn from me, if you want to survive

here, is keep your mouth shut. Do you understand me?

CHRISTINA

Yes.

FOUR

Good.

The dialogue from this part shows how straightforward he is in expressing

his thoughts and feeling to Christina. It is happened in the Dauntless pit when Four

introduces himself as a dauntless instructor suddenly, Christina interrupts that Four

is like a number and asking the reason why is he choose Four as a name not one or

two or three. Christina is an ex candor whose personalities ranges from being

talkative and social, the Candor is known to value honesty. Actually, Christina does

not mean to make a joke of Four. Four warns Christina to shut up her mouth if she

wants to stay in Dauntless.

You ready for some real fighting?

FOUR

Not even close.

[Indistinct murmurings]

ERIC

First jumper, in the ring. Last jumper, time to fight.

MOLLY

How long do we fight for?

ERIC

Till one of you can’t continue.

FOUR

According to the old rules. The new rules: no one concedes.

FOUR

You really want to lose them on their first fight?

ERIC

A brave man never surrenders.

FOUR

Lucky for you, those weren’t the rules when we fought.


This conversation above is seen in the first combat between Tris and

Molly. Eric tells them to fight until one of them cannot continue the battle,

according to the new rules in Dauntless that they have to keep fight. Four does not

agree because they will lose them on their first fight but Eric stays still in his opinion

about let them keep fighting until one of them cannot continue. Four laughs and

says to Eric that lucky him because the rules were different like they did long time

ago, Eric was surrendered to Four. Four tells Eric to remember how weak Eric was

before. It approves that Four is a straightforward person.

FOUR

You’re weak. You have no muscle. You’re never going to win, not like

that.

TRIS

That’s good to know.

FOUR

You have to use your whole body. Keep the tension here.

Go on offense. You’re fast, so you could win if you attack first.

The statement above happens when Four sees Tris, she practices fighting

on a punching bag. Then, Four walks closer to Tris, tells her that she is weak and

has no muscle. This statement shows Four is straightforward style by telling that

Tris has never won because she is weak and has no muscle as evaluation and give

critique to Tris who has struggled with skill, but at the same time, Four tells how to

win and gives her tips on combat skills such as what moves she should use, she

should jab in the throat and at the end Four cheers Tris to keep going in her practice.

b. Rebellious

Four is a rebellious person. He has his own way to achieve his goal. Four

becomes a person who stand for his opinion and keep going on his belief. The first

rebellious act that he shows is when he starts against Erudite and the leader of

Dauntless when they attack Abnegation. Four finds out that Erudite will use

Dauntless to attack Abnegation.

FOUR

Hey. Come on, I want to show you something. Look.

TRIS

Erudite.

FOUR

Yeah. They’re here every morning. I’ve been watching them for weeks.

TRIS

What are they doing in Dauntless?

FOUR

Loading in supplies. Computers. And these.

What is it?

FOUR

I think it’s some kind of cognitive transmitter, you inject it like a serum.

TRIS

Why?

FOUR

It’s supposed to make you more susceptible to suggestion, but as many as

they have, they could create armies.


Four knows that Erudite has a plan to use Dauntless to destroy Abnegation

and kill divergents. When Erudite comes to Dauntless every morning to load in

supplies, computers and serums to create armies. Then, Erudite injects the serum

into all Dauntless people, but the serum does not work on divergent. The serum is

expected to control people to kill the Abnegation, it is controlled from a computer

program who is operated by Jeanine as the Erudite leader. Four is one of a divergent,

he does not agree with Erudite to kill abnegation and chooses to fight against

Erudite and Dauntless.

c. Brave

Four is a brave person. Dauntless emphasizes the idea of freedom from

fear. Four is a dauntless instructor. Dauntless is the virtue of bravery. Four trains

all new dauntless members to fight and use weapons to prepare their bodies to

respond to threats and challenges, which is necessary if they want to survive life as

a dauntless member.

FOUR

As Dauntless we fight to protect every life inside the fence without fail.

That’s why we train you the way we do, to teach you not to give up, and to

find out who has what it takes. I know it’s been quiet out there a few years,

but that could change at any moment. So we have to be ready for everything

The scene above shows that Four is a brave person. Dauntless trainee

makes him brave and not to give up easily. Four introduces himself as the instructor

to the transfers and tells for being Dauntless they train to be strong and brave to

survive life as a dauntless member because Dauntless are the protectors in the city.

