Pastor’s Page

Then Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny

himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his

life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Matthew

16:24-25

March 5th is Ash Wednesday, a day marking the beginning of the 40 days

of the season we call lent. Whereas advent is a season of preparation for

the coming Messiah lent is also a season of preparation, preparation for the

coming kingdom of the Messiah. The forty days of lent (excluding Satur-

days because it is the Sabbath day and Sundays because, in the church,

every Sunday is a ‘little Easter’) marks the number of days that Noah and

his family were in the arc having been delivered from the flood, the num-

ber of years that Israel wandered the wilderness having been delivered out

of Egypt, and the number of days that Jesus was fasting in the wilderness at

the time during which he overcame the temptations of the devil.

For centuries, the church has seen fit to observe the season of lent with a

fast. Fasting is a spiritual disciple the aim of which is the train one’s body

into submission so as to overcome some aspect of worldliness and to re-

member that there’s more to life than meets the eye. Over the years this

season of fasting has changed in such a way that you find one thing in your

life to fast from, but not just anything, something that actually means

something to you and would actually offer you a challenge and, in the end,

might actually lead to better (healthier) living.

There are all kinds of things that we face in the world that prevent us from

having a fuller, healthier life with God and with each other. Our Wednes-

day evening Lenten series will focus on just such issues. Our Wednesday

night series, Facing the Cross, begins on Ash Wednesday where we’ll talk

about facing and dealing with the reality of sin. In the following weeks we

will talk about facing and dealing with temptation, fear, worldliness, each

other (relationships), and suffering.

Please make plans to join me on Wednesday, March 5th at 7pm for a ser-

vice with the imposition of ashes and on each of the following five

Wednesday evenings for a soup supper at 6:30 and worship using Holden

Evening Prayer as we, together, take up our crosses and follow our Master

in this Lenten pilgrimage to Calvary.

Your partner in ministry,

Pastor Kris

P.S. Just a reminder that March is our North American Lutheran Semi-

nary month. Each week you will see a flier in your bulletin highlighting

some aspect of the new seminary and we will be having a special collec-

tion to help financially support the seminary as it gets off the ground in

this its first year of ministry.

Journey

I wish Easter would come a little later in the year. It seems like we just

get Jesus out of diapers and then He's heading to Jerusalem. It just

would be better if we had a little more time with him. Get to know Him

better. I wish he was on Facebook and Instagram. Wouldn't it be cool

to see some Jesus selfies? Or postings like, "Here I am hanging with my

buddies at the Jordan." Or if He tweeted, Just healed 10 lepers, only one

said thanks. #whatsupwiththat #doyougetthemeaningoftheparable. Je-

sus, by the way, can cure us all of our leprocies, like envy, greed, glut-

tony, gossip and whatever it is that you do that you know is wrong.

I hope you don't think I'm too irreverent, my mind just goes to places

like that sometimes.

In adult class we are working on a study called the Cross, discussing

related topics around the crucification. By the way it's never to late to

join our class. This past week we looked at the last supper. It's one of

the most meaningful, deep and amazing sacraments - rituals - celebra-

tions that we have in the church. God in His ultimate mercy, finally and

lovingly provided that one sacrifice that undid that original sin that we

all share in. All those attempts to find a way for man to become right-

eous in God's eyes that always failed, were finally, completely and per-

fectly met with the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. His body and blood,

broken and poured out for us to pay OUR penalty for OUR sins. How

humbling to think on that as we receive the body and blood, bread and

wine given for us. What an amazing God we have. There is only one

thing we can do to receive that gift - believe.

This Easter season, I encourage you to think on these things as you par-

take of the Holy Supper.

#believetorecieve.

John

Women’s Ministries

The Sew Caring work day held on Saturday, January 25th was a wonder-

fully successful day of working together to benefit women dealing with the

effects of cancer treatments. Our sewing assembly line yielded 80 chest

pillows and the knitting and crocheting hands whipped out at least 25 hats.

Amazing! The finished projects will be donated to our local Sisterhood of

Survivors support group. Many thanks to Laura Nielsen for her great or-

ganizing and prepping that allowed us to complete so many fine projects

very efficiently. While hands were busy, fellowship was enjoyed and the

day flew by.

On Sunday February 9th author and friend, Virginia Pilegard, joined us for

lunch and book signing of her first novel, Loving Sunny. Virginia offered a

little background about her writing and shared beautiful pearls of wisdom

regarding love and forgiveness. She so generously offered her books to us

at cost as a fundraiser. The profit will be shared between typhoon relief in

the Philippines through Lutheran World Relief and sanctuary roof repair.

God is good all the time! Unbeknown to us, Virginia’s companion was

from the Philippines and had recently returned from a visit there. We

heard firsthand details about the devastation in that tiny island nation and

received overflowing gratitude for supporting the relief effort.

