The history of fashion design What is fashion design? Fashion design is a form of art. By this I mean putting you creation to clothes instead of a paper. Modern fashion design is divided into two basic categories: haute couture and ready- to-wear. Haute couture is meant by collection is dedicated to certain customers and is custom sized to fit these customers exactly. A haute couture as to at least make new collection of the design. The designer has to be part of the Syndical Chamber for Haute Couture and show a new collection twice a year presenting a minimum of 35 different outfits each time. Ready-to-wear collections are standard sized, not custom made, so they are more suitable for large production runs. Both ready-to-wear and haute-couture collections are presented on international catwalks. First ever fashion show The first fashion designer was Charles Frederick Worth, in the 19 th century. He set up his first fashion design house in Paris, but before that clothing was made by anonymous dressmakers where the fashion standard were derived from the styles to be worn by royalty. Frederick worth was the first designer to dictate to his customers what to wear instead of following the rules and demands. His fashion house became really famous. This was the beginning of the tradition of having a designer of a house not only create clothing. Fashion in the 1940’s In the 1940’s because of war years they had to make do with what ever you had available to make clothes. During that time women began to wear trousers for practicability and convenience. At the time, it was trendy to appear in uniforms, so much so, that they were worn to special events and ceremonies.