As the instructor for new members in dauntless, it means that Four is proved as a

brave person because he has passed the trainee. Another statement that shows Four

is a brave person reveals by another character who is Will, Will’s statement below

describes how brave Four is to Tris, Christina, and Al.

You know he was first in his class. They tried to recruit him for leadership

twice, but he said no


From the statement above shows that a characteristic of a person can be

described by another character. According to Robert and Jacobs, character in

literary work is determine by other characters. By giving opinion about the

characters have and it is given directly or indirectly (1987, p. 123). In this case, Will

describes the characteristic of Four as a brave person.

B. Four’s Influence towards Tris’s Personality Development

This part of the study, the researcher tries to reveal how Four’s character

influence Tris’s personality development. According to Hurlock, there are three

major factors that may influence the development of the personality. The first is

individual’s hereditary endowment. The second is his or her experiences within the

family. The third is the important events that happen later in life outside of the home

environment (1974, p. 19). Tris is a round character since her experiences a change

when she meets Four, she changes into a new character. Usually a round character

is the main character in the story. According to Perrie, a round character can be

called as a developing character (1974, p. 71). Tris becomes a new character when

she joins the dauntless and meets Four. Her personality changes from the beginning

until the end of the story. Hurlock states that the significant people in an individual’s

life change, and when he or she tries to adapt a person’s behavior, beliefs, values,

and aspirations to theirs, changes in his or her personality pattern are inevitable

(1974, p. 126).

From the first part of the analysis, the researcher finds out how Tris’s

personality is described. Tris is described as an obedient, insecure, and

inexpressive person. Then, she changes her personality become a rebellious,

straightforward, courageous, and expressive. Here, the researcher wants to show

how Four influences Tris’s personality development and finds out the supporting

fact.

According to Boggs and Petrie there are some ways to analyze

characterization in the movie script, first is characterization through dialogue, to

know someone’s personality can be revealed based on their thought, attitude, and

emotion through their speech, second is character through external action, the most

effective characterization is achieved not by large actions in the movie but the

small actions also can become significant, third is characterization through

reactions of other characters, it means from the conversation or dialogue between

the characters, it easier to get the information about the characters (2008, pp. 61-

64). This research is focused on Tris character’s personality development as the

main character. Personality is the dynamic organization within the individual of

those psychological systems that determine his or her characteristic behavior and

thought (1974, p. 7).

1. Rebellious

In the story, Tris is a rebellious girl. Tris has his own way to achieve her

goal. She refuses to follow the rules in Dauntless. Her first rebellious act that she

shows in the story is when all the initiates practice throwing knives at targets, Al

doesn’t hit the target. Eric asks Al to go get it while everybody throws the knife to

the target. Al is afraid when the knife suddenly hit him. Tris watches it and suddenly

interrupts him. She begins to rebel against the instructor and delivers her idea by

saying “Stop. Anyone can stand in front of a target, it doesn’t prove anything” then,

Erik asks her to replace Al’s position. Through Tris’s action how she still stands on

her opinion.

TRIS

You cut me.

FOUR I meant to.

TRIS

You meant to?

FOUR

You think he was going to let you off without a scratch? You’d still be

standing there if I hadn’t hit you.

TRIS

So am I supposed to thank you?

FOUR

You’re supposed to be smart. If I wanted to hurt you, I would have.

In this scene, Tris shows her anger to Four. She begins to rebel to face Four.

Before Four leaves the room, he reminds Tris to be smart to control her emotional.

In the seven line where she said “So am I supposed to thank you?” This sentence

shows that she is rebellious girl and to the point to express her feelings. The

evidence above explains about Tris’s personality development. According to

Hurlock, change in significant people bring about personality changes, it depends

on how much the person is influenced by his/her attitude (1974, p. 126).

JEANINE

Tobias Eaton and you, Beatrice. I thought it was intellect I was sensing in

you.

FOUR

Maybe you’re not as smart as you think you are.

TRIS

Why are you attacking all these innocent people?

JEANINE

Innocent people? Abnegation if left unchecked will destroy the faction

system. Same can be said of both of you. Somebody has to stop you, if we

don’t, peace will be lost.