We are invited to attend the WELCA Conference Spring Event on Satur-

day, March 22nd at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (Fruit Ave. just N. of

Shaw Ave.) from 8:30-lunch. The guest speaker is Pastor Susan Briehl

who has served at Holden Village and PLU campus ministry in Washing-

ton. The theme is “Water for Life” and is based on John 4:10-14. Regis-

tration is $15 and is due by March 17th. Please sign up in the foyer and fill

out the short registration form. Childcare will be provided if needed.

Signs of spring are bursting around us and our Lenten journey begins soon.

Perhaps you desire to add a spiritual practice this Lenten season. Our Bi-

ble study opportunities continue:

Thursday mornings at 10:00 in the church library “Mary Heart in a

Martha World”

Faith Circle – Monday, March 10th at 7:00 PM at the home of

Conversation Circles

Conversation Circles meet on Wednesday evenings, 6:30 – 7:30, in

Grace Hall to help those who wish to improve English conversation

and literacy skills. We have about 10 learners meeting regularly, with

2-5 children who need help with homework or just being kept busy

while their moms are in class. We need some help! If you can spare an

hour, even if just occasionally, on Wednesdays, helping with child care,

conversing with the more fluent learners, or helping with tutoring those

who are still trying to speak English (some conversational Spanish

needed for tutoring), please contact Betty Moore, 859-0306.

During Lent, March 5 – April 9, Conversation Circle will meet at 6 pm

to study English, then at 6:30 our learners will be invited to join us for

Soup Supper and Lenten service. Please welcome them and engage

them in conversation; their stories of hard work and dedication to learn-

ing and improving are inspiring.

Serving in His name,

Betty Moore

Easton Neighborhood Market

The churches in Easton continue to work together to distribute

food donated by the Community Food Bank. On February 4th

we had 30 volunteers from over 5 different churches in the

Easton and Fresno area. The volunteers worked together four

hours distributing food to 486 households.

The distribution can be exhausting but exhilarating at the same

time. Many lives are helped by the generous donations of fresh

produce and food to these families in need. Thank you to all of

our volunteers from our church as well as the community.

The next distribution will be on March 4th from 1:00-4:00PM.

Volunteers are asked to sign up on the sheet in the church entry-

way. Many hands make for light work. If you have Immanuel t

-shirts or Christian Logo type shirts please wear them to help

spread the glory to God.

Thank You Immanuel

To Immanuel Lutheran Church,

I just want to thank everyone who helped to support my sandwich fund-

raiser! I was able to raise the funds to finish paying for my trip to the East

Coast with the AVID and Health Institute students from WUHS. We will

visit five universities, and as many landmarks as possible in Philadelphia,

Washington DC, and New York City. Please keep us in your prayers as

we travel from April 12-19.

Thank you again!

Alex Gardner

Dear Council Members and Members of Immanuel,

Thank you so much for the tickets to see Hello Dolly. I invited Victoria to

go with me and we enjoyed the show very much. I also want to thank

you for the opportunity given me to serve as Financial Secretary. It has

been an interesting experience and I have enjoyed it very much.

May God bless you all,

Lois Rasmussen

Dear Immanuel,

Thank you all very much for your calls, cards, and lov-

ing prayers for me as I mourn the loss of my daughter

Kathy. Your support has blessed me so much.

Virginia Harker

Thank you for the projector repair. The service is greatly enhanced with

our big screen visible again. Thank you!

Thank you to our outgoing council members for their

service: Shane Johnson, Jill Ellingson, Linda Gutierrez,

Lois Rasmussen and Brian Shaffer.

Thank you to Virginia Pilegard for her book presenta-

tion on February 9th.

News Notes

Happy Birthday to PHYLLIS PETERSEN on her 89th birthday March

15th

Congratulations to CLIFFORD & LLEWELLYN OSTERGARD on their

30th wedding anniversary on March 17th.

JOHN & SHARON REYNOLDS took a short trip the end of January

called "Yellowstone in Winter". They flew to Salt Lake City on Saturday

where they met their tour group. On Sunday they attended the live per-

formance of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's "Music and the Spoken

Word". They then traveled to West Yellowstone for the night. On Mon-

day snow coaches came to the hotel and picked everyone up. Yellow-

stone is closed in the winter to vehicular travel so the only way to see it is

by tour on a snow coach or by snowmobile. It was beautiful. They saw

lots of bison and elk, and a wolf. After the tour they traveled to Jackson,

WY, where they spent 2 nights. Jackson was a tad bit cold....-17 on

Tuesday morning. But it was sunny and clear. On Wednesday the group

left Jackson and traveled back to Salt Lake City, stopping along the way

in Park City at the Olympic training center for bobsled/luge/skeleton/ski

jumping. It was a great trip.

ISABELLA ANGEL CASTRO was baptized at Immanuel on Super

Bowl Sunday. Her mother is Misti Castro, daughter of Martha Miranda

and Velia Miranda. Her sponsors are Yolanda Giminez, Jeannette Fierro

and Melissa Martinez. Following the Baptism the family and friends en-
