The Importance Of First Aid And CPR Training

In The Workplace

Many business provide health and safety training in the workplace – but something is often overlooked…

First Aid and CPR Training!

Even though 25% of all emergency room visits can be avoided with basic first aid and CPR certification…

First aid and CPR are rarely taught in the workplace.

Having trained employees can make a substantial difference in your ability to maintain a safe work environment.

They will be able to respond more quickly and effectively when medical emergencies occur.

And in these situations, time is critical!

As your staff become more prepared and responsive – they also become more aware of their surroundings and more likely to spot potential hazards.

Adequate first aid training is not optional. It is required by OSHA:

In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid. Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available.

This applies to ANY industry of ANY size!

What can you do to prepare your workforce?

Provide Proper Training

But first and foremost, commit to providing your employees with proper training!

Keep Updated – Continued Training

The retention of first aid and CPR training declines within only a few months!

How can you keep it fresh in your employees’ minds between recertification courses?

1. Host short practice sessions with small groups every other month.

This would give your employees a chance to refresh their skills and learn new first aid techniques.

2. Post or share information on specific first aid topics in breakrooms, by email, social media.

Or share stories from the news of how people made a difference by knowing first aid.

This can get your employees thinking about their training!

3. Consider sending one person, or a small group of employees, to get certified as an instructor.

They would then be able to lead review sessions and host recertification classes for employees.

This generally costs less in the long term.

And provides a more convenient way to get employees trained.

Keep Updated – Supplies & Equipment

First aid kit should be examined regularly to replace expired items or those supplies that have been used up.

If you have AEDs on site – be aware that they do have shelf lives, even when they have not been used.

Check your AEDs often to make sure they are in proper working order.

Each device is different, so follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance and servicing.

Check battery levels for the charge pack.

And the pads themselves also have expiration dates.

The cost of first aid and CPR training for your workforce is minimal compared to the benefits it can bring.

Training will go a long way to ensuring the health and safety of your employees.