The conversation above happens when Tris and Four tries to attack Erudite

together when Jeannie wants to kill Abnegations through Dauntless armies who are

injected by serum to control their mind. Erudite uses simulation technology,

injected each Dauntless to murder the Abnegation. Tris wants to make all faction

life become normal and prove that divergent is not dangerous. When Jeanine wants

to destroy Abnegation and takes over the government, Tris tries to stop Jeanine.

Four helps Tris to attack Erudite.

2. Straightforward

Straightforward occurs when a person tries to say honestly and not likely to

hide their opinions. In the other word, straightforward means to the point (Merriam

Webster Dictionary, 2019).

CHRISTINA

Nice one, Al. Well, at least we tell the truth.

WILL

Erudites can tell the truth cause we have the facts.

FOUR

I don’t want to hear about your old factions. You’re Dauntless now.

TRIS

Were you a transfer too or Dauntless born?

FOUR

Are you kidding?

TRIS

No.

FOUR

What makes you think you can talk to me?

TRIS

It must be because you’re so approachable.


The scene above shows us the supporting evidence for her straightforward

personality. We can see that the way Tris talks to Four is totally different from the

beginning of the story. The conversation above shows her straightforwards when

talking to Four. In the beginning of the story, she is described as an obedient,

inexpressive who always follow her old rules in Abnegation. She also insecure with

her ability to stay in Duntless. Her old faction will not allow her to confess her

feeling because it will hurt someone’s feelings but now she is completely different

by the way she talks, which make her blurt out. She uses a language to express her

own feeling. The text above shows that Tris’s personality has changed. She turns

from a person who not often talks to everyone else becomes a person who is

straightforward about her feelings since she meets Four, she thinks that Four is a

friendly person.

3. Courageous

Four’s character contributes in changes in significant people towards Tris’s

personality. In the story, Tris faces many problems in Dauntless. It can be seen

when she gets pressure to work hard because her score is in the red line. According

to Eric, at the end of each stage of training, the lowest ranking initiates will be

leaving Dauntless (Daugherty & Taylor, 2014, lines 412-413). Tris thinks that she

is the weakest one. This statement happens after Tris is beaten by Molly, Tris sits

in the ring with an ice pack on her face. She loses her first combat. Eric leads the

rest of the initiates to see the ranking board. Tris looks at the board and sees her

name in red at the bottom of the board with a score of 32. Tris feels insecure with

her skill. She doubts that she can pass her training in Dauntless.

FOUR

You’re weak. You have no muscle. You’re never going to win, not like that.

TRIS

That’s good to know.

FOUR

You have to use your whole body. Keep the tension here.

TRIS

Okay.

FOUR

The scene above happens when Four notices Tris as he walks by when Tris

tries to improve her training. Tris decides to practice on a punching bag while

everyone else is asleep. Four helps Tris by giving her advices. Four really care about

Tris’s problem. Four cheers Tris up to work hard because of his motivation, Tris

becomes braver to prove her courageous as a Dauntless. Hurlock states that

motivation can improve the personality pattern of someone (1974, 127). Tris gets a

strong motivation from Four. Four shows that he cares to Tris.

The other development on Tris’s personality is courageous characteristic.

The next part is to show more about her new personality. Another way to see the

characteristic of the person is by seeing what the characters do based on action of

the characters signal the personality of the doer about character’s behavior to

determine what the quality that the characters have. The evidence appears when

Tris gives her plan by climbing the wheel to get a good vantage and Four starts to

follow her then they find spot the flag. Tris’s ability to believe in herself to win.

TRIS

Look. There it is.

FOUR

Alright, what’s your plan?

TRIS

We’ll split into two groups. We’ll go up this side and leave the rest of you

to engage Eric.


From the conversation above Tris shows her courageous to climb the wheel

with Four, when Four as a leader asks about the strategy to attack Eric’s team, Tris

gets an idea and goes over to the Ferris wheel nearby. She tells about her idea by

climbing the wheel to find out where Eric’s team put their flag, she starts to climb

when Four calls out to her. By climbing the Ferris wheel, she tries to get a good

vantage point and Four starts follows her then they go higher until Tris spots the

flag where Eric’s team put their flag. She is not afraid of the weight while Four is

afraid to go higher and asks her to stop but, Tris says that they need to go higher.

