Executive Summary

In January 2008, WTMD in Baltimore asked its listeners to vote for their top ten favorite albums of all time. These votes were compiled into a list of top 897 albums, which WTMD counted down throughout the month of February. Discern Consulting conducted an analysis of the list of albums, and developed a scoring system to compare albums and bands to each other. According to Discern’s analysis:

448 bands/artists had at least one album on the list. Of these, the top five rock bands/artists of all time are (in order):

1. The Beatles 2. Bob Dylan 3. Bruce Springsteen 4. U2 5. Led Zeppelin

The top rock band/artist by decade are:

• 1960s – The Beatles • 1970s – Pink Floyd • 1980s – U2 • 1990s – Dave Matthews Band • 2000s – Wilco

Bob Dylan is the only artist to release at least one ranked album in each of the past five decades. The five best years for rock music were (in order, with top ranked album):

Detailed Findings

In January 2008, WTMD (89.7 FM in Baltimore) asked its listeners to vote for their top ten favorite rock albums, and used those votes to compile a list of the top 897 albums of all time. A list of WTMD’s top albums, in order, starts on page 14. The list may not be typical of general tastes and preferences, as WTMD is a public radio station features a mix of old and new music. According to the WTMD web site (www.wtmd.org):

We focus our music on songs that tell stories, and are performed by artists who are committed to their craft and the power that music can play in our lives. It’s a mix of Folk, Blues and acoustic based Rock. We feature artists that have been our life long companions and new artists who write their own material and truly believe in their art. In addition to today’s favorites feature multiple cuts from various albums in an attempt to understand what an artist is saying with their music.

WTMD’s listeners tend to have more eclectic musical tastes than the general population. As a result, WTMD’s list of the best albums includes a mix of newer and alternative music, as well as the “usual suspects” of classic rock.

Discern Consulting analyzed the WTMD list to answer a range of questions, such as:

• Which are the greatest bands, of all‐time and by decade?

• Which years and decades were best for music?

• What were the top albums for each year?

• Which bands didn’t make the list?

The analysis follows below, and in the appendices attached to this report.

Greatest Bands of All Time. There are several different ways one could use the albums in the WTMD to determine which is the greatest band. One could simply count the total number of albums that a band has on the list, but that method does not distinguish whether albums appeared near the top or bottom of the list. It also does not break ties between bands with the same number of albums on the list. For example, Jimi Hendrix and Ani DiFranco both have five albums on the list, but Jimi’s rank higher, and that should count for something.

Another approach is to assign more weight to albums that appear nearer the top of the list, and this is the method we used. Discern developed a scoring methodology in which the top ranked album receives 100 points, the 897th album receives five, and all albums in between receive intermediate scores. (For details on the scoring process, please refer to Appendix 6 on page 59.) By adding up the total points scored by a band or artist, we can arrive at some measure of greatness that can be compared to other bands.


Using this scoring system, the top twenty bands/artists of all time are as follows. (Refer to Appendix 3 on page 41 for a full list of bands ranked by score.)

The 1970s produced the most listed albums and highest overall score, while albums from the 1960s had the highest average score. (That is, albums from the 1960s were generally ranked higher on WTMD’s list.) The bottom row in the chart below projects the 2000s to a full 10 years

Commentary

• One challenge in this analysis: how to define a band? o Is “Neil Young” the same or different than “Neil Young and Crazy Horse”? For this

analysis, we awarded points to the main creative force in the band. So Neil Young gets points for all his work, with or without Crazy Horse. Likewise, we gave points to Frank Zappa, and not the Mothers of Invention. Obviously, this can be a fuzzy area, and we used our best judgment where we were uncertain.

o Eric Clapton is an especially difficult case. In the end, we just kept John Mayall, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos, and his solo work all separate. If we had combined all of Clapton’s various incarnations, he would have scored 313.8 total points, enough to place him twelfth on the all‐time list, just ahead of Van Morrison.

• Clearly, voters on the WTMD list love older music. o The average rank is highest for albums from the 1960s and drops with each subsequent

decade. This probably has as much to do with reverence for the past as with any real superiority, though the voting makes clear that the late ‘60s and early ‘70s were a special time for music.

o Still, some well‐regarded older acts received little support. Creedence Clearwater Revival ranks 260th in overall score, Aretha Franklin ranks 347th, and Jeff Beck ranks 380th.

• One outcome of the WTMD voting method – asking each voter to name their 10 favorite albums – is that votes will be split for bands with multiple contending albums. For example, the Allman Brothers’ Brothers and Sisters appears at #717 on the list. Most music fans would agree that the album is superior to many that are ranked higher – Cracked Rear View by Hootie and the Blowfish, at #691, is one of many candidates – but most Allmans fans listed Eat a Peach or Fillmore East, so Brothers and Sisters got relatively few votes. Another possible example is Led Zeppelin’s In Through the Out Door, which doesn’t even appear on TMD’s list. That’s a pretty good album, but it doesn’t measure up to the band’s earlier work, so it received few votes (even from Zeppelin fans).

• One thing that stands out is how productive bands were in rock’s earlier days. The Beatles have nine listed albums for the six years from 1964 through 1969, taking top honors for that decade. Wilco is the top scoring band for the 2000s, even though they have only released three (very good) albums. Looking at the lists for the 1960s and 1970s, one routinely see bands showing up with a new album every year, sometimes more than one. That is rare or non‐existent in the 1990s and 2000s.

Appendix 6. Scoring Process

We developed a system to assign points to each of the albums on the WTMD list. The scoring system assigns more weight to those albums near to the top of the list. We assigned a score of 100 points for the top album on the list and 5 points for the 897th (so that the top album gets 20 times the weight of the last album). We then developed an equation to assign points to all the albums in between:

As the graph below illustrates, the effect of this equation is to accelerate the points awarded as albums rank higher on the list. The difference in points between the 850th and the 750th albums is very small – about four tenths of a point. But there is almost a 30 point difference between the 100th and 1st albums on the list. This “winners take all” curve should roughly mimic the voting by WTMD listeners. Most likely, albums near the top of the list appeared on many ballots, while those near the bottom of the list appeared on relatively few.
