It is my very great pleasure to welcome you to the Home-Start 2018 Choral Concert in the glorious surroundings of York Minster, in aid of Home-Start York. Voices from choirs rising together with the Home-Start Orchestra, the Jazz Group and the Minster Grand Organ. This evening promises to be an extraordinary celebration of musical collaboration.

Home-Start, founded on the principle of families helping families, is a charity that sits at the heart of the communities it serves, much as the Minster lies at the heart of our city as a place of celebration, praise and reflection. Choral singing mirrors so many of Home-Start’s philosophies: collaboration, mutual support and the joy of joining with others to achieve something inspiring. It is particularly fitting that this evening’s performers are raising funds in support of families living in difficult circumstances. Choirs, the Minster and Home-Start, fit very harmoniously together!

I thank all of the choirs and their Musical Directors, without their combined enthusiasm and dedication this concert would not be possible; and the soloists, the presenter and narrator Harry Gration and all the wonderful musicians accompanying the choirs. Thank you also to Richard Shephard, composer of the Spacious Firmament, Concert Director Andrew Wright and Rachel Derbyshire, who will be conducting the Junior Choirs and our voluntary organising team, for their generous commitment in support of the event.

We are also grateful to the Dean, the Very Reverend Vivienne Faull, and Chapter of York for permitting the concert to take place in this very special building, and to the Minster staff for all of their kind assistance.

However, most importantly, thank you, our audience, for supporting what promises to be an enjoyable evening of music and singing, and for helping Home-Start to help so many.

Thank you

Jonah-Man JazzMichael Hurd (1928-2006)

Michael Hurd did not invent the pop cantata, but he was undoubtedly a pioneer in composing brief, witty, sometimes challenging and above all performable choral music for children to enjoy. When Jonah-Man Jazz arrived in 1966 to supplement the usual diet of sea shanties, folk songs and spirituals, young singers and their teachers had modern-sounding music to make and share. Pastiche jazz, blues and rock ‘n’ roll rhythms, memorable tunes and entertaining lyrics proved a winning combination.

Jonah-Man Jazz, a delightful romp, had its première in December 1966 with the boys of Bexley-Erith Technical School. Bouncing us through the biblical tale of Jonah, the composer noted, “There is no point in approaching the work in any other spirit than the determination to have fun.” Providing his own libretto enabled Hurd to indulge in outrageous wordplay (“Jonah had a whale of a time”) and this piece is by far his best known and most frequently performed.

RequiemGabriel Faure (1845-1924)

Introit et Kyrie; Offertoire; Sanctus; Pie Jesu; Agnus Dei; Libera Me; In Paradisium.

Faure’s Requiem is one of the most popular choral works in Britain. It is a much more reflective work than usual for this genre and is scored for solo violin, two viola parts together with two cello parts and horns, harp and organ giving it a marvellous richness of texture. Along with the choir, there are two soloists: Soprano and Bass.

Holding a prestigious post as an organist as well as being director of the Paris Conservatoire meant that Fauré had to retreat to the countryside in the summer to concentrate on composing. He began his Requiem in 1887 and revised and expanded it over the years until its final version dating from 1901.

Elgar tried to get the Requiem performed at the Three Choirs Festival, but it was not performed in Britain until 1937, nearly fifty years after the first performance.

We all believe children deserve the best start in life in order to achieve their full potential, and that parents and families play the key role in providing the care and nurture essential for this, particularly in the early years.

Home-Start volunteers, who are all parents themselves, visit families with young children within their own home for a few hours each week offering support, friendship, and practical help in situations as diverse as isolation, bereavement, multiple births, illness, disability or when families are finding parenting a struggle.

Last year the Home-Start volunteers gave over one thousand nine hundred and fifty-three hours of their time to families in our City. They gave non-judgmental practical and emotional support and helped build the family’s confidence and ability to cope. If you would like to know more about how you could help our work please contact us at [email protected], telephone us on 01904 674 764 or write to: Home-Start York, 49 Cemetery Road, York YO10 5AJ.
