During the 60’s the music videos consisted of the artist or band members upon a stage or in front of a background as though they are performing live. This style remained consistent throughout the sixties.

Page 6: The History of Music

1960’S During the summer of love in 1967, young people descended on San Francisco and other destinations "with flowers in their hair" with free-flowing dresses with country prints were popular among young women. It was a time to protest the war in Vietnam by day, then chill out in open parties at night the Rolling Stones made the songs that captured the times.

Mixed with this was the growing beach culture and its surfing music. It was surfing and sun all day, then beach parties all night, well known via The Beach Boys.

Curiously added to this mixture was the arrival of a group from Liverpool to America and the rest of the world, know as The Beatles. They evolved alongside from young-teen sounds like "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to the more grown-up strains of "Hey Jude.“ the band was known for their rock/pop culture.

The 60’s was a decade of mixture of genres form flower power to surf and rock’N’roll until the late 60’s to early 70’s was the Mods and Rockers.

See how music began to become an influence upon its listeners as it sculpts the personality of listeners portrayed in Mods and Rockers that were two conflicting British Youth subcultures. The rockers listened to rock and roll culture from Bo Diddley however the Mods was 1960’s music based from soul, rhythm and blues.

1970’S MOST ICONIC MUSIC VIDEOS

The Bee Gees- Stayin’ alive, in the 70’s the idea of shot doubling (layering shots) and effects came about, the use of bright colours and quick shot changes ranging from artist singing (remaining from the 60’s) and adding shots of cities and cars to fit the genre. In one decade the music video have began to change by adding in effects and cutting from shot to shot, use of vibrant colours.Queen- Bohemian Rhapsody, used the layering shots of the band with the main singer on top, during the 70’s most used effect and transition of the shots is jump (cut) shot and the use of layering. Also, seen in this video the use of elongated shots and fade in fade out transition to add effect to the genre.

Page 11: The History of Music

1970’S Within looking at the videos I have learnt that in one decade see similarities within the use of keeping the artist singing (seen performing) however the introduction of different shots and transition have made an appearance and the arise of vibrant colours. I like the use of the layering shot seen in the 70’s videos adds effect and draws in the viewer.

Many strands of music wee woven together in the 70s. One of those threads was contributed by Led Zeppelin, including Stairway to Heaven. Another thread was brought by Bruce Springsteen, whose working-class roots were strongly infused in his driven ballads like Born to Run. Evidently the thread with the most social impact is disco.

Echoes of the 60s seemed to play out during the 70s, with Simon & Garfunkel, the Beatles, and Marvin Gaye producing new sounds for an evolving time. Disco reached its peak in 1977 with the Bee Gees and Stayin' Alive. But after that people seemed more focused on growing into their responsibilities, with young families and young careers that needed tending. The music of the time went off into different directions, with many different sounds and artists.

2000’S MOST ICONIC MUSIC VIDEOS Carly Rae Jepson’s popular hit. A simple narrative about a girl who likes a guy only to find out he is gay. It is simple yet effective and includes the interests of the intended audience. A topless guy is aimed to attract and entice the female teens of today and Carly’s character is designed to entice the male audience, it’s simple, inexpensive and easy to watch without too much thinking, which is probably why it is quite popular. However, it lacks creativity and anything unique, it doesn’t feature anything which stands out and impresses you. It is just a simple narrative, which is why it is suitable for a younger age group as well.
