A wide range of academic vocabulary used well and with minimal errors. Focus on using good vocabulary not just easy words.


What does the examiner want to hear?

EXAMPLE

Good: My hometown is a small city, the people are friendly and it has many beautiful beaches.

Better: My hometown is quite a small city with a population of about 500,000 people. The people are very friendly, my town is a coastal city and it has quite a few scenic beaches.



A variety of grammar structures, complex sentences and lots of error free sentences. Range and variety is more important than accuracy.



EXAMPLE

Good: I wake up at 6am and then I have a shower. I eat breakfast at 7am and then I go to work. I finish work at 5pm and drive home.

Better: Usually I wake up at 6am and then immediately take a shower. After showering, I enjoy a quick breakfast, which is usually eggs on toast, before starting my journey to work. My commute home from work begins at 5pm and takes about 30 minutes.




Clear and easy to understand

pronunciation with good chunking, stress

and intonation. Accents and some

errors don’t matter so much.

Answers which address each part of

the test suitably. Make your answers

for each part the correct length and

answer the question.

Good communication skills which make it easy to understand the speaker. Smile, make eye and use a friendly tone of voice

during the test.
