A letter from the Executive Director…

August is here and I have made it through my first month as your Executive Director. It has been a pleasure for me to be a part of the The Hearth at Hendersonville and get to know our residents and staff. I am coming to Hendersonville from Huntsville, Alabama. My husband and I are looking forward to moving to the Hendersonville community. I have 30 years of experience in the health care industry. I am a registered nurse and have my nursing home administrator license as well as assisted living administrator license. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Nursing and a Master’s degree in Health Services Administration. I have served as Executive Director of retirement communities in South Carolina and Alabama. I am married to Ron Olson and we have three children, a son-in-law, granddaughter and a grandson due to be born in December. I love to read and enjoy music and spending time with my family. I am originally from North Carolina and moved to Nashville 20 yrs ago. I have been a Respiratory Therapist since 1988 and began doing sales/marketing about 12 yrs ago. My background is in Durable Medical Equipment and Homecare. I am very passionate about health and fitness and enjoy going to the gym regularly and doing personal training in my spare time. I also enjoy working in my yard and flowers.

Pickle Award Winner!!

Linda Garret Linda Garret is July’s Pickle Award

winner. Linda is our receptionist and has worked for the Hearth for many

years. She enjoys greeting our families and residents. She loves to

dance, create tissue flowers and crafts with our residents, and is instrumental in the “Downtown

Abbey” Ladies tea at The Hearth. She received a beautiful tea pot and

Pickle award certificate. Congratulations Linda! Keep up the

great work!

Resident Spotlight

Dorothy Ray

She was born Dorothy Elizabeth Williams in New Middleton, Tennessee. As a child she grew up in Nashville. Dorothy's father passed away when she was four years old. Her mother worked until she was 75 years old and always told Dorothy and her sister Roberta that she raised them both by telephone. Dorothy graduated in 1945 from Central High School in Nashville. She was very active in the Central High Alumni Group after her graduation. She was an Executive Secretary for most of her career and loved every aspect of her job. Dorothy and her husband, Frank, of 63 years, met at a YWCA sponsored dance in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. She married at age 19 and had one son, Randy who lives in Gurnee, Illinois. For their married life they lived in Gurnee, Illinois and at retirement moved back to the Nashville area. Decorating, reading, travel, and politics are things Dorothy loves. She is very close to her sister, Roberta, and her nephew, who live close by. She is proud to tell you that it was her nephew that decorated her apartment. Ask Dorothy about her life and she will say ... "If I had my life to live over I would live it exactly the way it was and not change a thing" ... She loves living at the Hearth and says that the "friendliness" of the residents made her feel immediately comfortable when she moved in. Dorothy, thank you for choosing The Hearth as your home ... we are very glad to have you as a part of the Hearth family.

Making the Most Out of Visiting Your Loved One in

Memory Care

Finding new ways to visit and interact with a loved one residing in Memory Care can be challenging. Your loved one may not be able to do or understand the things you used to enjoy together, but there are many ways to have loving, meaningful visits. The Memory Care staff at the Hearth Communities can assist you in making the most out of your visits. Remember to keep things simple. A visit does not need to be complicated or long to be meaningful. Your loved one may be more easily overwhelmed by asking too many questions, giving them too many tasks to complete, or having too many visitors at once. Try finding a quiet place to visit. During this time, you could look at family pictures together, listen to their favorite music, or walk through the gardens to view the flowers. You may also enjoy bringing in their favorite foods to enjoy together. Sometimes the right words are hard to find, or conversations seems difficult for your loved one, or perhaps even for you. Simply sitting quietly holding your loved one’s hand can be the comfort and affection that they need at the moment.

If you are planning an outing, try avoiding large, noisy crowds. It may cause overstimulation as they try to process their surroundings and make sense of what is going on. Try going for a drive, getting coffee, or for a short visit to the park. Remember to stay flexible. Things that made your visit meaningful yesterday, may not work today. If your loved one is having a bad day, don’t take it personally. It isn’t your fault. They may be tired, not feeling well, or having more frustration than normal. It is perfectly alright to keep your visit short. Simple Tips:

• Talk about past memories.

Talking about what’s going on now

may add to their confusion, or

increased agitation.

• Try slowly increasing visitors.

Start with one or two at a time as

to not overwhelm them.

• Give them time to respond to

questions or comments. It may

take them longer to organize their

thoughts.

• If you’re loved one is interested in

attending activities during your

visit, try attending and

participating with them. Keep

your interactions positive and

supportive.

KSV celebrated National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 19th with an ice cream social. The staff prepared sundaes with lots of toppings, tables were put together and residents and families had a great time!

Brittany Vernon

Brittany was awarded employee of

the month for July. She has been

working for the Hearth at

Hendersonville since it opened.

She started out full time, but

dropped to casual once she

started school. She does pick up

hours during her breaks. Despite

being casual, she has great work

ethics and always does a good

job. She is very knowledgeable

with the ways our kitchen runs.