After that she gives a plan to her team to attack Eric’s team. Four’s team moves

closes to Eric’s team then Eric’s team start to shoot at Four’s team. Christina and

Tris go in one direction then Christina gets surprised by Peter is ready to shoot her

but Tris helps Christina, they shoot Peter and run off to the tower where the flag is

and run up. Tris gets to the top where Moli is guarding the flags and Tris fight and

grabs the flag, she waves it and her team happy because they are win. Tris shows

her courageous and she is sure enough to do the things she always hesitates to do.

According to Hurlock, the significant people play a role importance in

forming the person’s self-concept (1974, p. 126). It means that the significant

people may causes a person’s personality changes.

Congratulations.

TRIS

FOUR

You know I wanted to say to you that you did good tonight. You were

brave.

TRIS

This condition makes Tris’s personality is change. She becomes a

courageous girl who is confident with her decisions. Tris gets motivation from Four

by saying “Congratulations. You know I wanted to say to you that you did good

tonight. You were brave”, Four’s statement makes Tris has a spirit of life and

becomes more confident with her decision. Four becomes the significant people in

Tris’s life.

Another scene that shows Four helps Tris to prove her courageous to pass

the simulation test. In Dauntless, Four is a part of an important person, it means that

he has a power in Dauntless. The attention and Four’s feeling towards Tris which

can changes Tris’s personality. Four’s existence has changed Tris’s life. Four

becomes a significant person who influences towards Tris’s personality

development.

Shut the door. You’re going to practice.

TRIS

In my fear landscapes?

FOUR

No, in mine. We go in together.

TRIS

Have you ever done this before?

FOUR

No, I haven’t.

TRIS

Are you sure you want to.

FOUR

Why wouldn’t I?


The conversation above shows that, Four helps Tris to practice the

simulation for test. Four helps Tris because Four doesn’t want to see Tris fails in

the final test and become a factionless. They go together in Four’s fear landscapes

then he injects himself and Tris with a serum because Four loves Tris. Four helps

Tris to practice her fears through his landscape. Tris learns how to face her fears

like a Dauntless do. When Tris is on Four landscape, she tells Four to jump because

this situation is not real. Four tells Tris that divergent would jump, but dauntless

would get to the building. If Tris wants to pass the test, Four advices Tris to do

everything the way a Dauntless would do and tries to find tool to survive. Four

teaches Tris in how Dauntless method to finish the simulation test so, her divergent

identity keeps hidden.

ERIC

The legendary Four, a mindless drone. You were first in your, class now

you’re nothing.

MAX

What? You think he might be…?

ERIC

There’s one way to find out. Say goodbye, asshole.

TRIS

Goodbye.


This scene happens when Tris wakes up in the middle of the night to find

all the other new members getting dressed, she looks over to Christina. Tris quickly

realizes that everyone’s mind is controlled. Tris tries to blend with others, gets

dressed and joins the others. In the train, Tris notices Four and slowly makes her

way over to him, as she stands next to him he takes hold of her hand. After the train

stops at Abnegation, Tris starts to go to her home. Tris shows her courageous to

save Four from Eric. Eric wants to kill Four. When Eric starts to point his gun at

Four’s head. Suddenly, Tris points her gun at Eric. She thinks that Four is the

important person in her life because Four helps her to be a better person and she

falls in love with him.

4. Expressive

Tris’s personality has changed from an inexpressive girl becomes an

expressive girl. It can be seen through her feelings towards Four. She starts to fall

in love with Four and tries to believe in Four.

Good. Where did you go yesterday?

TRIS

To see my brother.

FOUR

It’s getting a little boring for you here, is it?

TRIS

My brother said that he thinks Erudite’s is planning to overthrow

Abnegation. Do you think they could do that?

FOUR

Yeah, I do. I think it’s possible. Depends on how far they’re willing to go.

TRIS

I’m worried about my parents.

FOUR

Yeah. But I think you got other things you need to worry about. Don’t

you?

TRIS

Yeah. I should go.


From the text above shows that Tris has changed. She feels comfortable to

tell her worries to Four. Four changes Tris by talking to her. At first she doubts to

tell about her problem to Four, but she can tell a lot. Four’s attention makes her feel

so confident. She starts to express her feeling slowly to Four.

