DE SIGN BY CRISTINA DELEON

Welcome to our 10th Anniversary of IEI Festival!! My vision of the first event in 2004 remains crystal clear with humble beginnings of 14 participants and 4 staff. My heartfelt thanks go to those 14 that had the courage to attend and help start something special that has helped create a lifetime of friendships around the world, a trail of inspiration that has led to numerous professional musicians, and a plethora of players that have gained insight into being the best they can be. It warms my heart and soul to see this dream achieved and I thank YOU for being a part of this grand tradition of excellence, motivation, and global camaraderie. You join a special group of people from around the world. I am pleased to say that 2013 represents our largest year ever with 72 registered participants. When combined with our participant numbers from the previous nine years, our registrations number just over 400!!

For this 10th Anniversary Festival, I wanted to feature a number of great aspects of our time together. These range from our first international guest artist, Jukka Myllys, to two of the original participants from the 2004 IEI Festival that are now world class performing artists, Jamie Lipton and Chris Buckley. Then some of our most popular teachers Brian Bowman and David Childs are paired with some new faces of James Jackson, Dan Perantoni, Petri Keskitalo, and Patricio Cosentino.

My most sincere thanks to the guest artists, THE pianists Caryl and Magi, Karen Mullins, and Janet Frey for her patience with my late hours and intense focus. Enjoy the music, learn much, and be inspired!!

AdAm Fre y, Artistic Director

His grandfather, John was born in the Welsh Valleys and was a well-respected euphonium player who inspired his sons, Robert & Nicholas to play euphonium. Robert began teaching his son David from an early age and today David is widely regarded as one of the finest brass soloists of his generation.

Mercury Orkestar Atlanta’s Balkan Brass Band

Circa 2007 Erik Kofoed, Miranda Dohrman, Paul Poovey, and Bill Pritchard were searching for a way to use their musical talents to connect more directly and viscerally with our audiences. How could we be rock stars on Alto horn, Clarinet, Trumpet, or Tuba? Inspired by Serbian

and Romanian brass bands, we combined our love of Balkan and Pop music and decided to bring it to The People in a no-electricity-required, turbo-charged brass instrument delivery system! Thus, Mercury Orkestar was born.

We go where the audiences are; playing in recital halls, beer halls, and community gatherings. We’ve played at the Atlanta Arts Festival, Smith’s Olde Bar, The 5 Spot, the International Euphonium Institute, Red Light Cafe, 5 Seasons Brewing, the Grant Park Summer Shade Festival, the Atlanta Food Truck Park, and house parties all over Atlanta.

We released our debut recording in January 2013 and it features 4 original, danceable tracks that merge traditional Balkan music with Pop and Jazz and captures the high energy, virtuoso playing, and wild improvisation that we’re known for. We have also performed and recorded with members of the Zac Brown Band, and can be heard on Coy Bowles’ CD Love Takes Flight.

When you need something to brighten your day, Mercury Orkestar is there to deliver with fun music and lively performances. Our spitfire trumpets, wailing clarinets, and booming tubas are guaranteed to make you move.

Mercury Orkestar is the ultimate party band!

Fusing Middle Eastern rhythms, Gypsy flair, and Germanic precision, Mercury Orkestar brings virtuosic skill to bear on traditional Balkan music as well as disturbingly fun Pop music covers.

Their spitfire trumpets, wailing clarinets and booming tubas are guaranteed to make you move.
