Romare Bearden 1911-1988
born in Charlotte, NC
moved to Harlem in 1914
first drawing lessons at the
age of 15 by a neighbor
moved to East Liberty, PA
with his grandparents in 1927
he attends 3 different
colleges: Lincoln University,
Boston University and NYU
after college he publish many
different polit ical cartoons in
several publications
first solo exhibition in 1940
enlists as a private in the army
in 1942
marries Nanette Rohan in 1954
active in founding the Studio
Museum in Harlem in 1968
he is one of the founding
members of "The Black
Academy of Arts and Letters",
which began in 1970
solo exhibition at the Museum
of Modern Art, NYC in 1971
attends reception at the White
House in 1981