TRIS

Four, stop! Stop! Stop. Please. It’s me. It’s me. It’s me. It’s okay. I love

you. Four, look at me. Look at me. It’s me. It’s me. It’s me.

FOUR

Tris.


This scene above happens when Four’s mind is in under control by Erudites

to see how far the serum can control divergent’s mind. Four beats Tris many times,

Four also tries to kill Tris. Tris knows that Four is in under control by Erudites and

Tris tries to fight back then she grabs the gun fallen on the ground and points it at

him as he goes to attack her again but suddenly Four shows signs of fighting against

the serum. Four wakes up and tries to control his mind. It shows that Tris is in love

with Four. It seems that Tris wants Four to wakes up from mind’s control under the

Erudites because of the power of love. Four wakes up and he begins to recognize

her and then Four turns and shoots at them, Tris picks up a knife and helps to attack

Erudites. Tris watches the monitors as the Dauntless and grabs hold of Jeanine to

stop it before many people will die. Tris comes to attack Erudite and save Four.

Four influences Tris to be brave, it can be seen from the way she comes to Erudite

and fights with Erudite.

TRIS

My Mom and Dad died today. They’re gone.

FOUR

I know. But they loved you, Tris. For them there was no better way to

show you.

TRIS

We have nothing. We have no home, no faction. I don’t even know who I

am anymore.

FOUR

I know exactly who you are.

TRIS

Are you sure about that?

FOUR

Yeah, I’m very sure. Come here.


This conversation appears in the end of the story, Tris knows that Four has

changed her life. Tris loves Four. They support each other to destroy Erudite. Four

expresses his feelings that he loves Tris. When Tris gives up with her choice, Four

strengthens her when she gives up to stay in Dauntless. It shows that Four really

influence Tris’s personality development. Four encourages Tris to get through all

her problems. Four helps Tris to change and he realizes that he loves Tris. So, Four

wants Tris to stay with him.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION

In this study, the researcher analyzes Four’s influence towards Tris’s

personality development as seen in Divergent movie script. In order to analyze

Tris’s personality development, first the researcher finds that Tris’s characteristics

in the story. She lives an abnegation with her parents and brother. She is obedient,

insecure, and inexpressive. Meanwhile, Four’s characteristic are brave, rebellious,

and straightforward.

In order to answer the second questions, the researcher uses the theory of

personality development by Elizabeth Hurlock to discover Tris’s personality

development. Tris personality has changed in Dauntless. Tris’s personality changes

into straightforward, brave and confident. Tris chooses to transfer to Dauntless and

leave her family. She dares to do what she likes to get a better life.

The researcher concludes that Tris’s personality development is related to

Four as a significant person. Four gives advices and changes Tris to become brave

to make a decicision. Four always besides Tris to help her. Four is one of the reason

that makes Tris become a new person. Tris has faced her hard times in Dauntless,

then Four helps and teaches Tris. The power of love can makes someone changes

his/her personality because there is a reason why someone’s behavior can changes.

Finally, it can be concluded that Tris’s personality develops when she meets

Four. Tris becomes rebellious, straightforward, courageous, and expressive. Tris’s

personality development is related to the significant person who is Four. Four brings

a lot of influence to Tris and he also helps Tris to change to be a better person. Tris

stops Jeanine to destroy the Abnegation.

APPENDIX

Appendix 1: Summary of the Divergent Movie Script

Divergent is a 2014 American dystopian science fiction action film directed

by Neil Burger. The movie is adapted from the novel by Veronica Roth. The movie

script is written by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor. The script is downloaded

from subscene.com. Beatrice Prior or Tris is the girl from Abnegation who is

transfer into Dauntless. This story is about a city that are divided into five factions

which are Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Erudite, and Dauntless based on personality

characteristics. Factions is groups of people that divided based on their skill and

ability. Society has system to makes they live in peace. Every teenage boy and girl,

at the age of sixteen has to decide whether they remain with their parents in the

factions where they grew up, or whether they would like to transfer to another

faction.

At the beginning of the story, Tris is an obedient person, but her personality

drastically change when she meets Four. Four is a dauntless instructor. Four starts

to have feeling on Tris. In the end, Four and Tris start against Erudite and the leader

of Dauntless when they make a plan to attack Abnegation. The Erudite wants to

take over the government and the Abnegation who run it.
